I have been trying to find good old-fashioned pasta that is affordable and predictable. This place did it just right. They offer some basic dishes that are good portions for the price. We had take-out one night and got a variety of pastas with a variety of sauces and we were pleased with the price and flavors. Went back for lunch, and was even happier! Went here last night for dinner. They weren't real busy when we got there but it did fill up later. Later it was, when we actually were served. It took forever to get our food, other people that came in after us were getting their meals before us. The house dressing for the salad and antipasta is plain boring, get oil and vinegar on the side. The paella (??) is good and a decent size portion that can be split between two adults. 5 stars all the way! Where to start? So my boyfriend and I decide to try pasta connection for the first time. We arrived 15 minutes before they closed and the owner Yadira welcomed us in! She sat us down, gave us some history about the business, talked about their special dishes and made us feel warm and appreciated. Yadira is the true meaning of customer service. Oh man. I think something went wrong with our visit/ take out order with all these 4-5 stars going on. So we got a few items, including mozzarella sticks. They were out of the sticks... but couldn't refund us the difference after we had paid for some reason. They instead just gave us 2 orders of garlic cheese bread. Unfortunately for us, that was the only good thing we had. The other 3 meals were horrendous. Spaghetti with marinara and meatballs. What kind of sauce did I just eat. Sure wasnt anything remotely close to marinara. It was horrible. I cant even describe the taste. With the likes of Mama Ds and even Al's NY Pizza so close, they are the better options with Als being much cheaper for much better food. I wont describe the other two meals because they were inedible. (shudder) The pasta seemed fresh and soft. That was the another "good thing" i guess. Came here on a Friday night, we were seated right away. Food came quickly and overall was decent. The one area this place is lacking is service. Our waitress was far from friendly. Maybe it was because she was busy, or she was having a bad night, but she never came to check on us or even looked in our direction while we were eating. I had to ask for refills when we were done eating as she walked away from the table. Our glasses had been empty for more than half of our meal. I have waitressed and I feel that a tip is earned based on quality of service. She definitely earned a $0. My advice... This is an understated, hidden gem. It has an old world and old school charm that is hard to find. The food is authentic that is true to its Argentinian-Italian roots. This is one of the few places that I have found that serve beef sweetbreads which are included in their grilled meat plate called "parrillada". Pasta Connection is nothing like the Americanized Italian food restaurants. Pasta Connection makes their own pastas so it is always fresh. I personally love the spinach raviolis and the tretrasini (not sure how to spell it). For the newbies that are meat lovers you have got to taste the pampa steak. Soo delicious! Adding to the list are the empanadas that are also very good. You should never deny trying the desserts. All the desserts that they serve are great. Like the tiramisu, flan, mil hojas and chaja. But if you are interested in the breakfast you have got to try the home fries! There's nothing like Pasta Connection. Their food is family oriented from the recipes to the workers. This place is so tasty! This is my go-to place for pasta; they make it fresh daily. The loaf of bread & chimichurri sauce served with the meal is fantastic! The husband gets the salmon & fettuccine in Alfredo sauce, it never disappoints. I've had the steak a few times, it was an A++ every time. I've also had the Chicken Marsala which was yummy too. I really like about 5 things on the menu, those are outstanding, putting it in a class all by itself, other things are just ok. Maggiano's is also at least twice the price and I have been disapointed there more than once. Anyway, back to PC---if you stick to things they do well, you will be fine. I have experienced some inconsistencies with the cooking, I think a new chef was being trained, but the 4 mainstays that are always excellent is the #36, a meat stuffed pasta topped with a mushroom wine sauce, that is amazing. Second, the #18 which is a italian sausage, mushrooms, onion, and bell peppers over linguini dish is excellent. Third, either the Paella ( i ask em to go light on the peas, which can be a bit much) 4th Chicken Cacciatore are all pretty safe bets. I would love to start trying some argintinian food, but whenever I go, I get drawn back to italian-lol...one last thing, if you don't know about that little ramekin they give you with the bread--that's an awesome dipping sauce (called chimichurra, they sell it to go too, if ya really like it) for the bread, stick a fork in there and get some of the green stuff at the bottom and spread that on your warm french bread, its way better than butter (wow! never thought I'd say something was better than butter...) but this stuff is.. Update: this place is getting ready to close down and they haven't found a new location. I don't know if I am following a chef around, but the last 3 times I have gone there, I have recieved the pasta just topped off with the marinara sauce...which sucks, I don't know if they changed their menu or if I am just getting unlucky......hoever if they are going to take shortcuts, I guess I can just find somewhere else to eat, cause the price hasn't gone down, yet the product quality certainly has....you either need to go back to the old sauce or train your pasta chefs better, cause the #36 is NOT even close to what it used to be I don't think I can quite go to 2 stars, but I am tempted. read more

I have always driven past this place but finally I made it in. We orderd the the fried mazzarella for an appetizer. It was ok just one big square of battered cheese with marinara sauce...breading was too thick for my taste but who could not eat fried meltey cheese?! We just so happen to come on Gnocci night so of course I had to try the hand made gnocci. You can order it with any sauce you like and it comes with a side salad. I asked for 1/2 red and 1/2 alfredo but apparently they cant do 1/2 1/2 unless you want the red on top of the white making a pink sauce..... Not sure why they couldnt just ladel the alfredo on one side and the marinara on the other side but whatever I guess.....I stuck with the Marinara and got a side of alfredo. The gnoccis were yummy I have never had fresh ones before these were alot more pasta like and less fluffy and squishy like the ones you can buy at vons. The marinara was good and the Alfredo was very good. It wasnt just butter fat flavor it had actual cheese flavor to it. Im usually not a big fan of alfredo sauce since it is sooo heavy but Yum glad I got a side of it. The pesto they serve with the bread was def a hit. I even purchased a jar of it to take home with me. My BF had the lasagna fresca. Not what he was anticipating, and not very cheesey it had more alfredo sauce and spinach pasta than anything. But all in all pretty good first time experience. So I should start off saying that I went to this restaurant assuming a full-on Italian experience, so my rating might be a little skewed. After all, if you go somewhere really expecting (and most importantly, CRAVING) something, if you're not given what you want it's really hard to leave satisfied. First off, the service was great. No complaints there. Second, I ordered the meat lasagna (w/ a salad). Before I got my entree I was given some bread which was delicious. It was warm and just the ratio of crispy to fluffy. The dipping oil was awesome too. The salad was a little underwhelming in that it looked like they just took some garden variety greens and threw it in a bowl. No real prep or anything. But it's a side salad, so I can let that slide. Finally, the entree. Ok, how do I put this...if you put it down in front of me and told me it was a burrito, I would have believed you. I would have NEVER guessed it was supposed to be lasagna. That's not to say that it didn't taste good, but it didn't really satisfy my craving for lasagna. I was also a little disappointed when I realized almost literally HALF of the plate was just cheese and sauce. I poked around it a bit and was surprised to find there were no more noodles or meat. I was standing in front of him and he rudely walked right up to me without saying excuse me. I had to jump out of his way or else we would have literally bumped into me. Hands down the BEST breakfast in all of orange county. Cheesy home fries are the greatest treat. I usually get the Italian omelet which uses their house marinara and a nice tasty sausage covered in motzerella all held together in perfectly cooked eggs. I've been coming here since 1991 when The restaurant was located on the corner of 19th and Harbor. I'm saddened to leave this review and hope the wonderful owners read it and make necessary changes. The food here is always great; always delicious and hot. I've known Martin (chef) since I started coming here and have NEVER had a bad meal. Unfortunately, the service lacks, BIG TIME! Is it Villa Roma bad? No, however, it has become Argentine poor, which is fairly typical of Argentine restaurants. It is, unfortunately, a far cry from the great service one was afforded in the past at this restaurant. I couldn't have been seated any closer to the front on a very slow late afternoon/early evening and not have the water filled without practically begging for it. 3 stars based on outrageously delicious food; lost two stars on the far below average service. read more
