I've been dining at Pac Catch for YEARS. Always a good call- they're trained to know allergens and be accommodating if you have any dietary restrictions. Love it. Have done quite a few diets and never had an issue eating here (dairy free, vegan, low carb... etc). You can get their spicy pacific drink on the rocks.. highly recommend it that way. Margaritas are a staple- they actually use real lime juice! I'll usually stick with the original poke or the spicy poke. My rating is actually a 3.5 but I'll be generous and round up. This place seems to be one of the view restaurants in the area that is open on Mondays and past 9pm. When we arrived we were seated immediately, the restaurant is big and the decor is simple but sleek and there's a nice fireplace near the back. Our server was good and very attentive, checking on us mutiple times during the evening. I was meeting with a friend here after and so we lingered for a while chatting after we were done eating and we never felt pressured to leave. Now on to the food! We ordered the guacamole and chips, and coconut shrimp appetizers, the coconut shrimp was very tasty, the gaucamole was simple, straight up avocado with some seasonings served with some nice sturdy tortilla chips. It was satisfying in the way any decent guac is, although not particularly special. For our mains I had the trio sampler, where you get to pick three different ceviches (I picked the hawaiian ahi, yuzu yellowtail and mexican style mixed seafood) and my friend had the korean steak bibimbap. My friend enjoyed her steak especially complimenting the sauce. I stole a couple of the brussel sprouts that came on the side and they were delicious. My ceviches were good but not great. The ahi one lacked flavor, perhaps because it didnt have enough sauce or wasn't marinated long enough. the other too, had better flavor but the cutting of the ingredients was very inconsistent, big chunks of things made it hard to scoop up a bit of everything to get that perfect bite. So that was kinda disappointing. I liked the wontons, chips and the crudite it was served with, gave you a few options to mix and match. All the portions were generous and we had enough leftovers to take home. All in all it was a good meal. Fish is fresh, portions are big, and service is great. I'm always hesitant about poke because I'm skeptical how fresh their fish is, especially since they can hide any fishiness under the marinade. But I've never had a problem here even when I've come on Tues, Thurs, or Friday. Came in here for happy hour to grab dinner with my sister. It wasn't that crowded which was nice and the whole menu for happy hour looked delicious. My sister and I ended up grabbing two sushi dishes: spicy tuna and the firecracker salmon. It came out like a full roll which was cool. We also ordered the poke. To be specific we ordered the salmon California poke and the ahi tuna poke. Both were good; however the chips that came with it over powered the poke that we both ate the poke and left the chips aside. The service here was okay where they took our order quick, but the food came out slow. The downfall of this place was that we had to ask 5 times to 3 different people for another glass of water. We finally got the water...when we got the check. A little too late! I've always loved this place when it comes to the specials I haven't recently been to the actual San Mateo location in a long time. Love the staff the bartender Angel is amazing he is busy taking care of the bar and making drinks and he always remembers my order and the manager James has always been welcoming! I realized less than 15 seconds after placing an order that I ordered the wrong item for my guest. I immediately tried to change it and even though the Doordash menu has an option for making changes, Pacific Catch doesn't allow it. So I tried to cancel the order since it hadn't yet been prepared and they would only refund me the tip! I tried to call but only get automated responses. Doordash customer service was great, they called for me, but the restaurant said they wouldn't change my order. Given how often I've ordered from them before, I find this appalling. I has a dinner on Friday night with my friend. All food we ordered was great and we enjoyed chatting in there. There is one thing that I didn't like was our server lady who never catch our words once (it could be possible that our English was not good enough). She replied "what?" every time we ordered something even "takeout box please". At the end she pushed us to make a payment because she had to leave soon. So I put four star unfortunately. Not bad! Walked by here countless times in downtown San Mateo--finally had a chance to visit! The inside is pretty well decorated, as you can see from the large windows in the front of the store. The wait staff are pretty friendly--generally tries to put in the effort to chit chat with each table and try to start conversations on stuff not related to food etc. :) The food is also pretty good. Got the basket-mix-and-match, which was fries coconut shrimp, fried fish, and fried oyster. Came with coleslaw and spicy fries as sides--the sides were ok. The fried fish pieces were pretty big. The fried oyster in particular was REALLY good--crispy on the outside, but juicy and warm on the inside. It even came with sweet sauce and tartar sauce--both was excellent. Nice! WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE! I made reservation for 5 people at 11:30am. I got there early so the lady in the front said we can choose any table we want. We sat at the back but few minutes later the Sun is so bright and getting hotter so we moved tables. Our server EDDIE is so rude and told us we cannot change tables. He said those tables have been reserved but NO table numbers listed on each table. He is also very impatient with us taking our orders. The chairs are very uncomfortable and the food is not so good either! I only like the fried calamari. The rest of the food we ordered are just okay. If I had known there is Bonchon right across the street I would have made reservation there. read more

Pacific Catch has an amazing Happy Hour deal! Most rolls are 50% off. Sadly, there's nothing on the happy hour menu that's vegan or vegetarian but hopefully that can change soon. I ordered the Hawaiian teriyaki bowl and subbed the chicken for tofu. My group ordered tuna and salmon burgers, some rolls off the happy hour menu, and the Thai coconut shrimp. The mai tais are amazing and there's a lovely little indoor patio area with a fireplace to sit by. Parking is decent--it's in downtown San Mateo so depending on the time, you might find parking. I reviewed this place a couple of years ago, not long after it opened, but accidentally placed it under the Pacific Catch in Campbell. I said then I didn't know if I'd be back, and now, after my second visit, I know there will not be a third time there. I like the interior design, and the prices aren't bad, but for me it's mostly about the food, and this didn't hold up. I got a daily special, crab melt sandwich, which came with slaw and fries. They let me substitute a salad for the fries. The sandwich was grilled, but came out kind of doughy and soggy. The "crab salad" had absolutely no crab flavor and there wasn't much of it. There was lots of cheddar which overpowered what whiff of seafood might have been there. The salad was pretty, and I liked the components, but the way they arranged it in the bowl (which by the way looked like it had been made at least several hours earlier) made it nearly impossible to eat. The best thing on the plate was the slaw, but they still give you only about 2 tablespoons of it still. The most amusing part of the meal was when I requested salt and pepper, the waiter went back to the station and he had to portion some out in a dish for me. He gave me literally about an eighth of a teaspoon of salt and so little pepper, I couldn't even see it at first! He was well meaning and much nicer than the server I had last time, but seemed very harried. read more

He had not been to Pacific Catch ever which I have because I worked at the Walnut Creek location. The service was amazing Mimi is an extraordinary server she goes above and beyond to make us satisfied with what she recommended us. She is always attentive with our table and always smiling even though she got a mask but I could tell. I'm definitely coming back and asking for her section now. On my first visit we tried calamari and ahi poke - YUM!! For dinner we had a salmon salad, skirt steak Hawaiian Teriyaki - I didn't even know they served steak, I have always been a seafood person here, the steak was juicy and well flavored, and Alaskan cod fish and chips - very good, love the jalapeno tarter sauce! Second visit ordered the Tokyo Salmon (salmon fish and chips, sord of a secret menu thing) - EXCELLENT as always; it is my favorite dish here!!! Oh and the Lomi lomi was the best I have ever had. Desserts, they serve double rainbow vanilla ice cream - to die for and you have to try their fried Dulce de Leche "Spring Rolls" - superb! Our waiter Michael and the manager Mark provided excellent customer service. They were friendly and checked on us regularly. Prices are well worth every last bite! Service was great! Sort of a chain / formula restaurant, but brought a group in and had a really excellent dinner here the other night. Was totally hopping, so glad we had an open table reservation. Had the traditional ceviche which was excellent with crispy chips. Also had the Mexican corn which wasn't too soupy. Good portion and really great flavor. Also had the ribs which were decent if not sensational. Very sweet. Kids had the steak sandwich which went down really well and also the fish and chips which were credible. Overall a great spot that surprised us with their quality. Would have loved a little bit more attentive service - I think they quadruple seated the waitress and so it was a bit of a challenge getting attention. A great place go to in downtown San Mateo. Always busy so do note that you usually have to wait at least ten minutes to be seated. (Sadly they do not offer a Yelp waiting list). The staff is really nice here, checks in often and offers assistance with ordering. The food here is great! I really enjoy the poke appetizers and recommend their tacos.
