Im a Freshman at UC Irvine and I ended up getting a really bad eye infection out of nowhere. Im not originally from here and I live on campus at the dorms. I looked up Park Place Optometry on the internet and found out it's down the street from UCI. I called the office and they were full that day, I explained what was wrong and the Dr. stayed late just to see me. Dr. Tran was very nice and I didn't feel rushed at all. Sure he speaks fast, but that doesnt matter to me. My insurance is terrible and the doc explained that my prescription meds would be very expensive, he knew as a student I could not afford it and he gave me samples of meds for me to treat my eyes for free. My infection cleared up in several days and I am one happy camper! Now a few other of my hallmates have gone to Dr.Tran for exams and sunglasses and we all love him! read more

Came in for an eye exam since I lost my glasses and running out of my contacts (wearing my last pair). I was able to be seen right away!!! THANK GOD since with out my eyes I am pretty much can't drive and can only see couple inches in front of me clearly. My contacts were irratating me and Dr. BIlly Tran gave me samples of Artificial tears and said I didn't have any eye infection & gave me samples of contacts & couple of different bottles of solutions to clean my contacts. He recommended not to use the generic brands of solution. Park Place has so many glasses to choose from and it was overwhelming but once I choose the frame the lenses were done in less then hour!!! Most optometrist can make you really good glasses, but not all of them are good doctors. I took my kid there for eye check up, hoping that the optometrist would explain her how the phone, TV and computer light can damage the eye. Instead he said those devises don't cause any damage!!!. Seriously, I guess he failed the exam when studying blue light and eye deterioration. I'm still in shock for all that he said, I'm so mad at it that I'm finally taking time to write this review. Just got a pair of glasses here. He made them in like ten minutes. Awesome. I am switching from my optometrist on campus cuz dr Tran is super cool. Plus they have great prices and are super nice and helpful. Five stars for convenience and great service. My visit was very efficient and I did not have to wait long. Dr. Tran was very knowledgable and helpful. He gave me some options as far as treating my allergies with OTC medications instead of expensive prescriptions. This office has the largest frame selection I have ever seen. You can select frames that are very affordable to very high end. I did not feel pressured to select a high end frame. The girl who fit me for my glasses was helpful and gave me prices on everything. This office really helps you with figuring out your insurance and even price matched a online discount service I have used before. The only thing that is preventing me from giving 5 stars is the gal who answers the phone comes off as a bit unfriendly and unwelcoming. Very disappointed. Dr. doesn't listen to you. He talks over you and wrote me a prescription much weaker than my current prescription and then he said it was to prevent me from not being able to see when I drive, but the problem is that my main need for contacts was for reading and now I have to wear glasses on top of my contacts to be able to read at work. Such as waste of my insurance and money. Don't go to him. read more

The doctor and staff is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. While they don't take all types of insurance, they do offer great prices. Don't be discouraged at the parking lot in the front if you don't find a spot, there is a garage next door. I'll definitely be going back. read more

i thought i would try this place out and was thoroughly disappointed. dr. tran talked way too fast and his front office staff were not very friendly. i ordered my contacts through this office and they gave me the wrong prescription boxes twice for my right eye. (it was supposed to be 6.75 they gave me 5.75!). then when i asked if i could get one more contact lense, since i had used two left lenses since the right ones were back ordered, they said no! what?!?! don't they get these lenses for patients to try? read more

The selection of frames is great and the doctor is nice. The front office staff is terrible. They are not interested in making customers happy in the least. Negative stars. Please let me preface this by saying I am genuinely writing this review out of concern. I do not want anyone to have the experience I did. Do your due diligence and read the one star reviews on yelp. I wish I did because they are very accurate for this guy. PLEASE DO NOT GO TO THIS OPTOMETRIST unless you want to waste your time, money, and deal with a very hostile, very manipulative hack who embodies everything wrong with our healthcare system. I am 3 months away from my MD. Dr. Tran is an absolute joke. I made an initial visit for a simple annual contact lense fitting.First of all, during my visit, Dr. Tran's incompetence became clear. He was talking too fast, dropping things constantly (to the point that I wonder if he was on some kind of stimulant), and rushing through the fitting at lightning speed. I have some drusen in one of my eyes, and he didn't even catch it until I told him about it. Then, the powers he gave me were completely off, but he wouldn't listen to my feedback and was rushing me out the door. Add to this his hostile attitude. When I asked simple medical questions about why he was recommending certain brands over others during that initial consultation, he had no literature and no scientific basis to his explanations besides a vague comment about risk of corneal hypoxia followed by ridiculous metaphors instead of hard evidence so I could make the best choice for my health. When I politely tried to ask more questions he CALLED ME AGGRESSIVE and said I had an attitude. Since when is politely asking questions about your health to a provider hostile. Since when is it ok for a provider to say that to a patient in any circumstance? I assure you it's not. It gets much worse. I ultimately agreed to try the different type of contact he kept recommending. I did my own research for a week speaking to a couple different optometrists and ophthalmologists I knew and doing a literature search. Ultimately I found out it wasn't absolutely essential for me to change, but these lenses were more oxygen permeable so I figured why not? I went back into the office a second time and told him my decision, but that I needed different powers because the prescription wasn't correct. I don't think he even has the skills to competently assess anyone, he ended up just prescribing me the same as my old prescription without doing any testing, saying I was wearing underpowered lenses for comfort. Maybe, maybe not. I see well enough I guess, but I don't think it's accurate bc he clearly couldn't assess it properly. Once again he was rushing me out the door after this follow up and gave me more contacts to try.He reluctantly gave me a rushed prescription (incorrectly written btw) and before I left gave me two boxes of lenses as he rushed me out of the office. I specifically asked "are these free and for me to try" and he said yes, then literally walked away. It gets better. A week or so later, I called asking to order the lense brand I finally decided on (I was initially going to order them from his office because I still trusted this provider to some extend) and I asked IF he could price match with target. He said yes. Then he said the only charges I would have would be for the fitting and the trial lenses. THE ONES HE SAID WERE FREE. $100+ dollars. I told him that was not what he said when I asked but he just denied it over and over. What a crook. I told him I was not paying for them. I have a doubt he was even trying to re-sell me something and make money off me. To cap all this off he once again told me I was a "difficult" patient on the phone, probably just for challenging his manipulation. I told him it was not appropriate for him to call anyone that and to send me my bill, I was done. I returned the remaining "free, trial" contacts, got a correct prescription (BY MY THIRD VISIT MIND YOU), and then found out that he had ALREADY ordered the contacts I simply asked if he could price match from target. Now he said I owed him for these too. Then he wouldn't write me a corrected prescription and give it to me, until I paid him first. Unbelievable. Sick, manipulative behavior. Ultimately he refunded me, but not without a lot of waste of time and energy on my part. In addition, he called me some muttered things like ridiculous under his breath while doing all this on my third visit. I am a very laid back individual. I have literally never experienced this treatment from someone in my life, let alone a healthcare provider. It's as if I asked him two questions he didn't know the answer to, he got defensive and nervous, and suddenly he was almost borderline harassing me and projecting. This guy is not a real doctor, he's a businessman trying to get what he can from you, please beware. Do your research and go elsewhere, there are great optometrists out there. Your eyes, your wallet, and your sanity will thank you. It's just a matter of time before malpractice comes his way. Will not be returning. read more

I've been seeing (no pun intended) Dr. Tran here at Park Place Optometry for years and I can't say I've ever had a better optometrist. He's incredibly knowledgeable and takes his time during exams to explain what's going on with your eyes, and answer any concerns you may have. When I see him and his staff I don't just feel like another customer, he knows his customers on a first name basis and his staff always makes me feel very welcome. Making appointments is easy and they are always respectful of your time. Parking can be challenging and Dr. Tran is well aware of this, he will be soon moving his office (in the immediate area of his current office) in order to make his office more convenient for his clients. His staff is always very nice and helpful when I need questions answered about my insurance or appointments needed and they'll always make time to help you pick the perfect pair of glasses. The selection of glasses and sunglasses is mind blowing, you will not be disappointed and bound to find the perfect pair! If you're looking for an optometry office to call home, look no further Park Place Optometry is perfect. read more

I really liked the doctor and the staff is very nice. The doctor took the time to explain to me that there's a better contact lens than the ones I'd been wearing for so long. Other doctors in the past just asked me what I wear and let me continue with the same brand, only changing the prescription if necessary. I ended up not liking the fit of the contacts after a couple of weeks and I went back, wasn't charged a penny neither was my insurance. The doc. gave me a tighter lens and was very patient about it. I love my new lenses so much better than the old ones now. I would definitely recommend this place :) read more

I just called today to find out if they would charge me correctly if I made an appointment and used my vsp benefits. The woman took my name to make sure I had vsp benefits at the beginning of the call. The call did not go well. She was saying that it was going to cost way more than my $20 copayment and was interrupting and being rude so I hung up. When I tried to make an appointment with another optometrist, I was informed that my benefits were on hold! I only made 2 phone calls to inquire and never even made an appointment, but park place put my benefits on hold. I had to call vsp to clear it up. When I called back, the woman would not even give me her first name. I told her she can give me her name or I will personally call the doctor and let him know about her customer service and she hung up on me and refused. I cannot comment on the doctors, but there is no way I would deal with this business again. read more

The Doctor was so accommodating... I came in as he was closing the office. I got something in my left eye and lost my left contact as I was rubbing. My left eye was really bothering me. He had me leaned back as he rinsed my left eye several times.. felt better afterward. He gave me a new brand of contact for the left eye. Told me to try it to see if it is more comfortable than my current brand. He said it is more breathable than my current contact lens. I offered to pay but he said no charge... Wow... got a free contact and he did not even charge for his time. I appreciate this eye doctor.. very professional and has heart. Will return in the future for sure. read more

I agree with all your comments, i don't know why i keep returning, but this is the last. the girls who work there are terrible, my husband and i schedule for Saturdays, because that's the best and only time that we have available. once again the girls there manage to mess it up and not care. 1. walked in, no smiling faces nor a simple "can I help you" 2. Dr check up was as simple as in and out, as one had said 3. my husband and i schedule for Saturdays, because that's the only time we had available. 4. we go to select our glasses, no one is around to help 5. once we've selected our glasses, i turn to seek attention from one of the girls, but their backs were facing us 6. i brought the two glasses up to the front counter, still no acknowledgement from the girls, finally got ones attention, made sure that i separated the two, one being his and the other mine - just so they wouldn't mess it up 7. they said they would be done in two weeks and someone will call 8. two weeks have passed, no call, so when i called to follow up, they said oh yes the glasses are in. 9. i go to pick up the glasses at my lunch hour and when i get there, they've only given me one set of glasses, i asked where are the other ones that belong to my husband. the girl says, oh they are not done yet. again, i asked when will they be done, in one week....then i will pay for both glasses when his is ready for pick up. 10. two weeks later, one girl calls and says, can your husband come into the office and pick out his glasses again, because the girl who is now on maternity leave has misplaced his glasses somewhere and we can't find it. aaggghhhh!!!! NEVER AGAIN, this was the worst, inconvenience and unprofessional experience ever....if the Dr wants this place to stay open, he needs to find better help. ***keep in mind, that this was a brief message and i didn't go into detail about the insurance issue. read more

I agree with other posts in that this optometrist speaks quickly. More importantly though, he speeds through eye exams and visits which is problematic if you have astigmatism, have had lasik or any non-standard eye issues. At the end of the exam he'll ask if you have questions, but you can see that he's already putting away your file and heading towards the exit. If you know your prescription and just want to order contacts or if you're a very simple case, this might be the place for you for speedy service. However, if you want an accurate exam and don't want to make a second and third trip because he keeps getting your prescription wrong, I would advise not to go here. Additionally, his staff are not on the friendly side. I've been there several times now (I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt) and each time they all seem like they're having a bad day. Standard wait time for new glasses is 2 weeks. Glasses are handed to you across the counter and you're expected to fit them yourself. Aside from him, the women who work there don't seem to have much training. The cost is the same elsewhere in Irvine, so why not go where you'll be treated more professionally? read more

This office is awesome. I had a really bad case of pink eye a few weeks ago... actually the doctor told me it was a bacterial infection. My family referred me to this doctor. I called to see if I can come in the same day but was told that the doctor was at a continuing education class. I was in a lot of pain so the staff called the doctor. Fortunately for me, the doctor was able to come in before leaving for his class. I told him I lost my job recently and therefore, I had no insurance. He waived my office visit fees and gave me some medications for my infection for free. I felt bad because I did not want Dr. Tran to work for free; after all, he is running a business. I will come back to pay him when I get a job. Dr. Tran went out of his way to call me that night to make sure I was getting better. I saw the doctor for the next 2 weeks for free until my infection was completely healed. The office is very busy whenever I came in for my office visits. Dr. Tran must be doing something right to have this many patients. My dad was right. This doctor is very professional and knowledgeable. read more
