Spinach Empanada
Taylor R.

Clear 5 stars! I don't understand when people give only 4 stars but don't say anything about why they took off one star. Argentinian empanadas are my absolute favorite! I strongly prefer the baked method to other styles. This is a small spot at the UTC Westfield mall. It's best to order food and then go find a place in the plaza to sit and eat. We went on a Saturday afternoon and there was no wait. Empanadas are warm and ready instantly and they have complementary sauces. The three flavors I ordered were incredible--chicken, malbec beef, and spinach. Jackfruit, Beef, and Ham & Cheese were my husband's picks. Three empanadas are the perfect amount for a meal. This place definitely makes the list of spots I'll visit frequently.

Alfajores Cookie Sandwiches

Parana is an Argentinian bakery in the Liberty Station Marketplace. They specialize in empanadas, I have to admire those who know how to make them! It's a mini "pocket" sandwich that can be sweet or savory, depending on the filling. At Parana, the menu has Chicken, Beef, Spinach with Cheese, Mushroom with Cheese & Onion, Margherita pizza style, and more! I ordered the 3 pack: Chipotle Chicken, 5-Cheese and Margherita (my fave with tomato, basil and cheese). They have 3 dipping sauces, I chose Chimichurri and Creamy Green Olive. It was perfect, the flavors enhanced the overall taste of the Empanadas. Make it a meal with a garden salad and Lemonade or Latte. For dessert, they have Alfajores. It's a cookie sandwich filled with Dulce de Leche $3.70; or with Chocolate for $5.00 each. The daily special is buy 6 and get one free. That's a sweet deal for sharing! Order online to save time, there is always a line, which does move quickly so don't be discouraged, a fresh batch is in the works. Sincerely, Rosemary

The amount of VEGETARIAN/VEGAN options made me feel like a normal human being. Like is this how the meat eaters feel?? Must be nice ! So glad they have this many options! I have tried quite a bit of them and have never been disappointed. The rajas one has pretty earthy and chille flavor. It was so creamy and cheesy I could eat 5! The jackfruit one is very good too, the filling kind of reminds me of shepherd pie, I like how it's not trying to imitate a meat flavor but shines as its own flavor. Both of them are very well seasoned and honestly don't need any sauce. They came out to about 8.60$ The woman serving me was so friendly ! Please open more locations :)

Delicious!

Consistent, friendly and great selection of empanadas. We got to Liberty station a little early and they already had their empanadas hot and ready. I really like the chicken flavors most of all, but the beef choices are also quite delicious. They have many veggie options and a new flavor: hot Italian. Don't forget to get their house made sauces, so good! This is a stop I made every time when visiting this fantastic food collection. Take some home too, they reheat nicely.

Very good empanada. Fresh, hot, good flavor. Little on the pricey side but so is everything else at Liberty station. They are premade so they came out quick. It's inside the Liberty Public Market.

I really like getting empanadas from here. Such a treat. Now they have a stall at the OB farmers market. The difference is that they are fried at the market vs baked at Liberty station. I got the mushroom, chicken and spinach. I liked the mushroom the most- had great flavor. The spinach was alright, very heavy cream which my stomach didn't like. The chicken was tomato based so I knew I may be pushing it since my stomach is sensitive to acids and spices. Glad I was able to revisit a memory!

We ordered a dozen to try a bit of each. The crust is thinner and the filling is more creamier. We will be back. We enjoyed trying the different flavors. Fun place to come as this place is one of many restaurants under one roof.

Beef Empanada

This place has great empanadas. We were visiting Liberty Station grabbing small items from various food, places there to try things out, and we stumbled upon this place and ordered a beef empanada. The dough was perfectly cooked and nice and soft and the filling had tons of flavor and great texture. I highly recommend this place if you like empanadas!

Parana empanadas have a nice consistency, their pumpkin flavor is surprising, with consistent filling and stuffed to the brim.

After we ordered some food at another stall, we sat at the table in front of Parana. And the line was never long BUT it never stopped, so you know what this means...we had to give it a try. We ordered Chipotle Chicken, Five Cheese and Malbec Beef. We ended up taking it home because we were stuffed. The one star off is because instead of five cheese we recover chicken. But added another star because well out of the 3, we loved the chicken the best. All were good but the chicken was great. The dough is not as flaky as Filipino empanadas which is what I'm used to but still very good. I see why the line of people never stopped. And oh! The chimichurri sauce was top notch!

I had never tried empanadas before and I think this restaurant in Liberty Market might be a new favorite! The place is clean and the servers were very fast. We tried the shrimp, Malbec beef, and five cheese empanadas, chimichurri, and alfajores. The Malbec beef empanadas were our favorites by far. The five cheese was good, and the shrimp was just ok. The Dulce de leche in the alfajores was also really delicious. They sell it in jars as well and it seems to be a popular purchase!

Leilani M.

Wow! Awesome baked empanadas. Service was friendly and welcoming with a smile from the wonderful women working diligently as the line grew. Each empanada comes with a sauce of your choice chimichurri, chipotle chimichurri or creamy green olive. These perfect parcels hold up well if you plan to do some traveling. They also have some traditional alfajores or Dubai chocolate alfajores, beverages and tap to pay available. Once you enter from the main entrance by the patio just head straight back and it'll be on your left hand side.

Every time I visit San Diego, I always make sure to bring home empanadas from Parana! My absolute most favorite. My favorite flavors are mushroom, spinach, three cheese, and margarita. The chicken one is my favorite when I want meat. Creamy olive and chimichurri. I even brought home a jar of chimichurri because it's my favorite. Would highly recommend. Located inside Liberty Station! It can get very busy in the weekends. Plenty of parking outside. Love all the other food and shops as well!

The meals were very tasty and portions were just right. I can only speak about my dish as I didn't have a taste of the other meal. I had the El Vainero (sweet corn pancake with Mano cheese, shredded beef, black beans and plantains). The flavors were so amazing together. You will just have to try it. I also ordered yuca fries. The three types of "sauces" were mild, medium, and hot. All three were tasty in their own way and I enjoyed all of them with the yuca fries and towards the end of my meal, it added a little kick to my dish. As for beverages, we had water and I ordered the hot chocolate. I know, hot chocolate, but it was so good. I love an authentic cup of hot chocolate with a bit of real whip cream and some cinnamon. In all, our experience at Encuentro Cafe was great from the service to the food. It is very intimate and we ate in the covered patio. It was as it would be eating outside with tropical decor. Not crowded and noise level as it would be eating in an enclosed patio, not too noisy with the sounds of Old Town patrons walking/driving down the street. I will definitely look forward to visiting this restaurant again when I visit San Diego.

As a Colombian who has been craving authentic Colombian cuisine since my last visit to New York in…read moreDecember, I can confidently say this restaurant truly satisfied those cravings. Being nearly eight months pregnant, my expectations were especially high, and it is rare to find a place that meets them so well. From the seasoning of the food to the warm and attentive service, everything about this restaurant stands out. Although I don't recall my server's name, he was incredibly kind and provided excellent service throughout. The ambiance is also worth noting--the space is large, offers plenty of seating options, and even features a large TV, making it a great spot to relax or watch sports. To start, I ordered a watered mango juice along with a beef empanada. The empanada exceeded my expectations--despite being on the smaller side, it was packed with flavor. I enjoyed it so much that I ordered five more to go, which speaks for itself. They were served with fresh ají, a traditional sauce that complemented them perfectly. For my main course, I had the carne asada plate, which included steak, rice, beans, sweet plantains, avocado, tomato slices, and a small arepa. Every component of the dish was well-executed--the beans were flavorful, the meat was well-seasoned, and the overall plate felt authentic. It is often difficult to find truly authentic Colombian food, especially in San Diego, where options are limited or not genuinely Colombian. This restaurant, however, delivers on authenticity and flavor. The portion size was generous, and I ended up taking leftovers home to enjoy later. In addition to the empanadas (two chicken and three beef), I also ordered a buñuelo and a cheese arepa to go. Unfortunately, these items did not meet the same standard. The arepa lacked flavor and was overly greasy, and the buñuelo was dry and similarly oily, even after absorbing excess grease from the bag. Overall, I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for Colombian food, especially given how rare it is to find quality options in this area. Friends of mine visited recently as well and thoroughly enjoyed their bandeja paisa, further confirming the consistency of the food. I will definitely be returning--especially for those empanadas.
