Still my nominee for the most overrated restaurant in St. Louis. I loved Gerard Craft's other restaurants, but this place cries "sitting on your laurels" to such an extent that I half expected to see Craft himself in a chair perched high above the fray, happily sitting on a pile of green wreaths. (But that would assume he's paying attention to this operation). My criticism: * meal took 40 minutes to serve * they served my soup with the entree (never bothering to ask when I wanted it) * minestrone had hardly any cranberry beans, or much of anything except giant chunks of uninspiring tomato * our mushroom pizza had hardly any mushrooms * house red tasted like it had been sitting near a stove or maybe just left open for too long; $9 for a glass of very blah Italian wine * ravioli was undercooked; we sent it back; came back...undercooked * papparedelle with smoked pork was too salty, vinegary, and cloying I could still stomach this place if it were fun. If it were on the hill w/ a charming welcoming proprietor and genuinely friendly staff, but nooo. The staff just seem bored, distracted, eager to amuse each other, mostly indifferent to customers, except when they're offering you a clever quip or two. This review is solely based on the tiramisu. I always try to get some at Italian places, and Pastaria didn't disappoint. The menu says it's "Nonna _______'s" recipe, and I have to say, she makes a mean tiramisu. Even if it tasted like her secret was to double the amount of butter in the recipe. It was fantastic. Love watching your food being prepared? Well then, you have to sit at the bar and watch the chef cook your pasta or make your pizza. The atmosphere is very light and casual and the food is just as great with GF options as well :D Pictured is the Canestri Cacio e Pepe & Salume Beddu Nduja. The pasta was alright, primarily tasting of butter, cheese, and pepper. If you have a chance, try something else. There truly wasn't anything special about this dish. Honestly, sitting at the bar and watching all the food coming out, the ravioli looked and smelled the best. It seemed to also be ordered the most. The pizza on the other hand, was delicious. If you like a good kick, then you must try the Salume Beddu Nduja. If there is even a small chance you might want it, just take the leap. You won't be disappointed. The only draw back is that it isn't a very large pizza for the price and all you want is more once you have eaten it all. If I were to come back, I would definitely stick with the pizza, but most definitely try a different pasta dish. read more

Dinner there with family was great. The pasta was cooked perfectly - al dente! I had the Pistachio Ravioli and it was amazing. The complexity of flavors balanced nicely. And it had just the right portions. We also had the house wine which was good. The one thing they could have done better was the bread that was served before the meal. It was just basic white bread, nothing special and reminded me of white sandwich bread. The service was good and efficient and she gave us good recommendations. The atmosphere is loud and cozy. This place still has the best bread of any Italian restaurant I've tried in St Louis. The pasta is equivalent to places like Katie's and some of the restaurants in the Pietro's family, but the bread outshines all of them. Bread aside, the food is solid and they have a decent medium size wine list. It gets busy, so best make a reservation or go at a weird hour. They do have a validated parking garage so no need to worry about Clayton parking meters read more

Pastaria is always busy for a very good reason...the food is amazing. I'm usually pretty critical when it comes to Italian restaurants. STL has a lot of over priced Italian food. On top of that, I pretty much always avoid Italian cause I immediately think "BLAANNNNNDD." I even yell it like that in my head. But Pastaria completely destroys the mold with fresh ingredients and plenty of flavor. We were only a party of two for a Friday night date and got seated pretty quickly. If you come here with a group of 3+ expect to wait. I was actually surprised we didn't have to wait at all. As far as drinks go they have a decent beer, wine and cocktail list. They were out of the ingredients I wanted for a cocktail so opted for one of their local draft beers. For a starter we got the roasted brussels sprouts. Nothing that you can't easily make at home...I'd recommend ordering something more unique. For the main dish I got the The Roman pizza which features tomato, garlic & bacon amongst a few other goodies. Once I read bacon and garlic I knew it was a match made in heaven. It was easily one of the best Pizzas I've ever had. Period. With the Neapolitan Pizza craze I find myself eating a lot of really tough and flavorless crust. Pastaria figured it out! Their crust was amazing and not tough to chew. My date got the Chitarra al Pomodoro pasta which had a clear and delicious tomato+basil flavor. I promptly ate the leftover pasta later that night. I don't have much self control when it comes to left overs but can you blame me? Overall an amazing experience. Service had a few hiccups but they were swamped. Since this pandemic has "let up" we have ventured out to try new restaurants and we have dined at Pastaria on 2 prior occasions. Both were very good experiences and would have rated very high reviews. Over the Thanksgiving holiday we had out of town guests in town and made reservations at Pastaria (approximately) 2 weeks ahead for a party of 8. Because the on-line reservation program limited us to parties of 4, we made 2 reservations of 4 each. Note: my wife attached a note to the reservation that we were a family party of 8 and wanted to sit together, but the reservation program limited us to parties of 4. Days before the reservation we called Pastaria several times to ensure they received the request, but repeatedly received a message that the voicemail mailbox was full. When we arrived, they explained they were unable seat us together and further explained that we should have known to call after 4. I suppose the attached note that accompanied the reservation wasn't enough, I also suppose we should have known that they never check their voicemail, or they would have known it's impossible to leave a voicemail when the box is full. So, they sat us at 2 different tables, we could "kinda" see a few of our family members seated at the other table but completely impossible to have any type of family talks. So: * Menu is limited, but the food is very good * Table service, very good, our server was Kevin, and he was very attentive * The customer service aspect was just awful We'll explore other Clayton area restaurants next time read more

This review is for brunch! Service 5/5 We were seated right away when we got in at 10:30 am on a Saturday. The staff was friendly and attentive. Food: 4/5 I was a wee disappointed by the Wood Oven baked eggs. It comprised of two baked eggs in either an amatriciana or pomodoro sauce and accompanied with bread for dipping. We choose the amatriciana which had a great tartness from the tomatoes, however the portions were SO small- just a tiny little mini skillet. The breakfast pizza more than made up for the baked eggs! This was AUTHENTIC Italian pizza- made fresh with chewy delightful dough, layered with tomato sauce, and topped with fontina cheese, garlic and a nice sunny side egg on top. I can never eat that faux breakfast pizza you expect with scrambled eggs and random bits of sausage. MY LIFE HAS BEEN CHANGED! FYI they still serve gelato even in the morn. We should've taken our Uber driver seriously when he was vehemently trying to convince me to not go here. We should've left when we waiting outside for over an hour past our reservation time. We should've left when we were sitting at the table flailing our hands around for attention. But we didn't. The food was mediocre at best. I ordered the braised short rib, and while the meat was cooked well the polenta was so runny i was thinking of signing it up for the Boston marathon. I've been following chef Gerard Craft's tweets about Pastaria for many months now... trip to Italy, practice pizzas in his backyard, choosing plates and silverware, etc., and it was so much fun to be there on opening weekend. The space is wide open, casual and inviting. All the pasta is made at the front of the restaurant, and there's a gelato counter with some amazing flavors. Tonight they had basil (wow), birthday cake (with chunks of cake in it), banana sesame, salted caramel, goat cheese, pistachio and others. The food was delicious. We tried a salad, pasta with cheese and pepper, pasta with bolognese sauce and a margherita pizza. The cheese and pepper pasta was really creamy and a little spicy... so good. The pizza crust might have been my best part of the meal... just perfect and with a slight char on the bottom. The bolognese had a bit of a smoky salami flavor which we thought was interesting. There was a ton of staff - looked liked there were 4 or 5 restaurant managers walking around - and our server was efficient, friendly and knowledgeable about the dishes. We really enjoyed our first visit to Pastaria and look forward to going again very soon. UPDATE, 9 PM: We just ate our gelato that we got to go. Wow. Best gelato I've had outside Italy. If you are thinking of going to Pastaria, please read about my experience. I rarely post reviews on restaurant, but I need to share because this was my hands down worst experience in a restaurant. My wife and I arrive early for our reservation, we planned on getting a drink before our table was ready. They were able to seat us right away. A woman stopped by our table to fill our water glasses and said our server would be right there. Fifteen minutes later as another server is walking by, we ask if she is our server. She said no, she would find out. I could tell she was busy, I felt bad asking her as she was running around. I waited another five minutes and said something to someone who appeared to be a manager or lead at the counter They apologized and I said no worries, we just wanted to order some drinks. A different manager came over to get our drinks and appetizers. At this time, the server we checked with earlier came over and actually rolled their eyes. As the manager walked away to put our order in, she followed him, glared at us and pointed at us for about 5 minutes. She brings over bread, tells us that "our server was tied up" and she would help us. She proceeds to ignore us and the other manager has to come over to take our order. She couldn't even take our order. I've never felt like I was actually unwelcome in a dining experience. We had to wave her over to get any attention. We definitely noticed how attentive she was to her other tables, apparently we offended her and because of that our service was abysmal. I've had plenty of experiences with busy servers and I can certainly understand when they can't get to our table frequently. They work hard and are usually underpaid, but good golly the eye rolling, finger pointing, frequent stops at all her other tables and then quickly turning away from us was just plain insulting. The manager that took our order apologized at the end about the wait. Sure, thanks. It wasn't the wait that was frustrating, it was the service. The server couldn't even take our order. The food was fine, not amazing. The ricotta bites were delightful and will be missed. Certainly not worth the service. There are dozens of excellent Italian restaurants across St. Louis City and County. Please patronize a restaurant on the Hill or several other family owned restaurants across the area. Never had an experience this bad anywhere in the area. Tip your servers well even when they are busy and be grateful that you avoided the service at Pastaria. read more

We were so excited to eat at Gerard Craft's newest restaurant because we are the biggest fans of Niche. This restaurant definitely lived up to the Craft name! The space is very open and casual, with a large kitchen counter and open brick oven. The walls are filled with pictures of Italy, which I'm assuming are from Gerard's travels. The service was very friendly and quick and the food was fantastic. The fried risotto cheese balls were excellent and the black pepper pasta, described as adult mac 'n cheese, was ridiculously tasty! They have gelato and allow you walk up and sample the flavors. We decided on salted caramel and dark chocolate and both were really good. It was fun to see Gerard making pizzas in the kitchen and you can even sit at the kitchen counter to eat. We were very impressed with the quality of the service and food, especially since Pastaria was only it's second night of dinner service. It's wonderful to have a casual, fun Italian place to go to and I can't wait to go back. Congrats Gerard and crew for another success! read more

So... i've finally come here a total of 3 times in the last few years. Once was for a friend's birthday so long ago that i don't really remember. The other two times were all in the last month or so. Both times my SO and I got the Strozzapreti and garganelli. The strozzapreti is really good but not really as interesting as I want a fancy pasta dish to be... Honestly, my criticism of the strozzapreti stems form my love the the garganelli. I can't get over how great the gremolata contrasts with the beef and olives. It's SO GOOD. I feel like i'm eating so many things and there are so many flavors and every other bite feels like a different dish but it's all the same dish. I absolutely love this pasta. I should know. I've had it twice in the last month! And then there's their desserts. The gelatos are yummy and I found my second tummy (betsubara) thanks to the tiramisu. The tiramisu is a monster of a dessert (definitely should've been shared; but, alas, the SO detests coffee) and I ate it in one sitting AFTER eating all my garganelli. I'm going to avoid coming back to this place for a while -- only to save my poor waistline -- but i'll be back and i'll stuff my face again! read more

I've been here now three times, because my co-workers insisted I give it another try. I'm just not a fan... As many other people have mentioned Pastaria is super overrated! I've tried their pistachio pasta, and a few others. They all were uninteresting despite their delicious descriptions on the menu. Overall the pastas are OK, but not worth the hype. Their pizzas are very floppy and are also just OK. Even though I'm not a huge fan of the good pi I'd rather go there for pizza. The Service is awful. I was there on a Saturday afternoon where there was probably only two tables full and the hostess wouldn't seat me because I didn't have my entire party with me. I'm pretty sure they weren't going to get a full house before my group arrived, so their attitude was uncalled for. They've also committed one of my least favorite faux pas, which is bringing my appetizer with my entree. Gah!! If you're going to bring my appetizer with my entree I don't think I want it anymore... Overall this place is not worth the price tag and you can certainly find better Italian and service nearby...maybe not as nearby as down the street though. read more

From a financial perspective, I suppose a pasta restaurant is a relatively good risk. As people pay relatively high markup for pizza, which is basically flour, tomato sauce, cheese, and a few toppings, so I imagine they'll do the same for pasta, which usually is a different manifestation of the same basic ingredients. Artfully prepared, served on beautiful white plates, accompanied by a glass of wine, the combination is so satisfying. It took me a while to try Pastaria because parking is a big deal for me. I associate Clayton with circling the block searching for a space, and, just thinking about it, I'm unhappy. So I was delighted to discover you can park in the garage next to Pastaria, and have your ticket validated when you settle up. After that, everything else was easy. Christian was our fine server. I'm not sure how many tables he had, but the room was full, and he was there for us at the key moments. He knew the menu, and was completely comfortable explaining the gluten-free options, which seems remarkable for a pasta restaurant. Our meal: *Aged Negroni for TH *Mezzo Litro House Red Wine for me *Mixed Greens for TH (red wine vinaigrette, pears, walnuts, goat cheese) *Crispy Risotto Balls for me (mozzarella + Grana Padano, + herb aioli + marinara = more delicious calories than I deserved) *Garganelli for TH - Gluten-Free - (braised beef, olives, gremolata, Grana Padano) *Pappardelle for me (smoked pork, mascarpone, apples) *BASIL GELATO!! A friend and I visited on a Saturday afternoon around 2pm and we were seated within minutes of our arrival (Note: They will not seat you without your full party.) The atmosphere is open, you can see clear through the entire restaurant and you can see into the open kitchen where the chefs are preparing the food. This place has a very calming italian country theme. The tables are wood and the chairs don't match, they are mismatched wood chairs which reminds you of an old country home where they never throw out the old chairs... loved it! Now to the food. I ordered the Pappardelle and the Crispy Risotto Balls as an appetizer (see photos). The crispy risotto balls came with 2 dipping sauces, a tomato base and the other was similar to a tartar sauce type taste. I thought the tomato sauce paired better with the creaminess of the risotto and with this being my first time having risotto, it reminded me of creamy hashbrowns. lol. I thought it was very good though, you only get 6, so if you have more than 2 in your party, you will need extra orders. My Pappardelle dish WAS TO DIE FOR! OMG, by far one the best pasta dish I've had in 2013, and I've been alot of places this year. The smoked pulled pork was very tender and the thinly sliced apples in the dish added a nice hint of sweetness. I sprinkled some parm on the dish, of course, and I dove in. I enjoyed every bite. I forced myself to stop eating and take home 1/2, but it would have been very easy to stuff myself. If you are there, please try this dish! I hope they don't change the menu and remove this. A wonderful experience! They automatically addressed one of the things I hate about coming to Clayton: parking. There is free parking in the garage right next door to the restaurant. The service was impeccable, I came in right at 10am saturday for brunch. They have a small, but impressive menu. Grace, our server, took care of everything, was nearby for refills, and checked in on us quite a bit. I'm not one to really notice it, but the decor was also really nice, pictures everywhere, tons of natural light, a good amount of space between tables. I had the house made donut and the frittata - eggplant, spaghetti noodles (in the eggs) and veggies. Definitely interesting, really creative idea by the chef. Eggplant was soft, eggs were fluffy, the crust was delicate, and it came with a side salad. The bf ordered crispy potatoes (man, were they crispy!) and the breakfast cake and pork belly. Yum! The breakfast cake was not super sweet, but like the consistency of focaccia, not too doughy, not too airy, just right, and had fresh berries throughout. Went back for round two, tried the pistachio ravioli (pistachio, mint, lemon brown butter). I truly love a good brown butter it adds a richness without being heavy. The mint in this dish made it fresh and vibrant, nice compliment to the sauce. The lemon I would have rather had a zesting over top, but instead it tasted a little sour in the sauce. I did enjoy the pizza on my first visit and looking back what I do recall is the crust. It was chewy and delicate, but not over cooked and still added a little crisp bite. I like the idea of housemade pastas and I do really adore the rustic feel the interior brings. Side note: Flying to Kansas City today I see in Spirit Mag Pastaria's Roasted Radish Bruschetta. One of our favorite restaurants in STL! Let's start with the most important thing: HOMEMADE NOODLES. We all know pasta is all about the sauce. Nothing like smothering some cheap spaghetti noodles with ragu. Until you go to Pastaria, have their homemade noodles, and realize what a fool you've been all your life. Their noodles are incredible. Any pasta you get is great but i almost always get the Cacio e Pepe. (No I'm not a snob who speaks Italian, but they are: all the menu titles are in Italian so get ready to impress your date by pretending you know what stuff means). Cacio e Pepe is what they call the "adult Mac n cheese." Its a common dish in Italy that just means "cheese and pepper." Delicious, simple Italian food. They bring out fresh bread (Are you in the car on the way there yet? What's going on? Oh you're gluten free... nothing for you.) They also have good cocktails and local beers on draft. The place is superb! Had dinner twice this week , and the opening week shake out seems complete. The vibe will please families with kids if they get in early and are not in a huge hurry. The pizzas and pastas stand out and reflect local ingredients and made from scratch Care. I am afraid the home run combo of Kraft's talent, the very affordable prices, and a very hip space, will cause long waits. The reservation policy is likely for groups of 4 or more I was told. There is a private dining room above the bar for up to 50 or so I think. The bar us fun but cramped . The staff is great and do save room for gelato and tiramisu . Sources say lunch Will happen in a month or so. The Only part I would improve is the valet parking. The drop off zone was clogged and they will need a strong manager out there to keep it flowing. read more

Ah Pastaria, we meet again and this time better than ever. I was reached out to by a manager here apologizing for my past experiences and to me, that is enough to give this place another shot. It's the middle of the week and there is a wait, they're always packed. They absolutely are not short on business but the management cares enough about my experience to apologize and want to make things right... And really, that's incredible and the way things should be. I'm impressed, Pastaria. So I brought my best friend back with me. She actually has already been, and if you read my previous review, she was one of the friends that I suggested Pastaria to and had a bad experience. This time was completely different for us both. Our server, Justin, was incredible. He answered questions, kept our water glasses full, wine flowing, made suggestions... All around wonderful in every way. To start we had the Risotto Balls... You have to get them, there isn't an option. Just do it and you'll have no regrets. My friend had the Lasagna Bianca consisting of béchamel, roasted mushrooms, fontina, brown butter. I stole a bite and it was AMAZING! Incredibly rich, but oh so good. I had the Chitarra al Pomodoro consisting of tomatoes, garlic, basil, Grana Padano. I also added fresh mozzarella! It was so good. And a very big serving. To end our meal we, of course, ended with Gelato. You can't go wrong here. Of course if you read my previous reviews you'd know I am absolutely obsessed with the Caramel gelato. It's one of my favorite things I've ever ate, ever. I'm so glad I came back. Hopefully every time after this is like how this previous time was! From the host staff, to the servers, to the manager coming around to check on us... This place wasn't the memorable spot I had hoped it would be. It's a bit overpriced, crowded and the quality was not quite what I expected. I won't say it's bad, because it was a fun time, but it was quite loud and I just wan't into the whole experience. I had the gluten free pasta, which I know is not made in-house, but I tried the normal pasta with little to say. It's better than say, Pasta House, but it's not really any better than say, Massa's. Amazing... the wood fired pizza is delicious. The crust is thin and chewy, the sauce has just the right amount of acidity and simple tomato flavor. The Chitarra Aglio e Olio is a perfect simple pasta dish with a little heat. Pasta is homemade and cooked al dente. Get it with the anchovy for a kick of salty goodness. Don't skip dessert if you can. The pasta is so good that you just can't stop eating it. Get Mama Rodolico's Tiramisu. So many things to love about Pastaria from their homemade noodles to their on site gelato counter for an after dinner scoop. There is quite a bit of seating, but the tables are very close together and rarely will you come here during a meal time and not find the place packed. I would recommend making reservations if you are coming with a group or planning a date. You'll be offered fresh bread which goes great with the olive oil and parmesan available on the table. I recommend giving the chili spiced olive oil a try for an extra little kick. You are really doing yourself a disservice if you dont start your meal with the Crispy Risotto Balls as an appetizer--they are so delicious! The Chitarra al Pomodoro is a nice, classic pasta if you are looking for something simple but good. The pasta has always been served properly al dente when I have been. They have plenty of great salads to choose from which are pretty big servings and make for a nice meal or something to split with a friend. Their pizzas are also really good if you aren't feeling pasta. I struggle to eat more than half a pizza as they come in a pretty hearty portion size.
