Every time I visit LA I try to go to Porto's Bakery because it's one of my favorites and a classic, but I decided to switch it up and come here this time. I'm so glad I did! We stopped by this location on our way out of LA and it tried an assortment of sweet and savory pastries. Honestly, I think this is my new bakery spot on my way out of LA!!!! The food is prepared so well and savory, my favorite thing is that everything from the empanadas to the perashkis are stuffed with food. I don't like when restaurants are stingy and you get a crusty exterior with nothing inside, that's not the case here! Like I said, we tried an assortment of things but if I had to pick one sweet and one savory here it is: beef empanada/perashki and Nutella with Oreo pastry. The CHEESE ROLLS are quite possibly the BEST I've had from any bakery here in LA. They are authentically European in design with the perfect balance of sweetness in the filling. There's even a hint of caramel. The way they bake it, the sugar slightly caramelizes on top. It's impeccably delicious! I'll be going back for a baker's dozen very soon. read more

Friendly customer service! Small shop but plenty of goodies. I've had their ponchiks before and have to say that hands down, my favorite is the Nutella! I wanted to try a variety so I also got the dulce de leche and custard ones. Contrary to other reviews, I found the dulce de leche to be too sweet. But that's just my opinion. If I had to describe the dough here, first word that comes to mind is "chewy". I tried some savory items like the beef perashki and chicken empanada and it's definitely different. Not like your traditional empanada at all. I have to say that I'm not a huge fan. My review would be 4 stars for Nutella ponchiks but 3 stars for everything else. My husband and I were in the area running errands and my in-laws had asked us to bring them some paklava while we were out. We live in the South Bay, where there is a veritable dearth of good paklava--or really anything pertaining to Middle Eastern/Levantine/Caucasian food (a gentle reminder that Caucasian in no way, shape or form has anything to do with Western Europe and shouldn't be used as a blanket term for white people)--so we made the decision to pick some up while we were in Glendale. My husband and his family are also odars, so they've never really had Armenian style paklava before (aka, the best form of paklava) or the holy grail of Armenian pastries, ponchiks, and I as an Armenian just simply couldn't allow that. I had to smile a little bit when we walked in because the girl behind the counter greeted my husband in English and looked over at me and then midway through her sentence switched to Armenian and cheerfully said hello. Again, I grew up in the South Bay where there's like 20 Armenians total and I'm related to like half of them, so small things like that still make me happy and catch me off guard. The bakery itself is really cute and they have a giant mural painted on the back wall. We got the biggest tray of paklava they have, some tahn, and a couple Nutella filled ponchiks. They make the ponchiks to order, so it's a small wait, but it's well worth it! The ponchiks are quite literally the best I have ever had in my life. The dough is so nice and airy but still has that good chewy almost donut like texture and you can never go wrong with melted Nutella filling. They do come out piping hot though so you want to be careful while you eat them! The paklava is pre-made and they ask you at the counter if you want them to drizzle honey on it for you. If you're ordering from here and you're an odar, I would caution against the tahn unless you're familiar with it because it's a very salty, savory yogurt drink and it takes some adjusting to--you probably won't like it your first try. In addition to baked goods, they also sell miscellaneous items like masks at the counter with the flags for Armenia and Artsakh on them as well as Armenia and Artsakh flags for your car. I didn't get a chance to try anything else other than the ponchik and paklava but I absolutely want to come back and try the lahmajoon, jingalov hats and ajarski. I decided to visited the bakery on 2/24. The employees were very helpful. You will feel welcomed. I bought 5 donut-like bread filled with Nutella(I apologize for not knowing the proper name of the pastry), and it took about 10 minutes to be ready. They're a bit too sweet, but that can be easily fix with a coffee, or scooping out some Nutella, and I'm sure, upon request, they can use a bit of Nutella. Unfortunately, I was already sick, so I didn't enjoy them... I will visit again when I'm better. I came here before a wedding cuz I was hungry. Upon all the reviews and pictures, I was pretty excited. Settled on two items: an Oreo and meat filled ponchik. They actually make it right when you order, so it might be best to call in. Takes around 10-15m. Besides those, they also had a variety of flavors such as: mushroom, ferrero rocher, pizza, potato, custard , etc so there's something for everyone. Total damage was less than $4 and these things are massive. Almost the size of my forearm or larger. The dough was a bit dense for my taste but the price is pretty good. These didn't knock it out of the park for me, but at least the Oreo wasn't super sweet. I would come here to try the nacho one but I wouldn't drive from oc to here. Okay! So I was craving some sweets before my bbq and ended up here. First off I was told to try the ponchik which is a fried donut with powdered sugar on top/filling of choice. This was the highlight for me, freshly prepared and fried, it had much more flavor than the cheese roll and the custard inside was delicious 8/10. I came here to support the owner after the drama with this place went down....I was standing in the bakery area ready to order but nobody ever showed up to take my order, I decided to order online and went to my car to order....that's disappointing AF! I'm from Detroit and know a good Packzi when I see one these are not it. I was hopeful because everything is made to order so my first bite from the warm one was very decent. By the time I tried another about 2 hours later the whole thing was chewy and not good at all. On top of that staff kept pulling the mask down *dear owners please get staff gloves and breathable masks!* I'm giving a 2 I would give a 2.5 because the packzi was decent for the first 20 mins but the next day it wasn't even edible. OKAY, this is a pretty hidden gem that I found. I read somewhere about ponchiks and so I had to find this place since I LOVE LOVE LOVE donuts! There are Armenian donuts. The bakery is located in a small plaza at the corner of Central and Chevy Chase, and there is a small parking lot. If you can't find parking in the plaza, there is an option of parking across the street...so I don't really understand why people complain about parking because there's plenty of spaces even though you might have to walk a little. Don't worry you can think of it as burning a few calories after eating these heavenly ponchiks! So there are many options of fillings you can choose from but I opted for the nutella filling *(1.50) and the custard filling (1.00). After ordering, it took about 7 minutes for the ponchiks to come out, it was HOT. It was so fresh and smelled great! The nutella one was the first one I had, it was so crunchy and the filling was warm and gooey, amazing! I think it was a little too sweet, but still such an amazing ponchik. Then I tried the vanilla custard one, which was my favorite out of the two. I love the custard taste and the ponchik is still crunchy and delicious! If you put together a beignet, cream puff, and donut...BAM you get a ponchik! My girlfriend, who is not a donut fan and frowns upon the fact that I love donuts so much even approved and loved it! Great little place in the Glendale area. You can miss the place because it is in a little plaza with baskin robbins. Don't let the size of the place fool you because they have so much to offer. The ponchiks are what is well known here. The blueberries and Nutella are a would recommend for those flavors. The blueberries are tart if you don't like it too sweet. The ponchiks are like a donut but not as greasy I would say. We got some churros here as well and you can't go wrong with those. Ponchik Review I've been dying to try a Ponchik for a few months now and finally got the chance when my friend at work picked some up. A Ponchik is basically an Armenian style donut with a filling and dusted with powdered sugar. The Glendale location is probably not in the best area of the City. My friend did mention that she had to wait awhile, only because most of the people had called ahead to place their orders. Note that they make the Ponchiks to order and they are not premade. PRICES: The Original Vanilla Custard Ponchiks are $1.00 each while the Nutella, Reese's, Snickers, Mars Bar, Oreo, and Apricot, and Strawberry Ponchiks are $1.50 each. TASTE: I tried the Vanilla Custard, Nutella, Snickers, and Oreo. Overall, the ones with the chocolate bar inside resemble something you'd probably get at the County Fair. (Deep fried Oreo, Deep Fried Snickers). They were good, but took away from the actual enjoyment of the fried dough itself. I'd stick with the Original Vanilla Custard and Nutella. It has a nice crisp outside and fluffy and chewy inside. Best thing ever! They also have locations in Hollywood (Hollywood Blvd) and North Hollywood (Victory Blvd). If you don't know what a ponchik is, it is basically an Armenian donut, BUT better! And if you have never tried a ponchik, you should! Other favorites are the Armenian pizza and peroshkis. I think the workers are friendly and clearly I am not Armenian. There is a wait, but it's not that long. A friend brought over 14 warm ponchiks for a holiday treat. We cut a few open to try them out. I tasted the apricot, the dulce de leche and the custard. They were all very good and we all agreed the custard ones were the best. They have a very generous amount of filling - much more than I am used to and that's a good thing. Unfortunately they start cooking ponchik's at 6:45AM but we were willing to wait and we were glad that we did. We ordered three different flavors: custard, Oreo nutella, and ferrero rocher. They were all delicious. Great texture. It wasn't too doughy, had a little crisp to it, and was decently filled; they do not skimp out. They're made to order so be careful when you take a bite, they were steaming hot. It does take about 10-15 minutes to be made so I would suggest calling ahead of time if you don't have time to wait. Definitely would come back to try out more treats if we're in the area. This place gets more ridiculous by the minute. Not only do their pastries keep getting smaller and smaller, but their prices keep getting unreasonably higher! Just setting the prices side by side with any other bakery shows you what a joke this place has become. I will never return to Papillon. In addition to paying $15 for a single adjarakan, they charged me $1.65 plus tax for a side of jalapeños. Note that is same side or jalapenos pizza places throw in the pizza boxes for free when you buy a $5 pizza. So I made the pilgrimage to Papillon last week for the coveted ponchiks. I was impressed. However, I actually prefer the custard ponchik to the nutella. I felt the nutella was too overpowering where as the custard allowed me to taste all of the ponchik meaning the custard and the dough. I probably wont be back for a while just because of the distance from where I live. Now for the parking situation: BE WARNED. Parking here sucks so bad. The bakery is located literally on the corner of Central and Chevy Chase and the lot is small. Also because of the bakery being constantly crowded the other businesses around it have taken to reserving parking places for their businesses.
