As many times as I have been to Painter's, I was surprised I hadn't reviewed yet. They are under new management and back open for business! The menu is not overly complicated with great options. They also have specials on certain nights. The bar area has seating in the room, and there are separate quieter dining rooms and an amazing second bar and space. The second bar is open on weekends and for private events. The have great outside seating which is really nice in warm weather. Fabulous dog sculpture in the bar. I didnt want to sit on it till the sign said don't sit on it. :) It's definitely a local spot... and you always want to go where the locals go. I got the Buttermilk chicken flatbread with Buffalo sauce. The amount of cheese on it was phenomenal, and I didn't even have to ask for extra cheese! My friend and local got the beet salad. It looked to die for, and he was quite pleased. It was a little loud for him in the bar area, but I was able to tune it out. There were quite a few folks in there. The service was great and we were well taken care of. The Chritmas decorations were still up, and it was all beautiful. Great visit! read more

The interior decoration of the front entrance, dining room and front tavern area is quite nice. We had a lunch reservation for 9 and when we showed up they said is it ok if we seat you in the back tavern area? We can push some tables together. That area is nothing in ambience to the cozy and warm dining room. In fact it was refrigerator cold with cold air blowing from vents above the tables they pushed together. Our 96 year old guest was miserable as were we. We asked to be seated in the dining room where it was warmer and they said if we waited for a party to leave we could or said " you can sit outside ". (It was grey and cold outside) what an insult especially having a reservation. We were on time and they should have had a table set aside for our party. This was a lovely relaxing restaurant. We were greeted immediately and the wait staff was definitely experienced and on their game. It had the comforts and food quality of a high end restaurant without the outrageous prices. We had the filet mignon and lobster tail special for $48. Both were perfectly cooked to order. So I was eating on the patio of this restaurant yesterday evening when I noticed a verbal disagreement happening nearby. I didn't hear how it started, but one man walked out saying something like, "I'm done with this place... that lady is crazy," apparently referring to a woman who works at the front desk. An older male staff member from the front desk followed the guy outside and defended her, saying, "She's not crazy," and then the situation quickly escalated into a back-and-forth exchange of insults. At one point, the staff member shouted after the guest and the guest responded with similar language. Things escalated further when the staff member picked up an object from a nearby table and made a threatening comment toward the guest, and then advanced quickly toward the guest, which made the situation feel like it could become physical. The guest said he was recording the interaction, and the staff member eventually backed off. During the exchange, the staff member used a slur that is widely considered deeply derogatory toward gay people. Politics briefly came up during the argument, and the staff member made comments in support of people who identify with "making the country great again" messaging. I don't know what happened inside the restaurant before this incident, but witnessing a staff member threaten a guest and use that kind of language was very concerning. I actually enjoyed the food, but after seeing that, I personally won't be returning. It didn't feel like an environment I'm comfortable supporting. read more

We followed the procedure to make a reservation which involves texting the information to a phone number. We never heard back. We called the restaurant and no one ever answered. Sadly, the owner of this restaurant discriminated against me as a disabled person. threatening me and denying access with my service dog, My dog wears a service dog vest, has tags and official paperwork as a registered service dog, which I carry with me always. The absolute rude and condescending behavior was not only shocking, her actions are illegal and actionable, as defined by the American Disabilities Act. Find somewhere else to eat, a place owned by respectful, and kind people. read more

This is an establishment I go to at least once a week. We love the atmosphere and the food. I also love that it is one of those places you see everyone you know from town. That being said it is one of the only upscale bars in town too, and lately everyone I know has been told they are done serving them drinks at a very early hour, 8:35 for some. It seems like they could find a way to keep the front bar open till 11 or 12 with maybe just a smaller menu of Bites and it would be a hit! But to be enjoying a Friday or weekend night out and be told before 9 you need to finish your drink and go is not only rude, but it is bad business. It's a small town and people talk. I think that can work to your benefit or your detriment. I hope they consider making a change to the hours. read more

The owner has created an art themed dining area with a very chic and fun lounge and a back bar. To top it all off the porch overlooks lovely downtown corn Wallace on the Hudson. Very underwhelming experience. While the host was super nice and charming, he was so chatty and asked where we were from and we discovered we were from similar areas in Queens. We chose to eat inside as we spent most of the day at Storm King in the heat, we sat at a cute table for 2 but directly under the blasting A/C but sucked it up because we were so hot most of the day. Anyway, our waitress was cute and did her best to recommend her "favorites" although we asked what was popular. The drinks came out I had a margarita and my cousin had a beer so nothing fancy so I would say they were both decent. The app which we chose the buttermilk calamari which was underwhelming, over cooked a bit chewier than we would have liked, the marinara was good but the chipotle mayo was just eh! I ordered the steak and frits lol I guess they meant Frites which was part of the special, the steak was cooked ok I guess and the fries were good not greasy. My cousin had the sweet Thai chili salmon which tasted like it was from the fridge and over cooked not good at all. It had some pickled cucumbers with dill on top that made no sense being there. The veggies tasted fresh but the "Jasmine" rice also tasted like it was microwaved rice with tons of butter. The meal was a complete fail after a long day and two very hungry customers came in based on decent reviews. We will not be back but I'm sure they have enough elderly locals to support the business. read more

Husband and I went because we passed by and it was so pretty. The property is really delightful . We chose to sit inside, which was a mistake because it was freezing. The food was terrible. For appetizers we had the beet salad and the fried calamari. The salad was fine, the calamari was clearly from a frozen food whole seller, but at least it warmed us up a bit. Husband had a burger that was worse than what I would expect from a carnival truck. I had the French dip. It was terrible. Tasted like steak-ums with a side of Campbells onion soup for dipping. This was not restaurant quality food. Service was fine, none of this is the waiters fault. read more

Our son is at USMA now, and he gets a kick out of our old knowledge and history of the area's greatest places to go and see and EAT !! We came back Sunday for lunch. Cute place. This was our first time here. The place was crowded (& usually is). We called in advance and we're seated pretty quickly. Super relaxed dining & atmosphere. Husband said the men's room was fine but the ladies room was divey-I could have built better school-style stalls with no tools. Ok so carpenters they are not! Thus the name Painters-they had cute paintings for sale hanging everywhere. We were seated with no menus or silverware. I walked back to the front to grab the last menu. Our waiter said he'd get us water. A waitress came back with it and we told her we were ready to order- so she took it. The food came our pretty quickly. We sat inside- the main dining room with comfortable distance from other tables. When our lunch came i mentioned to the waitress that we needed silverware and Honey mustard and she brought them to us very quickly. I had just enough time to snap the 2 photos. The chicken wrap and sweet potatoes fries were good. The chicken was blackened with a nice kick to it. The bacon was super fatty so I pulled it out. The menu mentioned avocado but I didn't find any. The fries sweet and crispy. My husband ordered a small Caesar with shrimp. There were 5 large shrimp. On Saturday they have a light lunch and what looks like a solid breakfast. I think next time we'll give breakfast a go. I asked for a take out container which the waitress brought quickly but then she was gone in a flash. We had to hail down our initial waiter who assisted. He said sorry she sort of stole this table and we apologized since we told her we wanted to order when she brought the water. It was late and we were hungry ;) read more

If you have children or are brown, DO NOT GO HERE. The experience I had tonight was absolutely miserable. My family and I go out to dinner on Fridays to wash away busy weeks. This was not that. The service from the waitress was great but the food and drinks were slow. But to top it off, we had what I believe to be a racist experience. My husband (who is white) took our son to look at the art inside while my daughter and I waited for food. When he got back both kids wanted to go look at the art and I told my husband to sit tight and enjoy his beer. I (a multiracial woman) wandered inside with the children both holding my hands to look at art. We got to a sculpture near the bar and I heard someone shouting "21 & over only!". Obviously, I understand the laws of NY but we were no where near the bar, and not looking to order from there. I said back "I know just trying to entertain the kids, we are leaving!" In a calm voice. I was met back with "21 and over only!!" In an ever louder voice. Mind you, my white husband was in the exact spot with our son just minutes prior. I said "okay, I know" and as I'm trying to usher my children away from the art, I hear even louder "21 & up only!". At this point I paused and took a breath and decided to stand up for myself. Everyone wants the world to have kids, but god forbid we're in public (although my children were quiet but just wanted to see art). I responded back "you need to chill!" In a loud voice to match theirs. And the response was an even louder "21 and over only!!!!!!". At that point I told my children we needed to leave. We got back to the table and told the waitress that we were leaving and that the bartender needed a new job. I decided that while I was waiting for her to wrap up our food that I would speak to the host at the front. While I waited for him to seat another group, the same rude person came up to the area and I asked for their name. She said "Jocelyn" and I asked if she was the owner or she just worked there and she told me that she just worked there. I informed her that what she was doing while I was just trying to entertain my children was very rude and that I was never coming back. She began to speak to me in slurred speech and the waitress walked up. I informed the waitress that she was great but that this person needed a new job as they were so rude. She then took my nearly full glass of wine (that I had just gotten) and tells the waitress that I "didn't need anymore". I then went to search for them on facebook to find them and message them about what I had experienced and realized that Jocelyn was indeed the owner!! So sad that she realized she was wrong so she lied. I don't understand how miserable people can try to make other people's lives miserable but I will never go back and I'm hoping to reach an audience that won't ever go as well. I was charged in full for the glass of wine that she took from me and all of our food that I threw out because all of us had lost our appetite after such an act. People like this should not be restaurant owners. I just ask why it was okay for my white husband to walk into that area with my son, but not for me?! My children (3 &5 ) are also asking, "why was that lady screaming at mommy?!" read more

I have visited the quaint town of Cornwall on Hudson many times and am so excited that Painters Tavern has re-opened and under new ownership. The place is fabulous. The new owner is so incredibly friendly and inviting. The food is delicious and the decor is so creative and eclectic. Great for meeting friends for drinks, bring the family for dinner or even host a private event. I highly recommend checking the place out, you will NOT be disappointed. So so YUMMY!!!!! read more

I've given this place several chances since they reopened. The food is pretty good but every time I have gone the service is absolutely terrible. I have been in the restaurant industry for years so I am very forgiving. But it is terrible. If you sit on the patio you get ignored. Had to go inside for plates for our app & get napkins. Which we already had asked for but the waitress forgot. Owner was sitting at a table with regulars nearby but she is very unwelcoming and rude. She never asked us how we were doing. I got a virgin mojito & on the check it just said "mojito" for ten dollars. So they rang in a mojito and told the bartender don't put alcohol in it. Ten dollars for seltzer lime & mint? Ridiculous. Nobody seems trained or versed in hospitality in this place & there is new staff every time I have gone. I wonder why.... read more

I would give more stars but the lighting is way to0 bright! We went at 8pm and all the lights in the bar were blazing. It was so bright - felt like I was in a cafeteria. Lighting is important for ambiance. Bar lighting should be low and flattering not like you are in Target. Restaurant area the same. We have been to Painters several times and usually had good food and service. Tonight was not good as all. We ordered the wings and fish and chips. Neither were good. Our server didn't stop by and check on us until after we were finished. My plate of wings was untouched except for 1 bite I took of 1 wing She didn't even notice even after I asked for just a grilled chicken breast. The fish was dry and flavorless. Having been here twice now since reopening (about a week ago and today) I can say I'm thoroughly disappointed with the service staff here. The first time we tried about a week ago we walked in and expected a wait. We waited on a small line and were eventually told it'd be 15-20 minutes for a table, the host took our number, and said she'd call. Eventually we get a call while sitting in the bar area, and are informed the wait will be an hour now. We made the best of it, walked back home, and got a call maybe 45-50 minutes later. We went back, got our table, ordered drinks & food at the same time. Our waitress this first time was very friendly and as attentive as she could have been with how busy it was. Maybe 10 minutes after she left our food came out, great time for a busy kitchen. My french dip was fatty and bland. His fish and chips were crispy and good. Maybe about 15 minutes go by and our waitress notices no drinks but we were done with food, so she goes to check. They come, mine (the Hemingway) was very very very strong. Too strong to comfortably drink, it made our ears hurt. His lemonade drink tasted like all soda water. We got our check and said we'd try again. Fast forward to tonight, we go in and get a table immediately (yay!!). We ended up in the further bar room, no big deal. It was lively with lots of chatting. And then the music came on. It might have been set to just below full blast (sensory nightmare with that and the talking). Our waitress comes over and takes our drink order. A beer and a nutrl. I kid you not we waited 25-30 minutes for 2 cans that weren't poured for us. The glasses were warm so they may have ran out of glasses and were waiting, okay we can move past that. We put our food order in after our drinks came and that took about 15 minutes to come out. I got goat cheese salad, he got a med rare steak. My salad was decent, a little scarce on the toppings imo. His steak was more on the rare side but nothing too bad. Eventually though, he wanted salt and pepper (having none on the tables is weird) but our waitress was no where to be found. We tried to make eye contact with other staff and flag them down, nothing. Eventually, maybe 15 minutes later, he had to go up to the bar to ask for it. We finished our food and began another long wait for the check. 15 minutes go by and he goes to get up to find our waitress. She walked over right before he could get up fully and brought over the check. She was faster getting the check to us than she was during the entirety of our time there. Checking on tables is crucial regardless of how busy you might be. Having polite, friendly staff is important. Training and all being on the same page is essential. All in all the food is okay (again, kind of bland?), but the service is absolutely horrendous. The owner is very good at taking care of friends and not checking on anyone else. Hopefully with time they'll work out the kinks and learn to better train their staff. read more
