I'm not too sure what the hype over this place is! Service is fast and friendly but their drinks or food don't live up to the good reviews in my opinion. The house bagel and burrito were around $9-10 each and neither were good. The burrito was abysmally small (3-4 bites max) and the bagel was nothing special with an overcooked rubbery egg. We also ordered the blueberry matcha (hot) and the mango matcha (cold) and wouldn't get either of them again. My hubby and I go to the CDM Christmas Walk every year, and we always grab coffee before the event starts. This year, I had a coupon for Reborn, so we decided to stop in. The line was long due to the nearby event, so we waited about 15-20 minutes--totally understandable. When we finally got to the register, I ordered my drink and handed the woman my coupon. It was for one free drink with no expiration date and no restrictions. She said she hadn't seen it before and went to check with her manager. She came back, handed it back to me, and simply said, "I can't accept this." No explanation, no apology. I asked why, and she said her manager told her it wasn't valid. I pointed out that it had no expiration date, and she brushed me off and repeated that they wouldn't accept it. She didn't offer to let me speak with the manager either. I walked out feeling pretty stunned. After thinking about it, I turned around and went back in to talk to the manager myself. The woman from the register was talking to a man at the espresso bar and two other females--you could tell she was telling them what happened, and they were kind of smirking about it. The manager turned out to be one of the women standing right there. I told her she really should put expiration dates on their coupons if they aren't going to honor them. She just said the coupon was "old" and they wouldn't take it. Again, no apology. As I turned to leave, one of the guys behind the espresso bar sarcastically shouted, "I like your outfit, by the way," and started laughing with the others. For an employee to feel comfortable mocking a customer in front of the manager says everything about the culture there. We will not be going back. read more

After an amazing Lagree class, I decided I would treat myself to a delicious strawberry Matcha. I've been to the Huntington Beach location and I didn't try the strawberry Matcha yet so since I was in CDM, I thought now was the time to try this popular drink. I went with the house blend and my friend went with the guatemala blend, which are both dark roasts. We are both somewhat picky with our cold brew, and both our drinks were good but not amazing. The cold brews weren't as smooth, but the flavor was there. The space was very large with a lot of seating. My friend was also able to use the bathroom. The service was good and the ambiance was very comforting for a cafe. I walked in and it was cleaned very well and I found minimal trash around the establishment. However, this cafe has the most underwhelming matcha drinks and pastries I've ever had. I ordered the Guava Cheese pastry (not pictured) and iced Strawberry Matcha. The Guava Cheese pastry was a 5/10 at most. I was pleased with the taste of the guava jelly and cheese, but the ratio of jelly to bread was 60/40 with the bread making up the most of the pastry. I understand that the center is supposed to be all jelly but I've seen better ratios with every bite including the jelly and cheese. There was a great amount of jelly, but I think the pastry would be better if it had been spread out a little more instead of as a little circle pocket in the center. The Strawberry Matcha was the worst part about my experience. As a matcha connoisseur, it's my mission to find the best place that serves the best matcha and Reborn falls short of my standards. The best thing that I loved about the matcha drink was the fact that I can see them make the matcha concentrate for the drink, but the amount of water that was placed in the matcha bowl was horrendous! The creation of matcha is amazing to watch, but the ratio again was super disappointing. When I tasted the drink, it tasted very watered down and it wasn't the milk either. You can taste that the matcha was overwatered. The amount of milk and strawberry puree was fair and I honestly loved the strawberry taste, but the matcha was far too disappointing. Luckily for Reborn, I finished my danish because I was hungry and needed something small to hold me off for the rest of my evening, but I had to throw away my matcha. It was far too gone to even be remade and I'm sad that I can't get my money back, but this is what happens when you go to a cafe expecting everyone to know how to make a good matcha drink. My mom and I have been coming to Reborn for years. We're happy with it every single time and make it a point to stop by whenever we visit Newport.
