I've been a fan of Parakeet for many years now. I used to travel down to SD just to enjoy their delicious gluten free options and a great coffee while running my company remotely. I found so much joy in sitting there and how delicious the food was I literally would travel for more than an hour to just spend a couple hours there working and enjoying a tasty treat. Fast forward to when they opened in La Jolla and my drive was miraculously slightly shorter and still just as magical. When I heard about one opening where I lived, I was so estatic. I haven't been in a few years because I was pregnant and now have a baby and it just wasn't my lifestyle anymore. Sadly when I went, I was trying to talk to the staff about my newfound lack of being able to have dairy because my baby whom I breast feed has a rash reaction when I have dairy. The cashier was rude, impatient and offered the obvious salad without dressing. I was floored. Frustrated with her tone, I walked away did a lap with baby around the center and came back in. I decided I loved this place so much for so long maybe I'd just buy something and pray there's no dairy and baby won't have a reaction. Pediatrician wanted me to try dairy again anyways now that it had some time for his digestive system to mature. Needless to say I get back in line, look over the menu again (years of not being there I knew they had unique tasty things, but not clear on what I'd be in the mood for). Now there's a line and I'm feeling pressure, I don't get a coffee and end up getting a pastry of sorts and a loaf of their sourdough bread. Baby at this point isn't having it so I decide to just leave with my items that I can enjoy any time and head home. Hoping the car ride gets him to sleep, I start my drive back home and he does end up falling asleep, success! I reach over when at the light to open the sourdough and get a few bites in. The flavor was really off and not bad enough to spit it out but enough to not eat another bite. Mind you l, starving breastfeeding mom here so that says a lot. I get home and dada is awake, I fill him in. He knows how much I loved the one in SD, hears my story about how I went and left without having a coffee or real food and demands we go back. I put the bread on the counter and we head there. Same cashier, same attitude - this time Dada there to be like this is an allergy talk to the chef or pull your allergine menu. Lo and behold I am able to order a yummy bowl, I get my drink and he orders his coffee and drink as well. We sit down, it's perfectly delicious and I'm again a fan of parakeet and chop it up to an employee who hates her job or is just having a bad day. The next day for breakfast I dig into the sourdough to make toast and it's MOLDY! I was sold moldy bread and literally almost threw up thinking about how I ate it and it tasted off yesterday I just didn't notice . Being that it's much closer than driving to SD, Crystal Cove drive from Newport peninsula is still a trek when you have a one year old who hates the car, so my $20 loaf was a waste and that was the icing on the cake that parakeet is now a closed chapter in my book. I can't recommend this location for its quality or customer service. In theory it's exactly what was needed for that spot - sadly they aren't keeping up their standard where standard really matters most. read more

Very cute little spot right next to the beach. I got a breakfast sandwich and a strawberry matcha. I thought the matcha would be yummy with the strawberry, but it was straight grass, always a hit or miss with matcha. The food was good, overpriced for sure for the amount of food you get, but considering the location you should expect it to be high. (Breakfast Sandwich, Strawberry Matcha, & cookie was $40). Parakeet is in a great location right across from Crystal Cove State Beach, making it a convenient stop before or after spending time by the ocean. Parking can be a little difficult to find, but it's manageable. The lines were long when I visited, but they moved fairly quickly. I tried the matcha latte and the potatoes. The matcha was good and worth trying, but the potatoes were disappointing because they were too hard and a bit burnt. The customer service was good, and the café itself is beautiful with both indoor and outdoor seating. Overall, it was a decent experience. The location and atmosphere were definitely highlights, but the food didn't fully meet my expectations. I can see why people enjoy this place, but based on my visit, it wasn't a spot that stood out to me. read more

This review isn't for the food. We frequent here pretty often, food is good, service is good. Chill place to get brunch on weekend.. The issue I have is as a pet owner, there are signs all over saying if you have a furry friend feel free to dine on the patio. Respectfully. However we came here and I sat inside today. I know the staff sees it but chooses not to say anything. People letting their pets inside, on the furniture, is disgusting.. this is a health department violation esp when the pets are licking the tables. I do hope management addresses this issue. Overall nice experience at this cafe! There is lots of parking and indoor/outdoor seating, we were able to find a spot to sit on a busy Saturday. I thought the mint latte was refreshing and not too sweet, and the food came out shortly after! The green egg scramble was tasty and I enjoyed the bread and avocado that it came with (though I was missing a salsa or something spicy!). I paid ~$30 including tip. My friend ordered the chicken Caesar salad wrap and was disappointed in the size! She was expecting a filling "burrito size", but it was definitely more "snack size". I went here today, and it's a busy Saturday. The ambiance is nice, and the food and price are okay. My friends and I are just a little disappointed because we are almost done with our food and her coffee is not out yet. Employees just keep telling us that they will check it. We had to ask three employees about it, and luckily, the young lady gave us her attention and even gave my friend her coffee. I hope they would pay more attention to their customers:) read more

So I've been to this location a couple of times. There is always a line for sure. I thought the prices are a little on the higher side but it is also location impacted. However, everything I've tried, I've enjoyed. The first time I came I got a latte and a pastry I believe. This time, Sunday I got a lemon blueberry scone which I was pleasantly surprised by. My niece didn't care for it but I really enjoyed the taste. Lots of blueberries and not too sweet at all. I wished I had asked them to heat it up. While it's a more causal restaurant, you wait in line to order then help yourself to self seating, the line wasn't very long. I just wish they assigned seating instead of free-for-all seating because some customers are ruthless. And honestly that's their biggest flaw. The food took awhile to come out but it was well worth the weight, the protein waffles were a huge hit with the kiddos. I still enjoy coming here with my pup but their menu has changed somewhat. To my disappointment, they no longer have the Power Bowl and have added a few new items. I tried one of them - the protein waffle. I was hopeful that it would be good based on some other people's previous reviews, but I did not care for it much. It definitely is not a real replacement for a standard waffle, but supposedly it has around 44g of protein so it scratches the itch in a healthier way if you're hankering for a more macro friendly waffle. The Power Rancheros aren't much better, unfortunately. I would stick to the other menu items here that they do much better. read more

I love coming here! Even the drive there on PCH is part of the experience and always puts me in a good mood. My go-tos are the jicama chips & the waffers. Especially the chai and mocha flavored ones. Supee satisfying and surprisingly low calories. Theyre around 30-45 calories per pack and they keep me full longer than I expect. I literally drive 20 minutes to stock up on snacks for the week. Besides the snacks Ive tried their lattes which are also delicious. They also serve other food items & pastries, I have never tried them but I want to go back one of these days for brunch because they look amazing. A Beautiful location and a great stop after a Crystal Cove hike. Its a casual Cafe that has you ordering at the counter with the food being brought to you. There is indoor and outdoor seating. The menu emphasizes healthy and organic selections with modifications to some items, allowing you to make it paleo, vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free. No seed oils used here. The only oil used includes olive oil, avocado, and coconut oil. Although the cashier was super friendly, her knowledge on the menu was limited. We had a few questions on ingredients and modifications and she couldn't offer substitutions available or ingredients in a dish. She did ask the chef, which I appreciate, but it slows down the line and doesn't answer all our questions. We ordered the breakfast burrito, which included scrambled eggs and roasted potatoes. I removed the labneh to make it dairy free and substituted it for guacamole. I also had them remove the pico de gallo and ordered the burrito with a gluten free tortilla. The burrito was hearty and flavorful and the guacamole was definitely a good swap. We also ordered the French Omlette sandwich. The eggs were fluffy and perfectly cooked. The homemade brioche bun was delicious and fresh. I Hate to say this, but this sandwich had way to many greens with some tasting inedible. Although a bit pricey, we enjoyed our meal, and customer service was great. I do feel they could use more staff. I felt bad for the only girl working the floor who had to deliver food, and clear and clean the tables. She wiped the food off the outdoor tables onto the floor and it was never swept up. I just ordered the breakfast burrito and, for $16 without even adding turkey bacon or avocado, I expected it to be good to amazing. Unfortunately, it was extremely disappointing. The burrito tasted like it had little to no seasoning, and there was a large amount of liquid pooling at the bottom from the pico de gallo, which made it soggy and unpleasant to eat. Parakeet in Newport is my favorite cafe. The food is amazing, is healthier than most places, and uses no seed oils! The service is exceptional and I love the ambiance. Every detail is on brand; even down to the pink heart-shaped stopper for the to-go cups! It is also very peaceful with a nice view of the ocean across PCH. I enjoy going here to relax while I work. When I visited on Tuesday, I was welcomed with Tay's friendly smile. She now knows my drink order by heart. Megan and Sean also made a point to say hi to me and have a brief conversation. They always make me feel like they are happy to see me! This trip my Chai tasted off and when I brought it to Tay, she asked questions and offered to make a new one with a smile. The barista, Luke, even came out to ask questions with a friendly attitude. He recognized me and my order from previous visits and went above and beyond to make sure I was happy with my beverage. He asked questions and was very proactive. Once he made my new beverage, he delivered it to me and made sure I enjoyed it, which I did. The Poke Bowl I had for lunch was delicious! I generally manage my expectations do my research, etc. however today just wasn't the day for me at parakeet Café. Being that it was a holiday of course the shopping center and parakeet were busy as usual with a small line out the door. Parking was a bit of a challenge, but no fault to the café. I queued up and was immediately greeted by the female order to take her/cashier with black hair. She was phenomenal. Very friendly I explained where we would be sitting since the front café seating area was full and she took note of it. We opted for the tuna sandwich, the tuna tartare with chips, and Arnold Palmer, and an iced tea. The total for the bill was over $40 plus tip. We were able to move our seats into the designated parakeet café dining area. A male food runner/server about 6 foot tall with short brown hair brought out our second beverage and then return several minutes later with the order. The tuna sandwich was just OK. There was some flavor that was putting me off from enjoying it. I would have to go back to the ingredients to specifically find out what that was. But it was a very small portion of fresh tuna. (Not tuna salad) on a very dry, crusty, hard to choose sourdough bread. It made the sandwich unenjoyable. We opted to have the potatoes which were the star of the meal. Those were delicious. You have an option for salad or potatoes and we chose potatoes. The tuna tartare with chips was similar to the tuna salad. If not the same I didn't really pay attention. The chips were good. Overall everyone knows you can get a similar item next-door at Bear flag. I'm not a fan of Bare flag. The sounded like an interesting starter to have with our meal. The beverages were fine. Overall, the experience was good, but nothing stands out as extraordinary. I know people love it for many of the benefits, including no seed oil, fresh baked items, vegetarian, gluten-free, etc. that is fantastic. I would probably come back and try other items maybe one of the toast or wraps. read more
