If you happen to live close by, you are a lucky dawg! This is a great place. Dined there the night before a cruise with the entire family. Geez..I hope your family is not like mine! So, I called a couple of hours before and ask about reservations. Sarah, said she would put me on 'the list'. I highly recommend calling and getting on 'the list'. When we arrived with a dozen people.. 4 kids under 10, and a bunch of adults that act like they are under ten! Sarah immediately sat us. Nice not to manage that group in an already crowded space. This place is busy on a Saturday night. The waitress was really super. This was not her first rodeo by know means. Got the kids quickly settled in with drinks and such. Then the big kids, and time to order. Around the table she went. With an occasional, uh, can I change that to... whatever. Thinking this lady is going to bolt at any mioment. With a smile on her face she took the orders and quickly got out of ear shot. In a few minutes, she returned with another around of sodas, water, and adult beverages. They do have a good selection of beer, super mix drinks..and a Happy Hour from 3-7, Monday-Friday. Then a small army of food totters brought us our meals. One by one the table went from a roar to silence. Every one was eating and nodding that I had done good... recommending the restaurant. This is genuine comfort food. Everyone around the table was feeling the comfort. Plus, another round of drinks and we were set. So, whether it is a burger, fish, or meatloaf with creole sauce, it was all good. We have driven past Pappys 1000 times and maybe more. I have seen it most of my life, nothing special just sitting patiently waiting for us to meet. Through an internet video, we were lured in for Chicken Fried Steak rated 7th best in Texas. The place is medium size, long bar with the Astros on every screen through out. Some of the staff wore Astros shirts, for that I would come back but we were there for the food. We started with spinach artichoke dip, it was spot on. Many places us so much salt, not here and chunks of artichoke heart make me very happy. It was a perfect combination and I'm picky. Next caesar side salads, they make their own dressing and it shows. I'm not a rabbit but I was chewing on salad like one with my nose twitching I was so content but worried that if I continued I would be full before what I came for in the first place. Ok, two more bites and I was sad to slide the bowl away and I never feel that way about salad but I knew it would not be around tomorrow. Main course, a massive hanging off the plate chicken fried steak, I asked for gravy everywhere because...gravy, come on, this was no time to be dainty. The breading was perfect, the color was spot on, the meat could be cut with a fork. I added extra pepper to my gravy but honestly, I was fine with out it. Was it the best I have ever had, without a doubt, it was seriously good, call your momma and complain about grandmas gravy because you have been shortchanged your whole life, good. Side note, the Texas Toast laid in wait for plate cleaning duty, that was a rookie mistake, they give you two slices, eat one and save the other to clean the plate after the fight has been won. Dessert, Blackberry Cobbler with Blue Bell Vanilla ice cream. When we were done you could have put the bowl back on the shelf is was so clean. It's comfort food at its best. Last, the service, not intrusive but very friendly. Our drinks were always full, they were fast and when service is done right, it's seamless and smooth. They do it very well. read more

I don't understand all the good reviews here. The food isn't up to par. It isn't even close. I got the Hawaiian chicken, which was a pathetic cutlet, that was sauteed in burnt butter and dried out. It had a lonely, out-of-place slide of pineapple on top. The smashed potatoes and green beans on the side were also lackluster. I'd much rather go to the Texas Roadhouse for comfort food. read more

This place is horrible. I ordered chicken fried steak, fried okra and twice baked potatoes. First of all, okra was ice cold. They took it from freezer and fried, but it was ice cold! The chicken fried steak is terrible! It's pounded out very thin and full of grissel. It was mostly fried batter. The potatoes were absolutely awful. They were probably powdered potatoes. Very impressed with the quality, taste and the amount of food per serving. We were evacuees from Louisiana due to hurricane Delta and decided to try Pappy's for one of our meals. Food was delicious and servants were friendly and efficient. Prices were very reasonable. We returned for another meal before leaving for home after the all clear was given. When back in Houston, we would not hesitate to go back to Pappy's. Highly recommend! read more

Tonight my friends and I had the best service of our lives. Our waitress was Ashlea, she is simply the best. She was extremely kind and affectionate, she always had a smile and a good attitude, she came to us every 15 minutes to drink more drinks. We were the last to leave, and we never felt the time pass, of how good the deal was in general. Except for the girl we think is the host, we were waiting forever at the entrance, hoping she would find a table for us when the restaurant was quite slow. The food was good. Our team loves their Fried Catfish, Fried Onions, Fried Pickles with Homemade Ranch (yum!), Broccoli Cheese Rice Casserole, Chicken Fried Steak, and much more! It's close to my area & the service is always fast! I always get the ribeye which is my favorite! Tender & juicy with fries on the side. Or I'll get an order of ribs. I love going here. Just don't like the small bathroom they have. You can easily bop your head in there! There's parking in front and back as well. And you can always pick up your order to go within 20 minutes! Sadly though they will be closing March 30 but moving to a new location in the beginning of April. You can be sure I'll be there! read more

Was brought here by friends who are regulars for Sunday brunch. Pappy's has a mimosa deal- $6.50 for 5 glasses, AWESOME. The food was excellent and quick-- but what really stood out on our recent visit was our server, Terry. This man was out and out KIND to us. We walked in at the start of the dinner rush and our toddler had a meltdown. As we tried to figure out if we should just leave (I hate bothering people), Terry came over and said "What's wrong little fella? Let's get you something to eat!" By the time most restaurants would have drinks out to the table, Terry had brought the baby dinner. He completely alleviated the situation. The baby ate, we ordered and were able to eat. Terry checked in with us about mid-meal and the baby sang to him. Terry sang back. When it was time to go, Terry brought out a toy for the baby "so he'll have something to keep him company in the car". You guys. My husband and I take our toddler with us everywhere. Meltdowns happen because he's two and hungry. We usually pack up and leave. I've never had anyone be this kind and patient. I'm grateful. read more

First time trying this restaurant. Seated immediately, but at a table that hadn't been cleaned, so we asked to sit elsewhere without issue. Server was pleasant. Sorely disappointed in the food, however. Everything was very bland and uninspired. I ordered the Laredo chicken with sides of okra and mac and cheese. None of it was good. Even my son's burger remained unfinished which is unheard of for him. I can't imagine ever coming back to eat here. read more

I tried it at the new location today for the first time, after being a regular at the old location for many years. The food and friendly service are the same. However, it is difficult to get to, the parking is much worse than at the other location (and that is saying something), and it took a long time to get our food. I had a nice conversation with the owner, who has always been a nice guy. He said that they have been overwhelmed by the lunchtime crowd, and it is better to come at 11:00, or after 1:00. I will try it again, as it never disappointed in the past. I just hope that ingress and egress, and food delivery is a bit better the next time. read more

Tonight my family and I ate at pappys for Father's Day dinner, big mistake! Half our meals weren't even warm when they brought everything out. But with how busy everything was we decided not to complain. Until I cut my daughters hamburger in half and it was still bloody. Ew! Sent it back and she was brought out a cheeseburger. She doesn't like cheese...which is why I ordered her a hamburger. But by the time we got her cheeseburger everyone else was almost done eating so we decided she would suck it up and eat it anyways. Until she took a bite and it was PINK again! I'm extremely disappointed. This doesn't fly in the restaurant I work in. I used to love pappys! But after today I won't be back. read more

Awesome food and fast service. If you really want a funny server as for Terry. This guy will make you laugh your tail off and will also make tasty recommendations for new menu items. The menu is about the same as a chilis, but with MUCH greater quality for the same price. I live right behind the joint and this is our go-to American grill restaurant. Good bar as well. Very friend environment. However, I deducted 1 star because this place is dirty. Dust exists on the light fixtures right above your food on the table. The ceiling is beyond gross. They really need to do a deep clean and renovations... Don't skip this place, it's awesome. read more

I came tonight with my family. Service started good and we ordered appetizer. After 20 min. Waitress came back saying they were out of sirloin and asked if we wanted to switch to something else. We ordered more drinks and waitress offered a free appetizer. We tried another appetizer because we were very hungry. Although the waitress was very friendly she was not efficient as she messed up our order. An hour later we finally got our food. Steaks and chicken fried steak were good but my hamburger was very well done and not juicy at all :( The restaurant might be good but we did not have very much luck on out first time. What prompted my inspiration to write a review was my recent visit during which Terry was our waiter. He is hilarious and very attentive. Been coming for years. First time at new location order Lemon chicken it came over cooked or better described as burnt. Wife order Lemon catfish which came uncooked. Both returned and second time around able to eat but not to old standards. Server was slow and had to be called by other servers. Hope one of our favorites can improve! read more

We have eaten here several times and the food is usually very good. This time we had a party of 11. Everyone's food came out. All looked good until the child's plate of corn had a cooked roach in it ,about an inch long. Yuk! We pointed it out to one of the servers, they immediately sent out a new bowl of corn and we new it was from the same pot. The child didn't eat it and was not offered anything different. Talk about ruin everyone's appetite. When we told the waitress, she said she would take the corn price off the bill, 99cents. The entire child's meal should have been comped. Pappys is delish! I always get the fried catfish and they are cooked to perfection. Their sweet tea is very good. They also have delicious "scorpion tails" which are fried shrimp in a jalepeno with cream cheese. Their cheeseburgers are great too! Basically everything you order will probably be good, so just go. read more

Pappy's has been my one of my favorite restaurants since I was a child. The food and great family atmosphere has kept me coming back for years. However, recently my trips to Pappy's have left me driving away in disgust. The service has been subpar with one particular waiter, which I reflected in her tip, and she had the audacity to call me out on the amount I tipped her. I was disgusted by this. First of all, I'm a generous tipper who rewards good service. But most of all, this comment was completely inappropriate. I wish I knew this waiter's name, but unfortunately I left in such haste I didn't ask for it. I just thought y'all would want to know. Thank you and keep up the great food! read more

Pappy's is one of my favorite places to eat in Houston and every time that I go there it seems to get better and better!! Pappy's is located of off the I-10 feeder road right before Voss. Its large sign calls out its name when driving past it on the interstate however you may be more concerned about dying on I-10 so it may be easy to miss. When you decide to take a chance with your life and glance away from the road for several seconds you will see the big green sign calling your name and telling you to stop on in for some good homestyle cookin. When you get inside you will notice that restaurant is very Texan and very old fashion. There are a hub caps on the walls and pictures of famous Texans such as LBJ. When you sit down and open the menu you will see a wide variety of food from hamburgers (try the mushroom-swiss) to tex-mex (the fajitas and quesadillas are both great) There menu has a little something for everyone, my favorite is the Deluxe Chicken Sandwich, which is wonderfully messy and is served with french fries and fried bell peppers. The chicken fried steak is also great, the meat is incredibly tender and the sides are to die for (the fried okra is great) And if you save room for dessert try the Apple Walnut Cobbler..mmmm. When you go inside you will notice the bar at the center of the restaurant and you also note that everyday they seem to have great daily drink specials and $2.50 domestic bottles. I have coming to this restaurant for several years and the food has always been great and I will continue to come back often. The prices are reasonable and risking my life on I-10 to get there is totally worth it. read more

Nothing fancy, just down home goodness. We were on a mission when our group headed to Pappy's: a pregnant friend had her heart set on chicken fried steak. The first place we thought of, one of us thought the quality had gone down recently, the second place only had fries and potatoes for sides and the little lady wanted okra, so we finally settled on Pappy's. The other gent and I stopped off for a St. Arnold's Oktoberfest at the bar, since the waiting area is small with no seating, but our name was called before long, and we tucked into a hearty CFS dinner. The steak was pounded flat and chicken-fried to perfection, slathered with cream gravy, and delicious with fried okra on the side. The CFS dinner comes with your choice of house or caesar salad, you know, so you can convince yourself you're eating healthy. Their mashed potatoes are good, or step it up with the "smashed" potatoes - made with chives, cheddar, and bacon. There's plenty of other stuff on the menu, much of it fried, from jalapeños to chicken tenders to catfish, but not everything. They've got dinner salads, steaks, sandwiches, even Tex-Mex options like enchiladas and tacos. Coupled with the Western aesthetic, Pappy's delivers hearty - if not heart healthy - Texas fare. read more

Are you serious here! I mean this place only has one review! I just have to say that this place has the best TORTILLA SOUP in the world! Well I don't know in the world but certainly Houston. Lets see I love Bubbas Chicken, its like super moist chicken with bacon wrapped around and my favorite appetizer is spinach artichoke dip which well I really didn't want to try but as soon as it came into my taste buds I mean the started dancing and also the fried mushrooms! Pappy's is cozy place to eat. However, the food itself is a bit disappointing. I split a hickory burger with my friend, with fries. The fries were very greasy and soggy. I picked out the few crispy ones and left the rejects. The burger was thick, juicy, and delicious, though. The fried mushrooms that came with the order tasted a bit strange, and the crust on them were wet and falling off. Twice, waiters came by with orders that weren't ours: chips and salsa, and then a cheeseburger. Strange. My friend's brother was unsatisfied with his steak fingers and complained they had no flavor. Overall, Pappy's has good burgers, but you might want to skip the steak fingers and the fries. read more

Pappy's used to be my favorite place ever. I'd go there and know the entire staff;m laugha nd talk to everyone like old friends. They slowly started to change for the worse when the familiar faces got replaced with new faces. The last straw for me was when they started selling the exact same $2.50 margarita for $4. It is insulting to me that they would make such a drastic change in price for the exact same product as if i wouldn't notice. They have dropped waaaay down on my list. read more
