Avoid. Waiter repeatedly messed up our table's tab and then ripped us off by demanding that we pay for food that someone had already paid for. Also, worst margarita I've ever had. This place has some of the best Mexican food, no, it's not Tex-Mex, it's Mex-Mex. Monclova is the city and Coahuila is the state. The Taco Pirata is out of this world. Love the queso enchiladas too. On the appetizer side, I'd stay away from Champinones Huerfanos. The regular salsa they bring to the table is flavorful, not spicy. They have a hot one, but all you taste is hot, no flavors. The Platillo Monclova is also an excellent choice and was enough food for two or to take some home. The outdoor patio is nice. It overlooks Sage, is covered, and has both heaters and fans to be used as the weather changes. If you like a good margarita, theirs can't be beat. During happy hour (4-7), the large which normally goes for $10 is only $5. When I say large, I do mean large. Two of these and you had better have a designated driver. I almost hate putting a review here on them as they seem to still be an unknown entity so it is never crowed, but I would truly hate to see them leave. Give this place a shot. If you are looking for Tex-Mex, you will be disappointed, but if you are looking for Mexican. The prices are reasonable, the service is ok, and the employees are all great. read more

Got there at 9. Had to valet for $10. Pretty sure there is no chance can park for free in the lot since is small. I was told to get there around 9 because later they charge cover apparently. I would never pay cover to go to this place. I got the pionero. The menu describes it as: Grilled Melted Cheese with beef, bacon, onions & green peppers. Imagine ordering those toppings on a pizza then just pulling off the cheese+topping layer. Not terrible when put in a tortilla and adding some salsa (the salsa that came with the stale chips). But I don't really like having to get clever at restaurants. Actually imagine making nachos in the microwave and ripping off the top cheese layer. That's better. Oh yeah, the chips were kinda stale or chewy by design. When it went into "club mode" around 10, we went outside for a bit. Really hot since not many fans were on. Inside it felt like they turned off the AC at some point. Patron Silver is $10. Ridiculousness. The place felt safe and clean. Lots of off duty cops outside and visible. Lots of nice TVs and nice design inside. The DJ played music I haven't really heard before... then he'd put in some songs that I heard before that liked and would go back into music that I didn't hear before. Lots of people left the dance floor then came back... I think the DJ (guy standing behind MacBook pro with headphones) played music that he liked. Bring some dollar bills for the bathroom valet. The people who go there seemed cool. Definitely gets a 5 out of 5 on my "no fist pump" rating (you lose a star for sarcastic fist pumps and there were none). Oh yeah, out of like 6 of us who ate, at least 2 really hated the food. I figured I just ordered something stupid but I think the food might actually just be bad. This is literally the worst restaurant that I have ever been to, EVER. The lady secretly ripped us off for extra money and laughed in our face about it. She gave us complimentary salsa and chips for our starter like they do for everyone. After setting it on our table, she chalantly asked with these exact words, "would you also like cheese or guacamole?" We were just like ok sure, we'll have some cheese. She NEVER once mentioned that it would cost extra, she didn't say a price or anything. She came back with a small bowl of what tasted like microwaved cheese. Fast forward some 30 minutes later, we get the bill. She charged $6.50 for the small bowl of microwaved cheese. We called her to the table and told her that she never told us it costed money for the cheese. She said super rudely, "nothing's ever free" and LITERALLY started laughing straight to our faces. She knew she basically stole money from us and was happy she got away with it. I've never been more enraged in my life. I felt so upset that I got ripped off for our hard earned money. Against my better judgement, Me and my partner went here for dinner. As soon as we walked in we could tell their two stars were well deserved... but, we pushed forward. We were seated at the bar per our request and the waitor/host walked up to a section of the bar and stopped. It was covered in grease and the remnants of the last patrons dinner. So we stood there awkwardly until he realized that he probably should put some effort into cleaning it up... didn't look like a staffing issue since everyone was basically standing around(concerning during a time where cleanliness is a big issue in our world). Our stoic bartender proceeded to take our order leaving and coming back to ask us on three separate occasions to ask what we had just said, AFTER CONFIRMING IT WITH US! Seriously three times... (this wasn't a major issue just annoying since she couldn't be bothered to speak loud enough for us to hear her). We ordered drinks that we maybe consumed less than half of and tacos that we couldn't even eat. His were rubbery and dry and mine tasted like they came right out of a grease trap that hadn't been cleaned in months. And on top of it all... she asked how the food was since we didn't eat even 10% of it or really drink our drinks. We told her what was stated above, along with the fact that my frozen margarita left a film in my mouth, and proceeded to bring us our full priced check :). We paid full price without a gripe and left our "dinner" . Didn't even offer to remake it or make something else. I will say this. At least they know how to use the register! I only went here for drinks while on a business trip. Not much of beer selection, had your average domestics (Bud and Coors) and Mexican beers (Tecate, Modelo, etc) but nothing special. The most annoying thing about the place was the DJ. Absolutely no one was dancing (restaurant/bar was probably 1/3 full) and they just kept pumping up the volume playing terrible music. Everyone with an computer with DJ software thinks they are a DJ these days. Being around the Galleria area I am sure there are better bars to go to. Had to revise this one, I went a few weeks ago for lunch and found multiple hairs in my quesadilla - I may never go back! ----------------------------- I just had to write a review when I saw this place only had 2 stars! I recently moved to the area from Phoenix and this is some of the best Mexican food I've found in Houston. I usually go here for lunch or happy hour. I usually get the tacos de bistec - 5 corn tortillas with steak, cilantro and onions. It's a lot of food, but very good! They usually bring you a complementary soup at lunch as well. I also really like the enchiladas de pollo comes with a green sauce and you get 4 of them and beans and rice, so plenty to share. The chips are great and the homemade salsa is really good - the green is my favorite. If you want something spicier ask for the habanero sauce. Happy hour is a great deal, the giant margaritas are only $5! They are huge and pack a powerful punch! I did go one night around 9:30 to have a drink with my boyfriend and it was good we got in before 10 because that is when they started charging cover. We did feel a bit out of place being the only gringos in the place, so we left after 1 drink. After several months of trying "mexican" places I was already convinced that you couldn't find a place in which they served real traditional mexican food and not Tex-Mex, such as Pappasitos. I tried this place and I felt completely at home. They have a wide variety of traditional dishes prepared the mexican way. This means soft corn tortillas, charro beans, carne en su jugo, enchiladas, caldo tlalpeño, everything just like in Mexico. It's a great place to watch soccer games at night. Great variety of mexican beers too. The prices are good, getting 2 dishes and lemonade could be as low as 20 bucks including tip. Good value for food for the most part. Typical Mexican food but nothing to write home about. Wouldn't mind giving it a four star rating except for the bar service. As with most people on here we had issues with the horrible bartender. He served a normal drink in a double drink glass. When we complained he poured the drink back into the single drink glass. At that point there was no value given he had already diluted the drinks. When we pointed this out he told us it was our responsibility to ask for a single glass glass. I offered to disprove this by driving him to every restaraunt close by to show him that no one else insisted on this nonsense. He declined at this point. About a year ago we were in Houston for a week or so. We were staying across the street, but didn't go to Paparruchos until the last day. There are so many restaurants to choose from. PAPARRUCHOS, WISH WE HAD GONE SOONER. We sat at the bar and had the salsa and chips. I started on the red salsa, When my husband said the verde was good. I've never had salsa verde that I liked. When it comes to Paparruchos, don't go by the appearances. They might not have 4 identical chairs, especially on the patio, plates might be a bit damaged, but food is always fresh, guacamole is absolutely delicious, they'll be quick, and they'll make sure you can watch the sports event you want to watch (eg. the Euro 2016!). Salsa classes are also on :) It is not a posh place for sure. I still give them 5 stars because of the comfy feeling I have every time I go there. And that is quite often. Some of their dishes remind me of my grandma's winter dishes. Believe me, Transylvanian and Mexican cuisine do not have that much in common...try the beef fajitas - with corn :) read more

First things first; parking is mandatory, non-complimentary valet. I don't have a problem with valet parking but the stand was half way down the shopping center. For $10 I don't expect to break a sweat walking to the front door. When leaving I just requested my keys since I had all but walked back to my car anyway. I met up on the patio with a party of 2 who had already arrived. After waiting for a more than adequate amount of time I had to flag down a server. Meanwhile, the patio began to fill up with soccer enthusiasts who felt it appropriate to turn around in their booth and talk/cheer loudly a matter of inches from my ear. We moved to an isolated table. I had a large premium margarita (2 actually) that was pretty good and the tacos carbon were better than average at the price point. The chips were too thick for my liking, but the salsa i did try was god as well. We ordered a round of shots that were mixed well, but obviously watered down (they were shaken with ice to be fair). When I received the bill I was initially shocked. Upon closer inspection I found an 18% gratuity was automatically added (keep in mind this was a party of 3), which I may or may not have given had I had a choice (I'm a 15% minimum tipper unless you really mess up). The service wasn't very attentive, but everything was right and the server was nice enough. All in all I didn't hate the place but the service/policies took a possibly (slightly) above average restaurant down a notch. read more

They were also an off color but I figure it wasn't cooked like the first time coming here. Once coming home my stomach started hurting. Came to eat dinner with my dad. This was my first time being in Houston, and we chose this place for our dinner. I chose to get one of the cheapest things on the menu (tacos), both me & my dad got these. We both got one drink ( margarita and beer) and I got a water on the side. Since when is water not free ? They charged us $3 for water. Next, when it was time for the bill, the waitress read off our receipt and it came out to $68 which made no sense because we purposely chose the cheapest items on the menu which were $13. Finally AFTRR we pay, I get the itemized receipt and we were charged a $9 gratuity for two people. Then, we were charged $9.30 as a large party for two people ???? Also, my dad accidentally left 12 cents as a tip and the lady knew that they already took out gratuity and she said you're only leaving 12 cents ?? I had a horrible experience, and I do NOT recommend. Make sure to SEE the itemized receipt because they will over charge you. read more
