This location is attached to like a parking garage so it does make parking convenient. There's outdoor seating, tables, and bar seating. I tried the happy hour drinks strawberry grapefruit spritz. It tasted a bit bitter and I couldn't really taste the strawberry at all just mostly syrup. The tequila mockingbird which was better than expected. Edit: I came back for the drinks and they were great. Very friendly. I tried the food and it was on the bland side which if you're trying to eat healthy this could be a good thing. read more

I have not been to a Treebeards in over 20 years - I am just not a fan of red beans and rice or Jambalaya. Yet, a friend picked this restaurant and I met him. Using Waze this is a hard place to find as it is behind office buildings not on the feeder as the address suggests. Further finding outdoor parking is not possible at a peak hour but note that there is an easily accessible parking garage. This Treebeards appearance was very pretty (not what I was expecting giving my experience with the downtown location and I am not sure that it is still around). Also, some other nice restaurants in this block. The restaurant was packed with professionally dressed people. The waiter took our order, and he was accommodating to substitutions and our selection of side orders. I got fried catfish. This is not a normal selection for me as I will normally avoid fried foods other than fries and chips (yes, and I wonder why I do not lose the 5 lbs. that I need to lose). I had the chicken fried chicken and felt like the batter was perfectly cooked, flavored, and crispy, which I love. The chicken was also juicy, which was really nice. This is a great little spot to have a lunch meeting and then walk right over and get some coffee. I had the chicken breast here which was amazing along with the brussels sprouts which was out of this world. Followed up by the fruit cup with tons of fresh fruit. Treebeards off the Katy Freeway - Solid Comfort Food in a Convenient (but Tricky) Spot We stopped by Treebeards on the Katy Freeway in Houston, Texas, and it was exactly what we needed for a hearty lunch. Finding the place can be a little confusing if you're coming right off the Katy Freeway because of the unique building structure it's tucked into -- just take it slow and you'll spot it. Once you're there, though, there's plenty of parking in the shared lot. Fair warning: it does get very crowded since so many other restaurants and retail spots share the same area, so you might have to circle a bit during peak times. The atmosphere is really nice and relaxed. They have seating both inside and outside, with plenty of tables plus some comfy couches where you can settle in and enjoy your meal without feeling rushed. You order at the counter when you walk in, then grab a seat wherever you like -- super straightforward. We went with the gumbo, two orders of the chicken pot pie, and a shepherd's pie. Overall, the food was good -- solid, comforting, and filling -- but it wasn't quite amazing. We've definitely had better versions of the shepherd's pie, chicken pot pies, and gumbo at other spots around Houston. That said, the sides were legit! The macaroni and cheese and red beans and rice were both tasty and hit the spot. The jalapeño cornbread had great flavor, but man, it was extremely dry. Like, the kind of dry where you take a bite and immediately need a big swig of your drink to get it down. For dessert, we split the yellow cake with chocolate frosting. My wife really enjoyed it, though I'm not a huge fan of that style. I did notice they offer bread pudding, so I'll definitely be trying that next time. They weren't kidding when they said "small". Chicken was good, veggies frozen, mac n cheese awful! Small quantity. Looks like this is a drinking place, food optional. Drinks looked good. This is the best location for Treebeards thanks to the ample parking and the hours. The food is excellent. If you're sitting in the bar area there is a waiter, but otherwise it is a counter service and then the food is brought to you. You can get your own tea and fountain drinks and also silverware. The red beans and rice are a staple and something I get every time I am in town. read more

After enjoying the downtown Treebeards location years ago, I was excited to visit the Memorial location. Unfortunately, all the great things I remembered quickly disappeared. The gumbo was thick and tasteless, and the pot roast was shockingly dry despite being served with a small amount of thin gravy. The mashed potatoes were good, but my dining companion ordered the red beans and rice with cornbread, and the staff repeatedly brought the wrong dishes--even after we showed them the receipt. The cornbread didn't arrive until thirty minutes later, after the rest of the meal was already finished. The dirty rice has banana peppers or some sort of yellow pepper that I not a big fan of but still was very good. French fries were fresh and crispy, if it was hit with a little more salt fresh out the grease it would be perfect, still good. The gravy was also delicious. It's been YEARS since I've been to Treebeard's, having frequented the downtown location for decades. First, the memorial location is GORGEOUS. The indoor/outdoor feel was perfect on a spring evening. Parking was ample. But the experience went downhill a bit from there. The blackberry ginger margarita was TINY, and extremely unbalanced, overwhelmingly ginger forward where the blackberry flavor was completely missing. The food was incredibly salty while being both dry and somehow just bland. This was what I imagine Luby's food tastes like. That's not a compliment. Order takers were young, inexperienced and not exceedingly friendly. I ended the night with a takeout piece of butter cake. $5 for a 2 inch square of sickly sweet, underbaked cake? Is it as good as the original? Not quite. Will it do in a pinch? Absolutely. While battling holiday traffic around Memorial City Mall, we decided to give this Treebeards location a try. The restaurant was nearly empty on a Saturday. The food was pretty solid, albeit the chicken fried chicken was a little soggy on one side, and our red beans and rice was lukewarm. I really liked their Mac and cheese + chicken and dumplings. The staff was extremely kind and the space was very comfortable. I would stop by again if in the Memorial area. I used to go here all the time downtown. I haven't been in a long while so when they put this up on the meeting place for post church lunch I was excited. Now I probably went a bit overboard in ordering but I wanted my kid to sample a few things. The only thing we didn't get that I used to always order was the red beans and rice with sausage link. It's good but I only used to order it because it used to be the cheapest thing on the menu. My kid didn't like red beans and rice though (last time I got it at a food truck) so I decided to pass. Instead I ordered the seafood gumbo (a bit bland - their branded hot sauce helped), fried catfish with étouffée topping (the best of the lot) and a side of tartar, and the jambalaya (also a bit bland). For sides we got mashed potatoes (they have the variety that has chunks of potatoes and skin), jalapeño corn bread (a bit dry), squash casserole (also kinda dry), and fries (nice - best side of the lot). For desert we got the Italian cream cake (still fire), yellow cake (kinda dry but ok if you take a bite with the frosting), buttercake (super sweet like I remember it) and banana pudding (which was arguably the best of the dessert bunch). The staff was super duper nice and not rushed like downtown. Overall the food was decent but not like I remember it downtown in the 90's. I think maybe eating is all about being in the moment. They have a menu that is cajun centric mixed with southern comfort. I elected to get the red beans and rice, and it came out in a very good amount. You also can obtain various hot sauces to spice up your meals. Seating area is abundant, but it does get crowded. Go early to beat the crowd. This place is great for brunch/lunch. read more

This was a random walk-in for me, but Treebeards was a VERY pleasant surprise! Inside, nothin fancy self-serve order and spacious ambiance. I wasn't expecting much given the smaller menu. What stuck out to me, was that the food was simple, homestyle, and just plain delicious. Southern comfort done right. The price was very reasonable given the location, I did not feel like I was getting charged a premium 'trendy food' price. I was most impressed by the cakes of all things. Very simple, but moist and you could taste real strawberry chunks in the cream, reminded me of my wedding tasting times. I like that you order at the counter sp that you don't have to be asking for separate checks. Food is brought to your table. I ordered vegan beans and rice. They lacked taste. But what can one expect when eating beans not cooked with pork fat? I was disappointed not to find plain cornbread, only jalapeño. But they do bring bread and butter with your meal. Visited on a Thursday for lunch about noon. The place was very busy and a long line. The weather was nice so the outdoor seating was the best choice. There is a full bar and based on the set up looks like a good spot to hit after work to kill time while the traffic calms down. The food was good I had chicken fried chicken and collard greens. We did not have an issue finding a place to sit and parking was not bad either. Overall nice spot and I plan on visiting after work to see what the vibe is like. We've been loving Treebeards for almost 30 years. We've been living out of state for 20 years now but still have family in the Houston area. And every time we come to visit, we have to stop at Treebeards. Happy to see there's a location closer to the house.
