Got here around 10:50 p.m. tonight and seated myself at the bar. I waited about 10 minutes before someone gave me attention. The female bartender was too busy chatting up this male patron to serve me, so I sat there patiently, listening to the karaoke singers. Finally, a bartender asked me if I wanted to order, so I asked for a drinks menu and then placed an order for a Malibu pineapple with cranberry. This was the largest Malibu pineapple and cranberry I have ever been served. I decided to request a song and asked the wait time, the DJ told me that it depends on how long it takes for her to find the song. I noticed she had two other songs already in the queue ahead of my request so I figured I'd be up in about 15 minutes. Took a little bit longer than that but I was enjoying my massive drink and the other singers so I was okay with it. I performed my song, finished my drink, paid and left. This place has a special corner in my heart because it was one of the first bars I visited when I first moved to Houston. I like the decor, the open patio area, and the general set up of it. I visited this place on a Friday night because we wanted some food and drinks, but didn't want to go far from home or break the bank. Paparruchos fit that bill and I'm really glad we came here. First, the salsas that they offer are amazing. we got chips and salsa, but we received three different salsas, and all of them were amazing. I think one of them was a "secret" salsa so ask for that when you visit. I ordered quesadillas. They were not anything special, but just a standard quesadilla done right. The meant was juicy, the cheese was gooey, and the tortilla was slightly crispy. Also, the quesadilla was huge. I love quesadillas so I would totally get this again. We went on a Saturday night. They charge $10 for parking on the weekend. This is a hole in the wall type of place and is older looking inside, so I don't think charging for parking is appropriate. The service was not bad. They give you chips snd salsa but the salsa is in a ramekin, so it's like 3 oz. I thought that was weird. I ordered the fajitas. They were not bad. I had worse. We had a few drinks. The margaritas were pretty good too. They have a DJ and show videos on a screen, but the music was very loud for a restaurant, so it was hard to hear each other. To make things worse they apparently sell hookah but it is nowhere in the menu that I noticed. There were children in the restaurant, so this was a big red flag. To finish the night off they brought check and charged an automatic 18% gratuity on a party of four. They did not tell me so when I paid the check, I ended giving them a tip on top of the tip that was already included. I would give it negative stars if I could. Went there on Saturday with a large group of folks and was told they would combine checks. When we said there several different people and we need them separate, they said no. That should have been a sign. Got hat handled and then we waited over an hour for our food, which was straight horrible. We got the check and paid the bill that already included the 18% gratuity, based on what I am reading here is pretty standard for this joint. We left the next day and drove back to San Antonio from Houston. A couple of days later, we found an extra $20 exactly added to our charge. I call back and speak with Lalo, who was handed the phone mid-sentence and tell him what happened. He said I can bring in my ticket and card and he would fix it. Said I live in SA and that was not possible. He then said there was nothing I can do for you. He said he would give me his personal cell and if I texted him MY PERSONAL BANK ACCOUNT he would fix it. You cant handle my meal receipt, yet I should text you my account number? Nope not happening. Long story short I told him if he didn't fix it, I would contest the whole charge with my bank. We were referred to this spot by our hotel. So we had LALO to help us and it suck . He tried to charge us a extra drink that we never received and charged us a gratuity fee. I went to dinner here with 4 other friends. We weren't really impressed. They only gave us one thing of chips and salsa for the entire table. We asked twice for them to bring us more.. which they didn't bring out until our food came out too. The salsa had no flavor so we loaded it up with tobasco and that made it better. My chimichanga was actually amazing.. which is why I'm giving this place 2 stars instead of 1. Two of my friends said their dishes were cold. My margarita was good. When the server brought us our checks he immediately grabbed my ticket after I wrote the tip and then asked my friend with the pen if he was done, he said no and then the waiter said well will you give it to them (referring to everyone else). Literally nothing at this place makes sense. You pull up and there's NO parking anywhere. This place forces you to pay $10 to valet, there's nowhere else to go unless you park across the street (which by the way you WILL get towed as my friend did). I asked for a table for 10 and the manager told me all the tables were reserved for the entire night. I look around and there is NOBODY in this place but I see about 5 big top of tables with Reserved signs. I asked about those tables... some of which weren't scheduled to come in until 9 or 10. Did I mention it's 7PM? I literally see the manager turning people away with parties of 4 or less. Again... this makes no sense. Instead of using the tables and setting them up later... they sit empty for HOURS. Anyway... manager pulls some random tables together in a corner and sets us up there. We open the menu... food is not cheap. All margaritas are $10... including the house. We ask if we can purchase a pitcher and they say... Pitchers are not normally available but since there are about 5 margs in a pitcher, it will be $50. ARE YOU SERIOUS? Yes... yes they were. I order a Don Julio and go to the restroom which is COMPLETELY flooded because the toilets are stopped up. NOBODY is tending to it or cares. Anyway... I guess nobody mentions that this place turns into a Latin night club which is probably why those tables are reserved all night and why they force you to valet. This is honestly the ONLY cool part about coming here. MOST IMPORTANTLY... WATCH YOUR TAB. These people are so dishonest. I was charged over $300 on a tab I NEVER reviewed, never signed and never tipped on. I went back a few days later to get an itemized receipt because once the charge posted to my account it went from $250 to $300. A $50 tip, really?! They were UNABLE to produce my itemized receipt or my signed receipt proving that I actually authorized the charge or tip. I ended up disputing the charge with my bank because the managers were useless. Also... when i went up there for said receipts... SOMEONE else was there speaking to a manager about being overcharged. Coincidence? Also... my friend said she came here once and bought a bottle of Grey Goose (we all know what that tastes like, right). I ordered the shredded chicken enchilada. I actually thoroughly enjoyed it for the most part. It was a great portion. The only thing I would suggest is seasoning the chicken a little more and maybe serving it with sour cream. I also had a mango frozen daiquiri. That was delicious! Prices were good as well. My main complaint was the drinks came in regular and large sizes. We asked for a mango daiquiri and she brought them out and they were huge. We questioned what size they were. Long story short, she brought us large drinks; thus charged us a large price. Price wasn't bad, but i feel we should have been asked what size drink we wanted instead of assuming. This place has some of the best Mexican food, no, it's not Tex-Mex, it's Mex-Mex. Monclova is the city and Coahuila is the state. The Taco Pirata is out of this world. Love the queso enchiladas too. On the appetizer side, I'd stay away from Champinones Huerfanos. The regular salsa they bring to the table is flavorful, not spicy. They have a hot one, but all you taste is hot, no flavors. The Platillo Monclova is also an excellent choice and was enough food for two or to take some home. The outdoor patio is nice. It overlooks Sage, is covered, and has both heaters and fans to be used as the weather changes. If you like a good margarita, theirs can't be beat. During happy hour (4-7), the large which normally goes for $10 is only $5. When I say large, I do mean large. Two of these and you had better have a designated driver. I almost hate putting a review here on them as they seem to still be an unknown entity so it is never crowed, but I would truly hate to see them leave. Give this place a shot. If you are looking for Tex-Mex, you will be disappointed, but if you are looking for Mexican. The prices are reasonable, the service is ok, and the employees are all great. read more
