This was an experience. We came in here after having visited many of their other restaurants (we actually shipped going to pappadeaux) to come here tonight. The ribeye was supposed to be 16 oz but looked more like a 10 when it arrived. There was no fat on it, and anyone who eats steak knows the flavor comes from the fat. Papa's Pro Steakhouse was a lovely pick for Valentine's Day. Service was genuinely excellent from start to finish and our waiter was attentive. Valet was $10 with two attendants, which felt reasonable given the downtown location. We started with the Spanish octopus carpaccio, and it was absolutely the highlight of the night. It was incredibly fresh, bright, and beautifully citrusy. For mains, we ordered both the ribeye and the filet. The filet clearly stood out: tender, flavorful, and cooked perfectly, while the ribeye was good but not nearly as memorable. For sides, the mashed potatoes were fantastic and easily one of the best parts of the meal. The creamed spinach had good flavor but leaned a bit too heavy and rich for our taste. The dessert cart was a nice touch and added to the overall experience; we went with the crème brûlée, which was a perfect, classic ending. Filets were a big hit with my guests. Sides deliver... excellent Mashed Potatoes... Spinach, Brussels, Mac & Cheese too. Crab Cakes ok, not my favorite preparation... I like more simple crab focused, this too fried. Lobster Deviled Eggs not impressive, need to rethink the prep... tiny piece of lobster and a jar of egg yoke to spoon in... kinda dumb idea and not enough lobster. Great Shrimp Cocktail, salads are excellent. Desserts are insanely great. They bring a cart by the table to tempt you. I can't think how anyone could refuse some of these treats... they all look unbelievable. Everything we tried was great, esp. the Cheesecake... It comes on a block of pink Himalayan salt and topped with enoki mushrooms. This is usually offered off the menu. If you down to spend some money I definitely recommend the A5. Their other steaks are delicious as well, and if it's not they will gladly remake it until it is. The service is great here. My favorite side is the Au Gratin Potatoes, you need to get the POTATOES!!! Some of the best potatoes i have ever had in my life. As for dessert, can't go wrong with a pecan pie. Its nice a warm when they bring it out. That while sipping a carajillo is absolute bliss. I could go on and on about how much I love Pappas, but go ahead and try them out for yourselves! Where do I even start? I visited for Houston Restaurant Week and, for the most part, thoroughly enjoyed my experience. I was excited because I had heard good things about this steakhouse. The mashed potatoes were buttery and delicious. The asparagus was, well, an asparagus. Nothing too mouthwatering there. The highlight of my entire meal was actually the cheesecake. The pictures do not capture its size. My only regret is that I was unable to take it to go since I was too full past the point of gluttony and could not safely store it. In terms of the food it was solid, nothing incredibly memorable. For cocktails I tried the Verte 75 which is good if you like something refreshing and minty/cucumbery. The lychee martini was really just a vodka mixed with lychee syrup and raspberry popping boba so if you're into that go for it but I personally would opt for a more snazzy cocktail. We arrived on a Saturday evening. Being downtown, parking can be tricky, but there's a garage nearby or valet for $10--we opted for valet. When you walk in, it feels very old-school, dimly lit with a classic steakhouse vibe. There's even a meat display at the entrance showcasing the different cuts available. We had reserved a table with a high chair, so yes--they can be kid-friendly if that's what you're looking for. We also noticed a few other children dining during the early evening hours. The service was great. Our server was knowledgeable, especially when it came to the wine list, which lines the walls with what must be thousands of bottles. We were also given complimentary bread and butter. [VEGETABLES] +Fresh Jumbo Asparagus for $17.95 - The asparagus was good, but depending on your preference, note that it sits in a buttery liquid. - 4/5 [STEAK] Porterhouse Steak (dry-aged, 26 oz) for $89.95 - This bone-in steak includes filet mignon on one side and New York strip on the other, sliced tableside. While I liked the concept of trying two cuts, the meat was sliced too thick for my taste. It also lacked enough salt, and despite ordering medium, it was closer to well-done. Honestly, I feel like I could make a tastier steak at home with meat from Whole Foods using a griddle or sous vide and finishing it in cast iron. - 3.5/5 Overall, I expected more from the steak considering the national praise this place receives. Came in for dinner and I was very impressed by everything I had gotten. Service was amazing and the ambience of the restaurant is great. The place is super spacious yet still intimate despite it's size. For appetizers I got the shrimp cocktail. The shrimp was sweet and tender, and paired very well with the cocktail sauce provided. The sauce was a little on the sweet side, but had a nice tang to it as well. I also got the poblano soup which was very hearty, warm, and had a nice small kick. Perfect for a cold night. For the entree I got a filet mignon which was cooked to a perfect medium and was perfectly seasoned. I also tried some of my friend's broiled salmon fillet which was just as delicious. It had lumps of crab and was doused in a delicious white wine sauce. For sides we had the au gratin potatoes and haricot verts. Both were absolutely delicious and perfectly seasoned. For dessert I got the chocolate turtle pie which is super sweet and super decadent, but was very delicious. As for drinks I tried the lychee martini, crystal key lime martini, and christmas in kentucky. The martinis were both on the sweeter side, and tasted absolutely delicious. We spent over $650 on dinner we didn't complain at the restaurant because the service was so bad we wanted to just leave. If we hadn't already ordered all our food in hopes it would get better we would have just left, however it never did. We left with the managers name on a business card and the GM. We actually took home our lobster and steak it was that bad. When I called the manager the following Monday we never heard back from anyone until I finally had to call Corp. office. Although Courtney in guest relations was nice to try to fix the problem we waited 4 weeks and after multiple calls from me to follow up we finally got a response in the mail. A measly $250 gift card after we spent $640+ tip Yes we still tipped we are good people and we couldn't bring ourselves to leave nothing which now I regret!! They say they want to make it better, this has been the worst experience we have ever had. I wouldn't waste a dime on this restaurant or any others by this company. I took the Mrs here for our 34th anniversary before seeing a show nearby. Pappas has a stellar reputation as anyone in Houston knows, but our experience left us somewhat undazzled. I mean these comments to be constructive just so management can perhaps understand better customer perspective. One of my complaints will not be about price, but when you shell out $300 on dinner for two, (one cocktail, one side, two appetizers, two filets, one side, no dessert, no coffee), you expect things to go amazing. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't amazing. Specifically: We arrived within 2 minutes of our reservation, but had to wait about 10 minutes to be seated. My Old Fashion was quite good but took too long to be served. Our waiter even came to apologize about it. The bread was warm, but the texture was kind of cake-like. I'm not sure what other customers like but I'd suggest management consider something with more yeast, maybe like sourdough. The kind of bread that stretches when you pull it apart. The Turtle Gumbo (with sherry) tasted quite good but was way too hot. Had to wait several minutes for it to cool. The lobster deviled egg was ok, but honestly nothing special. The real issue here is they bring the egg whites with a chunk of lobster in each half, and a jar of egg yolk mixture with bacon pieces in it. The bacon pieces were too big and had to be cut or pulled apart, and then you had to spoon the yolk mixture into your egg half. All a very clumsy undertaking. Better for the staff to prepare everything in the kitchen so that the only thing for the customer to do is pick it up and eat it. The Brussels sprout side was quite good. No complaints. Great balance of sweet and bitter flavors. Now the steaks. We both ordered filets medium. The flavor was fine but they were too chewy. Since this was the main course it is the main complaint. A $60 filet should pretty much melt in your mouth. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Ambiance wise, was nice. Good steakhouse feel no doubt. Piano player in the bar was a nice touch[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. Timewise, we were in there from 6pm to 730. Seemed a little long overall, but since we were seated a little late I'm not sure if this is typical. We had to rush out to make sure we were seated for the concert. Anyone trying to match up dinner and a show should plan for such delays. Next time I'd do a 530 reservation to make an 8pm show. I typically prefer the OG location, but depending on the occasion, who I'm meeting, etc. this place is slowly winning me over. We typically dine fairly late, but it's never an issue here and they're always on their game. We also tend to order a lot and sit for hours, but the staff are always along for the ride and knowledgable about their menu if you do have questions along the way. Extremely large wine selection, definitely helpful if you need guidance or a push in any direction. But something for everyone certainly. I'd say, if you have the free time and can make it to the original on Westheimer, or if it's a special occassion, that location is worth the extra effort. It was NYE so I'm extending some grace but we honestly didn't enjoy our experience that much. Reservation was at 8:15 we didn't get seated until almost 8:45. Our server Robert was Amazing! Drinks were delicious! We had the preset menu but time between courses was really long, we're talking 45mins almost. The crab cakes were fabulous, the Caesar salad wasn't great honestly. Ordered the Prime Ribeye cooked medium, this steak was so tough, It was an incredibly lean ribeye which isn't ideal honestly, prefer my steak to have some marbling. Had it sent back and requested a Filet but had the kitchen just pack it up to go because again the dinner was already running really long. The au gratin potatoes and the cheesecake were delicious.
