Spoiled greens from a turkey sandwich

Spoiled greens on my sandwich today. The people there are nice enough but you can't serve a person rotten food.

A WHOLE grilled chicken Asian Salad.

I ordered an Asian Grilled Chicken salad. What I received was a few pieces of lettuce, 2 wonton strips and 2 SMALL pieces of chicken. A $16 salad. I'll never eat from here again

I did not care for but then again I'm not a Panera bread fan. I have tried numerous Panera's and I've always been let down. I just came to this one for lunch and I had a BLT. I had the same issues that I have every Panera I go to. And that issue is just that to me the food is on the bland side and doesn't really have much of a taste. I know that many will disagree with me on that and I guess I would say if you're a fan of Panera you'll probably like it here and if you don't like Panera you won't like it here. I find most of them to be very similar in the set up and in the food choices and the taste of the food. TruE to form, I really didn't like my sandwich. I found that the bread was very bland and the whole sandwich was sort of tasteless. I'm also really not a big fan of the atmosphere here. It's hard to find a seat, it's very noisy and I have to train numerous Panera's I've come to the conclusion that as a restaurant they're not for me.

Slow service. Tables not cleaned between patrons. Carpet in dining room needs to be vacuumed. Tea not being brewed in a timely manner.

Great in the morning. By evening, sticky and dirty floors and tables. Small portions and inconsistent.

I found Chestnut on Yelp and decided to wander in. The space has this elevated modern rustic vibe with a southern twist and a little bit of sass. They even sell shirts that say neither hoity nor toity, which cracked me up. Honestly, the atmosphere was great, but our waitress was the real star. She was absolutely phenomenal and looked after us perfectly. My palate was pretty fried, so I started with a Bloody Mary to wake up. Truth be told, it was just okay. The house mix had an odd flavor that nobody at the table could quite identify, and it seriously lacked spice. It was just kinda bland. I noticed a bottle of Firewalker hot sauce on the table, and splashing that in helped a little bit. After that, I transitioned to a mimosa. You really cannot mess up a mimosa too much, and it was a solid, reliable second drink. For the main event, I ordered the southern chicken and waffles. This came with a fried chicken breast sitting on golden malted waffles, smothered in sausage gravy, and drizzled with chipotle honey. It was a really great dish. The kitchen did a solid job with the fry on the chicken, and the gravy had a nice flavor. It leaned a little on the sweet side because of the honey, but it was not totally overdone. The real sleeper hit of the morning, though, was the side of cheesy grits. Those grits were absolute heaven. They were incredibly creamy and perfectly seasoned. If you go, you have to order them. Chestnut is in a great location, and despite the weak Bloody Mary, it was a stellar visit.

The best falafel (a daily Benedict special) and that's saying something given I've eaten falafels in Israel, Turkey and NYC. The bed of arugula and hollondaise sauce was chef's kiss. My honey is a meat and potatoe dude and the burger he had was sumptuous. A hint of horseradish (he thinks) with the smoky bacon and perfect seasoned fries. In summary... total gastronomic taste gasm. The menu is Southern creative. We started with the biscuits and gravy appetizer which might have been a mistake because I was almost too full for my entree after sampling it. The signature gravy was heavenly! We scooped it up with our forks when we ran out of biscuit. The coffee is excellent and we all enjoyed the fresh squeezed juice. (Those are important touches for breakfast.) the service is super friendly. Maybe could use a more extensive child's menu. My older son eats like a little adult but my younger kid is a typical "kid" eater. Although he loved his waffles and the picture provided for coloring. If I lived in this neighborhood, I'd be walking down here all the time.

I started the meal with a Lions Mane mushroom broth and small bread service. The Lions mane mushroom broth had a mellow earthy flavor that paired well with the warm fresh sourdough bread. My main Entree was a 9-oz pan-seared locally sourced succulent duck breast, absolutely addicting hot honey glaze, and a side of Brussels Sprouts with a lemon garlic aioli sauce. This meal was not only memorable because of the flavors and presentation but also because of the outstanding staff that made my visit feel wanted and warm! HONEST FEEDBACK. The…read moreonly thing that took away from the experience was that it was my wife's birthday, which I had included in the reservation, and there wasn't any acknowledgment of it. I asked the hostess about it, and they said they could add a candle to a dessert if we purchased one. I was a little surprised by that, especially considering we were spending around $200 on the meal. Even just a simple birthday greeting from the staff would have been a nice touch and made the experience feel more special. One other note: the Filet Mignon itself does not come with any real sides, just a small microgreen garnish. At this price point, I would expect at least something simple included, like vegetables or a small accompaniment. We've been to other higher-end restaurants where the steak comes with something like carrots or seasonal vegetables, which helps make the plate feel more complete. Having just the steak on a large empty plate made the meal feel a little underwhelming for the price. I'm not trying to compare restaurants, but we've been to other upscale places where they add small touches like a complimentary dessert, a personalized menu saying "Happy Birthday" or "Happy Anniversary," or even a small celebration moment with a sparkler. Those little details really elevate the experience and make guests feel appreciated. The food was amazing, and the service was quick. We ordered two Filet Mignons, the Gnocchi, Confit Potatoes, and a Coke. Everything we had was delicious. Overall, the food was excellent & delicious, but for the price point, I expected a little more attention to the overall experience and the special occasion.

Her personality, attention to detail, and genuine care for our table stood out immediately. She was engaging, thoughtful, and clearly takes pride in making sure every guest has an amazing experience. Service like that elevates a great meal into a memorable one. Michael, the manager, was equally impressive. I watched him throughout the night--expediting, hustling, and constantly moving to keep the team running at peak efficiency. You can tell when leadership truly cares about the experience in the room, and he absolutely sets the tone for excellence. We later learned the head chef was out on maternity leave, which honestly shocked us because the sous chef was in absolute beast mode. Plate after plate came out flawless. The consistency, quality, and presentation were top-tier--you would never know anything was missing from the kitchen leadership. Now the food... simply incredible. We tried all of the sides, and every single one felt like a masterpiece of its own. Each dish had a genius mix of flavors and the same "wow factor" you'd expect from a main course. Nothing felt like an afterthought. I think my favorites were the beets and sweet potato tots. Who knew those vegetables could be lifted into a literal stand alone experience. I ordered the Ribeye, medium rare, and it was cooked perfectly. The flavor, temperature, and seasoning were of the highest caliber--easily one of the best steaks I've ever had, and I've eaten all over the world. For appetizers we went with the Curry Mussels and Bone Marrow. They were beyond belief. Every plate held its own level of excellence. The food: Amazing. The atmosphere: Amazing. The team: On a whole other level of amazing. We were celebrating a business success, and the team at Asheville Proper made it feel like we were truly winning. Highly recommend. I literally believe these guys just gave me one of the top two meals I have ever had! Keep it up, team!
