This may be owned by the same owner's as Johnny's but there is NO resemblance in the high quality caliber. I would describe this restaurant as "business casual". When you walk into the restaurant you walk down the center of the building between two dining areas which makes it feel more like a takeout place rather than formal dining. I also agree with another review I read that said this Italian food didn't taste particularly special. Everything we tried tasted like something that your standard grocery store/home cook could make. Even the chicken Parmesan was disappointing! I was especially disappointed because we came to celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary and the waiter didn't even have any recommendations of wine pairings to go with the different entrées. The bread that was served at the table had little burnt pieces of garlic and was flavorless. The oil and balsamic blend provided had little balsamic in it and every time I dipped my bread I usually got only oil and no balsamic. The outdoor patio was nice until the loud noise from a car wash(?) turned in every 5-10minutes. I opted for the following food items: * Bowl of Minestrone Soup ($7.50): a hearty vegetable soup with a tomato-based broth. Served with house-made bread. * Vegetable Lasagna ($17.50): Prepared with layers of pasta sheets, béchamel, ricotta, spinach, zucchini, mushrooms, marinara sauce, parmesan, and mozzarella. Served with house-made bread. First and foremost, I experienced satisfaction with every bite of the food. The soup was so warm and comforting with the fresh vegetables. The bread was a nice complement to soak up the tomato broth. The Lasagna was absolutely delicious. The portion of the slice was generously huge, and the taste was on point, especially with the personal request of extra marinara sauce (I always love extra sauce on pastas in general). The hospitality from all staff members was so amiable and attentive. They ensured that I had everything I needed during the dining experience. For both my soup and pasta, I was given the topping of freshly grated Parmesan cheese. The interior of the restaurant was small, yet cozy, with a welcoming feel for families. What a lovely restaurant! The hubs brought me here for a birthday lunch for our first time and we had a great experience ! We ordered the Johnny's Garlic Bread and Parmesean Crusted Calamari Steak as an appetizer and I got the Shrimp Scampi as an entree. I really enjoyed both appetizers. The Johnny's Garlic Bread is definitely a must! I love that they put actual garlic bits on the bread and it paired really well with the pasta dish. The calamari steak was also really good. The Parmesan flavor was really delicious and the calamari was cooked perfectly. The shrimp scampi was also very good. I appreciate the freshness from the tomatoes and the shrimp was flavorful. Four of us had dinner here on a Saturday night. The weather was very nice so we sat out on the patio. It was a very nice experience. We had reservations so we were promptly seated. I really like their patio. It's very small and very pleasant. Shortly after we were seated, our server arrived. She told us the daily specials and gave us a few minutes to look at the menu. She returned shortly thereafter, and took our orders. I appreciate the fact that not only did she let us split salads, she told us she would bring the salads before our entrées arrived. I've been to several restaurants lately that bring the salad at the same time they bring the entrée. I'm not a fan of that because as I'm eating my salad, my dinner is getting cold. My husband and I shared a Cashell salad. It was the perfect size. The lettuce was crisp and fresh and the salad was full of cranberries and nuts. The dressing was delicious. After we were done with our salads, our server cleared our plates and our dinners arrived shortly thereafter. I had the baked rigatoni in Bolognese sauce. It was delicious. It was piping hot, the sauce was robust, the ricotta cheese was delightful, and the pasta was cooked perfectly. It was such a large portion. I only ate half. For dessert, I had the Italian wedding cake. It's one of my favorite desserts in town and I wasn't disappointed. The cake was fresh and the frosting was delicious. The staff was attentive, though sometimes a bit rushed, which makes sense given how busy it was. I'm not sure if they usually offer specials, but if they had any that night, they didn't mention them. The food was good as always. I got the porcini mushroom ravioli and the sauce was excellent. Someone in my group had the blackened chicken Alfredo it was tasty, but the heavy seasoning on the chicken ended up overpowering the sauce. Another pick was the pineapple pizza, which was very cheesy and hit the spot. Overall, La Cucina stays one of my top three go-to Italian spots in Reno. We ordered the baked rigatoni and chicken parm. The chicken parm with the cheese was sooo good and the pasta had a lot of garlic but honestly it worked. The rigatoni was super cheesy and comforting. Also the bread they give you is amazing, I would love a sandwich on that. Finished with tiramisu and that was easily the best part of the meal. Great lunch here today with friend. They opened at 11, reservations at 1130 so got right in. Not busy yet so chose our seat. We've been here several times in the past and enjoy the menu variety. Ordered half sandwich and salad combo which is always the perfect amount. Today I ordered the Italian BLT which came on sourdough and came with an abundance of bacon, lettuce, tomato with melted fontina cheese and a pesto spread. Very good! Cesar salad tossed in dressing with croutons finished off the meal. We enjoyed a chilled Italian Pinot Grigio that was nice and not sweet. The decor here is very nice and service was good today. We went to dinner here to celebrate my daughter's birthday. They were a little busy and we had to wait for our table. No big deal. After about 5 minutes, we were seated. We were served water and bread pretty quickly but no server for 15 minutes. The manager came to take our orders and was apologetic. I'm not sure how much time had gone by but it was a hefty wait. All meals came out but my chicken marsala. The food runner asked if I had ordered anything. At this point, it had been so long I don't even remember what I ordered. Ten minutes later, my dinner arrives and it looks awful. The chicken looked like it had been beaten by a hammer. See the photo below. The manager/server never apologized or offered a new meal. She just continues to avoid us. The reviews of awful service are true. At least the rest of the family enjoyed their dinner. We will be avoiding this place. The food was absolutely AMAZING. Second time I've eaten here and it never disappoints. Came here for my hubby's birthday with his family and they all loved it too. Service was great as well. We went around 3 o'clock and there was almost no one there. Glad we came before the dinner rush because there were a LOT of tables already reserved. Only complaint I have is that the food took quite awhile to arrive but overall it was a nice dining experience. Let me first say that the staff were wonderful and welcoming! We ordered the spicy angel hair pasta and bruschetta and both were disappointing. The bruschetta came out al la cart, toasted bread, cheese in a ramekin bowl and tomatoes in a separate bowl, which made for less than appealing presentation. The spicy angel hair pasta came in a bowl so hot we could not touch it for over 5 minutes, which told us they microwaved it at the end. Also not spicy - red pepper flakes seemed to be missing. From the time we ordered to the time the food arrived was maybe 5min which tells you a lot. Very unfulfilling and disappointing and unfortunately we shall not return. Food needs to be freshly prepared especially the pasta and more of an effort needs to be made with the presentation. read more

Celebrating my wife's birthday, we wanted a nice dining atmosphere with little crowd noise. I set a reservation for 3:45 to beat even the early dinner crowd. We arrived 25 minutes early and it was perfect. The dining tables are a unique hammered metal texture that provides a very homey feeling. We began with an antipasto plate, and fried calamari fingers with marinara sauce. I added an espresso with the appetizers as I had missed my nap. The chef absolutely nailed the calamari! So tender and tasty. For the entree I ordered the Tuscan grilled salmon and my wife selected Parmesan crusted Calamari Steak. Both entrees were accompanied with a generous helping of Angel Hair Pasta with sauce and freshly grated Parmesan cheese, For desert we had Vanilla bean and Sicilian Pistachio Gelatos. My girlfriend and I were the only two people there on the back patio in the summertime, nobody else in the restaurant. We were finally greeted by our server and when I was giving her my order she stared off into a space and then said " I'm sorry I wasn't listening can you repeat that?" this alone ruined my dining experience. I've been a server before, and I legitimately cannot justify a time where a server can say that to a customer. La Cucina, which fittingly means "The Kitchen" in Italian, sits on the corner of Lakeside Drive and Moana, right next to the Chevron station in the old Godfather's Pizza building. My wife and I found ourselves in the area on a Wednesday evening and decided to give it a try. It was our first visit. As we approached the hostess stand, we were greeted with a warm hello and asked if we had a reservation. When we said no, she looked a bit concerned and started scanning her reservation book. We quickly offered to sit at the bar instead, which seemed to ease the moment--she smiled and led us right over. The bar area had a relaxed vibe with a few flat screens showing live sports. One of the first things that caught my eye was how reasonably priced the wine list was. We ended up choosing a bottle of Italian Sangiovese for just $35 while we debated between two appetizers. When we asked the bartender which of the two she recommended, she surprised us by saying, "neither!" My wife and I laughed and asked what she would suggest, if any? She pointed us toward a seared provolone appetizer--and wow, it did not disappoint. Perfectly fried, drizzled with a flavorful sauce, and topped with pine nuts, it was a standout dish. I'll definitely be ordering it again on our next visit. For my entrée, I went with the Rustica pizza, which lives up to its name--hearty and full of flavor. The crust was spot on, and the toppings worked beautifully together with just enough spice to blend well with the wine. Positives: you can add grilled or blackened chicken to any pasta dish or shrimp or salmon. When they bring your food out someone will offer fresh grated Parmesan or black pepper. First time trying this place. We didn't have a reservation and it was pretty busy so we chose to sit at the bar. We were immediately greeted with water and some warm bread to start. The bread was perfectly warm and soft with crunchy garlic on top. Our waitress suggested the sautéed provolone. It did not disappoint! We got turned away tonight because we had a baby with us. We walked in and the hostess immediately said "we're too busy sorry". My husband asked what the wait would look like and she again said "we're too busy" with at least 4 tables being open. I just called the store seconds after walking out and someone else answered the phone other than that hostess and I asked how long a wait would be for a table of 3(I didn't mention a baby just said table for 3) and she said we can be sat immediately. Our baby was in no way disruptive and she's a well behaved baby. This is absolutely unacceptable and I'm pretty sure it's illegal to deny service at a restaurant for having a kid with you. I'm not a red sauce kind of person in general, and then for dietary reasons, I can't have tomatoes anymore. I've tried a lot of pesto at a lot of places, and I gotta say that this is one of the best. I get the Chicken Menzel. This time, we had lunch (and a little light on the pesto this time). The menu offers rigatoni with marinara as a side but I substitute angel hair pasta with pesto for an uncharge. Dinner comes with the best, fresh green beans cooked with garlic. We have had out of town guests try pretty much everything off the menu, but a popular one is the lasagna. Their food is fresh and it matters. This time my friend got the Pasta Primavera. I don't think you can go wrong with any dish on the menu. I find it interesting that, after all these years, there are still people who have never eaten here, and if you're one of them, I highly recommend you rectify that quickly.
