We have ordered Ozeki Noodle's signature donburi for dinner via delivery several times and were pleased with the quality and taste of the food at a reasonable price. We decided to visit the restaurant in person and try their lunch bento. I ordered the kalbi ribs and my wife ordered the tonkatsu. Ample portions, and nicely presented. The restaurant's interior was neat and clean. What I am reviewing more than anything else is the service. My wife is from Japan and we were conversing in Japanese while we were eating. Perhaps this was offensive to the Korean owner, but we noticed that she and the waitress were very attentive to the table right next to us, asking them how their meal was, etc. On the other hand, they did not come by once during our meal to ask how are meal was. While we enjoyed the food at Ozeki Noodle, I feel that the poor (and one might even say discriminatory) service made it a rather unpleasant experience. read more

This place is alright. The food didn't wow me at all. I got the Nabe Yaki noodle and my bf got the special combo with beef bowl. As you can see in the pic, the beef bowl is sooo small. I was expecting a lot more with how much we paid for it. The beef bowl itself was alright and comparable to Yoshinoya. It's a little bit on the sweeter side. The udon that was included had chewy noodles which I liked but it just tasted like udon that I can get anywhere. On the other hand, the udon that I got was a little bit too salty for my taste. It had more of a soy sauce flavor to it. What I liked about it was the noodles and how hot the soup was. Mind you, the soup is boiling hot when it is given to you so be careful cause it was hard for me to eat until 10 min later. I also enjoyed the tempura but other than that, the toppings were all meh. The mushroom was sooooo sweet and just did not fit in with the dish. The nice thing about this place is the staff was super friendly and helpful. Horrible customer service. I originally ordered my food for takeout but I decided to change my mind and eat there due to lack of time on my lunch. As I got my order as soon as I sat down a lady approached me and said I could not eat there because I ordered takeout. I asked so even if I paid for my lunch from here, I cannot eat here? The lady responded and said no you said takeout, we put the food in containers, you cannot eat here. I spent about $65. I was so taken aback. I would understand if the place was full and I was going to take a customers spot, but the place was EMPTY. Apart from being rude, and rolling her eyes at me, I was shocked. Came for lunch and the crowds are about the same. A few dine-ins with several walking in and out to pick up orders. I think their to-go service is making a huge impact, because the first thing they ask is if you are to-go or dine-in. Minus the snafu from last time, I would say they are still pretty consistent overall. Came again and had their special combination for cold soba and beef donburi. The cold soba this time around was a bit less than stellar - didn't have the same bite to it than the last time I've had it. Perhaps it is true they make their soba daily and this batch was just less than stellar. However, I still cannot tell and am not knowledgeable about it. Came out in a similar large bowl with the dipping sauce and side condiments. The beef bowl has been the most consistent, but this time around, I did notice they did not have the pickled ginger on top. Not sure if it was forgotten this time around, but bummer that it wasn't there. Still good as a whole, but just a feeling of something missing. My girlfriend had the tanuki udon and the chicken bowl. Again, I do not prefer the chicken bowl, because it's basically a tenderized chicken breast (pounded) and then saturated in a thick teriyaki sauce. She didn't prefer it either and likes the beef bowl that I had as well. The udon wasn't bad, but I believe the udon isn't fresh, but a packaged kind. Can't tell for sure, but it didn't taste like it was fresh udon. The tanuki in the udon was nice like last time and offers a good texture to the soup. All in all, some hit or miss, but still good for the food based on what you pay for. If you can finish it, I do recommend the special combination for cold soba and beef donburi. read more

Great little spot for a quick lunch or dinner! We wanted something casual and easy last night for dinner. I found Ozeki on Yelp with decent ratings. We ordered the gyoza appetizer (fried all over, I prefer the pan seared on one side but these were good), spicy pork don (included sautéed mushrooms and spicy sliced jalapeños) and BBQ beef don (included sautéed mushrooms and onions). The pork and beef dons comes in a rice bowl. The portions were large (we took home leftovers!) and the flavors were delish!! They served us miso soups with them as well. The place seemed popular for locals and it's a moderately simple looking restaurant with no frills, clean space, friendly service and great food. I was traveling in the area and was swayed by the beef bowl. I'm a huge Yoshinoya fan (stationed in Japan for four years) and was hoping it would be close--it was better than close. Their gyudon was amazing and spot on! Served with kizami shoga and perfect rice...felt like I was back in Atsugi. I also tried their beef udon and was very surprised how good it was--best I've found since being back in the States, over twenty years now. Wife had the yakisoba and it looked and smelled amazing. Large portions! You get your money's worth. Turned another fellow Japan-traveler on to it, and he loved the yakisoba as well. Paid with debit card. Von's sushi is way better! We went to Ozeki for lunch, ordered house salads, spicy tuna sushi, gyoza appetizer, and chicken yaki soba. The house salad was nothing spectacular: wilted lettuce and a small sliced tomato, sushi was mostly rice -- more like old rice rolls, gyoza was burnt and super salty, and the chicken yaki soba was also salty--- it's supposed to include vegetables, instead they made it with lettuce. The waitress never checked on us. I was super hungry, that's the only reason I ate it. If I can't make it to a high end sushi restaurant like Anaba, I will get my sushi fix from the VONS deli, it's actually good. They have a sushi chef preparing it: quality sushi and not loaded with rice. Ozeki Noodle is THE spot for udon in Oxnard. The restaurant is located at the Esplanade and is really inexpensive for lunch or dinner. I had the tempura udon along with the California roll and it filled me up more than I expected before heading to the gym lol. The tempura was nicely battered and the udon soup was broiling. The udon noodles are thick and plenty (insert euphemism here lol). The California roll was at a delicious temperature where it was not freezing cold and the rice tasted fresh. The service was excellent and the restaurant has a cozy and clean atmosphere. I feel like this place has a lot of regulars and it's pleasant to see that. I miss Japanese food and there were many choices so couldn't pick up one quickly but I ended up ordering Katsu Don (breaded pork cutlet with egg $9.50). It was not much as Japanese authentic Katsu Don. The pork cutlet was a little bit too well-done and personally I like sweeter taste. One of my friends ordered Chirashi Bowl (assorted chopped sashimi on the sushi rice $12.95). When she ordered, the waitress told her that the picture of Chirashi Bowl on the menu was very different from the real thing and that was true. it was more like salad bowl. My friend said it was good but it was different from what we Japanese think as Chiarashi Bowl.( I recommend the owner to change the picture ) I heard that previous owner was Japanese but current owner is Korean. Although they take on the recipe of Japanese owner, I felt somehow Korean arrange. I stopped here for lunch. It's clean, they're very nice, and the service is very good. I got the Teriyaki Chicken Bento and the Chicken was somewhat dry although drenched with sauce. The salad was iceberg lettuce with some kind of sauce all over it, and garnished with a large slice of cold tomato and a single stalk of broccoli. First of all: iceberg lettuce? Really? That stuff barely has any nutrition. And the cold tomato? Refrigerating tomatoes removes all flavor. A single stalk of broccoli? And those lame fake-crab-meat blocks... not even rolled. Two dumplings that tasted good but weren't cooked well. So... I will therefore be sure to NOT get the bento box (only got it because the server suggested) when I come back to try the noodles (since it's a really noodle house and has good ratings); if they're good, I'll update my rating to higher stars. read more

Although this place was PACKED when I arrived today and more people came in after me, I'm not impressed with this place at all. Ordered the shrimp tempura roll and it had zero flavor. There's old food piled in trays right outside restrooms. Not a pretty site to see right before I eat. Older lady employee didn't even say BOO to me when I asked her for a side of spicy mayo. However may be a language barrier in hindsight. I won't be back as I have tons of other sushi places to try in VC. read more

What a pleasant little surprise to find this place hiding in the Esplanade Shopping Center. I first walked in afraid that it would be another restaurant that just slaps tooth-achingly sweet teriyaki sauce on everything and calls it Japanese food. Definitely not the case here! This place is a hidden gem serving up a combo of casual street-food or homestyle Japanese cooking! Therefore, this means that one shouldn't walk in here expecting Sugarfish or KazuNori. I did however see some nice roll options on the menu. I really enjoyed their yakisoba! It's a pan-fried noodle dish with vegetables and your choice of meat. The flavor was on point! It even had a sprinkling of aonori, and a little side of pickled ginger which was the perfect little tart gingery bite to complement the dish. The noodles were cooked perfectly, tender and chewy with a bit of smokiness. The serving was quite large as well. When it came out, it had a bit of an effect on people sitting nearby. They gaped at my food, sniffing appreciatively from a distance, until one of them leaned over and asked me what I ordered so they can order it too. I also tried one of the udon noodle dishes with an accompanying beef bowl that my husband ordered, and it was so good. There was a little mix-up with the order so they allowed my husband to replace his beef bowl with the pork katsu rice bowl and gave him a full-size katsu bowl! They were so pleasant and professional about it all that we weren't bothered by the mix-up at all, but they even comped his meal. My gosh, that was sweet and thoughtful of them, not to mention going above and beyond our expectations. Can't wait to try more of what they've got to offer when we're back in town! read more
