Disappointing. Stopped in at 10 am because I was craving a pâté chaud but they were sold out. They open at 5am so I guess you have to get there really early. Looked around at all the different offerings, and ended up getting Đặc biệt / House Special #1 bánh mì. Way too much mayo! It was oozing out the sides with every bite- it was excessive to put so much in with a chicken salad/spread that already had mayo. There were 2 types of cold-cut- ham and chicken and a skimpy amount of flavorless pickled carrot and radish. The best part of all was the bread. Beware, the sandwich is $8! Yelp still has it listed for $3.75. Deceptive and definitely not worth the $8, when I could've gotten better right next door at A-chau (where I have been ordering for 17 years). Also terrible tiny parking lot full of homeless drunk looking men muttering endlessly and shouting at each other. Bad location with poor visibility. Their bahn mi is the best in San Diego, I found them on instagram and decided to see if the review was true. Let me tell you that for the first time, the instagram reviewer was telling the truth. Definitely a must try!!! A bit hard to find since the are a little hidden but once you find them you will come back for more. The owner was super nice, to be honest I was a bit afraid since most Vietnamese businesses I've been to, the employees or owners made me feel unwanted or would roll their eyes when I ask what their products are. Paris Bakery was a delight! This place was a bit hard to find, and it honestly looked a little sketchy from the outside. It's in the back of a little strip mall, and the outside is very underwhelming. Actually, the inside is pretty underwhelming too. However, don't let that stop you from trying the food inside! There's an old Vietnamese lady who will let you know in very clear terms what everything is and what you might even like. That might be somewhat off-putting at first, but she is right! The banh mi and the che were pretty delicious, and even a couple of the mystery parcels that she recommended were gone very quickly (it wasn't me!). It loses a start only because I like the texture of the French bread and the fillings of the bahn mi at K Sandwiches just a smidgeon more. The banh mi (bread) is made on-site throughout the day ... crusty and tasty. Paris Bakery is a solid Banh Mi spot. I ordered the Dac Biet (House Special) and it was pretty good. The meats were tasty and the bread itself was soft and airy on the inside and crunchy on the outside. It's definitely a place worth trying if you're in the area and craving a Banh Mi sandwich. With that being said, while I did like the sandwich and enjoyed it, I don't think there was anything in particular that stands out about it or makes it amazing compared to other Banh Mi places. If I didn't happen to be in the area, I wouldn't go out of my way just to come here because I personally believe you can find similar sandwiches at other restaurants. Of all the motivations and craving sources, we came here upon watching Youtube videos of adventures to Vietnam. Did they have everything we were craving? Of course not, because the vast majority of the delicious food doesn't make it over here to the United States. I guess you can say this is a typical Vietnamese bakery and banh mi business. Yes, it's called 'Paris' Bakery, but that's because much of Vietnamese culture is influenced by France (for those of you who didn't know), so the most evident things you might notice are the french alphabet in the writing, french bread, and names of businesses like this. Heck, there's an entertainment series containing musical performances and segments popular to the Vietnamese called "Paris by Night", for crying out loud. Back on track, this place is a good no-frills, straight-to-the-point business located to the adjacent plaza as Minh Ky and A Chau, all right by a busy intersection of what many consider San Diego's Little Saigon. You see it, you want it, you buy it. Minimize your alterations if at all possible. Don't like that? Then don't even come in. Nothing personal. Just the way it is. There are plenty of businesses that cater to specific diets. This isn't one of them, and people like me are totally fine by that. I kinda splurged from my usual spending habits and got some extra treats. We got a #1 Dac Biet (the everything combination), a #2 Thit Nuong (Pork), a pate chaud pastry, one of those tetrahedrons of banana leaves filled with sticky rice and mystery deliciousness, a coconut water, a vietnamese iced coffee (which is damn strong), and a pack of those desserts that are striped, alternating between mung bean and gelatinous "green" stuff. That was an amazing little feast in the morning before the rest of the day ahead of us. My lady said that the banh mi sandwiches here seem much fresher and/or much more nicely made. That went for both the french baguette AND the rest of the contents. I suppose our frame of reference was K Sandwiches in Linda Vista (although their situation is a bit more special, so I'm not trying to deter people away from K, which also has delicious sandwiches and such, but surprisingly in a different way). Parking: The plaza has a tiny parking lot shared by multiple businesses. There is extra parking past the Minh Ky/A Chau plaza on the left that is designated for Paris Bakery, which seemed like plenty when we last visited, but we can imagine it fills up from time to time. If THAT is full, then street parking in the residential areas will have to suffice. FYI: - Cash only. A place like this seemed to have existed for much longer than the majority of businesses out there, so it's understandable that they remain card-less. - Of all things for sale, they also have a shelf they've been looking to relinquish. It's a 9-cube shelf with maybe 5 having backs, selling for $450. If you want it, make a deal with them. I have my opinions about the price, but that's not appropriate for this review. - Service is fast. The sandwiches weren't immediately available upon paying, but all we had to wait was for maybe about 1.5 minutes. I can't guarantee that would be the average wait time, but we were the only customer there when we got there, but were followed by a few people. read more

The cash-only shop moved a few years ago, four blocks nearer to the "Magic Corner" of El Cajon Blvd. and Menlo Ave., about which more in a future review. - Bánh Mi - Paris Bakery's excellent, inexpensive sandwiches and coffee are prepared quickly by the ladies behind the counter. Bánh mi fillings are tasty and authentic, and the baguettes, baked from scratch in the back room, are often pulled directly from cooling racks to cutting board, their freshness telling in the bread's crisp, light texture and its pleasantly yeasty taste. - Croissant - The bakery makes their breads from scratch. However, though they also bake croissants in-house, Paris Bakery buys their croissant dough from Cordon Bleu Inc., aka Normandie Bakery of France, a wholesale bakery in the Signal Hill area of Long Beach, CA. When I discovered this, I was surprised and somewhat disappointed, because I'd been happy thinking that a team of master pâtissiers worked just around the corner from my house. It didn't help me to learn that almost every croissant served in San Diego is manufactured in the industrial bakeries of Orange and Los Angeles counties. Oh, well. I've still got Influx Café in Golden Hill, where croissants really are made by hand. - Rolls and Pastries - The place also sells something they call Raisin Bread. Imagine a sort of "monkey bread" made with large King's Hawaiian dinner rolls, but not that sweet, with raisins tossed in as the raw rolled dough is stuck together. It's better than it sounds. I like to pull away a piece, split and butter it, then warm it in a toaster oven, for something different with my morning coffee. Raisin-coconut rolls, made in short supply and sold out by mid-morning, are croissant dough that's dressed, coiled and baked to make a slightly chewy, moderately sweet bit of carbohydrate delight. The texture is similar to that of kouign-amman, but tenderer, and without the caramel-butter drench. Raisin-coconut rolls are my favorite pastries made by Paris Bakery. - Baguettes - And then, there are baguettes. So surprising is the quality of their taste and texture that one might call them "baguettes magique," or "magic wands." Despite the business' name, these aren't typical Parisian breads. They're made in the Vietnamese style, which, for my money, improves substantially upon what the French produce. They remind me of New Orleans-style French bread - Bud's Louisiana Café is a wholesale customer - with thin, delicate crusts that crackle when you squeeze the loaves, and airy, easy-to-chew interiors, resembling nothing so much as long, thin cushions. When there are people around my house, it's hard to keep this bread on the kitchen counter, so I'm likely to buy several baguettes if I can, by which I mean to say that availability at the source can be tricky. The secret is to get to Paris Bakery after the finished bread has rested, but before it starts to disappear, say, between 6 and 8 a.m. If you arrive too early, Johnny, the owner, will caution you that the bread isn't ready yet, that it needs time to cool. Say, "OK," order coffee and a breakfast banh mi, and while your sandwich is being made, walk out front, where you'll see - and smell - many dozens of baguettes, wrapped and packed for delivery to Vietnamese and American stores, shops, restaurants and delis all over San Diego County. Avoid the temptation to load those loaves into your car and drive away. Go back inside, have your breakfast and wait for your bread to cool. Arriving late one morning, I was beat out for the last baguette by a man who said he needed it to feed his family. To my discredit, I tried to talk the guy out of his baguette. This place has won my coveted crown for "Best Banh Mi of San Diego". Food alone I would rate it a 5/5 easily, but almost had to dock a star for the fact that they only take cash. Vegetables were fresh and plentiful, meat was fresh as well, and the pate was creamy and very clean. There was some kind of sauce on the sandwich as well that took it up another notch. Excellent sandwich, 10/10 easy. After years of searching, I crown this place winner of best banh mi in San Diego. When I picked up the sandwich, you know I had to pick up some pate chaud (puff pastries with chicken inside) that I saw in the display. These were also delicious, and I would guess that these were baked fresh in house as well. One of my early morning Go-To's is a Vietnamese bakery called "Paris Bakery" that makes some of the best French bread and bahn mi sandwiches in San Diego, and many other Vietnamese snacks and baked goodies. I got the House Special Banh Mi which has a good helping of ham, sliced Vietnamese meatloaf, and liver pate. The pickled veggies have the ideal ratio of sweet and tangy and also a crisp, crunch to every bite. I prefer a bit more butter-mayonnaise sauce. Seemed like the sandwich wasn't evenly slathered with it so some bits didn't have sauce. Nonetheless, love how baguettes are baked in house.
