Sure, Jersey has the sports teams and has good tomatoes, their pizza is a little weird. And Connecticut, when I start to see folks wearing a Red Sox hat and claiming their state is the pizza king? Makes me want to give them a nuggie. My buddy tells me I have to have a Panzarotti in Jersey. A what? Trust me I'm told. Walking in, it feels like a check cashing spot?? There are no tables to sit. The cashier is behind thick glass. When your order is ready, the cashier opens a small door, puts your food bag in and you open an exterior door to get your food. The menu is throwing me, what the hell are these things? I ordered two, Monday has a cheese Panzarotti special so I ordered two. The second was sausage and cheese. Once I had my food, I ate outside on the trunk of my car. The Panzarotti shell almost looks like a cannoli shell. It has blisters and it's almost sweet? It's not doughy like a calzone either. Inside, is the best part of the pizza, hot cheese and pizza sauce. You can't drive and eat this thing, fagettaboutit! You need to (carefully) bite into it and slowly try to get to the hot cheese and sauce. Very very satisfying indeed. Today I had my sausage and cheese Panzarotti for lunch today. When you think of panzarottis - the tasty comfort food from the Heel of Italy - one has to gravitate towards Tarantini's panzarottis. This is a longtime Camden and South Jersey food tradition. Tarantini's makes several different types of panazarottis but the favorites continue to be the cheese , the pepperoni, & the steak, All are very good. I wanted to go to the Original Tarantini Panzarotti which is located in East Camden in a neighborhood which might make a few people uncomfortable. Still it is def a popular stop. I ordered one cheese and one pepperoni panzerotti and both melted in my mouth. I hope this local tradition continues for a long while. Two tips - 1) If you don't feel like venturing deep into East Camden for your treat, a branch shop in Cherry Hill as well as at Vincent's in Merchantville also sell Tarantini panzarottis. 2) If you take a panzarotti home, you can embellish it even more by adding onions and peppers or even lettuce & tomatoes to this pocket shaped specialty. read more

This was on Guy Fieri DDD NJ places so we topped through on our way to Philly. It's vanilla space inside and there's a window counter to order your panzarottis (no seating inside). We only got the mini ones and I liked the tomato sauce and cheese. My friends thought the skin would be like a calzone and was harder than expected. But I liked the tougher skin. read more

Cast aside your preconceptions of Camden and go to Tarantini's for panazrottis. Yes, that's PLURAL; one for the trip back and at least one more for later. If you are willing to cross the bridge for a visit to Donkey's Place, believe me when I say this highly unassuming take out joint needs to be added to your 'best of Camden' list. My delight knew no bounds when I moved back to Philly in 2015 and learned that the original Tarantini's was still making these bliss bombs. When I was a teenager, this was THE go to place for a delicious, decadent and filling alternative to pizza. Sure, there were plenty of pizza places in Philly but nobody had anything that came close to a panzarotti. Calzones and strombolis are not even in the running. Be warned. These treats are big and messy. Imagine pizza re-engineered as a hefty, deep fried turnover, filled with tomato sauce and cheese, or with pepperoni, steak, sweet Italian sausage, peppers and onions or combinations of the aforementioned. The crust is softly crisp, blistered from the fryer (think an eggroll shell) and it's a deep golden brown. The smell alone makes your mouth water instantly. Be careful taking your first bite, though. The filling is hot hot hot and steam billows out when the fried panzarotti shell is breached. Your fingers will get greasy, you'll drip sauce and oil on yourself and you'll be almost growling with greed as you attack that thing for your next heavenly mouthful. Tarantini's is take out only, so you can eat in your car, tailgate your food or race back over the bridge. The place has zero ambiance but you aren't going for that, anyway. If you've ever gone for Chinese takeout in a sketchy part of town, ordered through layers of plexiglass and received your food through a security window or metal drawer, that will be your experience here. It's Marlton Avenue, it's not hip, it's not gentrified. It's gritty Camden. It's worth it. Panzarottis do travel well and they make fantastic leftovers, too. If you like cold pizza for breakfast, you'll flip over a room temperature panzarotti. Curious and hungry but not prepared to make The Camden Adventure? There is a branch shop in Cherry Hill as well as Merchantville. Since I've never been to either one, I can't comment. read more

First time in Camden. I had to travel down to Camden for work. My client highly suggested this place when I told her I wanted to try a local cuisine. Panzarotti is similar to a calzone. For one price, you can get as many toppings inside your panzarotti. There are about 15 to 20 toppings to pick from. I thought the panzarotti was good but it didn't hit the spot like I thought it would. I was turned off by the amount of grease that was dripping from the panzarotti. We reside in Philadelphia. My husband had some work in the area and we decided to give them a try based upon their reviews and word of mouth. We got 2 turkey sausage Panzarottis. What we received was 1 turkey sausage n 1 pepperoni. Now we do not eat Pork and I am 7 months pregnant so I didn't wanna chance just eating it. We called waited on hold about 15 minutes and informed them of the mistake. My husband asked for a free Panzarotti for the inconvenience( please keep in mind we had to cross the bridge to fix this incompetence resulting in additional gas and $5 toll) to which they said they "cannot do but can give us a drink". I felt this was pretty unprofessional they were pretty unapologetic about the entire situation. My replacement was OK. Nothing to write home about Nd service is everything to me. My earliest experiences w/ Panzarotti's were in the pizzeria's/bars/delis in Delran/Riverside/Maple Shade, NJ. I have found that Original Tarantini makes a better Panzarotti. DEEP FRIED GOODNESS. I've had calzones, strombolis, pizza turnovers but never a panzarotti - until today. I'm sorry I waited to so long. I stopped by after work and found it with the help of GPS. A small location tucked away in Camden, NJ, the trip is well worth it. It's more secure than some banks. All orders are to go since there are only two benches inside to wait for your order. You order through through the glass like ordering movie tickets. They have other offerings (chicken tenders, sandwiches, etc) but this is the home of the panzarotti. Many fillings are offered including cheese, pepperoni (even turkey pepperoni for those health conscious individuals), steak, broccoli and vegetable to name a few. This being my first visit, I ordered broccoli, cheese, pepperoni and steak. After waiting 15 minutes, my order was passed through a secure vault (If you have been to a comcast office to get a cable box, you know what I mean). The smell was heavenly. I'm surprised they survived the ride home. Each pouch is deep fried to golden brown perfection. Crispy on the outside and soft and cheesy on the inside. The entire pouch is not filled to capacity since there is some expansion of the dough with frying. Each panzarotti is about 5" x 4" and 2" high. The wait did not disappoint. Each bite was just the right amount of sauce, cheese and filling of choice. Delicious and filling. I'll be back. read more

'The Panzarotti Spot' belongs in a college town, as it'd be freaking glorious when under the influence. Sober, it's the kinda joint where I see myself indulging once...ever. The clientele seemed to contradict this assumption, as the regulars before and after me ordered up their 'extra cheese' (and left to wait in the car, which I found odd until I waited inside for 15 minutes) with a sense of familiarity and anxiousness that I associated with pizzerias. (The panzarotti, for the unitiated like myself, is essentially a egg-roll-fried mutant calzone.) The space reminded me of a Checkers (and is situated in a neighborhood where they tend to place the burger chain outposts, with a lot of standing space but no intention of seating its customers (though there were 2 awkward benches abutting the back). After strolling in past a dude selling CDs literally on the stoop, my eyes initially darted straight ahead when entering, which left them staring at non-local items and my heart kinda sank. The rightmost sign, fortunately, contained the panzarotti offerings (including a mini option for a quarter less than the regular that the brother unit pointed out must mean multiple minis) - we ordered up a $4 cheese (price had been revised by hand). You're separated by bulletproof dividers*, so follow the sign & 'SPEAK UP' Opening the hot, greasy paper bag, I quickly understood the orders of extra cheese when we received our product - the colossal molten pizza roll was not nearly as packed with oozey goodness as it could've been, though price point disparity pretty substantial. *I'd posit it's more like a bank than ordering movie tickets, but I digress... read more

Ordered a steak and onion panzarotti, 1 plain and 1 mini garlic. They were all very good, I loved them. I deducted 1 star because the garlic tasted exactly like the plain cheese. I'm not sure if I was given both cheese by mistake or the garlic taste is just non existent. Either way I will be back for sure. read more

This is the best place in Camden...hands down. No, its not in the best neighborhood but the employees are nice. Take out only, I have this number programmed in my phone because we always eat here when we visit my MIL. We have tried the turkey , hamburger, steak, plain cheese, hot sausage and sweet sausage--never a complaint...especially from the 4 y/o picky eater.
