How can you be closed on the weekends, your busiest days and people wonder why New Mexico businesses aren't thriving. The store hours are literally from 11 to 7. The chimichanga taste like it was cooked in Old burnt oil. The tortilla was completely saturated in Grease. There was one lady who took the orders served the food and bust the tables. 1st time at Papa Nacho's and the tacos were delicious! I'm a taco person and I'm always looking for crispy tacos like you find in Olvera Street or other taco places in California. Let's start with the corn chips... So crunchy and good. Then the salsa! So good we bought a pint to take home. The fish tacos were served in two soft corn tortillas with sides of beans and rice. So flavorful! Just enough spice and heat without being overpowering. The nachos were smothered in beef, mozzarella and cheddar cheese, beans and all the toppings. I am always on the lookout for hidden secret mom & pop restaurants, and this time, I was looking for gorditas to beat Little Diner in Canutillo, TX. Sadly, these gorditas were not the ones, but they weren't bad. Prices are high considering the total lack of atmosphere. But worse, the sopapillas are the worst I've ever had in my life. Very nice people, working hard. Great food. The green chili isn't really spicy but it has a good flavor. There were a lot of take-out orders that went through the Saturday we were here -- which makes sense because the place is pretty small! The waitstaff were hopping, but still managed to provide great service, answering our first-timer questions and bringing hot food with cold beer. I had a combination plate: shredded beef taco with a cheese enchilada, rice and beans. The rice and beans were good and my wife noted that they had a good portion of whole beans left in the smashed refried which created a nice texture. Over the course of the years I've accumulated to New Mexico but there is nothing like California Mexican food. Guess what, they are from Southgate, CA. Oh good grief this place has excellent food! They just opened back up for take out service the day before we arrived in town. We ordered at a table that was set up just outside their doors. We chose two carne asada tacos, which came with a side of pico de gallo and guacamole, as well as two fried chicken tacos (apparently these are not on the menu). We waited in our car, as it was hot outside, and she brought our food out to us. Along with our order we got complimentary chips and salsa. Everything was quality. The flavors were great, and the chicken tacos were packed full of moist chicken. The carne asada tacos were big. Very filling. So glad that we stopped! Excellent service, and great food. read more

My co-worker had bought us dinner from here and it was such a nice gesture. Looking at the reviews, I had been excited about trying something new (sorry, sad sloppy Joe I had brought for dinner). I ordered the chicharron taco plate, thinking it would be a little more manageable for my smaller appetite. The price was good around $11 with an $1.79 upcharge for the chicharron. Unfortunately, their version of "chicharron" wasn't quite as expected... it was mostly shredded, crispy pork more like carnitas and on the drier side, which certainly could've used a little sour cream and crema. Overall, it was tasty and flavorful and I loved the beans. But, the rice was about average. One taco was stuffed with plenty of enough meat, but the one taco filled me up . Well, that's my reality and I picked Papa Nachos! It was one of the first places I ate when I moved to Albuquerque and is still the absolute best New Mexican food I've ever had! My father-in-law had the cheese enchiladas with green chile and LOVED them! My husband and I split a dish of red chile cheese enchiladas and they were to die for! This is the best red chile in town. It is flavorful without being too hot. Just the right amount of heat! And the Spanish rice is the perfect flavor. Same with the beans. We also split a half order of nachos and there is a reason it is in the name of the restaurant! There is a bite to it and flavor in each bite! The secret of this restaurant is the homemade salsa. Tasty Mexican food but the paper plates and plastic ware are a bit of a turn-off. They probably don't have the facilities for washing dishes but the prices should be more in line with that. The wait staff is very friendly and helpful. They open at 11:00 and are full up at 11:15 so that shows you how popular they are. A very large following. read more

My hubby and I have loved Papa Nachos In the past, and we were so excited to return there for a plate of nachos as we traveled through Albuquerque on our way towards Phoenix. We were served homemade chips and salsa which were great starters to the meal we had waited hours for. Unfortunately, we were disappointed in our entree of Papa Nachos. Although the huge portion was as expected, the flavor was just not up to par this time. I have to give them grace, because it must be difficult to serve a huge portion of nachos in a styrofoam container and make the presentation spot-on as well as the taste. I didn't taste the meat or much green chili, but was overwhelmed with the portion of refried beans on the chips. The people who run the place are so kind, but the service was lacking yesterday as well. Not sure why... just a little off their game possibly. I'm hoping we can go back and try it again before making our final judgment on the place. I think Papa Nachos is their signature dish, but maybe we will try something different next time. SO...my husband got a burrito to go, and I had to add one more start after munching it down. It was an extremely large portion , but was just much better tasting then the Nachos. I still wish there was a green Chile verde sauce over it, but the flavors were all there. I have been meaning to try this place out for a while and finally got a chance a few weeks ago (sorry, long overdue review!) for lunch. I'm so glad we stopped in! Although it was pretty quiet when we visited, the service was great. The chips and salsa were tasty but watch out if you can't handle spicy salsa (on par with Sadie's, I would say). I ordered the combo plate, as I always do when I haven't been to a place before to try a few different things. The one I got had a relleno, taco, and enchilada. Everything was excellent- the relleno, despite being doused in chile, was the perfect level of crisp on the outside with the delicious breading. All in all, I'm definitely a fan. The portions are good sized and there was enough left over to have for breakfast the next day with an egg (yeah, cuz that's how we do in the 505). Prices were also very reasonable. There was tons of selection, it was really hard to decide so I guess my only option is to go back. Oh darn.
