Came here yesterday with friends. My friend ordered the braised pork belly banh mi and the pork belly was completely unseasoned and flavorless. My tofu banhmi was seasoned nicely, so unsure if they just forgot to season the pork belly? Otherwise it was good, the sweet potato fries and sauce that come with the banh mi are nice. Finally found a Vietnamese restaurant that does the spring rolls (cha gio) with some amount of decency. Most of the other place I've tried so far are usually filled with some form of pork that ends of being dry, grainy and tasteless without dipping it in fish sauce . But at least this place flavors the filling correctly and adds in shrimp as well. Their House Noodle Wonton Egg Soup is certainly filling and good. I mean its really hard to mess up shrimp tempura, pork/shrimp wontons and BBQ pork. Literally it's a dish of all favorites combined into one. The salt & pepper fried tofu was just okay, wish it had a bit more flavor though. Yes I agree this place is a bit more "Americanized" from the looks of the menu for the area that it serves. I haven't tried their pho or other Viet dishes for completeness yet, but they're on my radar. At least get the spring rolls, highly recommended. read more

This business does not treat customers well and will do everything to keep your money, even when a refund is warranted. My past two orders of the crispy honey chicken (takeout) were burnt so badly that I had to throw most of it away. The first time I shrugged it off as a possible one-off bad meal, but the second in a row prompted me to call and ask for a refund (for the second). Here's how that experience went. The person who answered was seemingly working at the front desk, and I asked if could speak with a manager. He asked why, so I explained what had happened and that I would like to let the place know what was going on (so hopefully they could correct it for future meals) and to get a refund. After he spoke with someone (I assume the manager) he got back on the call and said the manager was too busy to talk to me. After a little small talk with the front desk person, he found my order and said he initiated a refund, and that it would take a few days for me to see it. Further, he was going to check with the kitchen staff and get back with me. I thanked him for his help and we hung up. A few minutes later, I got a call from another individual who I assumed was the manager given his more assertive/aggressive tone. He began making excuses as to why he couldn't give a refund and offered to make me a new meal. I said I didn't want a new meal, just a refund. He refused, and basically said their system didn't support it. I didn't believe him and stated that all other places of business have the ability to give refunds to customers. He then accused me of being someone who gets takeout, then lies about its quality to get a refund and screw over the restaurant. I tried to assure him that definitely was NOT what I was doing, but he kept talking over me and didn't want to listen. After a bit more arguing I said, OK, given how you've treated me, if you aren't willing to provide a refund then I would initiate a claim with my bank. He then asserted I was "threatening" him. (Seriously?) The call ended soon after. Be ware of this place. The food can sometimes be good, but management is awful. read more

The shrimp in the curry tasted good, but they leave the tails on in the PHO, and in the Curry so that was annoying. The Ribeye steak cubes & fried rice was OUTSTANDING! This is my second time here on a Sunday. The food was adequate and served fairly quickly. The service was good and was given a fresh meal. The chicken was tender and filled our cravings! Be better off going across the street to the Izakaya Restaurant. The service at Papaya is not friendly at all. Living across the street we placed a to go order for a Vietnamese coffee, which came back half filled with a side of rude service. You would think any type of order would be beneficial for them. This isn't the only occasion we've had issues with them. We've tried going in for dinner 45 minutes before they were scheduled to close and we were informed they were no longer sitting people for dinner. Sucks for them because we were on a time constraint any ways for a movie across the way so 45 minutes was plenty of time. We found the hours to be inconsistent. When we have ate there we have found the food to be sub par, reason why we recommend any other place then this one. read more

A bit expensive but I like it that they have vegetarian pho with veggie broth. Very difficult to find in Seattle area. $14 for pho is expensive though in my opinion. I would recommend the papaya salad with shrimp. The shrimp is just divine the way they grill it. And the salad is delicious. Very big portion. The food is good if you're looking for a night out. They have good ambience as well and seems to have good hygiene. I took 1 star off because we were dining during covid and expected them to practice social distancing. They did practice it at first as we sat but once the restaurant started filling up they sat a couple right behind us with less then a feet of distance and no barriers. Wtf! In Renton, the absence of quality Vietnamese cuisine is readily apparent. When I am lazy and wanna save gas $$$, the only real choice for a rice dish albeit at a upper price point is Papaya. I have gone here enough times to fill up my punch card and get a free entree. My favorite dish of all time is the Garlic Steak Cubes and steamed rice. The appropriate Vietnamese term for this dish is "Bo Luc Lac" commonly called shaken beef. It is simply a dish of beef cubes marinated and cooked with onions then topped on a bed of lettuce strips, pickled carrots and daikon. Another gem I just discovered today: Bone in Chicken and Glass noodles. Authentic flavored broth; nothing like the standard Pho we all are used to. Lastly, I was amazed by their custom made chili paste which contains their special blend of chili oil paste with lemongrass. Try it next time you eat your rice or soup! I spoke to the manager/staff and they did acknowledge that they flavor and adjust their food to the general crowd. I can understand their business decision here and am happy to see that at least for the few of us looking for unique Viet flavors, there are still offerings that satisfy that appetite. Considering a drive to Chinatown and back, I am still better off eating here saving ca$h and time. read more

First visit to Papaya Vietnamese Cafe, and our experience was outstanding. After visiting our dentist office, we had a hunger for good Ox-Tail Soup and the closest place was Papaya Cafe. Previously, I read numerous reviews and decided this was the place to check out. So glad we did. We both ordered the Ox-Tail Pho, but could've probably shared one order. OK, the rest was coming home. The broth is one of the best tasting pho broths we've tasted In the various Vietnamese restaurants we've visited. Add sliced Jalapeño peppers, some fresh Basil leaves, Bean sprouts, Hoisin sauce & Sriracha sauce and dive in! So, so good. Our waiter/server Minh (sp?) and he was most gracious, courteous & constantly checked on us to make sure we were happy with our order. Great service. As we were leaving, I stated we would be back, without a doubt. I'd really like to try the Fresh Mango Spring Rolls. Sounds Dee-lish! Restaurant is located at the Renton Landing, across the street from Five Guys Hamburgers & the Seattle Seahawks Pro Shop. Parking can be difficult, but we were lucky to find a stall close by. Super clean, the magical touches are great (and have great kids' appeal), 2 sweet flatscreens, the format is unique, the lady who brings your food out was friendly, and the guy manning the cashier was really cool & friendly. Got me the tofu baguette: totally love it. it tasted fresh and just really good + plus the great sp/yam fries. The thing with people who prefer authentic food, is that they have more limited options for rating higher stars than people who enjoy, yes, authentic but also "average", and everything inbetween, like myself. I don't think I have that authentic "tongue" but it seems to me that this place is a great restaurant and oh my goodness I think I just enjoyed my meal. :) Before you go, I recommend all males to stand in front of the men's mirror out front and all females to do the same for their's. Papaya is one of the few places that has Banh Xeo on its menu, and since that is one of the hubs favorite Vietnamese dishes, I drove to the Landing for takeout recently. We have eaten at Papaya about five times in the past few years, and it is always fresh and delicious. Our takeout choices were also really good this time. We ordered the honey garlic chicken wing appetizer and it was juicy and flavorful with a wet sauce rather than a dry seasoning situation. Too many Vietnamese and Korean restaurants have wing appetizers that are way below standard with minimal flavor and dry meat. Yuck. Not here. Order the wings! We also ordered the chicken potstickers, which were fine but not as outstanding as the wings. The Banh Xeo did not disappoint with it's eggy crepe goodness and heaps of fresh herbs and some vegetables to spread on top. My Pineapple and Sesame Chicken Bahn Mi hit the spot with good flavor, a nice crispy on the outside and soft on the inside roll, and excellent pickled veg inside. I am not sure if they don't bother with jalapeno and mayo on that particular flavor Bahn Mi, but my sandwich didn't have that classic addition, and I missed it. Sure I will take a bite with a jalapeno in it and then end up taking the rest of the jalapeno slices out of my sandwich, but I at least want that first bite. As to COVID compliance, they do have a few seats outdoors so that's good. It looked like tables indoors and out were not crowded together and not every table was occupied but there were not tables marked as "do not use" the way I have seen at other places. Staff wore masks. Takeout hint - there is not much parking right in front of or alongside the restaurant. People park illegally in the passenger drop zone, and I didn't see any enforcement around. I could only find a parking spot the equivalent of about two blocks away. It was still worth it to get takeout at Papaya. Yum! read more

I am a big pho fan and have eaten at the most pho restaurants in the Eastside and in Seattle. I ordered oxtail pho with spicy broth. The most terrible pho I ever ate in my life! The broth was very strange tasting! The oxtail was cooked enough that I had to use a chainsaw to cut the meat off the bones. I order tendon but it came with two small pieces. We stopped by here for some pho on a winter evening. It is located in a shopping plaza right next to an airplane factory so there is no shortage of patrons. There is not bar area but no shortage of drinks. There are some booths but mostly table and chairs. We were promptly seated, served with water and given menus. The staff were nice to us and eager to take our orders. We ordered shrimp and beef pho. Shrimp was the small order and beef the normal (large) sized. Orders came out quickly but not too soon. The condiments were the right amount for each soup. Shrimp was not cleaned properly, it still had the vein in. This took away from the rest of the meal. There were a variety of sauces available on the table. One of the things I liked the most is that they do not assume one cannot use the shop sticks so all the tables have reusable chop sticks. Food was okay, not authentic. Priced well for the portion, location and taste. My biggest dislike for this place is the TVs around the dining room, TVs were loud and distracting. As usual, I got a combination pho. It is a tad pricier than some other places, but they're fairly generous about their meat as well. In fact, it was almost too much meat; I wouldn't have complained if there was a bit more noodle instead. The meatball slices and tendon were large, the steak was not over cooked, and the brisket was soft. Can't complain there. The broth was.....adequate. Not bad, but not that great either. The bean sprouts and other greens didn't look the freshest. I agree with another reviewer that said they look like they were plated beforehand, then left out. Spring rolls were cut into smaller pieces and served with the generic peanut sauce. It was good. Our service was okay too, but we each just ordered a bowl of pho and then one order of spring rolls, so it's not like we needed much attention.
