This place sells reheated pastries from Cafe de Casa. I saw the guy take a coxinha out of the case and just plop it in the microwave. It was OK, but I knew the pastry seemed familiar... I later confirmed that they do in fact get there pastries from Cafe de Casa. Reselling these pastries is fine, especially since they're in a different neighborhood, but don't be so lazy about reviving them! Reheat them in an oven! I also ordered an acai bowl. Just in case I had any illusions about where any of the ingredients came from, I saw the guy dump a bunch of granola from some giant Costco bag of granola into a bowl. I saw him slash open a couple of frozen bags of acai berries and dump them into a blender. Combine these into a bowl, et voilà! Zero effort. The place is kind of hidden and easily missed since its located on Geary blvd right before the tunnel heading towards downtown. If you see the bank of america on Geary it is located right across the street from it. I come here only to get one thing: COXINHA which is basically Brazilian potato ball filled with chicken and cream cheese inside. It is so delicious! Its great to eat right away or take home and reheat in the oven. The portion size is large worth every penny! A must try. A friend of mine had heard about this place. I love anything Brazilian so I was totally game to try it! I didn't know much about it so I read the other reviews and checked out their menu. I definitely wanted to try the acai bowl blended with banana and topped with granola and more fresh banana. This is quite a bowlful that is filling, so healthy, and it makes you feel like you are doing your body a huge favor! I probably overdid it by also eating a couple coixinhas: chicken/cheese and heart of palm/cheese - loved them! Probably not as healthy but oh so good, fried and crispy hot! The guy there was so friendly and helpful as this was our first visit to Sunstream. Sunstream is easy to get to on the 38 bus, and it is near the new City Target with Best Buy, so grab some food and then do some shopping or have a snack afterwards. Either way, Sunstream is a great treat! It's a tiny place though with seating for maybe 9-10 at the most, so you'll either score a seat or will need to take it to go (we got lucky thank goodness and grabbed a couple window seats). Ok here goes another one of my extremely bias reviews about a Brazilian-style café. I will start with why despite my biasness I am offering up 4 stars for Sunstream. My wife and I have been to this café three times despite us living 105 miles away in the Sacramento area and each time we have been they are ALWAYS out of Pao de Queijo. I understand that other people must love it too, but we have even gotten there super early to make sure they didn't run out and they were still out! Common guys! Clearly people are loving the Pao de Queijo so you gotta cook way more so we can all enjoy some after traveling 105 miles just to eat it! Ok, now that the rant is over with because I am sad due to Pae de Quiejo withdrawals we can get to the good stuff. All of their other pastries are SO GOOD! The coconut rolls and the cachorro quenche (hot dog) pastries are just so "Braziliany" delicious. Thank you Brazil for having just some of the most amazing food ever and thank you to the Brazilians who own and run this shop and do all the cooking because it just brings me back to living their every time I come to visit. Thank you for importing the amazing Guarana and for the authenticity you bring. It is an absolute joy eating here and just sitting by the window watching some good old fashion Brazilian TV. Another down side is there is VERY little seating, but I think the style of Sunstream is more of an on the go kind of place rather than sit and chat kind of place, but they do have some seating if you wanted to make a stand. Had to pop in over the weekend. And luckily, scored a nearby parking spot. Apparently, it was right before they closed. I was ecstatic! Hadn't been in here in years and was so happy that they're still around. (They had just opened a short while before I moved away from this area.) I had to get the coxinha with chicken and cream. Bought 3 of them and one didn't make it home. They're much better when they're piping hot. The seafood version was good but not a favorite. But it is ginormous. Beef and olive pastel was delicious. Carrot cake = awesome. Now, don't think of the cream cheese frosting and sweet brown cake. Think of yellow/orange cake with chocolate frosting. He couldn't get enough of it. Guava gummy candy = win. Service = friendly. I just wish I knew/remembered any of the food item names. I end up just asking for a description. Prices = moderate. Everything was around $23.00. When I come here, I'm sure the clouds part and let some sun stream through. It only makes sense because this place is SO yummy and would bring sunshine to anybody's life! My first time here, I got an acai bowl and was in Brazilian heaven! The guy was really generous with the granola (YES!) and the acai tasted sooo yummy! I've had other acai bowls and it's usually chunky/icy, they skimp on the toppings, or it just tastes bleghhh. Their pastries and savories are awesome too! I like the coconut cake and the coxinha (like a round deep fried thing filled with chicken and cheese). They don't always have everything that's listed on the menu, but I'm sure no matter what they have, it will be delicious! :) It's a really small place, but hey, you get cozy with all the people in there! Sometimes it feels like you're in a Brazilian friend's kitchen because there's usually a Brazilian show on the TV and most of the customers (at least every time I've been) are laughing and kidding around in Brazilian. I have yet to try their fruit juices and smoothies, but I will soon! Solid coffee, delicious pastries, good price. I stopped by Sunstream Coffee this morning because I had an appointment nearby that I was more than an hour early to. While I initially was just going to grab a coffee and chill, the pastry and lunch display caught my attention. Though the experience is a bit overwhelming (tiny place with seats, crammed with items, many people speaking Portuguese, mysterious snacks, really loud juicing machine), Sun Stream is a gem of a place where you can get authentic Brazilian treats. I wasn't interested in their smoothies or acai bowls but the savory Brazilian snacks (salagados like esfiha, empadinha, risolis, quibe) and sweet pastries (coconut cake, carrot cake, etc.) intrigued me. They had descriptions of each Brazilian snack and maybe 18 or so types to choose from. Some were baked and some were fried. They're served warm and you can add some hot sauce that they have in squeeze bottles (really good hot sauce that's actually spicy!). I didn't see the prices listed of the snacks and pastries. When I ordered my latte, the guy who was supposed to help me didn't seem to understand me but then someone else translated. Hmm. I tried: * Coxinha (translation: chicken leg) - Wow, CRAZY good; this teardrop shaped deep fried puff, a famous street food in Brazil, is something everyone should try. The outside is slightly sweet and crunchy like a hush puppy and the inside is soft, warm and creamy, oozing with a mild cheese that surrounds shredded chicken. * Americano - not to insult Brazil, but it was like a ham and cheese Lean/Hot Pocket. The cheese was mild and the ham didn't really stand out. It had some tomato in it too. Served warm. * Pao de Queijo - "cheese roll" - I expected a wheat roll. Instead, it was chewy and resembled a cheese mochi - baked and slightly crusty on the outside. It's made with manioc flour. I wouldn't say that I loved it but I didn't dislike it either. It was different. * Brazilian coffee latte - Pretty good. Had a distinctive taste, earthy I guess. Wasn't bitter but had a good smoothness to it. The bottom of the cup had the a significant amount of coffee grinds (more than should be in there). They also have sandwiches (they seemed like regular sandwiches - not sure if they are Brazilian influenced), Brazilian sodas (Kim N./KQN you need to check these out), and probably other things I'm not even aware of. Hidden little gem this place is and easy to miss. I've been craving acai bowl as of late and how many places in SF actually sell these? Last time I got one was from some new age hippie selling it in a vegan shop exclaiming the virtues of a gluten free, antioxidant rich, and health conscious values of going vegan. His acai bowl was friggin $12 but half the amount that Sunstream offers. I like authenticity and I like value. Well, now I know of a place in SF where you can get your dose of the super-antioxidant berry bowl to counterbalance the many deep fried Brazilian pastries they have to offer. The pastries sit in an oven display case so it's hot and ready to eat and I devoured it. The acai bowl is $7.40 with tax. Place is quite small so I got my food to go. Ok, so if you've ever gotten the acai bowl in santa cruz or the potato balls from porto's in LA, well, i found the perfect place in SF that tends to both your needs. They have an acai shake that is pretty fantastic, its a hell of an energy booster, and its delicious! expect nothing less than amazing from this tiny shop. I didn't know what to get from their pastry section, so i just pointed at a hotdog pastry, a shrimp pastry, and a chicken/cheese pastry. and holy crap! PORTOS aint got nothing on Sunstream Coffee! Flaky crust, the inside of the pastry was magnanimous, regardless of what you pick. The only thing i regret is the amount of oil i ate along with the deep fried pastries. Before you go there and try one try and not be a jackass and learn how to pronounce it (Ah.Sigh.EE ). I love just saying the word. Authentic Brazilian cafe with the typical things you would find at a cafe or stand in Sao Paulo or Rio. I dig that I can get my Guarana Soda on here. I'll always buy like 5 and take them home for later. the Pastries are a mixed bag - I wish I knew the names of the stuff but I either forgot or never learned what they were. Wow...I miss Brazil...a LOT. We were there in August for my cousin's beautiful wedding. Even though the wedding was amazing...I'm such a foodie that all I could think about was the wonderful flavors and food of Brazil. My fiance and I would be in Rio and 1 o'clock in the morning we could go to your local fresh fruit smoothie snack shop and pick up a couple of Acai berry smoothies as we walk back from the bar to our hotel. Yum! Now, I never thought we could find the same sweet healthy goodness unless we went back to Brazil but who knew...Just 5 minute scooter ride to Sun Stream Coffee and we could have it all. For what it is, Sunstream Cafe is unbelievably awesome. A small, quaint Brazilian cafe with exceptional staff that are there to answer any and all questions you have on their food and drinks. Delectable food and drinks too. A must try, obviously is the acai bowl or shake (with milk, and the staff are diligent in asking to make sure they don't serve it to lactose intolerant folks, I suppose). I LOVE the shake, I simply cannot have enough of it.--so fresh and the little bits of granola in it are divine! Today I decided to grab a savory bite as well and picked up a pastry puff that had cheese, ham, tomatoes and hearts of palm. The verdict--DELISH!! It's like the Brazilian version of a Chinese savory bun...more bready Spanish/Filipino empanada...and my only gripe is that it was tiny. I could have had another! You must try the coxinha! This warm tear drop shaped pastry filled with superbly salted chicken and cream cheese has me considering a move to Brazil. I'd like to eat my way down the pastry menu since there appear to be lots of interesting and appealing sounding snacks (waistline be damned!) but it's hard for me to order something other than this deep-fried wonder. For those of you with a fix on fruit, their acai bowl (or cup, if you order to go) is a refreshing and filling treat. Super amazing; a new addiction of mine; one of my favorite places. I almost gave it 4 stars, because it's a bit pricey, but ultimately the quality of everything they serve and the fact it's one of my favorite places won me over. Even just looking at the menu online to jog my memory makes me want to go back right now... They have a wide variety of pastries that are mouth-watering. Beef, chicken, corn, cheese...take your pick; all of that I've had have been fantastic. They're also quite filling; 1 of them and an acai is a hearty lunch. Not to mention that everything from the pastries to the drinks to the employees is authentic. Speaking of the acai...I haven't had much experience with it; this is the first and only place I've had it, but it is out of this world tasty. It seems like something that is allegedly healthy shouldn't taste this good. Like an amazing mix of berries and cinnamon and and......It tastes healthy and sweet and tasty all at once. Excellent. Soft drinks - they have Brazilian soft drinks too; I had a Guarana one that was delicious. The employees are also super helpful; the guy working there is really friendly and happy to explain what each of the pastries are - and to make modifications to drinks or acai to make them perfect for each individual's dietary needs and tastes. On top of the excellent employees, the decor and the size really make this a cute, independent hole-in-the-wall, the sort of place SFans - myself included - adore. The only real complaint I have is price...nothing in SF is cheap these days, it seems, but smoothies start at $6.40 and go up from there...if you want to eat lunch here, it's going to be $10+ even if it's just one pastry and a smoothie. Yes I am a fan. :) Although I've heard that Acai is as common in Brazil as apples are in America, I was excited to try the famous Asai bowl here. Let's just say that on a sunny, warm day in SF, this bowl of refreshing fruity goodness is amazing on the taste buds. But, let's get real, since the sunny, warm day in SF will only happen 4 days a year - likely days where you're trapped behind a desk, I'd encourage SFers to try the Acai bowl even on the chilliest of summer days. I did. And, I liked it....hypothermia and all. If your only knowledge of Acai is from the ingredients list on your Jamba Juice, here's a quick run down of what it is and what to expect in your bowl .... and mouth: Acai: (a-sa-ee) - "is a Brazilian berry original from the Amazon Region that is considered to be one of nature's most complete and healthy foods. The acai berry is loaded with antioxidants, amino acids, essential omegas, fibers and protein." It tastes like: most other berries. Maybe a combo between strawberry and raspberry? When in bowl: looks like a purple mound of icy goodness topped with granola and almonds. Perfect light meal or snack. You may also see it: in a smoothie which I tried this weekend. I loved the texture of granola ground up and mixed in with the Acai. If you are not in the mood for a smoothie or fresh juice drink (there are a ton of exotic - and not so exotic - flavors), there are sandwiches (which looked pretty basic but yummy), pastries and various curious looking candies. Prices - decent for fresh fruit treats - but not the place to go if you're looking to spend a couple bucks on a quick drink 'cuz you'll get a $5 meal in a cup. read more

Sunstream Coffee is a neat little spot about the size of a walk-in closet. These pocket-sized sandwich pastries were what I read up on, and I had a chicken salgado and a ground beef risoli. The chicken salgado had a sweet/savory mixture inside a soft pastry that is a cross between the kind found in a baked char-siu bau and a curry beef turnover (I, ABC, eat a lot of Chinese food hehe). The ground beef risoli is a pastry covered in bread crumbs and deep-fried like a croquette. Anything fried is usually good, and the risoli hit the spot. I'd say my Brazilian pocket-sandwich lunch was about a 3.5. read more

The existence of this place makes me sad I left san francisco. The acai bowl is like a giant icy pool of purple goodness. Its very filling, and yet incredibly refreshing. If you're still hungry, the obvious choice is the pao de queijo, a type of bun that is baked with cheese and therefore chewy and soft. These babies have to be eaten piping hot, so make sure to stand around stuffing your face as soon as the friendly guy behind the counter hands you your order (its ok, everyone else is doing it too). I would really recommend using the fiery orange hot sauce that they have lying around on the cheese buns, the other baked goods, and pretty much everything - except maybe the acai bowls and shakes. Came here for the acai bowls once, returned a few times! The acai bowls here are legit! No frills, just big bowls of acai! For $6, you really can't complain. It almost beats making them at home! Food is good. I have been there before. But today (first part of February2013) I tried to order something to go as delivery. I was told, 'Sorry we only deliver in March and April'. What sort of crap is that? I won't bother with this place again! In fact I looked at their website, and they plastered free delievery ($15 order at up) all over the place! This is false advertising and FRAUD! Look folks, if you are advertising delivery, then DELIVER as close to 365 days a year as possible! Not just two months or one sixth of a year! I always pass by here on my way to go shopping on Clement- so decided to stop in this time... Its a small cafe- two tables inside and your ordering booth- I love that everything here is fresh- including the pastries ( doughy buns with condensed milk and raisin and cream cheese fillings) and an assortment of (baked/ fried) buns- with fillings of chicken, ham and hotdog...There's a long list of FRESH juice combination- one to my liking was the Orange juice with papayas...Im going to try the uvas - the grape juice (fresh) and more of the buns next time im back...perhaps then the other star will shine ;-) Bom Dia! read more

I would give this place a 5 but service is important and this place is lacking. I've been here twice and I always feel rushed. There are a lot of Spanish speakers that come here and they all seem to know the employees, unfortunately I'm not able to communicate the same way... However they are fast so if you're on the go it's perfect. I've tried the chicken coxinha (co-shin-ha) and it's really savory. Definitely try it if you have the chance, it's unique. Brazilian coffee is bitter and not strong (in my opinion). I had it black but I didn't feel anymore awake than I was before. Then again I have a high caffeine tolerance so maybe it'll be strong for others. My most recent try was the acai bowl. ($6.80, $7.40 with tax). Decent, but it was a bit watery. It comes with bananas and granola on top, not as embellished as other bowls but it was still delicious. A true gem! I'm definitely new to this side of Brazilian culture. My exposure to the Brazilian culinary scene was limited to churrascarias and latin-fusion restaurants. However, my brother and his friend, having been to Rio, Sao Paolo, and other various Brazilian destinations, helped me find this tiny, easy-to-miss cafe on Geary. And what a find it was! I love this place now. You really can drive by this place a hundred times and not notice the small cafe in the middle of a block, two doors down from a Psychic Shop. Add to that, you've just driven through the tunnel that goes under Masonic, and you're still getting reaquainted to the numerous storefronts on the usually fast-paced part of Geary Blvd. But just keep on the lookout...and it's easy to spot. As you drive West on Geary, it's located on the right hand side, on the block right after you come up from the Masonic tunnel. You need to be in the right lane. You can pass it and turn right on the first side street - there's usually street parking there. I like going there on a weekend morning - a perfect way to start the day. I love the Rio bowl - Acai (a frozen tropical treat, sort of between a smoothie and a sorbet) topped with oatmeal and a sliced banana. The quantity is pretty big, and it always fills me up. Sometimes I can barely finish the thing. Also, being that it's a frozen treat, if you have sensitive teeth, you might want to try one of the other menu items. They have all sort of pastries (including Pao de Quejo), breakfast foods, smoothies, coffee/espresso, and other Brazilian snacks. You'll have a field day trying each little thing - I know I always do! The cafe itself is small, so can get a bit crowded. But go there at 10 AM on Saturdays - the side street has street cleaning until 10 AM on Saturdays, so you'll find parking easily. Plus, the place won't be too crowded, but you'll get the usual hustle and bustle of a weekend morning. Btw, when you do visit this place, pick up a menu. Although the items are listed in Portuguese (yes...Portuguese...they don't speak "Brazilian" in Brazil, in case you didn't know), you'll notice on thing - THEY DELIVER!!! I have had the best experience in Brazilian food and culture. The açaí bow is the best in the Bay Area. The pastries are always fresh and the daily variety of sweet options like coconut cake and the sweet roll makes every morning special. I went all the way to Brazil last year and didn't even realize this place was a Brazilian coffee shop right around the corner from my place. It sits in the block where there isn't much going on, and for some reason I remember that there were clothes or something being peddled nearby and so thought it looked totally cheap on that side of the street. I'm glad that I've finally found it! Went there this morning and ordered a mocha, and one each of the chicken and beef empanadas. I love the crispy but grainy shell of the empanadas. Under that shell, there was what I think was a mushy potato layer, and then the goodies. Both were super tasty. The mocha, on the other hand, was watery and had no coffee flavor at all. I was so disappointed - especially when both guys behind the counter were SUPER cute. Mm-hmmm, wish they were on the menu. I can't wait to bring my Brazilian girlfriend in here so that she can talk with them in Portuguese and order something that's not on the menu and they can fawn all over her amazing Brazilian-ness. read more

By far the most authentic acai bowls in the city. Really great texture, not super icey and watered down. I hate when places (cough cough Judahlicious) water down their acai bowls and charge you $10 for ice. At Sunstream they only charge $7.40 including tax and it's super dank. Every time I come in here, everyone is speaking Portuguese and it seems like people just pop in to say hello. The coffee is also good. If you're looking for legit Brazilian snacks/sucos (juice)/acai then this is your place. read more

Came here for Breakfast and tried their Acai Bowl. It was a pretty good combination of granola, bananna, and something else. Service was friendly. Their pastries and juices looked good as well. I don't think my Acai Bowl was worth six bucks though. Decently sized portion yes, but nothing fancy enough to warrant that price tag for granola. When I came back for their Cream Cheese, Onion, and Chicken pasty 2 days later, however, I had to bump them up a star. This thing is delicious. It's got a battery shell and then you bite inside into a warm, gooey cheese filled pleasure. read more
