I was recently in search of authentic "old school Hawaii" saimin, and I think Palace Saimin pretty much nails it. Palace is truly a saimin stand through and through, with nothing else on the menu but that (in several essential noodle variations including saimin, wonton and udon), along with the requisite Teri' Beef BBQ Stick to go along with it, and that's it. Don't look for burgers, sandwiches, plate lunches, shave ice or other snacks here at Palace, 'cause they ain't doin' that. Being there's so many authentic Japanese Ramen shops around Honolulu nowadays, it's easy for the younger generation to become "Ramen Snobs", but you must keep in mind that Saimin and Ramen are almost entirely different animals, so you you can't really compare them, as difficult as that may be (I'm kinda' a Japanese "Ramen snob" myself). The saimin broth here is said to be made with shrimp shells and pork bones, where upon tasting it, there's just a subtle hint of shrimp, being balanced out by the also subtle, yet savory "meatyness" from the pork bones. This is certainly no dashi-based broth, having a much more unique "home-made" taste that's surely difficult to duplicate or pinpoint exactly what's in it. Seasoning-wise and overall flavor, the broth is perfect just the way it is straight out of the kitchen, where you don't need to add any Shoyu, unless you're a sodium junkie. If you do like to doctor your saimin, they also provide the usual salt 'n pep', Tobasco and Shichimi Togarashi condiments at each table. The saimin noodles are have that classic somewhat starchy taste and done on the soft side, and not "eggy" and firm like Japanese ramen noodles. The pork-filled Wontons are also cooked on the softer side, whereas I understand The Old Saimin House cooks theirs more firm. The pork filling tastes simply like ground pork and that's it, as I couldn't detect any other ingredients such as green onions and/or fish paste. The fat Udon noodles are somewhat firm and add an interesting texture contrast, but for flavor, I'd stick with the classic Saimin noodles. Oh by the way, Palace sources all their noodles from Eagle Noodle Factory (Gulick Avenue), unlike many other noodle shops around Honolulu who get theirs from Sun Noodle Factory. Like most old school saimin stands, Palace also provides a side dish of Coleman's mustard for you to add shoyu and use to dip your noodles, wontons and/or garnish into. Of course doing that makes your saimin meal taste you're eating at a Chinese restaurant. As for their (Teriyaki Beef) BBQ Stick, while it doesn't say it on the menu,you can request to have them "Koge", or burnt on the edges, a.k.a."Papa'a", just make sure you tell your server you want it that way. "Koge" is the key word. Remember that. You can tell they use a cheap cut of beef such as top round or chuck, yet for what it's worth, it works. It's not penetrated deeply with the Teriyaki marinade, but rather "shallow" if you will, which is actually how I prefer it, as I can still taste the flavor of the beef itself, with the Teriyaki flavor taking up the slack of the cheap beef cut in a subtle, yet effective way. Add to that the "puddle" of Teri' sauce that you can dip the stick in, which helps to add moisture and an extra punch of sweetened shoyu, and POW! Along with Palace excellent "Old School" Saimin" along with the BBQ Beef Stick? This my friends is as CLASSIC as a Hawaii Saimin stand gets!!!! read more

This place has been around for years, but I can't believe I'm only getting to the review now. I guess it's because this weekend was the first time I've been to Palace in over 20 years. Crazy right? It mostly has to do with the fact that the parking lot is small and the dining room is just as small so it's always crowded and whenever I pass by thinking to go there's a line outside. As luck would have it, after a HIFF movie I was nearby the area so I headed down and there was no line! So my Dad and I went to check it out since he hadn't been there since he was in his teens. So you can imagine how old this place is and the years of experience they have at perfecting a bowl of saimin. I'd go with the won ton min. The noodles are nice and tender and the size of the won ton, not huge, but still bigger than what you'd normally get at any other Saimin stand. To tie it off the broth is very tasty. There's a lot of depth in it. You have to wonder what they do or simmer to make such a light be flavorful broth. And of course you need to get the side order of the BBQ sticks right?! I'd recommend Palace over most other Saimin stands that are left. Actually it's probably one of my favorites for the old school Mom and Pop shops. Make sure you hit it. After reading the raving reviews and seeing this place when I drive by, I had to try it. Brought the family minus one kid and was able to find parking (first stall on the right). Hard to figure out which parking spaces are OK to park in....I thin there's only 5 stalls, 4 on the left except the first stall closest to the building and the one stall on the right facing the restaurant. We had 2 small simians, s small won ton miens, and 5 bbq sticks. In hind sight, I should have ordered a large won ton mein and a large saimin for my 4 years old (she can pound the noodles, I end up giving her half of mine plus her small one). The dash was as noted in other reviews. Tasty with the shrimp and salty alkaline flavor. Way, way better dashi than Zips, Janes Fountain, Tanaka, and Boulevard. The noodles were firm and crinkly, al dente at it's best. Simple toppings...char sui and green onions. Some simplicity is the best. The bbq sticks were good and tender not tough. It would have been better if the meet was more caramelized/charred with the sauce and if the sauce was a little thicker (to stick better on the meat). None the less, it was good. Wish they had yakitori chicken sticks like Hamura saimin on Kauai. I love that these truly local mom and pop stores are still around. I became intrigued by this place, ever since I went to the Old Saimin House restaurant. This place is another hole in the wall restaurant I have recently discovered and I am happy that I have discovered it. This place is really small. I can estimate about 21 people, although it may be smaller than that. You could sit on the floor to eat your saimin, but that would be a health hazard, to say the least. This restaurant is a throw back to 1950's Hawaii, when it was rebuilding after the war. Only problem with this place is the cash only policy. I only had a couple $$, so I had to use my iPhone to scout the nearest ATM machine location. I do admit that I love authentic and this place can do no wrong. This place is far from a 5 star dining, but you do get awesome value for the food that Palace sells. Simple yet elegant, which is great. The parking situation is very tight, so you might want to come early to secure a spot before entering this place. Also, this place does not have air conditioner at all. It was a hot day, and the sweltering heat made the saimin not as pleasant as I thought it would be. Service is swift, but not too swift. I ordered the large saimin with won ton mixed in. I must say that for the price and the bowl, it is better than Zippy's on a late night. The broth could have had more flavor, but the noodles are excellent. I wish they could have some hot sauce or something to kick up the flavor, since I didn't see them on the tables. Must've ran out or something. With that said, I recommend this place for its simplicity and value. Not many people can say they had authentic saimin at its best. In Kaneohe, almost everything closes by 9p, so it's nice to have an option (even one that's a bit of a drive) for a late night snack. The bbq stick was good, but priced a bit high for what you get. Definitely 3.5 to 4 stars. The parking is tight, with only a few spots in front and the rest is street parking. We parked on the other side of King St. which had signs hinting of a tow zone which stayed in the backs of our mind as we ate. Interior is decorated 60's high school cafeteria, with yellow walls and menu posted on a changeable letter board. The cashier register is actually in the kitchen doorway and they have seven picnic tables which doesn't seem to be enough given the steady flow of customers but the limited parking and tables seem to turn over just right so no one is ever waiting outside. After we ordered two large bowls of won ton min, we discovered why. The soup comes out wicked fast and piping hot with a side of hot mustard, very simply dressed in char siu and green onion. It's very cheap filling comfort food and obviously a lunch pick for surrounding business workers. I wouldn't consider it the best saimin in Oahu because Shiro's, while more expensive, isn't in that much better an area, isn't more convenient to get to, but has more parking, more comfortable seating, offer noodles cooked to your taste and gives you more control over what other vegetables or meats you'd like in your soup. I also think Shiro's has the edge on broth, more flavorful though just as salty as Palace. I noticed other reviewers weren't hyped about the service, but this tiny hole in the wall is obviously about the fast and the cheap. Regulars know the routine: when you're done, you go up and pay at the register. For such a cheap meal but still money for quality, I'd be hard-pressed to complain. Me in Kalihi? Only because my friend has been here before. ATMOSPHERE: The parking lot fits about 6 cars and smells like urine. The "restaurant" reminds me of eating in an old Hawaii home's wash house, complete with the lack of decor, mess, and smooth cement floors. The place seats about 12 comfortably, so we did have about a 20 minute wait. There is no climate control, the kitchen is right next to the dining area, and the breeze blows the heat and smoke from the grill into the dining room and out the front door. Yes it was hot and yes we came out smelling like we barbecued our own food. FOOD: Won Tun Saimin - I got the large size which is comparable to other places. The noodles were slightly overdone, there were about 5 or 6 won tun with pork filling, slices of char siu, and green onions. The clear broth tastes exactly like Zippy's saimin to me, which is a good thing, but it wasn't searing hot, just kind of hot, which was disappointing. Pricing was very good for the portion. Barbeque Stick - A single skewer with marinated teriyaki meat. I'm not a fan of teriyaki meat but this was really good. Very tasty (sweet & salty) and tender. SERVICE: It's first come, first served. If the inside is full, wait outside until a spot opens up then go right on in. There's a simple menu on the side walls and they come to you to place the order. Our male server was patient and friendly. This is a mom & pop kind of place so don't expect full-restaurant service. We found Palace Saimin on Yelp, looking for an authentic Saimin place in Honolulu. Very small place and lucky to get a parking space in their parking lot in front. Place is small with several tables, but we came early at 11:30am on a Tuesday and still had room. Staff was incredibly friendly, coming up to us and asking if this was our first time here. They're very used to new visitors due to their great Yelp reviews. She explained all the menu items, and besides the saimin, wonton min, and udon, the BBQ sticks were also very popular so we got a couple of those. A littlle pricey for each stick, but very tasty and worth it! As we took pictures of our bows and ourselves, she came up to us and offered to take a family photo for us, so great proactive service the whole time we were there! Just a suggestion. Please go back to using a better cut of meat for your bar b q sticks so it's easier to eat. For awhile, you used better meat. I'm sure it wasn't flank steak which is costly, however, there's better cuts that's are still cheaper instead of whatever cut you are currently using. If gotta charge more, do it. Super old school saimin stand. You can practically count the number of menu items on one hand. There is absolutely nothing fancy about this place, a regular eat-and-go! Parking is a bit tight but people don't tend to linger inside. I got a medium saimin for $4.50 and a BBQ stick for about $2, it doesn't get much cheaper than that. A toal hole-in-the wall joint that serves inexpensive saimin, won ton mein and best of all BBQ sticks. All 3 of us ordered the won ton mein. Palace saimin! Where have you been all my life!! For someone who has lived on island their entire life, I can't believe I've never tried Palace Saimin until today! I loved it! Home made won tons just as good as my moms won tons, simple menu, reasonable prices and an old saimin stand feel. I got the large combination won ton min which consists of udon and ramen noodles and a beef bbq stick. So Ono!! My only complaint is the parking lot is tiny! And one stall is reserved for another business. The lot fits about 4-5 cars only and I saw a lot of tow trucks in the area around 6:30 pm on a Thursday night. This is truly a hole in the wall cafe. It's small, run down in a sketchy neighborhood. We had to try it. The soda machine is in the corner and there are some bench seating tables. The beef stick was the best! I did not like the Saimin and wonton though. To me, it lacked a lot of flavor and even adding soy sauce, it was still bland. I know I might get blasted for this. Seeing how popular this place is and that it's highly rated. But I feel like if anyone gives a high rating here...then they might've not eaten at Shige's Saimin stand in Wahiawa or 49ers in Aiea or even at a Shiro's. My wife and I ate here after a concert late at night and it was one of the only places open. Plus it has 4 1/2 stars! Yelp has NEVER let us down. It was packed as expected. Parking was hard to find. After finally getting in and ordering...I was disappointed. While decent...the soup was bland. You have to put an above average amount of soy sauce, black pepper, and salt to have flavor. The noodles are a little bit on the harder side for me. Like it was pulled out of the boiling water too early. The beef stick is cooked well and the sauce is delicious. The only challenge is the sauce is too watery so it's easy for the beef to become too dry unless you dip it in the sauce for a while. After that...there's not much else options. Today, I brought my family simply because we wanted to eat something light right before their gymnastics practice. There was a much smaller crowd this time. Hoping this time would be better...it wasn't. And we really wanted to like this place! The ladies are so nice and helpful. One of the ladies found a quarter while cleaning and gave it to my son. The prices are really reasonable! Simple menu and clean location. But the food....look at it this way. Other than myself...no one else finished their bowl of Saimin. The noodles were cooked perfectly to have a firm texture and the char siu and green onions perfectly complemented the noodles. I took a friend from Japan here so he could experience the divergence of Japanese ramen and Hawaii Japanese saimin. He enjoyed eating something with a Japanese flavor profile that was not Japanese. I had the Saimin/Udon wonton combo, was really yum but the yakitori chicken was less then desirable, little on the dry side with a sauce that seemed to be poured directly from the soy sauce jar. This restaurant is quite small so depending on the time that you come, there might be queues. When I arrived, there was a queue formed outside but it was a brief wait as came at 21:30 on a Saturday. There is a steady stream of customers coming and leaving despite it's being opened late past dinner time. I ordered Saidon which is a combination of Saimin and Udon. I asked one of the ladies there about the broth that they are serving, she said, "it's a combination of beef, shrimp and pork." I have to say the broth is good, very lean. Palace Saimin is the reason hole-in-the-walls are so flippin' amazing. It's a mom-and-pop restaurant with very limited seating. There are small tables and a few communal seats. The menu offers a handful of items (see pictures), but the most popular dishes are the won ton saimin (small $4.25/large $5.25) and bbq skewers ($2.25). Add a quarter if you order take-out. Palace Saimin will always be the best saimin place ever!!! The combination of no parking, no a/c, pour your own water, etc. just cannot be beat - it just makes the saimin and beef sticks taste better :) Their soup "dashi" cannot be duplicated - best tasting ever! So forget all of the other top ramen cup o' noodle shops and hit up the best. Just make sure you don't go there on Sunday or Monday and check the other day's hours prior to going - it's a great challenge... 5 Stars for you! read more
