The taste was so there and the woman at the front desk desk was soooo pleasant! I am definitely going back soon! I only ordered pick-up, but from what I saw in the dining area, the place looked peaceful, neat, and clean. Again, I can't stress how good the food was. There is metered street parking but it fills up quickly so keep that in mind if you are looking to visit AND dine-in on your LUNCH break, otherwise, you can conveniently place your order online and pay in store. I like how they don't put too much rice and fill the roll with fish. 1 star docked because we asked for spicy mayo and did not receive any. So I have a Pandang problem. I'll admit it, I'm obsessed. I love this place! It's become a regular spot (like the hostess recognizes me). Anyway, I'm surprised to read some of the criticisms from other Yelpers, but I hear what they are saying. I think that is what happens when you offer more than one type of cuisine - one will outshine the other. It doesn't have the "best" Thai that I've ever had, but I think it's fine Thai food. (Plus, there isn't a nearby alternative, so I'm glad they are in South Orange Village to satisfy my Pad Thai cravings when I'm in the area.) What Pandang excels in is Japanese cuisine, particularly sushi and hibachi. The sushi dinner and hibachi dinners are great deals. The gyoza and beef negimaki are my recommended appetizers. I also love the Christmas Cake special roll and Crispy Duck special roll. Dine-in trumps take-out. It's worth spending the time to have your meal at the restaurant. Beautifully decorated with friendly staff, the spot is great for either a casual meal with a friend(s) or date night. So far since its opening, this restaurant has stayed on its game. Located in downtown South Orange and not to mention a 5 min drive away from Seton Hall University, Pandang provides a great choice for fans of sushi and Thai. Having just graduated from Seton Hall, I can say Pandang was one of my favorite spots to go to after class or to just spend quality time with friends. So what makes it great? THE FOOD Although the prices are very fair in the first place, the lunch special prices are awesome. From my experience so far, the sushi and Thai food that I have tasted have been spot on. The sushi quality is fresh and the special rolls menu is satisfactory. My personal favorite from the special roll menu is the Pizza roll. For the more ambitious tasters, The Iron Man roll is a must according to my peers. As for the Thai food, I tried the Pad See Yu and it was very flavorful. There is also a hibachi option on the menu for people that are fans of that, but personally haven't tried. Overall, my experience with the food I tasted was great. THE SERVICE The owner is a very nice lady who was very kind and courteous to my friends and I. I thought the customer service was exceptional and has definitely enhanced my experience at this establishment. I wouldn't say the ambiance is especially fancy or mind-boggling, but it definitely has a clean feel to the place. NOTES I will say that parking is fairly limited, but not a big deal. If you don't happen to find parking in front of the restaurant, I recommend parking at the train station. FINAL THOUGHTS If you are in the South Orange area, I highly recommend visiting Pandang. The food is enjoyable, the customer service is top notch, and the pricing is fair. And for Seton Hall students that read this, there is a 10% discount if you show your school ID and pay with cash. I have a new favorite routine where I go for a run on Tuesday, then order sushi, and go to class. It's a late one!! Looking forward to the sushi makes it all worthwhile, plus my professor is awesome. What I like about the rolls is that the fish is fresh and there is a very thin layer of rice so that you don't get gyped on fish like at some places. For some reason I'm not really a fan of their 'Spicy' rolls (i.e. Spicy Tuna, Spicy Salmon). They do not use the typical orange sauce. I'm not sure what they use, but it's a bit strange. Atmosphere in front room wasn't ideal, so if I returned I'd ask to be seated in the back. I don't know if it's any different but it'd be worth a shot. The food was quite good. Sushi rolls were huge portions and my friend enjoyed both of the orders she got. I got spring rolls which weren't the best I've had but they were good enough. The chicken with string bean entree was very flavorful. Interestingly, I get this regularly at various thai restaurants and I've never seen it with so many beans. I suppose personal preference would dictate if you think this is a good thing or a bad thing, but it was fine with me. I'm always a bit leery of pan-asian establishments due to my belief in "jack of all trades, master of none." Pandang so far does ok. Overhard the service staff talking in Chinese, which, if it reflects the management, would be funny given the food they are (and are not) serving. Even before hearing the staff talk, I knew the food wouldn't be authentic after sampling two Thai dishes. It is hard to describe but authentic Thai food has a precise flavor that is due to proper uses of spices, sauces, peanuts and cooking style. The taste of the Thai dishes were more akin to Chinese takeout (good takeout, but still takeout) with overtones of salty/soy sauce-like flavors rather than the mildly sweet, slow chili burn that should be characteristic of dishes like Pad Thai. But after my experience yesterday and finding a hair in my Spicy Basil Chicken entree , I cannot in good faith continue frequenting this establishment. I called today to request a refund for the singular item I found the hair in and was questioned unnecessarily by the manger on duty Evan. During the conversation he advised that he would need a photo of the hair in mind meal in order to process the refund for the entree item despite me not requesting a refund for my entire order. I advised that I would go into the trash to provide a photo although it was completely unnecessary as I am a Black woman with short curly blonde hair and the hair I found was a long straight piece of hair which would be in lime with the staff who prepared the meal. Evan stated "they require customers to provide photos as some customers lie for a refund". This comment was extremely offensive to me as I have ordered from this restaurant in several occasions and have never requested a refund or reported any issues with my order. Due to the unnecessary comment by Evan, I advised that I would instead go through my bank for the refund due to the attitude received and the resistance to proceed with the refund. Given that there is a current pandemic, I would expect restaurants to have better practices around grooming and insuring instances do not occur. And in the least take accountability for mishaps on their side. read more

This place has the best lunch deal. The sushi is the best quality I've ever run across in America and the portions are generous. Before I got pregnant I loved the tuna rolls and spicy salmon rolls. It's $8.50 for two generous rolls. Now that I can't eat raw fish I love the crispy oyster roll, and fried white fish roll. They often substitute smoked salmon for me without extra charge since they know I can't eat raw fish. I came here one late night for dinner. The waitress was very friendly. I ordered the shrimp tempura roll and my friend had the chicken teriyaki. I thought my sushi was very good and he liked the chicken a lot. Beware that if you order tea it comes warm, I like it like that but some do not. This time, my husband had the mango chicken, which was not very good. I ordered two sushi rolls that were chewy and inedible. I complained to the waitress that I could not eat the sushi and asked for just a plain bowl of rice so that I could have something in my stomach. To my surprise when the check came, they charged me for the rolls! The manager refused to remove it from the bill. Went last night for my son's birthday and had a so-so experience & it was quite up and down honestly. We arrive before 9 p.m. & were told they close at 10 and they certainly we're in a rush to get out of there. Our server was clearly new and made several rookie mistakes like forgetting to bring utensils, forgetting to refill our drinks, & forgetting to put in parts of our order but all of that is ok and can be overlooked. The food itself was quite tasty so from that aspect alone they earned high marks. They even brought out a free platter of fried oreos and whipped cream to mark my sons bday so that was nice. Parking is very tough, no street parking was left so we had to park down the block in a municipal lot. However the kicker for me was on the way out before we finished and even paid our bill they were mopping the floors already. Considering I had my elderly mother with me that spelled near disaster as she has trouble walking as it is never mind maneuvering through a wet floor. Tonight we enjoyed a Special Fantasy Roll as our first course that was so fresh and delicious (see pic I posted!). Always accompany our meals here with traditional favorful tea. Then we shares one of our favorites, Tom Kha Gai (Chicken Coconut Curry with Veggies) Soup with Rice Noodles! Omg, its a flavor explosion. And the generous portion is huge, plenty for 2. Once you start eating this you enter a twilight zone of flavor heaven. Not only will you dream about this dish, you will crave it. Everything so fresh, made to order, beautifully served by Lily or Danielle. Jenny is a lovely, welcoming host and manager who can advise you on your menu choices. It is also BYOB. So if you want to bring a nice bottle of red or white, feel free. Dinner at Pandang for us is a spiritual and fun experience every time we come here. And we always look forward to coming back. I got drunken noodles with tofu, the service was very quick and my waitress very nicely made sure that I knew that there was non- vegetarian sauce that came with the dish. Finally some decent Thai in South Orange/Maplewood.!! We ordered take out on Sunday with friends and choose all Thai dishes. Much to our surprise it was really very good. Good level of Spice, nice balance to the dishes. After trying Wild Ginger in Maplewood and Khun Thai in Millburn, this place is by far the best Thai we have had in our local area. I just had dinner here with my mother and my father, and I was skeptical at first. This place is very new and I'm always wary of being the first person to try a place, but I figured it was worth a shot. It definitely was. They have a mix of Thai and Japanese food. The selection isn't huge, but it's a small place so they have the perfect range of foods. The food was very good, and the service was awesome. Everyone was very nice, down to the sushi chefs. after spending a few late hours at the 'brew at the zoo' festival at turtle back zoo, we were in the mood for some serious eats. after a little yelping, we settled on pandang- thai seems like a good idea. it wasn't. we kept it simple and seemingly foolproof: chicken pad thai and beef drunken noodles. the pad thai was lukewarm, bland, and pretty greasy. it looked like it should've tasted better, but it didn't. I've never had such greasy, flavorless pad thai. pretty disappointing. I should've paid closer attention to previous reviews. the drunken noodles were the clear winner- they came out at the correct temperature, and packed a punch of heat in the flavor profile. I've had better, but this dish is definitely recommended over the pad thai. also had the spring rolls- they were pretty good. served way too hot though. and tried an eel cucumber roll- it was pretty much all cucumber. serious let-down. overall, meh. As a "poor" college student I have to say that Pandang is usually one of my go-to places to eat out with friends. I usually get the chicken pad thai but lately I will get the spicy coconut chicken soup. The service is very good and you never wait too long for your food! Pandang is solid. I'm a little surprised by the disparate reviews here, but I guess you can't please everyone. As a non-Asian American (read: white boy), perhaps I don't have the discerning palate of some diners or maybe it's just that I don't hold places like this to the same standard as others have. Whatever the case may be, though I'm often wary of Pan-Asian restaurants that serve a little bit of everything, I found Pandang to be quite enjoyable. It sounds like the sushi here is good, but we had Thai. Will have to try the sushi next time. Between us, we tried the tom yum soup, drunken noodles and pad Thai. The soup and drunken noodles were very good, full of flavor and pretty spicy (which I like). The pad Thai was fairly pedestrian but serviceable, though I'll admit, it's not really my thing. This may be a surprise since Pandang comes up as "Thai" on yelp and seems like only a Thai place when you walk past it, but there is a very extensive sushi menu. Every roll I have tried has been both a good size, highly fresh, and well crafted (not too much rice). Having tried the other sushi establishments in South Orange, there is really no comparison. I've tried the shrimp pad thai, which was solid. Also we've had the tom yum soup which had a nice mix of flavor and spice. The staff and owner are very friendly and nice. Pandang came at the recommendation of friends who told us that the Japanese food was decent and that it was casual making it good for family dining. I agree. The sushi and sashimi for 2 was very good. The staff was friendly and attentive. The restaurant clean. I usually stay away from restaurants that offer Japanese, Thai and Chinese for fear of "jack of all trades, master of none." While the sushi cannot compare with New York sushi restaurants, I put it above average for New Jersey. I will be back to try the Thai food too. read more
