Of course, I have been to Panera over the decades, but I recently was back again to try their Pick 2 deals. It was like Draft Day as it was hard to decide on the top picks. There were so many options that just looked so good! I ended up picking the new spicy steak asiago bagel stack and the loaded potato soup. The bagel stack sandwich looked simple, but oh man, it was much more complex and oh so good! It looks pretty straightforward, but everything came together in perfect harmony with plenty of steak slices, the airy, fresh leaves, and the sauce and warm, toasted bagel. That was just right too - not your average bagel, but a hot, crunchy-on-the-outside brioche/bagel that was just tender enough as a bread for such a sandwich. The soup and French baguette also worked really well for such a cold season too. It warmed me up like a cozy fire as I sat inside next to the hearth. And that is what this felt like as many people were lounging and / or doing work and very composed and cozy themselves too. This was spacious enough with a nice, quiet ambience. read more

I forgot how slow the service is at this particular location during Sunday lunch rush. 80% of the people in this Panera are waiting for their food which is rolling out at a snail's pace. Not a good quick-service place to go when you're in a hurry, which is a bit counterintuitive. I wouldn't recommend this location though the parking and proximity to Bridgepoint Shopping Center are convenient. There is a guy who has been waiting since we arrived which I estimate as 35+ minutes. (Update: he left without his food.) There is no one at the front counter to talk to. First visiting this Panera location at Foster City. We live in Millbrae so we usually go to the one there because it's closer to home. Rosa helped me and my wife this morning. We had some questions about the menu and she took her time to answer our questions. We had a couple of sandwhiches for breakfast with a caramel latte and a hot chocolate. Also ordered a big box of bagels for the whole family. A bagel pack and a dozen and a half. I kept going back to the front to ask for extra plastic bags and an extra sandwhich since I was still hungry . I thought I was going to start being a nuisance but every time Rosa was glad to help. This is a review for "John" (possibly Jon, not sure the proper way he likes his name spelt), but he works at the front and is full of knowledge and suggestions for the wonderful menu at Panera Bread on Chess in San Mateo / Foster City. I have been to Panera twice in the past 2 months and after this evening I had to remember to leave a positive review for John and his Staff Members who were also very friendly and polite as well. The vibe you get when you walk in is a very calm and collective atmosphere. Everyone who eats there seems to be from visual in the Tech Sector working remotely, or simply relaxing and enjoying their evening (since I tend to go evenings). John greeted me when I walked in, was very polite and professional and represented Panera Bread very well. I asked for a suggestion and he gave me one. I ended up going with the Tuna Melt for a family member and a Turkey & Bacon Sandwich along with a large bowl of Tomato Soup and opted for the excellent french bread. It was a breeze after placing my order and waiting on the side for my meal to be ready. The people in the back seem to enjoy their job a lot, and are very happy. This is probably the worst Panera Bread around. I ordered via the app and when I got there I waited 15 minutes and still no order. The app said it was completed. I checked the location and I was at the right location. They only made my order once I asked. I had already paid for the order so I couldn't just go next door to Habit. I used to go to Panera all the time in the years right after college so it's been awhile. I was feeling nostalgic for their half soup half sandwich combo so I got that in my most recent visit. The butternut squash soup was very creamy. I would eat this again. I think my favorites from Panera are still the potato soup and the cream of chicken and wild rice soup though! I had a turkey sandwich and it was also pretty decent. The bread was very soft. I had a free dessert in my Panera app (with the combo purchase) so I got their brownie. It was not bad! I cannot believe I paid over $40 for two tiny lunches. Unacceptable for several reasons: 1) the portion size on the bowl of soup was so tiny that it should not have cost $6.50. It was the exact same size as my friends's $4 cup of soup. 2) very little employee involvement. We have to do everything. Place our order on the kiosk, come get our order from the counter, and bus our own plates. 3) When there was a problem with my order, none of the employees could communicate with me in English to fix it. 4) food tasteless and like plastic 5) 40+ for lunch anywhere else would have come with actual human interaction. I'm really surprised at the reviews. I had a really good experience there - ordered the you pick 2 - butternut squash soup and a seasonal salad with chicken. Both were really good. Ended up getting a chocolate chip cookie too because it looked so good- and it did not disappoint. Also went back for the soup again! The place is very clean: I think the building is newer. Out of all the paneras i've been to, this is definitely one of the best ones out there and definitely deserves better than 2.4 stars. Yes, panera isn't a Michelin star restaurant, so expecting the food to be amazing is just ridiculous. The great thing about Panera is you know the quality you are getting and this one is consistent in food quality with many of the others. But, what makes this panera one of the best, is the cleanliness and the decor. It has always been clean and the decor looks like a standard panera but slightly elevated. I think the ambiance of this panera is just one step above the others. Many of the negative reviews note that they have received wrong orders, and I understand mistakes happen. But in my experience, out of the 10 or so times I've been here, none of my orders have ever been incorrect. But its never a bad habbit to check your order before leaving if you are taking to go.... read more

What is going on with this Panera location in Foster City? They shut off all of the electrical outlets in the open area. Are they going out of business? Apparently this happened in mid-December. If it's to stop people from charging laptops and phones, it's a mistake. They will lose business. Also none of the other Paneras have done this. The other locations have whole meetings with people using laptops. Check out Millbrae, Sunnyvale, Mountain View and San Jose. A lot of people spend money and are on their laptops, hanging out for hours. I have seen them. Whatever the Foster City location is trying to do, it's a stupid idea. After waiting over 30 minutes and our order was not even close to being started (you can tell on the order board) we canceled the order - which I had put on a gift card (I was behind 2 other people canceling their order). Panera is fine in general, and this Panera is a nice location. There are plenty of indoor and outdoor seats, and the floor-to-ceiling windows around the dining area give it a lot of natural light. It's a nice place to sit and work for a while. Through January 2022, they have a free trial of daily free coffee through their rewards program, which is worth it to try. The free coffee I tried was their 100% Colombian Dark Roast, which was nice, but light in flavor. I'm guessing that, since the normal size is 20 oz and the larger size is 32 oz, they dilute the coffee somewhat to make the larger sizes work. The breakfast sandwich I had with the coffee was a Bacon, Egg & Cheese on a brioche bun. It was just okay, though the bread itself was actually nice. I added tomato and spinach (which were free, thankfully, since the other toppings cost extra), and while nice, they didn't do much to make the sandwich less plain. read more
