I'm super sentimental about this place because it was the restaurant my husband and I had brunch at the day we decided we wanted to move to Cornwall! It was a while back before Coronavirus began but our meal and that morning was so memorable I feel compelled to write a quick review now that we moved to the area and I drive by all the time. (We also went to 2 Alice's after brunch for coffee and I immediately fell in love with that place too.) It was freezing cold outside but Painter's had a glowing fire lit in the dining room fireplace which kept us warm and cozy during our meal even though we sat right next to the window as it snowed outside. I ordered a dish that was kind of a cross between huevos rancheros and shakshukos but it was a green sauce instead of red. Super flavorful and the portion was huge. My husband ordered nachos which were literally the biggest portion of nachos I've ever seen. He really liked my meal and as someone who doesn't eat meat, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the chili on his nachos didn't have meat in it! We ended up trading halfway through and still had leftovers to bring home. We definitely could have shared! (The only small thing we both weren't a fan of was that the lettuce mixed in to the nacho pile was strange because it wilted down to soggy mush under all the other hot ingredients. Hot lettuce is pretty awful but there really wasn't a lot mixed in so we easily just pushed it to the side.) Our waiter was also really nice and informative when I asked a couple of questions about the menu. We haven't been back yet since we moved to Cornwall but plan to soon especially because when we drove by tonight it looked like they had tons of socially distant searing set up outside! read more

My wife and I stopped in after an Army football game. We both had burgers and fries, which or cooked to perfection. We liked the atmosphere you could sit outside in the dining room or at the bar, so they were plenty of options. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Ugh painters. Everything is so mediocre. The menu.. the food.. the drinks.. i'll write about two separate occasions.. First - ordered a bottled beer and was served it with a glass on the side, but was hot. Must have been freshly washed which is nice obviously, but the glass should have been kept cold. Second - went for dinner at 530 on a tuesday afternoon. The dining room wasnt full, bar was full, food service was awfully slow and waitress seemed annoyed every time she stopped at our table. Each experience has been coupled with subpar food and so-so service. I wouldnt really recommend to anyone. read more

Surprisingly. This was my first time eating at painters. I spent most of my weekends growing up in the area but have never eaten here. I was impressed by the location and he price of the food. The Decore was quintessential upstate NY beautiful turn of the century house turned into a restaurant. My uncle said painters has been in Cornwall for years. My aunt and uncle had invited me for Sunday brunch at painters. The Sunday brunch was nice. They had a Sunday brunch section. If you selected a meal from the Sunday section it came with a mimosas or Bellini. I ended up ordering the eggs Benedict. I asked for regular bacon instead of Canadian bacon. I ordered 2 mimosas and a hot tea. Unfortunately I forgot to take photos except for my meal. My uncle had the same eggs Benedict. My aunt had a egg bowl. She told me it was very good. The eggs Benedict was very good for $16. The hollindsse was made from scratch. The potatos had good flavor. The bacon was very chrispy. Our service was ok. Our waiter was good but seemed distant. Or confused. All of our food came out just as ordered. He was bringing over drinks that were supposed to to other tables. Not a problem. But I felt bad for the guy I guess Overall. I would come back to painters for brunch. The food was very good the price was good for what you received. I would recommend painters to anyone. I will be back here. read more

We ate here just about every week during our vacation from the city this summer. It's a great place to eat for peace of mind during the Covid era - the tables outside are spaced wide apart and comfortable, and the waiters all wear masks. The food and drink is fantastic. I had a really delicious spicy peanut pasta dish. There is an extensive children's menu and my daughter enjoyed eating here too. The beer is very good. The atmosphere outside is great, with pretty garden plants and a beautifully painted blue tavern. You can see Storm King mountain while seated. One day I hope to come back and see what it looks inside! read more

It seems to me that the American Hamburger is experiencing a renaissance which appears on the surface a counter-intuitive statement however in the case of Painter's is not. I do not remember to name of the particular hamburger entree that I had however I am sitting at my desk some 2 weeks later reliving the experience, service and flavors...yes...they were that memorable...all of them. I have been going back and forth to West Point over the last 5 years and unfortunately just discovered this restaurant at my Cadet's graduation. Not only was the hamburger and service superb but the craft been menu (a resurgence of Canadian Craft Beers as well as American) and the onion rings were quite notable. If you are a frequent visitor to the Highlands you should not overlook this restaurant. read more

I was just graced with the presence of this lovely restaurant as of yesterday. I ordered a steak sirloin is the mashed potatoes and the green beans. I ordered my sirloin in a medium rare and it was absolutely wonderful. My experience with the waitress/staff was great as well and I look forward to another visit very soon. I recommend visiting this place if you have not. Do keep in mind that you may want to bring a nice chunk of change because some of the items are a little bit pricey but they are well worth it. Also if you want to order drinks, definitely ask for their drink menu. They have a huge selection! read more

Service was sub par. It took about 10mins after we were seated to come over to us. The food we ordered was just not very good and horribly overpriced. The salad I ordered said it came with candied pecans but came out with walnuts. Our server was friendly but not very good. The wrong order came out originally (honest mistake no big deal I suppose it was immediately corrected) and our glasses were empty majority of the time. All we drank was water so nothing crazy. Try for yourself and hopefully you have a better experience but keep low expectations. read more

Went there for the first time with my wife. We are new to the area (after living in NYC for 45 years), after recos by locals. The decor is a bit dreary and dated: 1960s rural farmhouse decor. The odor hits you when you go in: damp and musty. I am guessing that the carpeting holds the odors. Why restaurants have carpeting is beyond me: spills no doubt happen daily, you likely need to shampoo-clean them daily, and the smells never come completely out, and then you have to contend with the cheap perfume odor of the cleaning agent. As for the food: it was meh, disappointing, nothing to write home about. Service was fine. Have not gone back. read more

Painters is the gem of a place to eat in Cornwall and I highly recommend it. The aviance was truly historic with beautiful fall leaves in the driveway. We we're greeted warmly and our party of 6 was seated immediately event though they where very busy. It took a liitle while to be serve, but it gave us time to go thru their lengthly menu of beer and food. I really liked that almost everything was available in half portions ( which were still a nice portion) so if you were not starving you still could enjoy the fare. Food was good, but not always exactly as discribes on the menu. Slightly diappointing. But I would still go back! and bring my friend and family. read more

Attended the customer appreciation dinner on 12/4/17 from 6pm-8pm. I have to say it was mediocre. The food was eh..nothing to brag about. The dessert was pathetic..brownies/blondies (tasted old) probably got from BJs & Pepperidge farm cookies (the boring butter cookies). I have attended other customer appreciation Dinners in the past they were excellent. Food was awesome & so were the desserts. But in the past 2 -3 years they have gone downhill with their food. Maybe they have a new ownership. If you're going to have customer appreciation dinner next year, have better food & awesome desserts like you used to have & you won't get any negative reviews! read more

I had fond memories of Painters from living in the Cornwall area many years ago, and was anxious to return during a recent visit from the West Coast. Either my memories have been tainted by a haze of nostalgia, or something has drastically changed in the quality of food and surroundings. The interior used to be charming and rustic, but is now rather dated and unappealing. We chose to sit in the outdoor patio in the front of the restaurant, since it was a very warm night. We started with a glass of Prosecco and a whiskey, while we enjoyed a cheese platter. Delicious fig jam, crackers, and two hard cheeses, (One of which was oddly sweet), one scoop of goat cheese, arugula, balsamic vinegar, apple slices, and a honey drizzle. I missed having a semi soft cheese such as a Brie etc., but it was still very good. Unortunately, the rest of the meal disappointed: we ordered barbecued brisket which was tasty, but incredibly dry and chewy. I tried really hard to be positive about it, but neither my fiancé or myself enjoyed this, or could finish the dish. The accompaniment, hunks of fresh corn, were soggy. I was very disappointed, so when the waitress asked how everything was, I was honest and let her know. She kindly offered to replace our food, but the thought of having to wait for something else to be prepared when we were so hungry made us decide just to keep it. I really just wanted her to pass this along to the manager, not to be simply a whiner. Service itself was decent, but not excellent, despite a mainly empty restaurant on Monday night. Maybe lunch is better, but I would not return for dinner nor recommend this place for anything other than a drink and cheese platter on the patio. read more

What a lovely little spot. Off the beaten path but worth the trek. Started with a nice German Double Bock by Celebrator. Had the turkey burger (maybe the best ever) with sweet potato fries (cooked just right). Also had the warm goat cheese salad and added chicken. What a nice combo of tastes. Loved it. I've visited twice and both times, I'm not disappointed. The service is always wonderful and the atmosphere makes you feel like you are in a comfy bed&breakfast. The menu has a great variety of food as well as beer. My first visit, I had the chicken gyro and it was tasty. Today I had the turkey sandwich. My fiancé and I had been to Painter's for his birthday we decided we had to take my parents there. Last night we finally got to take them and they loved it as much as we do. We started all ordering beers from there amazing beer menu (ciders also they carry graft which is my favorite). Following we got French onion soups and there soup of the day which were all very good. For meals we got the dragon bowl, ragu pasta, hanger steak, burrito and a gyro and we were all blown away by our dishes. They offer half servings of a lot of the pasta dishes and I got a half serving of the ragu braised short rib pasta and still had to bring more then half home! Great vibes!!! read more

Used to go here a lot, but in the last two years or so, the quality has gone downhill. I think they had an ownership change, and it seems they're cutting costs and corners now, to the restaurant's detriment. The food used to be great, but it's steadily lost quality. I had the cheesesteak melt, and while it tasted ok, it was obvious it had been sitting in the kitchen for a good while. The cheese had hardened up and it was room temperature, not hot (or even warm). Had the steak sandwich a few months ago and it was mediocre with a complete lack of flavor. The service is painstakingly slow and just gets worse every time. I'm not asking to be rushed, but it's usually a long time waiting for anything. Last time I went, they brought the bread to the table AFTER the main course. Painter's does have one of the best drink selections in the area though. read more

Arite, so the menu gave me an extreme OCD attack. Different colored sheets, fonts were all over the place, tacos in the Pasta section, hoodies in the sides section, inconsistent ORing on the beer menu, prices missing or forgotten... I couldn't stop looking at the tragedy that is this menu layout. And the food was at times good, sometimes weird flavoring though prepared very well. Like the beautiful pad Thai that my friend gave a shot... looked amazing but tasted like ketchup, and the sons noodles in that was previously forgiven for the sake of fusion, I guess. Some of the entrees looked very good like the fish & chips but not at 24 dollars. And the fried chicken should not be in the 20s either. The salads, too, had substance but also a bit of price attached to it. Loved our server. Fun layout of the restaurant. The beer selection is great but, again, its presentation of it on the menu is not. Would I go back? Definitely if I was playing with someone else's money. I'd get those huge nachos and some interesting beer. I'd also be willing to experiment. I kind of wish there were pictures of all the dishes somewhere too. I really like Painters, in an area where unique, creative dining is at a premium. Painters satisfies many needs & wants. Their menu has some great entrees with creative twists without going overboard. Additionally, Painters has a great selection of drink, particularly beers, from chewy stouts to pleasant Begian desert beers. Their wine list is representative as well. I really enjoy the wait staff at Painters, they're nice people and never have I encountered a "Bad Hair Day" server. They really do make your dinner all the better for being there and their attention to your enjoyment. If the weather is mild, get a table outside, eve on a rainy day, you're protected and it is very comfortable When in the Hudson Valley, do swing over to Painters Pub for an hour or two of pleasant dining and a great experience. read more

Had a hamburger the hamburger was on a English muffin with some type of garlic oil on the bun the burger was too dry and we had a table of four and we got bad service, bad food and really really overpriced. I suggest not to go here. Update: June 4 2016 So, I wanted to give this place another chance unfortunately it was bad. So, I ordered the chicken tenders not the burger. And the chicken was like rubber and tasted like they heated it up in the microwave. My father had the chicken Parmesan and chicken was dry but, ok. Very meh unfortunately. I ordered a $32 sirloin and I ordered it rare. It came out near well done and was tasteless and dry. Sadly the $10 steak from a chain like Texas Roadhouse is better than this. Went there last Sunday with a party of 7. The staff and service were​ EXCELLENT. The atmosphere was friendly and warm. I did see several small humans commonly referred​ to as children, however, their handlers had them under control so that wasn't an issue. Drinks arrived shortly​ after ordering, the waiter had a complete and deep knowledge of their tap beers. The dishes were as followed, 1 Grilled Natural Hamburger on Sesame Seed Bun, 2 Buffalo Buttermilk Chicken, Creamy Blue Cheese & Cheddar focaccias, 2 Painter's Lemon Chicken, 1 Fish & Chips and 1 Grilled Hanger Steak. Everyone was completely satisfied​ with their orders. They arrived in a reasonable amount of time for the size of the tables order. Definitely​ try the Butterscotch Pudding OUTSTANDING!!!... I couldn't finish it, and I'm an old dude that can eat, and eat​ and eat. read more

Sweet little inn and tavern. They are kid friendly, group friendly and the space feels all historical (sort of old New York state ghosty). You'll find frat boys tabled next to Hell's Angels. read more

Had lunch here the other day and ordered the veggie focaccia. It was a large portion and quite tasty, although it was cold by the time I finished it and you have no idea how fast I can eat! The place has a neat atmosphere with old wooden floors and a unique look and feel. Outside seating is also available. The service was good, even though the waitress spilled a drink on my pants. It was not cheap though. The tab for 3 of us at lunch was $55 before tip. Cornwall looks like a cool town to investigate. read more

I'm from Orange County, but I live in NYC, and I visit my parents who live in Orange County pretty often. We all like Painter's, it's good, but it isn't knock your socks off amazing. I'll break it down below. Atmosphere is really nice, I think. There is a formal dining are and a bar area. The bar area gets pretty rowdy, and I wouldn't recommend sitting there if you have kids. The beer selection is quite large, and there is also a good selection of wines and drinks, which is probably why the bar area gets crowded. The walls are covered in paintings by local artists, which for the most part are pleasing to look at, and it helps give the restaurant a relaxed feel. I've found all the servers to be very friendly and helpful, though a lot of them are younger folks from the Orange County area. The food is a sort of neo-American mixed with a few Thai and American-Asian dishes. Some dishes have been below average, others well above. I've found the quality and even quantity of dishes to be quite skewed. Artisan cheese plate appetizer - not enough cheese for the price. Mediterranean dips and pita - excellent size for a group of three and taste great too. Main courses follow the same road. I've found the meats, burgers and sandwiches to all be pretty good, but the pastas are fairly average. If you are looking for a good pasta I'd recommend elsewhere. I haven't got desert here, but their coffee is always pretty good. Overall, a solid three stars, and a good experience. read more

Painter's is very eclectic-- from the menu to the servers and even to the space itself. I had a warm goat cheese salad that came with mandarin oranges and almonds-- perfect combination of flavors-- and a side of fries. C couldn't decide what he wanted, so he had a half order of their pulled pork and sweet potato fries, and a half order of Isabella's Shells-- the half orders are ENORMOUS and both were great. Isabella's shells came with crumbled sausage and a pink sauce. Our only disappointment was the nachos, which came with run of the mill supermarket chips and so-so guac, but it was forgivable after we got our entrees. They were having a beer sale (my kind of sale!) so C's beers were only $2 each! The chairs were a little uncomfortable, and we kind of giggled at the paintings displayed, which were on sale for upwards of $600 and looked like my seminal 1st grade work. I have been to painters several times in the last 10 years. The first time was it upon the occasion of my sons graduation from the United States military Academy. I had to beg for water refills the service was terrible. The bill was very high and I left a minimal tip because the service was so slow and so bad. They actually chased me outside to ask why I had left such a poor tip. The next time was OK nothing special. But tonight with my boyfriend we were looking for a special meal. Service was fine food was marginal at the top market prices. I don't think I'll ever come here again. Can't recommend. Find another one of the gems around West Point. read more

Was very much looking forward to getting out to eat tonight and we decided on Painter's . There were four of us seated outside of course . We ordered cocktails as well as soda . The Cocktails and wine were fine but the Soda was all seltzer . We let the waiter know and was told there was nothing they could do about that. We ordered three appetizers one of them being the pretzels with beer cheese and mustard. The pretzel was very hard where we were expecting a soft pretzel as we have gotten this in so many other numerous places. We ordered our entrées which was a limited menu. I ordered the beyond burger that came with Swiss cheese , mushrooms and a mayo rosemary aigo . I stated cooked medium With sweet potato fries and a side of onion rings . When my burger came, I knew something tasted "off" and it also came on a multi seeded bun. I called the waiter over and explained I have diverticulitis and cannot have the seeds could he give me a plain roll and I explained that something tasted "off" with the burger . He Then tells me it's a veggie burger. Nowhere on the menu did it mention this burger was a veggie burger nor did it say it came on a seeded roll. (A lot of people have allergies I'm surprised about the seed part). The onion rings were burnt and dry . He asked me if I wanted to take it to go even after I said I did not care for the burger. He did not ask me if I wanted to replace it with something else, nor did he ask me if I wanted it removed from the Bill and walked away. Another waitress comes over to give us our check I then explained to her about the burger and how it should definitely be stated as a veggie burger on the menu and told her I didn't care for it and sent it back she still proceeded to give us the bill and walk away. We wanted to split the bill three ways so we were discussing that when she stood there hovering over us. I've never seen anything like this where someone is rushed to pay the check . Have water here many times over the years having grown up in Cornwall on Hudson. Last night we ate here. Food quality not what it once was. Hamburgers were over cooked. One came out on a English muffin. Steak was also over cooked - ordered med well. Fries also slightly burnt. Dragons bowl over soaked in Peanut oil. My bf and I came up here for the weekend. We started off with the gorgonzola fondue appetizer (which was ridiculously unhealthy but so delicious). For our main course I had the duck sliders and my bf had the Painter's Burrito with pulled chicken. Both dishes were delish (my bf finished his ginormous burrito). For dessert we had the green tea ice cream which was aiiiiteee but on the menu/per the waitress this is a gelato but the consistency and texture just wasn't "gelato-ey". The decor in Painter's is very cute - kinda like a barn meets art gallery. I'm a fan of cute places like this however, the atmosphere felt kinda depressing and a bit too dim (not romantic/good mood dim but dingy dim). We dined in the main room (the back is where the bar is) and it was a decent size. Lots of the diners were families and other young'uns (teenagers? college-ers?). While the food was good, the atmosphere really just wasn't doing it for me. The plus of Painter's is that its one of the few places in the area that's open late and has a bar. If I'm in the area, I would definitely come back tho as the food options on the menu piqued my curiousity. read more

This place is neat- original art work, (unfinished) murals painted on the walls, yard sale looking decos ALL over the place, comfortable enough beds and bathrooms in each room. We were there for a birthday adventure and had a private room for a party. The food was good, the shower pressure was super, the staff was helpful and friendly. I also like a place I can get up and make my own coffee (Oscar was there to show me where it was) in the morning. BUT. REALLY, really thin walls. REALLY. Walls so thin I could hear the woman sobbing next door. Literally sobbing. It was clearly a man and a woman having a conversation/discussion/argument- I could hear it all. And she was sobbing. After about 45 minutes of the waterworks (and what seriously sounded like ugly-cry-face tears) I rapped on the wall twice and it settled down. Poor lady.
