This place deserves five stars for many reasons even if the food is not the best Mexican food you've ever had...although it's pretty damn good. First they understand great service from the moment you enter until the moment you leave. The place absolutely looks like a Mexican restaurant should look. They must offer over a hundred menu choices. It's amazing what Mexicans can do with just a few food items. They give you an enormous amount of food. I ended up bringing home half of my sizzling enchiladas. And it tasted great. My wife had fajitas and it too was an excellent choice. The place is always busy and it's easy to see why. Went to Papas and Beer restaurant on tunnel Road in Ashville NC. It was an awesome experience. They have a salsa bar as soon as you enter the door. 9 different choices to choose from. Mild to flamethrower with habanero. You can get as much salsa as you want too. They start you off with bean dip and chips. The portions are HUGE so don't go unless you are hungry, planning on taking some home, or want to share. Drinks are the same way. Go big or go home. I hope the guy whose picture I took doesn't mind. I needed an example of a margarita. My Brother in law with his thirst quenching 24 oz beer made me laugh. That wasn't even the large! They sell a 60 ounce beer for those that don't want to ask their waiter for a refill. Overall taste was great, the decor was interesting and this included a large outside eating area. I ordered food and they tried to tell me I call the wrong number, when I confirmed initially which location I was calling. Oh, how I adore this place--except for the unnecessarily rude manager (Brevard Rd), apparently moonlighting as a drill sergeant at the hostess stand. Ten-hut! I'd like to believe that baleful sneer was his attempt at a smile. Hope springs eternal. I ordered the burrito made with "steak," which turned out to be a stringy, fatty chuck in disguise (seemed to me). The waiter, an absolute gem, swapped it out graciously. So far, so good. Then came the check. The waiter politely explained I'd need to pay at the register. All routine--until Sergeant Manager demanded to know why I disliked his entrée. I answered honestly (because it was, to me, stringy, fatty chuck, not steak). Wrong move. Cue sneer, suppressed rage, and a scolding better suited for a toddler who colored on the wall. Ever hear of diplomacy? A seasoned restaurateur might say, "Sorry you didn't enjoy the first dish--how was the replacement? Thanks for giving us another chance." Not this guy. Instead: curt, rude, imperious, and a clear "thanks for your money, now march out." If it was indeed "steak", I apologize. But it was tasteless. Fatty. Stringy. Between the Hendo location and the Asheville location the Asheville location runs circles around the other(s). This location has a really big bar area, we always try to sit at the bar. Way faster service ( however, table service is fantastic as well ). The food is always fresh and hot items are served hot while cold items are served cold. Chips are always fresh and the bean dip too. Great salsa bar with a few really hot salsas. One well over looked "restaurant" thing is pre-bussing tables, here everyone, every employee lend a hand in this. We've never had dishes pile up, win win. We drive past the Hendersonville location and drive 12 miles to this location. read more

I have been going here for around 10 years and I don't know what has changed but the last time I went the food tasted awful. They increased the prices and decreased the quality. Overcharged me for food that made me feel sick after and they honestly did not care when I told them. Visiting with the baby of the family, our daughter decided she wanted us to try Papas and Beer. From the street it looks like a hole in the wall dive. Once inside, it's much bigger than its external street view appearance. The parking lot was packed so we knew the food had to be good, and it was. The server was a bit absent minded in that some of our appetizer order was never delivered. That ended up being okay because portion sizes of the main dishes were HUGE. They removed the undelivered items from the bill at the end of the visit. Yes, I would recommend this place in a heartbeat. Make sure your eyes and your stomach are on the same page before you order. Keto Options Available! We were hungry for some Mexican after a long day of touring the Biltmore Estate. I was really craving a place with a salsa bar that also could accommodate our keto diet. The complimentary bean dip is a great introduction and not keto but certainly appreciated! The salsa bar was awesome and I made two trips to drench my food in several of the different ones. The labeling of the salsas wasn't great but I loved the hot pumpkin and the one with avocado. I got the Saltillo salad which was basically fajitas mixed into a salad. It was not bad but not great. I'll take the option though as it provided a huge salad for my only meal of the day. There were way too many onions though but I was able to put them aside. The disappointment came when receiving the check. Although not noted on the menu, they charged me extra for getting steak on my salad when the menu shows you choose between chicken and steak and there shows no upcharge for the steak. On top of that, there is an undisclosed credit card fee. So, just about $5 there in unexpected charges. I didn't say anything as my wife and I had had a great day celebrating our 25th anniversary and I certainly didn't want to sour the mood. I got home and noticed that we have a Papas and Beer close to us here in Georgia. Yeah, I'll go for that salsa bar and this time won't be surprised by the add ons. read more

This restaurant is running a scam, the menus in the restaurant say $23.99. The online menu says $23.99. When you call they tell you $28.99, when you dine in they charge you $32.99 . There are NO prices on any menus with anything except the $23.99. If you pay with a card it's an extra $1.95, they will "wave" that charge if you pay cash. I have repeatedly called to speak with the owner and management and still haven't gotten a response. I have photos and videos of the employees openly lying to me. I was getting salsas from the bar when I noticed someone walk to my right, stop, and linger about 3ft away. Then I heard the staff who'd just taken my order, behind me say something I couldn't understand and men laughing. Probably the most extensive menu I've ever seen in a Mexican restaurant, or possibly any restaurant for that matter. If you can't find something that sounds good on this menu, you must be a really picky eater. I couldn't decide between about 20 items, but ended up ordering the enchiladas mole poblano. They were really good, like a traditional mole but with more kick. The portions are large. The rice side was the best I've had in any Mexican restaurant (usually it's just bland rice, but theirs had some real taste). We'll definitely be back.
