Holy moly... I flew into Reno from San Diego. Hungry when I landed and was looking for a deli on Yelp. Ran across Paolo's Deli. I read a few reviews and immediately wanted to try. First: the staff was very welcoming and inviting. Good sense of humor while discussing food options. I landed on the Italian Stallion sandwich. Plus a homemade chocolate chip cookie! I've been meaning to come here ever since it opened but never managed to. Well I finally did and am quite happy with the experience. While it's not huge the restaurant itself has an airy feel to it. I like that different items on the menu are on display. The young woman behind the counter was very nice. The owner is too...even though he's a Boston fan and I'm a Yankees fan. Now for the best...I ordered a meatball hero. I seldom get anything with meatballs because I love them but they don't love me. Except for these! No doubt the best meatballs I've had in years. I went to Paolo's Deli after going to an appointment nearby and looking up highly rated lunch spots. Because I had never been, I was not sure how the ordering worked. There was one waitress who was quick, nice, and managing the whole place. You get your water and utensils and can seat yourself. I did this after ordering at the counter and paying. My sandwich came out quickly. It was an Italian and flavors were great. Fairly large so I took some of it to go. My first time in here and I wasn't expecting much, but WOW. Things change! It's a small old school Italian deli. You order at the counter and they bring it out to your table. Nice lunch spot. We had the muffuletta and eggplant/peppers sandwiches. Both had generous fillings and fresh bread. The eggplant sandwich kept falling apart (a little hard to eat without knife & fork), and was a bit oily. Took home a meat lasagna, which was good (not the best take-home we've had) and on the pricey side for a cold deli case lasagna. A small selection of Italian sundries also for sale. Hands down to the best sandwich I've had in forever my massage therapist (who is around the corner of Paolo's deli) recommended this place and she wasn't wrong when she said this place was top notch. I order the prosciutto mozzarella arugula sandwich, and it was simple but delicious,perfect seasoning and the prosciutto was fresh a so fresh that it got sliced infront of me, they even gave me a complimentary slice. The place is roomy with plenty of seating. the staff was friendly and attentive. I think this is one of those sandwiches that you just wake up in the middle of the night and you're like man. Another awesome lunch at Paolo's! Every time you go in, you are happily greeted by either the owner/Chef (?) or the nice lady behind the cash register. My husband and I always split the mista salad and a sandwich. Today we split the turkey sandwich with fontina and sun-dried tomatoes. Both were off the charts! The mista salad is light and refreshing. I'm not sure what they put in the dressing, but it is amazing! The combination of cool pasta, beans, eggplant, olives and lettuce is delicious. The turkey, fontina, and sun-dried tomato sandwich is also delicious. The sandwich roll is light and very fresh. Plus, I really appreciate how they split the order into individual servings. You leave feeling content but not stuffed. Which to me, means I've had the perfect lunch. We will definitely go back! Again and again.... read more

I loved this sandwich shop and deli. This is one of the best chicken parm sandwiches and one of the best Italian meatball subs that I have ever had. I couldn't decide which sandwich to get to I got both. Great decision! The service was amazing. It felt like we were eating at someone's home and there was so much love in the food. We aren't usually on this side of town but my husband has really been wanting to try this place, so we finally made a point to come here recently! My husband lived in Italy for a year and was stoked to find an Italian deli here in Reno. He got the Italian Stallion with Porchetta, Salami, and Mortadella. I got the Spicy Soppressata and Ham sandwich. Our friends who came with us got the Chicken Caesar and Chicken Parm sandwiches. All four of us loved our food! The meats are high quality, the bread is delicious, and the sandwiches were packed full of ingredients. The freshness of the ingredients really stood out to us--that made simple sandwiches turn out tasting even better than you'd expect. They have chips, salads, and desserts you can purchase as well. The guy working was super helpful and kind. I watched an elderly man come in to pick up a box of food, and the staff member carried it out to the car for him to help load everything up. The staff member addressed the elderly man and his wife by name, so I'm sure they are regulars. That type of service says a lot about a business and the people who work there! This deli is a hidden gem, my husband said it tastes really similar to delis you'd find in Italy. We will keep this place in mind for future lunches! read more

Service is impeccable; it's personal! My family has been before and I've been dying to try it. Today was the day. First of all the staff is absolutely amazing. They were welcoming when we walked in and so accommodating. I got a meatball sub for my husband and I wanted one too but didn't want to have it soggy by the time I got home so they were so nice to deconstruct it for me. My daughter loves prosciutto and without asking, they have us both some to try. It was so delicious. They also let my daughter create a sandwich that wasn't on the menu. We waited in the cute dining room for it to be ready. When we got home the sandwiches were perfect. read more

To be fair, this review only touches on a Muffaletta sandwhich to-go. Before ordering, I questioned the person who took my order about the bread used and I was informed that the bread was made by Truckee Sourdough Bakery, I think. No choice on bread, only a white roll and, as any sandwhich connoiseur will tell you, the key to a great italian sub is the bread and it must be "croccante!". Unfortunately this was not the case. The sandwhich ingredients were excellent and plentiful but the bread was soft and bland. Paolo's offers a lot of other hot food items so perhaps sandwhiches are not their thing. Not something I would order again but perhaps the hot pasta dishes are the reason folks go here. read more

Finally got to try Paolo's sandwiches. I can't think of a single thing to change for improvement. I got the Italian Stallion and also tried a bit of the eggplant sandwich as well. Both of the were so perfectly delicious. Every ingredient was fresh tasting, the bread soft with a lightly crisp crust. The lettuce mixture was a fresh and varied spring mix and dressed lightly, a couple of bright notes of basil in the mix as well. So delicious. My wife and I decided to stop in about 11:30am on a Saturday. As you walk in there are several small tables on the outside under the covered area. The inside has about 10 tables and orders are placed at the counter. We looked at the menu and everything sounded delicious!  My wife chose the chicken Caesar sandwich and she had to try the pasta salad which everyone raves about! I decided on the meatball sandwich. As we paid for our order several more people arrived and it quickly got busy. The pasta salad arrived first and my wife LOVED it. It was simple but tasted delicious! When our sandwiches arrived they also looked very tasty. We both really enjoyed our food and commented we will be back again very soon! We remembered this location used to be something else but the logo on the door says established in 1990. My wife asked and they told us that they used to have a deli across the street years ago and sold it. The deli continued to operate with several different owners. So Paolos Deli is owned by the former owner of La Familia Italian Restaurant in Down Town Reno. He has since sold La Familia .. think it's owned by another family member. Apparently Paolo opened an Italian Deli in Reno many, many years ago ... across the street from their current location. He went on to open Portofino and later La Familia and then he retired. But decided he would start all over again and opened Paolos Deli in it's current location. As told to us by his nephew (or was it his brother in law). It's a walk in and order kind of place. Food to go or to eat there. They will bring you order to you. I had Capresse Sandwich, which was excellent. And it was big enough that I took half home and had it two days later .. still excellent. My sister had Canneloni, and my friend had an Eggplant Sandwich .. which she also took home half. The olive oil they used was really, really good. Put a little extra on the 1/2 sandwiches we took home. I order Eggplant Parm to go & my friend order Lasagne to go. Both were very good. Personally I would have preferred a little more sauce, so next time I order to go I'll ask for extra .. my personal choice. They also have some cheeses and limited cold cuts for sale, along with a limited amount of dry goods. The have limited wine & beer selections. Soft drinks and some Italian soda. The Italian Lemonade was really good. All reasonably priced and I'm looking forward to going again. read more

If this place doesn't scream friendly neighborhood deli, nothing will. Walking in you are greeted by the friendly staff (Roxy) that are eager to help. Sandwich menu has quite a few options but not overwhelming. The ham, turkey and provolone sandwich is one of my favorites. The meats and cheeses are great but the bread is also a hit with all of their sandwiches. In addition to sandwiches, they have many pastas dishes to go. The spaghetti and meatballs have become one of my favorites. While you're waiting, they have a nice selection of Italian products for sale- olives oils, pastas other other treasures to be had.
