I hesitate to write this review, because I love this place so much, and I want to keep it for myself. Nevertheless, it deserves to be talked about. Despite its very Italian name, Paisano's is about as authentically Mexican and Guatemalan as you're gonna get. When I first started coming here, I found a couple of things I really loved, and I would order them every time. I have since started trying to brach out a little more, and I have not been disappointed. Everything on the menu is great (although, I have not been bold enough to try the cow foot soup yet). Even the burgers, which I realize have their roots north of the border, are good. The way I describe the food to friends, is that it always tastes like it was cooked in someone's kitchen, and not in a restaurant. Dinner for two with a couple of drinks usually runs between $40-$50. Apart from the food, the atmosphere is also worth mentioning. This place is old-school family run. Many of the employees are related, and this detail gives the place a really appealing and welcoming feel, especially when you notice that the staff seem to actually enjoy being at work. The friendliness of everyone from the waitstaff to the owner, is infectious, and it really does have an effect on the customers, especially the regulars, who treat it like a second home. It's not unusual to walk in on someone's anniversay party, quinceanera, or some other family gathering. I find myself coming back here pretty regularly myself, just because it's such a pleasant place to sit and have a beer. They offer ample outdoor seating which is nice in the summer, and there's karaoke in the bar pretty much every week. Oddly enough, for a Central American place, they even do a pretty great St Patrick's Day party, complete with a very well appointed Irish dinner. The parking lot is teeny, but you can always find a spot on High Street, or on the side street around the corner. I just came back from Paisano. My three girls and I shared 2 pitchers of the house margarita. $10 a person. I'm not quite coherent enough to write this review to the best of my abilities. They brought my wet burrito dry. I asked about it and they promptly fixed it without giving me a hard time. Slightly cheaper and more flavorful than Margaritas on Moody, where we usually go. Cheaper/stronger drinks as well. Fewer vegetarian options, but more desert options. Chips and salsa WAY better than the competition's. 2.99 just to add guac to our nachos. Me and my fiance had been meaning to try this place forever since it is right down the street and finally made it there! One huge plus is there is outdoor seating and I cannot wait to go back on a nice day for lunch. We were seated very promptly and given chips and salsa right away to munch on. We both enjoyed our dishes very much and there was plenty of food! Its nice cause there are options for those who aren't huge on Mexican or are trying to eat healthy (like me). The wait for food was reasonable. The server could have checked in more often, however, I totally understand because it was very busy. I will be going back for sure. I will say some of the appetizer dishes were high priced, but it seemed like it may have been fair for what you are getting (however I am unsure as we did not order any). read more

I like to support local, small business so I will try places that are a little off the radar. Sadly, this place did not meet my expectations. We were 8 people and mostly made up of kids and the waitress could not have been nicer and attentive. Also, mariachi band ... yes, please play for us. On the positive side, I think this place is totally worth a stop in for a tasty margarita and some homemade guac and yummy chips. Sadly, we ordered so much that was not good. We got a lot of apps like chicken fingers and wings (hello kids) and they were ok. The pupusas (and we got all kinds they had) was a total miss ... it even got a big thumbs down from the kids who like this kind of thing. For the adults, I got the chicken fajitas and my friend got the chicken enchilada. She returned hers and did not order anything else. Mine was dry and overcooked and the marinade did not work -- I added the salsa and sour cream to see if that would help, but nope. They were very sweet there so I might go back and get another delicious margarita and maybe try something else from the app menu. read more

Two words: BEEF SOUP. Wow! That was the tastiest concoction of fall-off-the-bone beef and vegetables I ever did try. The bowl was humongous--definitely big enough to share between two people--but you might not want to once you take a taste of it. The ambiance is a bit lacking, but I think it's less about how the restaurant looks, and more about how the restaurant's food tastes here. Apparently, on weekend nights, they move the seats and tables in the back to open up space for dancing. I think I'll need some cerveza before that happens, but at least I know the possibility exists! I also tried their original quesadillas with shredded chicken, which was awesome, and went well with the tomato salsa that came with our tortilla chips (complimentary!), but the star of the entire meal was definitely the soup. read more

Went with a group of 4 deep into the heart of Watertown. Which actually ended up being Waltham. Who knew? Anyway, we were seated quickly and noticed the very pleasant aroma of cinnamon, sugar, and fried dough. Ahhh Mexican food. Started off with Sangria (the waitress suggested over margarita) and were happy. Very sweet but also not weak. And had a bunch of fruit floating in it, which is mandatory. I always ask first. While enjoying the drinks we enjoyed copious fresh chips and some tasty salsa. We were all hungry, so we ate about 1000 calories of chips and salsa before the meal came, but that's what happens in a Mexican place. So we enjoyed in a gordo-like style. (gordo means fat, right?) Meals were parrillada something and enchiladas especialle. We shared. Food was great. The entire meal was great and the service was good too. Great dining experience! My bias: I work in a southwestern restaurant with a very large tequila selection and very high standards. Despite my bias, the food at this restaurant was amazing. I got these cheese enchiladas with a chipotle cream sauce and they were delectable. However, the margaritas are not as good as advertised, although perhaps they would be if you requested a certain tequila. I ordered the house one and it was premixed, which I didn't like to begin with. It was not very tasty, but keeping my bias in mind I ordered food anyway and I was blown away. It tasted so authentic. In addition, I felt the staff were very nice. I do not speak fluent Spanish, but I know a few words. This was well-appreciated. This is so close to my apartment, I will definitely be back again, but not for drinks. read more

Good food, great house margaritas, great food value; but poor ambiance, loud noise level, and some side blunders. Friday happy hour at Paisano: bar filled with loud, drunk laborers. Classic rock music was appreciated, as was the quickly served house marg served on the rocks with small lime slice ($8). Paisano doesn't take reservations on Fridays (or Sat) but we had no problem getting a table for seven in the dining area. A thin divider separating us from the bar did little to dull the noise, but we managed to converse. Far worse were the screaming babies. One family was considerate and removed crying child, but the second one just let their kid scream and scream, apparently ignoring child a habit for them. Otherwise the place was not at all full. We ordered tacos, burritos, and chimichangas. Burritos were barely above room temperature (we sent back). Only one dish was at all warm; which says that the cook has a hard time planning/ multitasking. (They should just serve things when ready if the kitchen cannot handle large parties.) All dishes were made to order and tasty, but lacking in any real spice heat. Had to use ample hot sauce to get any kick. Refried beans WAY too salty, almost inedible. GUACAMOLE HAS SOUR CREAM MIXED IN --A BIG MISTAKE. Chips and salsa were nothing special. Servers were very pleasant, and wait times were very acceptable. Limited lot parking but plenty of street parking. Three of five stars. read more

I've gone to this restaurant about 5 times now and each time it was a great experience. It has become my semi regular dinner spot on Mondays before I head to The Skellig for pub trivia. The margarita is cheap ($5) and actually a great drink. I assumed I would get a watered down mess. It is most likely just margarita mix as it tasted store bought and tequila, but enough tequila to make it decent. I've been with different parties and we mainly stick with the basics (Tacos dorads, burritos, & enchiladas) but I've enjoyed everything that I've tried. And the chips and salsa are bottomless and better than most places around. The first time service was really slow even though there were only two other tables in the restaurant part and maybe 3 people at the bar. This has improved since then. Drinks were brought out quickly and orders even for picky eaters came out correctly. This is a great place to go for a more home cooked version of Mexican food that you would normally find in and around Boston. Zocalo in Brighton is still my favorite, but Paisanos is a close second. read more

Great authentic Mexican and Guatemalan food. Bar is recently renovated and great place to catch a game especially Soccer. We love the Pollo Asado or Churrasco on the Guatemalan menu, had Sopo del Res today and was amazing. Homemade chips and salsa served for a free app. Staff here are great, always accommodating. This was a delicious restaurant! The portions were generous, enough to share. Our server was helpful in suggesting a plate made of side dishes to accomodate one of our party who had special dietary needs. (and it was less expensive) The spicy shrimp dish was a hit, as well as the adobo pork plate, the sweet plantains as a side were plentiful for all to try, delish! We ordered mostly from the Latin American menu, though one of pur group of 5 had pollo asado which she enjoyed. If yo like spicy, ask for the hotter salsa, Habanero, we thought, a definite standout! UPDATE: Because my husband is in customer service, he went to the restaurant today to speak with the owner. The owner was very surprised to hear what happened and VERY apologetic. He assured my husband he would discuss with Jennifer and offered my husband a comped meal. My husbamd was satisified with the response amd we will continue to order from here provided this does not occur. If all of his staff followed the owners lead, service wouldnt be an issue. We hope they do moving forward. Initial review: Because the food is good and we moved back into their delivery area, we thought we would give them another try. This time, they only brought a part of my husband's order. When he called to ask them to bring the rest of he was told no and the next time we ordered they would give that portion of his order for free which made no sense because it wasn't a separate dish, it was part of what you get when you ordered the dish. He said that wasn't acceptable and after more back and forth, Jennifer, who said she was the manager, hung up on him after he asked if the owner was there. He called back and asked if she had hung up on him because he was surprised that someone in customer service would do so. She said she did and he said, that's all I need to know, I am taking this up with the owner tomorrow, said goodbye and hung up. They might have good service at the restaurant but management has now twice been very dismissive and rude. read more

Wow - talk about a pleasant surprise! Expectations were low when we ended up here on Cinco de Mayo, post-work. After a short wait, we squeezed our party of 6 into a booth with 2 chairs on the end - thanks to the staff for letting us do that. Mariachi band was a little intrusive and loud but excused as it was Cinco de Mayo.....and I believe they wrapped it up shortly after coming to our table so they must've been booked for just an hour or so. Service was friendly, if a little scattered with our revolving drink orders. A large party was seated in an adjacent area so we could see the server had her work cut out for her. Shared nachos were tasty, friends' tacos looked fresh and my chimichanga was the best I've had. Ingredients tasted truly fresh and homemade - nothing canned or old here. Cheap top-shelf margaritas and Mexican beers are just what the medico ordered! read more

Authentic Mexican and Guatemalan cuisine. No lie. Also, delicious mojitos and margaritas. A friend and I were craving tacos and tequila and he heard about this spot from a co-worker, so naturally, we went right away. To start we got carne y camarones (beef and shrimp) with peppers, onions and my personal favorite, cilantro. For lunch I got the Tacos Dorados. They were also pretty decent, the corn tortillas were crispy and the lettuce, tomatoes and avocado were all extremely fresh, my only complaint was that the chicken was dry. He got the Bistec a la Mexicana, your choice of beef, chicken or shrimp in a delicious jalapeno tomatoe sauce, served with warm corn tortillas. All and all, it was pretty great lunch and I will certainly be heading back to try more of thier guatemalan dishes. read more

I only come here when the weather is good, because it's one of the few places in Waltham to have an alfresco meal. The patio is great (& has an outdoor ATM ... convenient), and once (I think it was Mother's Day?) we had a mariachi band!!! The food is good: tongue tacos & chicharrones! Delish. Very good, very fresh guacamole. I drink south american beer when I'm there, so I can't comment on the margaritas. LOVE PAISANO. I have been coming to this place for a few years and I just think it's great. I've spent some time in Guatemala and my family is from South America, so I'm always looking for good latin fare. My favorite thing here is the pupusa. I usually get 2 pupusas and an order of platano maduros. for $8.00, I am stuffed. Margaritas are good and inexpensive. if you come on a friday night (i think), there is a live mariachi band. awesome. Service can be a bit slow, but it's just what i've come to expect at a small mexican restaurant. you go there to have a good time with friends and eat good food. don't be disappointed that you need to spend an extra 15 minutes waiting. it's well worth it. read more

We used to love Paisanos. Unfortunately, the service on our last two visits was terrible. This evening, after being ignored for 10 minutes or more I stopped the bar tender to get drink refills. I was given a dirty look in return. Then, our dinner order hadn't come out even after the people next to us who ordered after us, were completely done with dinner and paid. My favorite restaurant to eat Shrimp Tacos!! They make them just how I love them. The staff is friendly and helpful. The best part of the tacos is their home make Hot Sauce!! It's all about the Hot Sauce, that's what separates Paisano from the rest of the restaurant that use commercial bottled hot sauce. Wait time is about 20 minutes to be seated. Once you're seated you get a disgruntled waiter and it takes that waiter 30 minutes again to bring out you're food . If you have a problem with you're food the waiter will scoff at you and start arguing with you that there's nothing wrong with the food. I've ordered takeout from Paisano's twice now, and I've added it into my regular repertoire of dinner options. Generally when I go for Mexican it's a burrito-centric spot like Anna's Taqueria, but I found Paisano's because I was looking for something a little different. I've had two of their Mexican plates - the enchiladas with red sauce, and the fajitas de res (steak). I enjoyed the latter more but both were satisfactory. The portion sizes are good, I was stuffed both times. I also got the tostadas with refried beans each time which are quite tasty. In the future I plan on trying their burritos just for comparison with the more well known burrito joints. All in all, if you're looking for a variety of traditional Mexican options, Paisano is definitely worth a try. read more

I love Paisanos. We eat there at least probably once a week. It's nothing fancy, but the food is great. Ceviche is awesome, Chicarones, Buritos, and any of the plates with steak or chicken. I've eaten at Paisano's several times and every time, I have had a delicious meal. They give you free chips and salsa when you get to the table. I love the chips because they aren't salty like other places. The drinks are good, have had the margaritas, beer, and pina colada . We've been before co-vid and they were able to accommodate a large group (12+) . We just went last night and we sat outside. There are plenty of tables spaced apart so it felt comfortable. Waitress was attentive and wearing a mask. Great food and good service . The owner was around making sure everything went smoothly. He is very pleasant to talk to . A friend recommended this place so we gave it a shot. Boy did it suck. First, we asked if the kids quesadillas were enough for my 2 kids to share and the waitress told us they were tiny, so we ordered 1 each. Of course, she proceeded to deliver 2 abundant kids plates of quesadillas that an adult would have a hard time choking down, never mind a kid. Next, our food (tacos) were just OK. Nothing to write home about, at all. The guacamole wasn't even seasoned (a little salt and some lime, not rocket science). What I really found obnoxious was the nervy 18% tip already included "for our convenience" on the bill. For a party of 4? This just smacks of "hope they aren't paying attention and tip twice." Shady. Enough negativity, for GOOD Mexican food there are only 2 places in Waltham: Taqueria Mexico and Taqueria El Amigo. The latter having the superior food, but zero ambiance if you are eating there and not doing takeout. The thing that sets these 2 apart from the likes of Paisano are the fresh ingredients and the salsas. And by salsas, I mean those in addition to pico de gallo. read more

Paisano serves both mexican and guatemalan dishes. i am a little unclear as to what the "traditional guatemalan salad" is-- i have eaten enchiladas here, as well as the pupusa appetizer (sort of like a mini quesadilla, but done guatemalan style) which were both delicious! i'm giving it only 4 stars because the last time i was there we got one dish right away and the other about 10 minutes later with no explanation. but i will return! i suggest the enchiladas-- large portion and very tasty! read more

Discovered this place this past week and boy what a find! Small place which was great. Very friendly and attentive staff. Great margaritas, I opted for the strawberry and my boyfriend went with the regular one. Delicious salsa and chips - and they offered refills since we were so hungry when we arrived.
