I found this place while searching for a brunch spot in Cornwall-on-the-Hudson, it had mixed reviews on Yelp but we decided to take the chance. We were doing a Paint and Sip at The Trestle, located within walking distance, and wanted to fill our bellies before heading over to show off our art skills while under the influence. It is called "Painters" because they showcase different artists' work, we happen to visit on a time when the walls were bare. My first impression when we walked in was a little on the Uh-O side.....the room we were seated in's interior was outdated and could definitely use some TLC. The carpet reminded you of a 1980s banquet hall and the chair I sat in had to be swapped out for another chair at our table because it was extremely lumpy and felt like I was sitting on a small ball. However ALL of that completely left our minds as we were brought our selections of brunch.....the Duck Hash and the Croque Madame. With every bite we were further in heaven, this is a great example of "foodgasm". I didn't think I would finish my entrée, but I did and that speaks volumes with me. Our server and the staff were all very friendly and made us feel at home, I will definitely be going back.....as a matter fact I dream about going back! I will most likely go sit at the bar next time around (as that is usually my seating of choice) but regardless, if you are looking for a great brunch spot in Cornwall-on-the-Hudson look no further. I can't attest to the rest of the menu (which I would consider New American) but if it is anywhere close to being as good as what I had for brunch that day it comes highly recommended by me. read more

Nestled in the lovely town of Cornwall-on-Hudson, Painter's is an inn and restaurant that offers high quality with a small town feel. Our one-night stay to visit a friend was a highlight of our east coast meandering road trip. There are only a handful of rooms above the restaurant that can be booked for over night stay. We enjoyed the extremely roomy suite with a queen bed. It was impeccably clean, quiet, and absolutely charming. This is not like a regular hotel with 24-hour front desk service. You check in at the restaurant hostess stand and are given a front door key to let yourself in or out when the restaurant closes. But this is the fun of Painters and I loved it. We sat in the cozy little sitting area at the top of the stairs and enjoyed listening to the hustle and bustle of the restaurant. We made our was downstairs for drinks and dinner. How awesome that we could go right to our room above for anything we needed. The kids in our group loved that they didn't have to sit with the adults bored by the conversation! The bartenders are experts and we enjoyed delicious, strong cocktails. And the food? Excellent! The potato skins had a nice little crisp to them and the calamari were full of flavor. I thoroughly enjoyed the fresh, tasty Caesar Salad topped with a perfectly grilled filet of salmon. We tried a tuna special which was very good. We weren't big fans of the chicken Parmesan, though... The sundried tomato was a bit overpowering for the dish. Overall, the beautiful and creative decor was so inviting and the staff are friendly and accommodating. There is a fabulous private room and bar to the right that can be booked for private parties and events. When the dinner rush subsided, we soaked up the hushed quiet of the inn. I truly wished we could have extended our stay to explore more of the town. Alas, we'll just have to plan another trip! And I can't wait to visit Painters again. Two thumbs way up! read more

Went here for a work function and we were dining off a fixed menu of various sandwiches. Me being a carnivore there wasn't much option for me since everything was pre-made and slathered with veggies. I ended up eating a few grilled chicken sandwiches that were prepared on a really tasty baguette type bread with bacon and ranch. Decent beer selection, they had half a dozen or so good micro's \ imports on tap. I went with a Franziskaner Hefe-Weiss which was served in an authentic Hefe glass (nice touch) I'd probably come back and give this place another shot. Painter's is a great little find in the quiet town of Cornwall on Hudson (not to be confused with Cornwall about 1 mile down the road). It's got a small inn combined with a great restaurant in this quaint town near West Point. Check out their website at http://www.painters-restaurant.com/ When you walk in, you'll see a dining are to your left, a bar area (for private parties) to your right, and the main bar and another dining area straight ahead, past the staircase. Sit at the bar - have a drink... The drink selections at Painter's are nothing short of impressive for a rather small establishment. Lots of beer on tap, and the wine and hard liquor selection can be daunting at times. Ask the bartender for a suggestion - he or she will be happy to oblige. When it's time to eat, the food selection is quite good, and I've yet to have a meal that I (or anyone else I was with) did not enjoy. Breakfasts are particularly good, too, on Saturday or Sunday. Between 10:30 and 3:00 you'll get a complimentary glass of champagne or mimosa, too! All kinds of people frequent the place - as Andrea D. said, Hell's Angels next to frat boys. There are bikers who like to head of for a good meal on a weekend (I am one of them, though my BMW bike is a little different than a Hell's Angel type), and they find Painter's. West Point cadet family members, other visitors, and just regular folks who want a good meal and good atmosphere. If you plan to stay at the Inn, make reservations well in advance. The place fills up fast, particularly when events are occurring at West Point. I have it on good authority (though not my own) that the rooms are quite nice. read more

Consistently a great place to go. Whether you're looking for some funky food, or a great drink Painter's will have it. The bar is one of the best around, having a very nice selection of beer and various liquors many places don't have. They rotate their tap beers regularly so chances are you'll be able to try something new every time you visit. The food is quite good. Generally I'll order the same things, steak sandwich, nachos or some pizza. All are very good and I've tried most of the other items on the menu, also equally tasty. Great calamari! My husband and I stopped to have lunch here today. I can't really speak to the inside of the place because I didn't see it. We stepped in, the hostess asked where we wanted to sit, we chose outside and out we went. The staff was nice. I had the turkey and swiss panini and thought it was pretty good. The panini bread was crispy and thin. Pretty good. I feel that the cole slaw could have been more flavorful, but I'm not complaining. Most sandwiches come with potato chips, not fries. We went for the champagne brunch. We got the eggs benedict and the tofu scramble. The tofu scramble doesn't come with eggs (it is marked as Vegan on the menu!) but was quite delicious, it had a different flavor than I was expecting, a bit on the sweeter side and the vegetables and tofu were tender and seemed fresh. The eggs benedict were quite delicious, not extraordinary, but quite delicious with some nice and tender ham, well poached eggs, and some delicious hollandaise sauce. I would certainly pick that again. Both sides were the painter's potatoes and were probably some of the best breakfast potatoes I have ever had: crispy on the outside and mushy on the inside. The menu did have some good other choices with some seasonal takes on pancakes and stuffed french toast as well as a few other slightly spun breakfast staples. The Service was good and friendly, which has definitely suffered from a lack of attentiveness in the past. The coffee was nothing to write home about, but was light and drinkable. The meal also comes with a mimosa or one of a few other typical breakfast beverages that I forget. The mimosas were a delightful compliment to the breakfast. Despite being fall and a bit chilly, the front patio was open and has a great view of the [sleepy] action that is happening on the main street through town. It'd be great if Painter's could personalize their menu even further and give it a more unique touch, but I would definitely come again in the future. read more

Cold, cold night...wish we could've been closer to the fireplace. Quaint, but no one's here for the ambience. Service is pleasant if not always attentive but they do get busy. French onion soup came out with steaming hot cheese on top, but lukewarm soup underneath. Sent it back...they microwaved it and sent it back out! Still, tasty if not artful. The hangar steak was delicious, the spinach with garlic on the side ordinary but the truffled sweet potato fries delicious. The dragon bowl featured a lovely peanut sauce drowning terribly mushy soba noodles (they said they always come out mushy cuz they're not Italian - I don't think so!), but the dish was much better, if soupy, with linguine. Painters... an old standby where the food and service are a cut above. This is one of the few restaurants in Eastern Orange County that does not try to hide older, single diners when offering seating. And I have found that no one is ever rushing me (or my group) out the door - at least at lunch. Good food, good service in a restaurant with original art work on the walls. read more

After visiting storm king art center and walking around for hours, the bf and I were looking for an affordable, filling lunch and he chose painters. I was very satisfied with the philly cheesesteak I ordered, loved the fresh baguette they used. Sweet potato fries were quite good as well. The bf said his hamburger was delicious. The atmosphere of the place is super cool- in an old house with lots of unique artwork decorating the walls. We were not drinking, but the bar seemed to have a great selection too. read more

Really good eclectic menu in a rustic one of a kind setting. We love the bar room. We love the dining room, and we love to sit outside when the weather permits. We try to get here 4-5 x's a year for lunch and have never been disappointed in anything that we have had. From rustic flat bread type pizzas with unusual toppings to delectable fresh salad combinations to yummy sandwiches, you can't go wrong at Painter's. Check out the Sunday brunch too - great stuff! The help is warm, accommodating and casual. We go for brunch or lunch and stay for hours, very relaxing place. I can't say how dinner is, but I would expect it to be wonderful! How could it not be? A few years back my husband hosted a surprise birthday party here for me. The food was out of this world and plenty of it. The party room had it's own separate bar and was quite roomy. They staffed it with plenty of servers too. Who knew - they rented rooms upstairs and my husband rented one for us to stay over there after the party. My friends and I went to brunch at Painters on 3/19. This was our first time at the restaurant. The food was plentiful, but not very good. I ordered corn beef hash and poached eggs. Holy moly, I don't know where to start. We came here on friends recommendations. Let's go for first impressions. Have you ever walked into an older persons home, maybe one that hasn't been touched in a while and get the taste of dust in your mouth, a staleness. That's what I got here. Don't get me wrong, I like old architecture, but this feels like that old "set it and forget it" infomercial. They walked in 20 something years ago, opened for business and haven't changed anything. We went with friends who are very "artsy" and they kept mentioning the great art on the walls and the sculptures. I like art and I like beautiful things, but if the Mona Lisa was on the wall it would not have changed how horrible our meal was. I would go piece by piece, but here is the most important part. My wife ordered a fish special that was so clearly spoiled a fisherman would have used it for bait. I had to force her to stop eating it (she won't ever return food). Our server was obnoxious and useless. When she came by to ask how things are and I point to the steaming heap of decayed fish and explain how bad it is, she seemingly could care less. Let's not forget that this place is not cheap at all. There is no value here that would some how over rule the poor quality. Thank God our cocktails were good. read more

Not impressed by this place! I came here for a company Christmas Party and ordered a chicken parmigiana expecting to get noodles with fried chicken, cheese and spaghetti sauce. Instead I got some grilled chicken, penne pasta noodles and what seemed to be a vodka sauce. It was far from a chicken parmigiana! I ordered a staple - fried fish meal for my family back at home (since we just moved to the area and that dish was overdone and less than enjoyable for her once I got it home! I'm so sad to say this was a disappointing brunch. We have come to painters before and loved the brunch, the environment, and everything was so flavorful. Unfortunately this trip we were the only diners and had the joy of listening to a staff argument get rather loud and aggressive making us feel incredibly uncomfortable. Additionally, the food tasted old and was poorly seasoned. Our children would barely touch their pancakes which tasted strongly of too much rising agent and nothing else. Ah, well. Yes, I'm an outsider, and I spent five hours hiking to work up an appetite. Also, my general expectations about the area were raised by a recent visit to the Peekskill Brewery -- across the river and a bit south -- so I'm not judging in a vacuum. I also ignored my instincts when I saw a very long, meandering menu, featuring American favorites with a few random Thai dishes. Hmmmm... The decor is an interesting mishmash of former grandeur and modern comfort -- old floral carpet/chandelier/leather upholstered chairs, meet mauve ceiling/lacquered (plastic?) forest green table/local paintings. After being sat at an awkward little table next to the hallway and bus station, we asked our server if we could change. She nicely said yes, and we went over to the wall. Another server came and took our drink order. A few minutes later, the hostess came out and bruskly asked, "Did you guys change your seat?" To which we answered nicely yes, we asked our waitress and this is where she put us. The hostess got a bit nicer and said that that table was reserved, and we shouldn't have been moved there. Ok. So we switched again. Our beers came. We ordered food. Another server came by with not our food, which is understandable because we moved. Yet another server came with our appetizers. Later, another server came with our entrees, not knowing which of us ordered what, which isn't a big deal, but you think they'd tell him before sending him over with the food. All were courteous but looked rushed and harried -- it was early on a Friday evening, and while it was busy, not every table was full, and I have to assume most Fridays are a busy time (ie: rush to be expected and handled). We found the food disappointing. The salad was ok, though heavy on romaine hearts, and bore the distinct chill of having been plated, perhaps hours ago, and left waiting in the fridge for dinner. Matt went out on a limb and got the shrimp and scallop pad thai, which was kind of hilarious: spaghetti dripping in a sweet brownish-purplish liquid, with rubbery shrimp but nicely cooked scallops. He ordered a half portion, which was oddly the same size as my full portion of one of the specials, the pumpkin risotto. Alright, I'm not a big snob, but if you're going to make a special separate menu of "specials," and charge city prices for them ($16), I expect you to make actual risotto. This rice was cooked entirely ahead of time, then mixed with some pumpkin and white wine. The garnishes (arugula, goat cheese, and "candied" nuts) were nice but didn't accomplish their mission of hiding the lame non-risotto. Sad face. Our actual waiter made an appearance and asked what we thought. Matt told him, nicely, the truth, and he was like, "oh, ok, sorry," and moved on. I think he asked if we wanted anything else, but didn't offer any comps or way to improve the situation. So we paid our overpriced bill, and headed over to the Peekskill Brewery and got some actual good food. read more

Sesame crusted tuna appetizer, sounded good on paper - tuna prepared perfectly, if bland, beautifully pink inside, a puddle of tasteless raspberry sauce on the side, no connection to the tuna, no kick, no nothing, on the side almost gone preprepared seaweed salad, bland again, not very fresh anymore, no kick, no nothing, bland again. Then calamari avocado salad, sounded good on paper - salad mix from a bag, couldn't find the dressing, two fist size avocado chunks somewhere in there, then a pile of breaded, unseasoned and fried calamari rings - no kick, bland, blah, fried, terrible, no connection between the elements. This is place is just fine. Its a typical small town restaurant that does the basics well. Well. But not great. And not as well as the prices would suggest. A lot of the reviews seem to indicate a recent down turn in quality, and they seem to be right. Its not a bad place. I would almost come back. Almost. I stayed over night at the inn - again, nice enough. But not actually....really more than acceptable. Clean yes. Cheap, certainly? Don't mistake that for affordable. All that would have been fine - and gotten them another star. EXCEPT for the staff. Our waitress was fine. Slow as molasses and clearly had too much to handle. The hostess was sort of hapless. She also handles reservations for the inn - and by handle I mean drops the ball. Unable to both handle dinner service and booking rooms. And really the worst, the WORST was the owner. Curly haired, intense, would be artist type. You will know him when you see him. He is a dick. I had just stayed over night ($150), had a big brunch with friends ($120), and then while I was by the front using the area by the pay phone to make a cell call, he PUSHED me out of his way. Put hands on me and shoved me to the side. Really a shame that his mediocre place had to be driven down a peg by his clear mismanagement; Understaffing; over pricing; being a dick. Whatever painters was once, skip it. Go to Beacon. It may be full of hipsters now, even braving them for a good meal is better than this place. read more

Painters never disappoints! I've been 5 times now and tonight ventured off the always delicious specials menu and ordered chicken parm; one of their staples. I anticipated the usual breaded chicken but theirs actually comes as a pasta dish...order it, its's amazing!! Creamy pasta magic. If you're looking for a new spot painters is worth your time. They have reasonably priced wine list, seriously tasty warm goat cheese salad (no skimping here...comes with oranges, almonds, olives, onion and a generous goat cheese portion), always good stuff on the special menu and fantastic friendly staff. We happily trek the 30min to this spot. Great for summer as well since they have a large outdoor space. read more

We eat there at least once a month. Great food. Great service. Laid back atmosphere. They offer "splits" on most of the stuff on the menu, so it's great for ordering tons of food and sharing.
