Terrific food - SEVERELY understaffed - breakfast took us 90 minutes for a party of 2. Only 2 servers on the floor (who also were hostess and cashier). I ate my meal in 10 minutes - the other 80 minutes were spent WAITING, especially to pay. And forget about asking for hot sauce or a coffee refill! I asked if someone had called in sick and the girl said "No, were just really busy." It was busy, but come on! Ridiculous! On a Sunday morning there is no excuse.... Shame, because the food was good, staff friendly, and prices reasonable, but I will never go back because of the time wasted...

    Good times!

I hat the Irish Bennie. Dad the sausage and gravy. Homemade corned beef hash? If not it was damm good. Dad loved his sausage and gravy. Large servings. Both came with home fries and dads came with eggs. Home fries overdone but I ont like them much so they don't count.

A total great experience!!…read more Welcomed upon arrival and seated promptly with a reservation (suggested). Welcoming decor and staff was friendly throughout visit. The food! Meatball appetizer, big and rich in flavor with meatballs not too soft or hard. Great with warm bread that was provided. Main course was beyond big and easily two meals on each platting. Chicken parm was tender and nicely seasoned with pasta side. I had a special of peppers and onions in a spicy red sauce with crumbled sausage and bucatini as the pasta. It was cooked well and had a nice warm spice, but not over powering heat, easily two meals. Drink prices were market priced with a wine $ 8.00 for a good pour. Server was personable and attentive throughout our visit. It would appear the kitchen is small and staffed accordingly. I hear they limit take out orders when very busy and best to call ahead for complete info on a weekend. Overall great experience and will visit again.

It's a big open room with a moderately sized and full-service bar. The food is well-made traditional Italian with generous portions. We've tried a lot of the menu and haven't been disappointed. The meatballs are great. The wait staff are attentive, conscientious and clearly care about your experience. This is a family place, but dress appropriately and only bring your kids if they're well behaved. This isn't a place for unruly toddlers or crying babies. This building was formerly The Open Door Mission (now on Warren Street). Staying in the area over the weekend, I decided to head over to Giovanni Fresco for takeout. I have a sweet spot for fresh pasta. There was a short line of customers when I arrived here. They had a Saturday which was a half tray of Penne ala Vodka, 6 meatballs and dinner rolls for $39.99. The place is geared for takeout with a few tables here if you want to eat in. However, I decided on the Fresh Pappadelle with Meat Sauce ($12.99 plus tax), 2 Meatballs ($4 plus tax), Traditional Arancini ($5 plus tax), Fried Mac & Cheese ($5 plus tax) and Sfogliatelle (3 for $10 plus tax). I figured this would be enough food for a big dinner for myself. The owner Giovanni explained the homemade foods offered at his business. Back at the house, I enjoyed my haul for dinner. The fresh pasta dish with meat sauce with the meatballs in thick marinara were still nice and hot. The pappardelle noodles were cooked just right, the sauces were hearty and the meatballs (not big) had a very soft moist texture. The Traditional Arancini was a deep fried rice ball filled with mozzarella cheese and marinara sauce on the side. The Fried Mac & Cheese ball was very good too. The Sfogliatelle for dessert each had a firm flaky pastry shell filled with a sweet vanilla ricotta filling, great with my espresso. This is one stop I would definitely return to so I can try out their other Italian dishes such as the lasagna, homemade fettuccine alfredo, and penne ala vodka.

Opened by Christian Rath in September 2023, it features dishes learned from his long career in food service. Spargel is the German word for Asparagus. This is a comprehensive tour of authentic German cusines from many regions of Germany. Just explore the menu options on the website. We started with a variety of Paulaner draft beers at the bar with the knowledgeable, Beau. Our server at our table was Kelly L. She was very helpful explaining the different dishes and provided excellent service. We started with two of their famous suppe (soup) - Spargelcremesuppe - gream of asparagus w/ garlic croutons ($8.50) and the most popular seasonal Cream of Yellow Chatrelle Mushroom Suppe w/ bacon & onion ($15.50). Unique to us and delicious. Dinners were trio of wild game sausages-wild boar, rabbit, & elk served w/homefries, red cabbage, & ligonberry sause ($34.50), Schweinelende-pan-seared pork tenderloins w/yellow chantrelle sauce, potato croquettes, and bacon wrapped green beans ($36.50), Gebratene Schweine Haxe-pork shank slow roasted with dunckel (dark) beer sauce w/ potato dumplings & sauerkraut ($35). The last dinner was the Bavarian Sampler Tour of German Cusine for Two - 12 items on this platter ($80). Our party of five could have shared this dish. It was Wunderbar! Spargel serves authentic & unique dinners along with the familiar such as Rouladen, Schnitzels, & Goulash. Desserts were creme brulee Grand Manier ($12.50) & apple strudel w/ warm vanilla sauce ($9.50). Their online menu is a must see before a visit. Outstanding meals & excellent service. Danke to Kelly L., Beau, Christian, and chefs. Open: Wednesday - Sunday: 4:00 pm - 9:00 pm Nick & Liz, Judy, Shannon & Todd GACA Albany, NY USA

Our waiter was super attentive and even though it took some time for the food to come out, I think given the quality of everything we ate, it was worth it. I got the raspberry mint mojito cocktail which was delicious and I pinched a sip or two of kid's lemonade made from fresh lemons, perfect level of sweetness. We tried the sweet potato pakoras and lumpia and the trio of house made dips (we liked the green mint-e one best). Everything was tasty, including the sauces that came up with them. Our kids shared the ramen which they split into two large bowls that didn't even look like a split dish given how much it was. My wife got the spare ribs which melted off the bones and had great flavor. The scallop dish I ordered came with six scallops that were a good size and also came with some gnocci, a delicious and unique sauce, and an unusual lobster with veggie type of ceviche salad accoutrement. I have the sense that the menu changes regularly here. The chef/owner came out and greeted us after the meal to ask how everything was and we could honestly respond that it was our best meal of the week. Subsequently we tried to sample many items from their desert menu and again Bastard did not disappoint. Surprisingly the "S'Mores," a more adult take on the kid's classic, was one of our favorites. Given the unique take on a variety of globally inspired dishes and great attention to detail, I would love to try Bastard again the next time I'm in the area.
