Very disappointed in Oxbow's. We live in the area so wanted to give it a try. It was our anniversary so we decided to go here as a treat. We ordered a dozen of oysters as an appetizer which were decent but we only received 11. They did bring 1 more out but how do you miscount 12 oysters? For dinner my wife ordered the pork chop based on the servers recommendation. I ordered the planked halibut. The pork chop came with polenta or grtis, figs, and then broccolini. We didn't really care for it as the seasoning had a strong sage or thyme flavor. The halibut was okay, even though it said planked it came out in a bowl with fingerling potatoes and carrots. Both were underwhelming for the price. A $15 bottle of wine in the store was $48. When we received our $187 check I noticed that there was a 4% service fee added to the tab. I asked what that was for and the server mentioned that it was to help pay their medical insurance. To me this is just wrong, either increase your already high prices to hide the service fee or suck it up. I will not frequent places that charge a service fee. Out the door with a tip we were at $210. Not worth it at all and will not be going back. I think once the new vibe is over this place will be in trouble. Tried for the first time on a recommendation from friends. From the outside, the restaurant looks like a medical office building. The dining room is very small and very loud. The menu is small, pricy and didn't include a hamburger option. Couldn't imagine paying $35 for a pork chop. I had fish and chips, which was nothing exciting. It was halibut but I could tell that the pieces were pre breaded, then frozen. A friend had the clam chowder, at $16 for a bowl I would've expected a dish that didn't look like it came out of a can. I was excited to try this new place in our town!! great looking menu. unfortunately the food was a disappointment. For $58 our NY "Waygu" steak was over cooked, lacked flavor and mostly tastes like liquid smoke. Brussel sprouts and oysters were bomb. Old fashion was delicious but expensive. We saw 3 beavers on the river! Overall, I'd skip this place for dinner (unless you are a beaver enthusiast). Last but not least, this place has a problem with pepper? My wife ordered her steak medium but came done (no pink) the server was understanding and offered free desert (recommendation from the manager) but we asked to have a new steak made instead. My Ravioli was fine. The added Jumbo shrimp were small (15-20ct) and the sauce thin and bland. We met friends from out of state, made reservations for dinner, and sat inside. Service was extremely slow. The only good thing to that was it gave us a lot of extra time for conversation. Food is overpriced for what you get. I got the cedar planked halibut. It came out in a bowl and not on a plank. I thought that was quite interesting. It lacked flavor and presentation. We asked to share the clam chowder soup and was told it wasn't really a shareable bowl of soup. Even though it's under the shareable appetizers. So we tried the Brussels sprouts. The service is great 4.5, ambiance is 5, now the which is very important to review, we ordered the chicken wings, I do not recommend this, it's too dry, the breading is too thick, the chicken is not fresh out of the fryer, it's not warm enough as if is been seating out for a while and not much flavor in it. The chicken itself is too bland, the seasoning is on the breading. The green salad is 3.5 nothing to bragged but it's ok. Fish and chips is a 4 fresh out of the fryer, it's all about the sauce. we have been here 3 times total now. first time was for brunch just the hubby and I. we sat in the bar. Food and service were exquisite. Service so much so that the hubby left a very hefty tip. We were so impressed we brought our family back for a dinner. There was 6 of us. We were seated upstairs and service was definitely lacking. We received our food before we even got our cocktails!! They didn't charge us for the cocktails to compensate which was nice but made for a not great experience. Food was delish as usual though. Yesterday for Mother's Day brunch we were again sadly seated upstairs, 5 of us, and service wasn't great again And my son ordered two dishes and only received one of them. My recommendation would be to add an additional bar upstairs at least for weekends and holidays when the upstairs area is utilized. Food is always wonderful and we like the ambience. Reading other reviews now, it appears this rude behavior is throughout the whole culture of the restaurant, so providing examples would go on deaf ears. Holy smokes. What an absolutely amazing experience. Starting with making the reservation. The fact that they have an allergy selection option on the reservation is AMAZING for those of us with dietary restrictions. It lets your server and the chef know ahead of time. We shared the Brussels for appetizer. So good. ADD THE BACON. It's worth it. I got the lamb, and my husband got the halibut. Every single thing was incredible, and prepared to perfection. Our server, Gabby was fantastic. The cucumber limeade cocktail was delicious and refreshing. Sumner needed a place like this. We will absolutely be coming here regularly. I've been eyeing this restaurant since they started building. I was very eager to try it out and was not disappointed. We reserved through their website (which I hear is the best way as Google does not work). Parking was easily available and accessible. The inside dining area and bar were beautiful. Patio has a great view of Mt Rainer (I can see why they picked this spot). The drinks we got were delicious. I did prefer my husbands Kentucky Penicillin to my Pomegranate Cosmo though. The smoke was a great touch and really lingered giving a good drinking experience for the KP. For our appetizer we got the wings. They were cooked great, juicy, and fell off the bone. The flavor was spectacular and the sauce was delicious. Also the chief , Alex, even took the time to deliver some dishes to each table. Our entrees (Shrimp and Grits and the Steak) were cooked well and tasted great. My husband thought his steak ended up being more medium than MR though it was still very juicy and tender. He also added bacon and mushrooms. The bacon had a nice thick cut. The grits they used were different from what I've ever had, could be due to being fresh ground..? The sauce was a tomato based and paired well with the overall dish. I thought the creme brûlée was okay, not too sweet. The staff were all very polite and checked in often. Service was horrible, tried to go there for dinner. several empty tables but we were told we could either sit in the doorway (getting a blast of cold air every time the door opened or we could sit at a very tiny table in a dark corner. we asked if we could sit at one of the other available tables and we were told no. Went here on Father Day for our first visit. Was surprised it wasn't busy at all during our 2 hrs but realized it's normally only open for dinner. For the holiday they opened at noon, but doubt few people knew, we lucked out by calling. The location is great, very visible, new contemporary building along the river side with 2 floors ( elevator) and a nice patio w/ heater's overlooking river. Parking is easy in a new ample size lot next door. Seating is mostly tables/chairs, we got one of the u-shaped booths which we preferred. There is a bar in center that I believe is considered lounge seating ( 21yrs.) with limited seating. This day had several great sounding special entrees offered. The menu being just dinner currently is limited but decent selection. Entrees start at $22 and go up from there. Their signature cocktails are $15, pricey but perfectly executed and delicious. I think the Blended Sour was our fav! We were excited to see raw oysters on the menu, reluctant to pay $38 doz. but it was a special meal so we splurged w/ food & drinks and they were delicious! We were shocked though that they had NO bread/rolls, crackers of any kind offered at the restaurant yet!! I can't imagine that this hasn't been constantly requested at a nice dining spot. We were informed though that it IS in the works, hopefully soon. People want a good bread option w/ soups/chowders/entrees and even the oysters! We also shared the Ala Thomas salad, they were nice in splitting the plates for us. Nice amount of fresh shrimp but sadly we couldn't detect the dressing. We kept mixing and added salt but just no flavor, needed acid and salt elements badly. We finally decided to toss the mignonette from oysters over the salad and it worked fine. Hubby ordered the bbq ribs full rack special, I believe $36, and requested fries (up-charge $4) instead of baked beans. They came out looking awesome and smelled like hog heaven. The ribs moist and flavorful w/the unique homemade fig bbq sauce. The slaw too needed dressing (ugh) but fries tasty. I ordered halibut & chips, looked and tasted great. Nice portion ( 3-pc. $26) w/ good tzatziki tarter. I personally prefer a beer batter coating (showcasing one of your house draft beers) but I'd still order again. Must add that our female server (apologize for forgetting her name) was very nice & attentive but then disappeared after our meals came. The bartender ( Travis) came and checked on us few times then we realized he was taking over while she took her lunch. He apologized later saying he thought we knew that. Oddly it was his name as our server on the receipt. He too was very engaging, helpful and professional besides making incredible drinks. All in all we had a very delightful dining experience and so thrilled it's nearby in darling Sumner area. Chef doing great job! Hoping they'll soon open for lunch too, at least Fri-Sun. Having a Happy Hour would be awesome as well but realize can't expand too quickly. We will be back soon! read more

My family and I had a really disappointing experience over the weekend. We had made a reservation a week or so prior via Google. When the four of us arrived, the hostess said they could not find our reservation in their system, so she had the general manager come speak to us. He told us that this was an issue they've been having with Google where the reservations are made but not sending to their system. We asked if there was any possibility to still dine that evening, and he said no. My boyfriend then expressed how it was disappointing that this happened as we were looking forward to dining here, and the manager said for us to take it up with Google. Then, the manager told my boyfriend he had to leave the establishment. He called the owner of Oxbow Sumner after we left. The owner took no accountability and said that the general manager told him that my boyfriend was being loud and disruptive - and that's why he was asked to leave. For a white man to say this to someone black is clearly offensive and a racial microaggression. Mind you, the ambiance of the restaurant itself is loud. So yes, it requires speaking at a higher volume to be heard, but in no way was he being disrespectful to the manager. As someone who works in management and hospitality, it is common knowledge to treat guests with respect and try to resolve situations like these (even if you are firm that it's not your fault). Reading other reviews, it appears that this is not the first time the manager has treated guests poorly. It would have been great if they: put us on a wait list, offered to make a reservation for a future date, issued a small gift card, told us a better way to reserve in the future - or, simply apologized for the inconvenience. Unfortunately this did not happen and the experience of just trying to get seated has deterred us and others from wanting to dine here in the future. read more

I'll start by saying that we will be back! Living in Auburn, we usually drive to Seattle or Tacoma to eat. It was great taking a short drive to Sumner. I was on the fence with whether to give 4 or 5 stars. The Porcini Ravioli was an easy 5 star item. The pasta was tender, the filling tasty, the sauce was delicious and rich (can't wait until they start serving the rolls they are workin on) and the large sized grated cheese added just the right amount of bite. The Winter Pear Salad was good. Lots of pomegranates and plenty of Beecher's cheese. It was very fresh tasting, though it could have been dressed a bit heavier. The Tagliatelle with pork cheek was also very good. A little sweet for my taste, but I see where they were going. However, the pasta itself was a bit thick and doughy in places. The chef mentioned he is working with his staff on making pasta. At this point I was leaning toward 4 stars. Then the Mango Tart came out. This was an excellent dessert. So... I was leaning toward 5 stars again. When I got home and saw that we were charged $4 to split our salad and 4% service charge. We had mentioned we were sharing and thought it was nice of the waitress to split if for us. She should have asked if we wanted it split for a charge. She should have also mentioned that they add 4% to the bill for the kitchen staff and health insurance. Raising the price on the items would be more transparent. This is a pet peeve of mine. Add 4% to the price of the meal and pay your staff enough that the customer doesn't need to give them an obligatory tip. So... I settled on 4 stars. We will be back and I will reevaluate. read more

I'm a big fan of spaces inside a restaurant that can actually make a sectional roll up door work to such a point that I suspect many people may not notice. As others said this is a nice change and option for the area. Oxbow and Farm 12 are clearly raising the bar for regional options and above average food. Their parking lot is a very nice size and plenty of access across the street at the Old Cannery whose owner also owned the Ox Bow. Our server, Charity, was very good and attentive to our needs. I loved the extra stout utensils that have a good weight to them but they also appear "tarnished". Just caught our attention but still like the feel of them and the added bonus of real cloth napkins. They have 2 unisex restrooms side by side so don't be surprised if you have to take that awkward stance in an already tight hallway. Also a big fan of "display kitchens" where patrons can watch the action behind the line. I didn't take many shots as I try to avoid capturing faces and it was pretty full while we were there. read more

Food was not that great and way overpriced. The $4 service fee tacked onto the bill was not a fun surprise either (like what for? We were only a party of two). The $60 total (pre tip) for a two person lunch and one drink was definitely not worth it. The fish and chips didn't come with anything else (not even a small side of cole slaw) and the Asian salad was on a bed of mostly thick white chunks of cabbage. We've honestly had better frozen chicken and fish. Also pretty loud inside and feels like a bit of an echo chamber. Seriously? Why? Doesn't make sense to me, he should be in the kitchen! Perhaps if he was, overseeing and tasting dishes before they came out, maybe things would have been different. However this guy doesn't know what he's doing. I ordered the Clam chowder. Living in Washington for 25 years, I've had many chowders, this tasted disgusting! It was terrible. We ordered the carne asada, The meat was overcooked.. carne asada should be served medium rare and ours was well done. On the plate was two green onions... With the roots attached... charred ... Definitely a garnish... not sure what to do with those, and the 1 slice of watermelon radish, as beautiful as it is... didn't have any purpose on the plate. The blue corn" homemade tortillas" were tough and unedible... They were tough and were not foldable and soft and pliable in order to make a taco....Do not recommend this restaurant! The only saving grace was that the executive chef came out listen to what I had to say and compted our dinner. He was offended ... And seemed pretty humble, however he didn't get what I was saying.... My husband and I have dined here in the past and loved it when it had first opened up. It was a new hip place in Sumner and we love supporting all our local businesses. Great location with plenty of parking available. On our most recent visit last week, we shared the brussel sprouts for an appetizer, I highly recommend you add the bacon to them. They're delicious! He had the greens salad prior to his steak entree. I wanted the taco board with the blackened cod but they were out of the cod that evening. I went with the carne asada taco board. It was good but it left much to be desired with the presentation and toppings. The carne asada was good (albeit it was not cut evenly, some pieces were thinner and others were pretty chunky) it came with grilled/sautéed onions, it just felt heavier than I would have expected. The toppings included pickled red onions and red cabbage, I wish it had a sauce of sorts. In other review pictures it appears a sauce was included so maybe I just didn't get any with my dish (I didn't know this at the time of dining). Not bad, just would have expected a bit more for the price point. My husband thought his steak was good, but didn't rave about it. For dessert we shared the miso caramel sundae which tasted amazing. My only comment on that would be that it's hard to eat when it's served in a wine glass, specially if you're sharing the dessert. The caramel sauce was incredible though, I'm obsessed! The service was great, everyone was very friendly. I will add that if you bring a baby, there is a lovely changing table in the restroom which is good to note. I met some long time friends for a gathering including some beverages, appetizers, and dinner. The deck is nice with heaters but yellowjackets are now looming. Service was great with lots of drink options to meet everyones desires. The appetisers included fried brussel sprouts with pork belly bacon and were a hit all around as were the Tai chicken wings. For the !main course I had the seafood sampler. Very disappointed! The oysters were fried properly but the oysters were the worst I have had. I should have sent it back... but I didn't. Should never have been served from the kitchen. The fried prawns were ok but the halibut was fried and too cooked. The steak frys were marginal. We absolutely adored our 1st visit to this restaurant. It is an inviting change from the usual fare in the area. The service is excellent, and the food is scrumptious. My husband and I devoured our ravioli dish and the pork chop plate. The ambience is inviting with a light-filled space with big open windows, comfortable seating, and a modern cozy vibe. We enjoyed dinner at this newer Sumner Restaurant. Bees are a bit of an issue on the deck right now. I would recommend inside seating if you plan to order any fish or meat. The staff was very attentive and accommodating. Prices are high, but the food was superb and well worth the prices.We had the mushroom ravioli and the oven baked chicken. Both were delicious. I've only been to this place twice. I'd heard good things about it, so the first time we visited was during a double date night with some friends. Our party of four was seated upstairs. The atmosphere is relaxing and very open (I really like that). We had a nice table by the window and a view overlooking the river. Our server was super sweet...just the cheeriest disposition. I honestly forgot her name (forehead smack), but everyone in our group loved her (tall, blonde gal). The thing I didn't love about this place was that my entire meal came out super cold (steak and I can't remember the side I had...maybe mashed potatoes). It was also overcooked (well done instead of medium rare). So it obviously sat for a while before being brought out. Not sure if that was on the kitchen or the server. We did mention it to our waitress, and although she happily offered to take my plate and have a new steak made for me I didn't send it back. I'm always afraid someone will spit in my food. She even said I could order something completely different. Also, the berry crumble dessert wasn't good at all. Just mushy berries under a tiny sprinkle of crumble. That also came out cold...like it had just been pulled out of the fridge. The manager apologized and said that wasn't how it was to be presented so had a new one made. Even though it was hot, it was just as awful...only a little bit more crumble on top. There really was no substance to the dessert :( On the bright side...the brussel sprouts were scrumptious, the pork belly bao sandwiches were top notch, and our friend really enjoyed his sea bass. I planned to order it the next time, but I guess it was only a seasonal item. The 2nd time we visited Oxbow was during our anniversary. We made last minute reservations. It was on a Monday night, so their availability was pretty open. My husband and I ordered small salads, and he really liked the Caesar, but my house salad came out with tomatoes that had black moldy ends, and some of the lettuce had red veins (not from the dressing). I picked through and ate what I could. For dinner, I ordered the pork end caps with chimichurri & cauliflower risotto. The pork end caps were perfectly tender and seared, the chimichurri was a little too vinegary but still good, and the cauliflower risotto was just mashed cauliflower with no seasoning/flavor whatsoever. Definitely not what you expect a risotto to be. That made me sad because when I see risotto on a menu it's the one thing that I gravitate toward. I wanted dessert before heading home, and our waitress (also just as sweet, helpful and bubbly as the server we had the first time around) recommended the baklava w/ ice cream and mentioned that it was a new, seasonal item. Honestly, it was the BEST baklava I've ever had! It was so decadent and sweet. It also contained the right amount of nuts. It was perfectly crispy and chewy at the same time. My husband finished almost 3/4 of it before I could even take a 2nd bite. Lol! Just writing about it is making my mouth water. I even suggested to our waitress that they take the berry crumble off the menu and replace it with their delicious baklava. So even though we haven't had the BEST experience during either of our visits, I would still go back. The food can't always be perfect, and you're bound to encounter some hiccups, but the customer service and ambiance really make up for anything that's lacking at this establishment.
