We loved it the first time we came here around a year ago. However, this time, the food was cold, and it felt like the meat was pre-cooked and mixed in at the very last second along with the sauce. Nothing unfortunately tasted fresh. Charring/caramelizing the dishes would go a long way in making the food taste better. read more

This was the first time dining at Papa Chen. There was no one in the restaurant when we arrived on a Saturday. The place was very clean and we were waited on immediately. I had hot and sour soup (excellent) and green beans with chicken, shrimp and Thai sauce. My only complaint about it was that the sauce was not really spicy even though the menu and waitress said it would be. It was also a bit sweeter than I expected. But, still a very good dish. My husband had the egg roll. He though it needed salt but after adding soy sauce, he was very pleased. He had the shrimp with lobster sauce. It was very, very good. We plan to make this place a regular for us. One thing - they only have canned or bottled sodas. No fountain drinks. I prefer fountain drinks so that is my only disappointment but that is personal preference and not restaurant's issue. read more

The food was fresh and delicious. The crispy Vietnamese spring rolls don't have meat or veg, only cabbage. Not my favorite. That being said the soft spring rolls were absolutely spectacular. I got the general tso and an eggroll. Excellent food! It blows 888 to shame. The red dipping sauce was even good. The sauces on all of our dishes was not over done where it congealed as a putty left over dish. I brought my family and everyone was happy! The service lady was a prompt to take are order but lagged in speed afterwards. The ambience is quiet and kind of dark lighting. The server she was really kind and came by several times to check on us too. No fountain drinks only bottles. My wifes meifun was sooooo good according to her! The best! A nice little joint. This place is in a small strip anchored by Kroger. It sits just a few doors down from some of the best pizza in the Houston area (Roma). Interestingly enough, this is some of the better Chinese food in the area. As always, I order the hot & sour soup, and this stuff is a nice combo of spice, tart and thickness. The egg rolls, albeit small, are also delicious. These have the taste of something rolled on the premises, which is rare these days. What really impressed me though was the General Tso's Chicken. Sure, this dish is trite -- about as Chinese as Whataburger -- but it's also a standard, and Papa Chen does it well. Generally, I prefer dark meat in chicken dishes because most joints serve dry white meat. Not Papa Chen. These were crispy and melty morsels, plain and simple. And the sauce was a nice balance of sweet and spicy. Am I a white meat convert? With this place I am. And that's saying a lot. Can't wait to come back and try the other dishes. read more

We ran across this place a few years ago, and it had become one of our favorite places to get take out! The shrimp fried rice is sooo good and they use real shrimp! Not those tiny baby ones! They use nice big ol' ones! Also We custom order Shrimp (the big ol' ones) with string beans in a spicy brown sauce and it's always delicious! One night I was working and couldn't make it home for dinner so I ordered for my husband and asked to put a special note in the order. And she did! Great people! I gave Papa Chen a 5 for multiple reasons. I've been ordering delivery from them for years. Tonight I got the House Egg Foo Young and it was excellent. YUM. Don't know why i never ordered it. Love the brown sauce that came with it. The pic only shows 2, but I already ate 1. LOL. Papa Chen is consistent and they ALWAYS get my orders correct. And you can get delivery directly and their staff delivers it. It ensures your food temperature is right and they ALWAYS delivery on time. Normally they are here in a flash. Loved this place. My wife was in mood for Chinese food and found Papa Chen not far from the hotel with good reviews. My daughters first comment, which personally it's a good sign for me, "there's Asian people here!" . We had a feast. We ordered so much food we brought some home. I ordered my food. When I picked it up was told it was More than the advertised price. I showed them the menu I got in the mail 2 days prior. They said the prices on the menu were not being honored. The egg roll had no flavor and very little stuffing. The sweet and sour sauce was not in the bag when I got home. I ordered sweet and sour chicken. The delivery was fine, although he didn't have a pen for me to sign. which really isn't that big of a deal, its just something that he should have had. what if I didn't have anything to write with? I almost had to use my kids crayons to sign. We ordered the Pork Lo Mein, and it was kind of flavorless. There were only a small amount (of very thinly sliced) pork. It may as well have just plain lo mein noodles and nothing else. Even the color of them were just off? I dont know, it was severely lacking. We also got the sweet and sour pork. The pork was soggy and cold, and the fried rice that came with it was mostly white rice with a little bit of color. I think there was more pineapple and bell pepper than there was pork. The pork was way over cooked as well. The dish came with an egg roll and it was nothing more than a pre-cooked frozen one. slight freezer burn flavor, just what I wanted! :| The best thing we got was the Crab Rangoon's. They were not the best Ive had, they were just the best thing out of what we ordered. I didn't expect them to be so sweet, they weren't Cheese rangoons, so I expected something a bit more savory. I must say if nothing else the place is impressive. The owners actually cook the food! I ordered won ton soup, egg roll and generals chicken. The soup was really good and they didn't scoop it out of a tub in the back. It was fresh and the wontons were some of the best I have ever had. The egg rolls were sub par at best and for the size of them they weren't worth the price, I'd say go ahead and skip these. The Generals chicken was good I'd give it a 7 out of 10 and here's why, the were a bit floury but the taste was good. I have definitely had better. The chicken came with a side of rice and I opted for the dollar upcharge for the fried rice. It was good they give you a pretty big potion so the dollar is well spent. All in all the service was great and the food was decent. I will go back and try a different dish next time. read more

To start I have to echo Nick O. The staff was super friendly and attentive. Food came out fast and was fresh. The small place is decorated very attractively. The egg roll was good. This rating isn't really fair to the restaurant because if you've read my other Chinese reviews you know I love General Tso's Chicken but I'm VERY picky about it. It's done many ways. I always order it at a new Chinese restaurant to find out if they do it my way. Their sauce was excellent but it turned out they don't do the chicken my way so it wasn't a high point for me. My companion ordered the stir-fried green beans. He reported they were good but not the best. I really wanted to give a better rating as I liked the staff and the ambiance. I had decided if no one else had reviewed them I wouldn't post mine. They have gotten several good reviews and I suspect if we had ordered other dishes we'd feel the same. We ordered delivery and they came very quickly. I had pork fried rice with extra pepper oil and it was delicious. They do not put peas and carrots in the pork fried rice. I was thankful for that because I usually eat around them. The crab Rangoon was fantastic. My boyfriend said they are the best he has ever had. We also got generals chicken which was spicy and tasty. We will definitely be ordering from them again. Update. They no longer deliver to our area. We tried ordering from other places closer to us but they were all terrible compared to Papa Chen. Not super-unique, but one of the better Chinese restaurants in the League City area, conveniently located next to a UPS drop-off postal store and Kroger. Inside the ambiance is cozy and friendly in this tiny little family-owned restaurant. After hearing so much about their Crab Rangoon in other reviews, I had to try it even though I was only there by myself for lunch. It came out piping hot and crispy on the outside, fresh-tasting and gooey cream-cheesy on the inside, served with a nondescript sweet and sour sauce. Too big a portion to eat before my lunch came, so I took most of it home for dinner that night. :) I then had the Kung Pao chicken with fried rice for my main lunch. Large portion with delicious sauce and they definitely did not scrimp on the chicken pieces which were cooked just right. The fried rice seemed like brown rice with some egg mixed in but nothing else. It came with an egg roll that seemed heated up from frozen, so I'll probably go for soup next time. I was stuffed after this! Service was attentive to refilling the smallish drink glasses. I didn't check out the bathroom but the whole restaurant was clean looking and smelling. I don't remember if music was playing, which is a good thing. Tables were cleared as soon as customers left. Solid 3 1/2 stars. I'll certainly be returning for lunch again, and maybe takeout dinner. read more

I've been here twice. The first time I got chicken lo mein and it was super good and I had more than enough leftovers for dinner the next day. I actually got chicken lo mein from a different restaurant in the area a week later and thought the one from here was much better. Just had another great take-out meal. The food is fresh with crisp vegetables. Our favorite is Beef Pad-Thai that we order regularly with the Crab Ragoons. Tonight we had an addition of Chicken Lo Mein and Mixed Vegetable with Chicken. We also tried the Shrimp Rolls tonight and were very pleased. Then I realized it was the most perfectly cooked General Tso's Chicken I've ever had. Still crunchy while drenched in a perfectly balanced sauce. Amazingly good for such a nondescript place. Try it!
