P&O seems to be everything rolled into one. It's a café as well as a food and supply store. The exterior is wonderful and makes you feel you're eating at a really clean and polished junk yard (if that makes any sense). We went on a Sunday around brunch-time so it was hard to find seating even though there were technically three floors and a back area. I got the curried chicken sandwich with coleslaw and deviled eggs. The sandwich was perfectly assembled and the chicken inside was delicious. The coleslaw had too much mayonnaise for my tastes though. The sandwiches my friends got looked great too so I'll be looking to try some of their other things on their menu when I next come back. Came in with a friend for lunch on Black Friday after running from super early in the morning, and we were definitely looking to relax. We ordered a Shrimp BLT with caprese salad and a deviled egg (friend) and a Grilled Pimento Cheese sandwich with bacon and fruit salad (myself). I'm a little mad at myself for my bland order, but there is definitely some comfort in knowing your staples are satisfying! The pimento cheese was a little spicy and not very mayonnaise-y, my favorite. I need the ratio to lean a little cheesy for me to be content. Despite being starving from all our running, the sandwiches both tasted delicious, and we finished our meal in record time. Good thing too, as they are busy, and have a constant influx of patrons waiting for your table! Ambiance-wise, we chose an outdoor table, thanks to the very mild fall we had this year. It is a very calm and rustic environment that we really enjoyed after all the hustle-bustle of the morning. All-in-all, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. My only real complaint is the expense to change your slaw to another side. Two dollars to exchange house-made coleslaw to a very small bowl of fruit seemed a little steep. Parker and Otis has been on my list to try for years now and I was lucky enough to try them out on my birthday while exploring Durham. The store is a girl dream land... wine, gifts, kitchen, bath, paper goods, food, chocolates, and coffee (oh my!). We arrived on a holiday weekend ~11AM. We grabbed a drink out of the cooler, ordered a sandwich, and made our way outside to find a seat. The service was absolutely on point, which, I was surprised because the place was pretty busy. All of their sandwiches come with a side of slaw, which, I wasn't excited about but it turned out to be better decent. Maybe I was just a noob, but I think they should offer one of there many tasty looking sides in the cooler as a side option, even if there was a slight upcharge. I got the avocado but on wheat, their wheat bread is very much like Rye, and I think they should let their customers know that because I hate rye bread. I will definitely go back, maybe order something that isn't on wheat bread int he future. read more

When I first encountered Parker and Otis I didn't know what to make of the place. It's a pretty odd place, in that country store yuppie kind of a way. I'm a fan. I've never been to the restaurant part, always for the store. When I lived in France I got a taste for fine jams, and Parker and Otis is one of the best places around for those lovely bits. They've got a small variety of basic sundries, but everything is of universally high quality. You pay a higher price for the gourmet-small angle, but that's to be expected. This is a pretty interesting place. I was here the day after my brother's wedding. It looks industrial on the outside which was cool. I walked inside and whoa; there is A LOT of stuff going on in here. There is coffee and espresso to the right of the entrance. There is a ton of stuff to buy as you walk in further. My fiancé bought a couple of cookbooks, but they have all kinds of candy, board games, and knickknacks in there. I forgot to take pictures of the food because there was so much stuff to look at do enjoy my random pictures lol. To order, you place your order in at their register and then you seat yourself. I had a BLT with eggs on it and a coke. There are pretty interesting in there, especially different pelegrino drinks. There are sides that you can order as well. I saw egg salad, deviled eggs, I believe it was pesto on pasta and a few other things. We seated ourselves (there were 7 of us and they helped us put the tables together); you have to get your own silverware and condiments. Everyone seemed to enjoy their food, I know I did! My favorite part of the restaurant is that they have truffle chocolates! They range from 2.50 per chocolate to almost 5 per chocolate. I got four of them which were 2.50 and 3 dollars. Parker and Otis is a wonderful spot for brunch. The food is always above par and the portions are generous. The environment is what I enjoy most -- in warm weather there is seating on a very large outer deck contained by interesting forged iron railings and ornamental details. The interior space is warm and inviting. Patrons bring dogs, kids, the New York Times and a general spirit of neighborliness. They have an interesting selection of good wines, various gourmet items and one of my favorites -- letterpress cards. The ordering process is a little confusing, it gets congested around the ordering station and the coffee bar and some of the staff could work on their customer service skills. But, overall it's one of my favorite places to hang out on a Sunday morning. read more

I love the food at Parker and Otis. It's fresh, flavorful, and delicious. I normally get the tomato and mozzarella sandwich which is more than enough food. I tend to forget to sub out the coleslaw. I am not a coleslaw fan in general, but even without a side the sandwich is plenty. I think they could do two things better. First, the seating is terrible. Outside seating on a nice day is comfortable and spacious. But if you have to eat inside in the back? Awful. Tables are crowded and uncomfortable. On my last trip I snagged the last table in the back of the store avoiding having to sit on what looks like the most uncomfortable set of benches. Second, the food delivery is a mess. They come out and yell out your name. What this means is that every time food starts to appear I have to stop my conversation and pay attention to see if that's my food or not. It's disruptive and pointless. I don't get why they can't use a number system as other places do. read more

I've been here a million times over. Why? Because this place is no-fail. Pimento cheese sandwiches to die for. Large selection of candy bars- good stuff, like the local chocolate makers' Eskazu chocolates. And there is also beer and wine and a bunch of foodie cooking items and syrups and kitchen gadgets and nice hand lotions and toys and magnets and cocktail napkins with snarky phrases on them. They sell Meyer's Clean Day products, and I always leave with a million hand soaps and countertop srays. Orange Clove is my favorite fragrance. It's always busy here, but you never have to really wait. Service is always pretty fast and very friendly. It is not cheap at Parker & Otis, but the food is well worth the price. read more

I have to say Parker and Otis was a good choice, the atmosphere was great and the food was amazing. I didn't expect it to be that good but I was wrong, the service was good. As far as prices they were on par with the portion size. You have the option of sitting outside in the patio or you can go through the old fashioned store and dine in there. Parker and Otis was one of the first places that I discovered when I moved to Durham several years ago . . . and now I realize why I was so slow to start trying different area restaurants--it was so good that I'd go once a week at least! Parker and Otis is one third county-general-store-mixed-with-sur-la-table, one third deli-style-southern-sandwich-shop, and one third coffee-counter-slash-sweets-shop. And my oh my I love all three. It definitely takes a while to stroll around the store and get a feel for it, which is perfect because the lines can be long, especially for brunch. Their grilled pimento cheese is a favorite for lunch--seriously, they have awesome pimento cheese--coming from a girl who has lived in the south most of her life. All of their breakfast selections are delicious, but I love their cheddar biscuits so I usually get one of the egg items that comes with one. They also have a selection of dips and side salads that you can choose from. Everything I've had has been really good (did I mention the pimento cheese?). I'm not a fan of their indoor seating, but luckily, this is Durham and you can sit outdoors 9 months out of the ear. They have a nice patio that's really spacious with picnic tables and the like. There isn't a view, but the patio itself is really nice (and shady so not too hot, even in the summer). The general store area has all sorts of cute kitchen items, specialty food, local items (good selection of local beer too), and knick-knack type gifts. It's fun to browse around, although it is pretty pricey. People from out-of-town really seem to like coming here because this part is so cute--mixed with the good food! Tucked behind Brightleaf Square in Downtown Durham is a little gem that I've waited too long to visit. Parker and Otis is a huge space with ample seating and a store with a great selection of gifts and knick knacks for purchase. I got the tomato soup and potato salad and my friend got a salami and avocado sandwich. I loved the potato salad, it had the perfect amount of mayo and spices as to not make it liquidy, and the tomato soup was good, but not that much flavor. But I tried a little of my friend's sandwich and immediately regretted not getting one. The bread was fluffy and toasted, and the avocado and salami made a perfect combo with the sauce they added gibing my mouth a great party of flavors. After lunch I tried a strawberry and chocolate truffle that was so creamy and sweet I wanted to buy another one right then and there. The only drawback of Parker and Otis? It's a sandwich place, not a sit down restaurant. I had been shopping for 3 hours and really wanted to sit down and relax, and I thought that this was a sit down place. I was surprised to see it wasn't. Normally wouldn't be a problem for me, but that day I was exhausted. I plan to visit again when I want to get out and walk and browse the little shop so I will come again when I have a ton of energy and want a great sandwich! read more

Parker & Otis is such an adorable coffee shop/cafe/specialty store. You don't realize from the outside how big it really is and how much they offer! First of all, they have great food! It's mostly sandwiches and salads, but they are really hearty sandwiches with creative twists. My favorite is the turkey sandwich with pepper jelly! Their tuna salad is also one of the best I've tried. Sometimes I get the 3 salad plate so I can mix and match from their "deli" window. Since I'm gluten free (celiac), when I want to get a sandwich I bring my own gluten free bread and they make it for me on that! I know it's not a dedicated gf kitchen, but I just ask them to put a piece of butcher paper down or something so at least it's a clean surface. I never get sick. Also, they have a coffee bar in the back. Chai latte and peach iced tea are a couple of my go-to's. As I wait for my order I love to look around the store and all the cute mugs, cards, kitchen gadgets, bags....and more!! There is also plenty of outdoor and indoor seating. I would describe this place as an upscale deli/cafe/candy store that also has a lovely and whimsical selection of fancies, stationery, soaps, children's gifts, and kitchenwares. I went here for lunch with my sister, who went with the curried chicken salad sandwich. I went with one of the weekly sandwiches -- turkey, bacon, cheddar, mango chutney. Both sandwiches were fresh, quite ample (we only finished half of our sandwiches), and tasty. I commented to my sister that this place is a good deal compared to Panera. While Panera is that reliable go-to, their sandwiches aren't made with as much love and for a similar price, the portions are not as generous as at Parker and Otis. The accompanying coleslaw was impressive in terms of the various cabbages in it, but I think I will substitute chips next time and pay a little extra. The service was cordial, the wait time for our sandwiches not too long. I did note that the seating area was quite crowded, and there must certainly be times when you have to wait to sit, so I would avoid this place during peak times/seasons if you don't want the hassle. Afterwards, we browsed the store, and found some hilarious, unique greeting card, a great selection of holiday decorations, and some tasty looking treats and teas. They also have a wide selection of pricey soaps, lotions, and balms, but no testers that I could find. Finally, it's a nice touch that they carry some Carolina-specific products (eg, honey). We went here for breakfast a few Saturdays ago. The food was delicious (we did the turkey/pepper jelly sandwich, the pick-3 salads), and the coffee is good. Like other people have said, there's tons of cool things to distract you with - like an upscale cracker barrel. However, I have two major complaints. -The seat-yourself style dining just was not working. Maybe it's a lot better when its warm outside and you can utilize the extensive outdoor seating, but we were competing for tables. And no one wants to compete for tables with all the mid-to-late 20 something moms and dads rocking two strollers, on probably their only lunch outing with friends in weeks. -I know that the brunching hour in Durham can be incredibly frazzled, but we had a really hard time getting the staff to explain the system to us. Do we order first? Get a table? Do we bus our own dishes? I honestly found the process a little confusing. Overall, delicious food and beautiful space, but not my pick during the busy hours. The specials and regular menu are both amazing, the atmosphere and hometown feel make you comfortable enough to stay for hours. My two favorites are the Pimento cheese sandwich and the banana/peanut butter/bacon/honey sandwich. Sides are good (cole slaw, pasta salad, cucumber and tomato salad, etc), but the sandwiches are what I go for. There are plenty of desserts to choose from, as well. While you wait for your food, you can check out all the gifts and goodies the store has to offer. From hard to find treats, to gourmet goods, PO offers a little bit of everything. It's walking distance from my apartment, so I visit there a lot. The coffee is pretty good, although the baristas are often cranky. The folks at the food counter are much friendlier and really helpful. Sometimes they have Latta's Eggs in one of their refrigerators, which saves me a trip to the coop, Whole Foods, or farmers market. Best underrated sandwich in the Triangle Parker & Otis is always a sure bet for a great sandwich at lunch. From their curried chicken sandwich, to BLT, to shrimp po-boy, to egg salad sandwich - I've never had a bad meal. The accompanying home-made coleslaw may seem weak at first (I know I would prefer fries, chips or a nice side salad), but the tangy taste grows on you, and unless I really just want to try one of their other sides I'm fine with pairing it with coleslaw (which comes complimentary, all other sides are extra). Parker & Otis is a great standby lunch stop, especially when the weather is nice: grab a great bit to eat on their patio. If the weather isn't as conducive, dining inside is also a treat as you sit among some great culinary treats in their store. read more

The space is large with many tables inside and out, though if you are there with a big group it can be a bit tough to seat everyone. Poor form for the people perched with their laptops taking up a 4-top not even eating when it's really busy. Have some consideration. Breakfast plates are reasonably priced, but sandwiches are a little bit more expensive than expected for what you get. Atmosphere is fun and lively. BLT with over-easy eggs! This is my staple brunch food in Durham. It comes with sour dough bread, mayo and delicious bacon. It's the kind of sandwich you think you can mimic at home, but never quite can get it the same. I order avocado slices on the side and add them in. The place is fun, but I never buy anything else but their fresh food; all their gifts and trinckets just seem unnecessary. Fun to browse through, but unnecessary. I went for the white bean avocado sandwich was delicious and a lot like something I often make for myself at home. Loved the coleslaw and could have eaten a lot more if given the chance. Paired with the fresh brewed Paris iced tea which was ok - but a little bitter. I don't usually sweeten my tea but this could have used it. Overall a great option for lunch in Durham. read more

They have a great selection of wines from around the world at reasonable price points, a respectable, albeit small selection of microbrews, and delicious gourmet food items that would honor any picnic basket on a warm day. Their candy selection is massive and, well, pretty, and both the chocolate and baked goods counters certainly caught our eye. Add to all that greeting cards, gift books, candles, sauces, and other sundry items for the home. An entire wall section is dedicated to Mrs. Meyers cleaning products, which smell so good you might want to eat them. What's not to love about this place? I must admit that I am on a bit of a pimento cheese kick during this trip. I've never seen it on menus back home on the West Coast, but it is ubiquitous here in North Carolina. Parker & Otis has a substantial homemade pimento cheese spread that I've been enjoying on just about anything I can - crackers, celery, apples, my fingers. Jes and I have also been working our way through their chicken, apple, and bleu cheese salad. Yum! While I've not tried the sandwich shop, I am totally digging the outdoor seating area. Big, solid tables sit protected from the elements on the massive covered patio. What a great space! Being from Portland, any multi-season outdoor seating is a huge plus for me. Park & Otis is a really fun place for gifts, coffee, and brunch. There are a lot of fun candies, journals, stationery, purses, locally made products, etc. to browse through. I will say that a lot of the items are on the pricy side. One locally made jam I like is at least $5 less at the Durham Farmer's Market than it is here. I think their food and coffee is reasonably priced, however. I almost always get the "turkey, bacon, and avocado" sandwich. Service is pretty quick, and there is usually enough seating on the back deck, although I can imagine that gets sparse during high volume times. read more

On my quest to visit every possible brunch place during my visits to Durham I came to P&O for Saturday brunch. Before I could even begin to even think about food I was mesmerized by the store itself. Love the selection of fine chocolates, gourmet foods, Mrs. Meyer's cleaning stuff, cards and everything in between. I felt a sudden urge to put together gift baskets and send them off to relatives. Cracker Barrel? Please...this place is not like Cracker Barrel, which I think is somewhat of a tiny insult. It's adorable. Onto the food itself...we ordered brunch and I got the open-faced egg sandwich. It was great only I couldn't cut the edges of the toast underneath with my fork so it was rather awkward to eat. Wish they'd just given me another piece of toast so I could have eaten it like a regular sandwich. Delicious regardless. The BF ordered the usual biscuit + gravy and loved it. I had food envy for the woman next to me who got the pancakes. They looked incredible. The coffee here is great, too, btw. Note that if you're looking for belt-busting, make-my-ass-bigger portion sizes, this is not your place. The portion sizes are what they should be...normal. And the food is not swimming in grease. Amen to that. My only complaint is that we sat in the back eating area of the store and there was zero heat in the place, even though the rest of the store was fine. I know they store the wine in this part of the store but damn, it was cold. This is probably ok in warmer parts of the year but I don't like eating breakfast and needing to wear my coat. Just sayin.' Have a good breakfast and give yourself some time to wander the store. And if you like chocolate and bacon try Vosges "Mo's Chocolate Bacon Bar" or their same version of pancake mix. Parker and Otis - great food, awesome staff, plenty of parking in the lot behind it/to the side of it, awesome store inside! The architecture/design of the store/restaurant is pretty unique. I love coming here for breakfast/brunch and I especially love their deviled eggs. I love their toast, tomatoes and greens with 2 eggs however you like them is really good. Their white cheddar grits (though was that couscous?) were also delicious. And I love their bacon (though I could be biased. I'll love bacon always). The meals are decently priced. The only downside is that it can get pretty crowded. My friend and I had to stand there for a while just trying to grab a table. And when you're competing with a dad and two young daughters who are eager to find a seat... well how can one compete with that? Their items in their store can serve as unique gift ideas, however, I've found them to be a little on the expensive side. They also have a little deli/bakery section, but I have not had a chance to try those. read more

Parker and Otis reminds me of Foster's, especially the Chapel Hill one: rustic place you can get food and other things at. Unlike both Fosters, the store area is much larger, with lots of various gift-shop related things. The food is generally good, and it's easy to find a nice outside table to eat at. Overall a generally nice place right in downtown Durham. read more

Awesome place. Very neat. Great atmosphere. Great place for lunch or brunch. My wife and I tried this place for the first time on Saturday for lunch. There is a good amount of parking around the restaurant, either on the street or at nearby lots. Very close to Brightleaf Square. We both ordered a sandwich. I tried the Curried Chicken Salad on Wheat bread and my wife had the Turkey with Avocado (left off the bacon) sandwich on Wheat. The turkey sandwich was a great size with plenty of turkey. We both were really impressed with the quality of the turkey meat. I liked my Curried Chicken salad sandwich although I'll probably try some of the other sandwiches for a while. The chicken salad didn't have as much flavor as I would have expected but it was still good. I also thought the wheat bread they used could have been a little better. The bread tasted a little dry. All of the sandwiches come with a side of coleslaw. I thought the coleslaw was really good. If you don't want the coleslaw, you can substitute another side (i.e., fruit cup, roasted vegetables, etc.) for $2 more. They also have a selection of chips you can purchase as well. Hands down the best outdoor seating in downtown Durham! I love P&O!!! Everything on the menu is so tasty and I love that the outdoor seating is plentiful and not too loud. I can't wait to try out the brunch menu here. But as far as good goes, I am obsessed with the spinach saled (who knew a simple salad could have so much flavor) and I love the Turkey and Stonewall Kitchen Red Pepper Jelly. That red pepper jelly sets this sandwich apart by adding a level of sweetness to otherwise tangy sandwich. Just writing about it makes me want to go and grab a sandwich for lunch. My only suggestion would be to offer half portions on the sandwiches. I can never finish a whole sandwich. So it would be nice to get a half sandwich with a salad for lunch and not have to take a to-go box. But that's a #FirstWorldProblem so no matter what, this place is delicious and I will carry whatever I have to in order to keep enjoying it. read more
