The ice cream there is so delicious I went there when I was 3 or 5 but I recommend you get some after they reopen.

Appears to be on its way out of business, and to that I say good riddance. Doesn't deserve to be called a deli.

Darling little retro spot that will really make you feel like you've stepped back in time. I actually loved being in this place and although The owner (older, friendly gentleman) was really struggling with remembering our orders, in the end he got it right and everything came out very good tasting and fresh. It wasn't great. It definitely wasn't the best. I so wanted it to be good... to be better than it was. Don't go if you don't have the time. Service is slow. And know what you're going to order. Be prepared. There is no small talk or niceties. If you want lettuce, tomato, onion or whatever you better speak up. He won't ask if you want any. And if you've never eaten there you won't know if it comes with or not. And when the menu says your sandwich comes with a SIDE of potato salad or macaroni salad... Umm... no. I've been drawn to this establishment since I drove by on a recent nostalgic visit to my mom's hometown. It's not somewhere that we could even visit in my childhood since they opened up after my grandmother moved away, but nevertheless the name "Papa" holds special meaning. They only take cash which is not convenient for me at all. Ever heard of Square? ...they have free credit card processing on your phone or tablet. Ugh. I didn't have quite enough cash with me so my dear companion had to cover part of my expense (a bit embarrassing). Anyway, the gyro sandwich was substantial size, and quite tasty. The service was pretty quick and noninvasive. ..we were able to have a conversation without being interrupted by the wait staff. Wow, while trying to write a little something about this place, I realize that there really wasn't ANYTHING remarkable about this place :/ I ordered 'The Crown Point' or something like that which was supposed to have Roast Beef and Ham on Rye. Sammich showed up and it was a plain 'ol Roast Beef sandwich... good, tasty, missing ham though. I wasn't gonna send it back or anything but, I still wondered how that happened. Do they not know what's on their sandwiches? I mean, if they were like REALLY busy.... OK OK, forgivable but, it was us and ONE other table of TWO. I didn't notice anyone going from making food to answering the phone and handling the cash register then BACK to finishing making our food. I even used the munchkin as an excuse so 'WE' can watch them lol. It's also been a couple days since we went, no tummy troubles so far, so we're probably A-OK. My fiance got the hamburger, it looked like it could've been good but I don't think I had a bit of it. If I did... it wasn't memorable lol. The one thing I think was nice was that one of the people that worked there gave the munchkin a free small ice cream cone - then when she didn't like the flavor, he went ahead and switched it out for Vanilla. Unfortunately, that nice little gesture brought us to the ice cream freezer thing... Grossness. Looked dirty and messy, with the tubs just kinda in there, tops haphazardly stacked (if I can even call it that) beside them on the base of the freezer. IDK, maybe it was just an off day for them? Had heard great things about this place but really not impressed. Asked the woman working a few simple questions and was given a disgusted look and told "it's on the menu." (It wasn't.) The onion rings were burnt, the gyro was overcooked, and the Reuben was served on soggy white bread, not rye. It came with a large serving of meat, which was tasty, but the sandwich fell apart on the soggy bread. Really disappointed and likely won't come back again. read more

This shop is a combination of a small general store and a restaurant. It fits in with the rest of the buildings on the Crown Point Square. The restaurant cuisine could be described as two parts American, one part Greek. I have tried many foods from their menu, and I would say that the restaurant owner has developed a good understanding of what makes foods taste good over the years. The gyros sandwich is their specialty. And rightly so: I have to say that it is the best gyros that I have ever eaten anywhere in all my years. No one else seems to have perfected it as well as they have. I've always thought of this as the perfect restaurant to take a girl out on a date, and after seven years, my opinion remains unchanged. I've never found any better. The size and ambiance are just about right for that. It is also a good place for a family dinner and has an excellent little ice cream parlor as well. Finally, it is possible to save a trip to the local store by eating there, as it has a good variety of canned foods, candy, soda, cheeses, and meats for sale in its deli section. read more

If you ever come to Crown Point, this is one place I would say you HAVE to visit. Papa's deli is a privately owned restaurant/deli right on the downtown square. This place bring back so many memories from childhood. 1. where my pizza addiction originated 2. where I played super Mario Bro. for the first time...and became addicted 3. would get very upset if we didn't go to Papa's Deli before or after dance class (and I was NOT a bratty child) The gyros are supposed to be good here too. Papa might have a curmudgeonly countenance, but he really is happy to see you in his store. Really. He is. I've been visiting Papa's Deli since I was a wee one. After a day with my family at Lemon Lake or of walking up and down every aisle at the three floor antique shop down the street, Papa's offered some tasty sustenance in a pretty old-school setting. Luckily, Papa's is still around, serving Crown Point locals and the historic courthouse visitors with a wry smile. Really, the food is nothing spectacular. But you can get good spanikopita if you want! Or gyros or subs or pizza puffs or Italian beef or a myriad of other standard hot dog stand fare, with a few Greek options thrown in for good measure. I love that Papa stocks small bags of Jay's products so I can get my Oke-doke cheese popcorn or some BBQ chips. He also has pretty much all of the Sunkist pop flavors, which always makes me smile for some reason. The deli counter offers meats and cheeses and some prepared Greek delicacies you can take home to enjoy, and there is a modest selection of imported canned goods and olive oils for purchase. Grumpy Papa also offers hand-dipped ice cream, including Blue Moon, which always wigged me out when I was little (what IS that flavor, anyway??). Now whenever I see it, I think of fun trips to Papa's Deli and begging for quarters for the antique candy & toy machines. Luckily, those great antiques are still in the store right alongside the old, old popcorn vending machine. Not quite sure how old that stuff is, but I have been tempted to try it! Papa's is a great little place to visit if you're in Crown Point. Stop in for a snack or pick up some treats on your way to the park. My husband ventured in one recent Saturday when we had a craving for a gyro. Living in Crown Point, there are not a lot of gyro places. Our favorite is Munster gyros, but did not feel like driving that far. I must say we were a little leery of this place, it looks like you went back in time. But very clean! We ordered gyros and they were very very good! Nice spicy meat and excellent tzaziki sauce. They put lettuce, onion, and tomato on it too along with a pepperoncini. Very good! What a place! First and foremost, Papa was so amazingly friendly and courteous. After ordering ice cream and informing him I had to run to the ATM, he said not to worry about it, but thankfully I finally was allowed to pay. Then we got the gyros and French fries which were honestly the best I've ever had. He perfectly cuts the onions and the pita is drizzled with the right amount of olive oil. This place doesn't look like much from the outside and even inside, but wow you will not be disappointed. Go and support this business! read more

Papa is the sweetest and the gyros are HUGE end to die for. No other place around here makes them as authentic !! All the sandwiches are big and made with fresh ingredients. The shop is also very cute and had unique/old fashioned pictures hanging on the walls. You get your money's worth. read more

Papa's Deli was the first place I stopped in after I moved to Crown Point. The owner couldn't have been nicer and welcomed us into the neighborhood. It is like stepping back in time; I love the feel of the little shop. I also buy my feta cheese from him- in big chunks, WAY cheaper than at the grocery store. I loved the retro feel of this place. I really did. I sat down to eat and was grossed out by the condition. The coolers needed a deep clean they were caked up with gunk and food, the floors and decorations we're also pretty crusty and the signs were all old and falling apart. The pictures on the windows are what I thought I was getting when ordering a beef sandwich but it's actually just a lot of meat on white bread like what you make at home. So I was a little disappointed and the outside of the sandwich is warm and the inside is cold so it wasn't settling well with my stomach. Try for yourself I suppose because it is a cool place. I also didn't like that I didn't know my total. She just said the money in my hand would do I gave it to her and that was that. I had no idea if I over paid or under paid or what but that was just weird to me, no receipt nothing. I have been eating at Papa's Deli ever since I was old enough to eat. That's about 26 years now. Angelo (aka. Papa) may "seem" like a grumpy old fart but , the last reviewer is right, don't let him scare you. I was turned onto Papa's by my lat aunt, Jean. Angelo was her best friend so eating there was a regular thing for us. It's a great place to have a Gyro. Sadly, I moved to Louisville, KY about 9 years ago. Everytime I go up to visit my father I have to get a Gyro. Not just any Gyro. Papa's gyro. You will not find a better one anywhere in the Greater Chicago area. I usually bring a couple home with me. (Try to find a good gyro in Louisville. HA!) Anyways, I would not rather eat anywhere else with anyone else. When Papa is not busy, he's more than glad to sit and share some stories. Although anymore these days, it's me telling him more stories than vice versa because I have heard all of his at this point. lol. So maybe the 5 stars is because I feel at home there. But go. Stopped by while antiquing in the area. Sandwiches smelled bad and side salad had a gross film on it. The fried items tasted of burned old oil. The whole family was not willing to eat our meal. We threw it away and went somewhere else. Place has a feel that the owner is old and "thrifty" and keeps his food a little too long. read more

papas deli is overall just an amazing place. amazing service. the guy that owns it is very sweet and nice, he's always checking up on you and making nice conversations. the food is so good and is very fresh. the ice cream is very good and there's a good variety of choices. for the amount and quality of food that you get, it's a very good price! make sure next time that you're in crown point, to make a stop at papas deli! it's very worth it! read more

I wouldn't trust this place for food. Went in to buy a drink, noticed they are still selling "Avengers" Dr. Peppers. That movie has been out of theaters for about 7 months! I had to look at four different drinks until I found something that wasn't expired. Lame. read more
