    Tex-Mex Omelette

Cute diner with good service. Parking isn't the greatest but we were able to find a spot in the side parking lot. I ordered the Tex-Mex Omelette because it said it was a favorite on the menu. I was disappointed with it. It was lacking flavor and seemed like a bland jarred salsa was used with the chorizo inside. The potatoes were pretty good but the toast was dry and burnt in places. This place had good reviews and has been around forever so I was excited to try it but found it to be lackluster.

    Hotcakes $7.59 for two cakes.

This is a neighbourhood grub hub, that was recommended by so many people when we asked around, so we thought we'd try it out. The diner itself is super cute with pink and blue seats, pictures all over their walls, and I don't know if it's celebrities or patrons, but I thought it was a nice touch. The place is really clean, and warm. Our waitress was very pleasant, and we were very fortunate to have her help us with the menu, and answer other questions about the strip. The stars given on today's review was for both the service and the atmosphere of this place. The food is something I wasn't very impressed with. I ordered the meat and eggs, where you have a choice of toast, and meats to accompany your eggs and hash. Which I would have expected to be quite standard. However, I asked for crispy potatoes and really well don't bacon, of which I enjoyed the bacon, but the potatoes really taste more like potato salad then a hash, so if your into that it's the dish for you. It was crispy on the outside and quite salad-y on the inside, and I really dislike potato salad, but it seems to be something the locals really enjoy. Toast was under toasted. I also ordered the famous pancakes, and once I bit into it, I found them to be more of a flat, chewie pancake, and not flavourful at all. I was at least expecting some vanilla, but I got noffin. I smothered it with syrup and butter, but it just didn't do it for me. My dining partner really didn't have much to say about the sandwich either. I honestly don't see what the hype was about this place, but so many people were buzzing about it, so we had to try it, the food was mediocre at best. But the atmosphere and staff are both very nice, and made this experience a little more enjoyable.

So, so good. Crepe pancakes and bacon. Also had the hash. The best food I had when I was visiting Pitt.

After waiting one hour in the rain this is the table they gave us (see photo). Within minutes a served dropped some cups behind us and splashed on me. Then I asked for Splenda for my coffee but they don't have it. Service was slow. Food was average and cold. No one offered me a coffee refill. Over rated tourist trap. Plus no parking. Avoid at all costs.

Great place for breakfast. Good omelettes and pancakes. Waits are longer on weekends and Steeler home game days.

Very greasy, service was poor. Atmosphere needs work. I been to two of them and I doubt I'll ever go back.

I don't like the cash only means of payment. I also wish there was more variety on the menu, but the food is good.

A Pittsburgh institution. Simply the best diner breakfast in town. The pancakes are phenomenal and the coffee is strong. Need I say more.

The Speckled Egg provided the upscale and elevated breakfast, that was a nice contrast to the rustic and local breakfast we had the next day. Our waitress was friendly and professional. After some deliberation, I went with a bowl that included eggs, chicken sausage, sweet potatoes and a nice garnish of dill. The dill surprisingly elevated the whole dish. My wife enjoyed an omelette. Coffee was also quite good! Nice start to a day of sightseeing! (The restaurant staff gave great advice about the nearby tourist attractions)

He was courteous, well spoken and friendly. We sat there for about 10-12 minutes. No one approached the table. We looked over to what appeared to be a bar area and we saw two servers standing there talking and showing each other their phones. My wife said, "With our luck, one of those two is our server." Sure enough, when they were finally done talking, one came over to our table....no smile and a big audible sigh. She asked what we wanted to drink, we gave our order and she returned with our beverages. After another 10 minute wait she came back to take our order. When asked about a certain dish, came another big sigh, eye roll and and a rote description of said dish. The food arrived and one of the orders was wrong. Another wait to get her attention. We asked for the item to be redone as we had ordered it. And she even asked how we wanted it! You got it...another eye roll and a big sigh. At least she was well oxygenated! The dish came back with the very same results. On that issue we gave up. Then came the wait for the check. Once again the two servers were chatting, no heads turned to check on their tables. My son went over to get the check. When the check arrived, it was attitude city. She accused us of picking on her because she was only a server. It's obviously how she saw herself. We then asked for the manager who was quick to side with the server. She said that nothing seemed to satisfy us and that we had a problem. IN SHARP CONTRAST. I have been to the Speckled Egg on the South Side many times. From the Host/Hostess to the servers to the bus staff, everyone had a smile, chatted with their customers, laughed and it was always a great experience. The manager came over since he recognized me from being there many times and we chatted for a minute. We are talking Night and Day. Completely two different experiences from server to management styles. To me there is only one Speckled Egg and one complete waste of time (Downtown).

The cool vibe restaurant is tucked away up a short flight of stairs on Filbert Street. It gives the place a cozy, hideaway feel with brick walls and murals. It's pretty popular, so you might have to wait a few minutes for a table, but it moves pretty quick. The menu focuses heavily on crepes and French toast, and they do both very well. I went for a savory crepe that was loaded with eggs and topped with a rich sauce and diced vegetables. It came with a side of fresh fruit which was a nice touch. We also ordered a sweet crepe to share. It was beautifully presented with chocolate drizzle, berry sauce, and a massive pile of whipped cream. The coffee is solid too. But the star of the show for me is the Shakshouka. I have gotten it the last 2 times I went. You also have to try their Dirty Chai. My only critique is the hostess at the front. She appeared overwhelmed by her role and was not warm. We were actually told by the waiters that "she is serious about her list". Which would be great if she managed it effectively. When I brought concerns that we had been pushed down the list 3 times for other parties. She responded "well, how do you know that" to which I responded "we watched you take their names down after ours and sit them before us". Her response was to shoo me off and tell me to go find a table myself; to which I did. But what a poor way to manage your stress, responsibility, and consumers. On the bright side my waiter/waitress was awesome per usual.
