We are frequent Panera customers at many different locations. I stopped in with my family yesterday to get some lunch around 11:20. I understand that businesses like this are not easy to run, but it's not only what happened but how it was handled that made us very upset.
We stopped in at 11:20 thinking that would be plenty of time to get lunch and then head to my son's haircut appointment at 12:15 (which was 5 minutes away). There were about 4 customers in line ahead of us. Despite a peak weekend time, there were only 2 cashiers. Both were super slow, and for a while 1 of them was standing to the side while the manager was doing something to the computer. Not once did either communicate to us. Also, the self-serve kiosks weren't working (although they are very difficult to use with custom orders).
The wait took so long I told my wife and son to go sit down at a table. Overall the wait was 15 minutes until I got to the counter to order. When I got there, the cashier told me that there would be a 10-15 minute wait for food. It was about 11:40, and I thought worst case, it would be 11:55 by the time we got our food. We could eat quickly in 15 minutes and be at our appointment on-time.
At 12:00 I went and asked about our order. The manager (don't know her name but it was a lady) said it would be at least another 5 minutes. She said there were 4 orders in front of me. When I asked if there was any way they could expedite our order given our appointment, she said no. She asked if we wanted our food to go, but I said no--that wouldn't help us. She offered a refund for the food, but that wouldn't do any good. Then we'd be starving and wouldn't eat lunch until after 1. I told her that her team should just do the best they could.
10 minutes later at 12:10 our food came to our table. One of our salads had no dressing on it, there were no knives to cut our bread with, and there were no napkins delivered with 2 of our meals. I had to cancel my son's hair appointment, because who would have thought that 40 minutes is not enough time to eat lunch at Panera?
To over-promise at 10-15 minutes, only to deliver food 30 minutes later is unacceptable. I've had other minor issues at other Panera Bread locations (such as wrong orders) and I've always gotten some kind of comp or a free treat (Panera promises that if an order is messed up, you are supposed to get a free treat). Nothing was offered to us by the manager. Had they been honest and upfront with us, telling us that it would be a 30 minute wait, we would have been a little disappointed but would have appreciated their honesty. That would have allowed us to go somewhere else. The lack of courtesy is disappointing and unprofessional.
This is a poorly-run restaurant that is in need of much improvement. Get better managers. Train your employees better. And for heaven's sake, until the self-serve kiosks work well, you need to staff more cashiers. read more
