I was so curious about Pastiche when I was in Providence for the day, and decided to stop by to pick up something for on the road back to MA. The majority of their selection are cakes--there were only a few other things they were selling in addition. One of those few things was the fruit tart which I was eager to try. It was delicious! Perfectly ripe fruit and the tart itself--both the filling and crust were extremely well done. The only reason it isn't 5 stars is that it was a pretty small slice--for $8.50. To be completely honest, I think paying half that amount for the size I received would be on target with what you'd receive in a comparable pastry/bakery shop. The servers were attentive and nice, and the shop is right next to the giant al fresco patio (which I mentally bookmarked that I will have to come back & try sometime). Really wanted to like this place after reading all the glowing reviews but the tiramisu was not it. The cream did not taste fresh, almost rancid. It was overpowering and a bit of a turn off. The rest of the cake was alright, a bit dry, overall just felt like it had been sitting out for a while and quality of ingredients was not great, the sugar taste sticks to your mouth afterwards similar to twinkies. Hands down and no question Pastiche is Rhode Island's best for their cakes. For cakes my favorites are definitely the old fashioned coconut and the tiramisu cakes. Of course, can't go wrong with classic vanilla. Beyond the cakes, the fruit tart is something. It makes an impressive statement when bringing it to a party or get together and will put everyone else's dessert to shame. The way they assemble it makes it seem like a piece of art. That said, a tad pricy for what it is and how it tastes (which is still pretty good). Service is generally good, as well. Have only rarely ever gotten mediocre or poor service here. During wintertime the ambiance and atmosphere is so warm, relaxed, and inviting that it's like the equivalent of a warm embrace. The fireplace really makes it comfy and homey especially when it's raining or snowing outside. I've found their coffee to be unpredictable and mediocre in quality, but fine if you are in a bind. The lattes are sometimes very bitter but every now and then you can get a decent one. The hot chocolate is absolutely amazing. Pastiche makes their own mix and uses the frother to take their hot chocolate to a level 10,000. One awesome thing about pastiche is that the ambiance on a Friday night or Saturday night is totally different compared to the ambiance when they first open for the day. If you want to beat the crowds and hang out in a low key environment, come in late morning. They usually have good music playing, and there's no pressure to leave when there's no line down the street. Pastiche was super busy when we arrived--there was actually a line to enter the store for take-out! My family tried the torta di cioccolata, which came with whipped cream and raspberry sauce, a peach cherry almond pastry, which came with crème anglais, passionfruit Italian soda, coffee, and sea salt caramels. The chocolate cake was super rich and chocolatey, and the raspberry sauce and whipped cream complemented it nicely. The fruit pastry was huge and had a lot of fruit, but I preferred the cake. The beverages were good, and the sea salt caramels were really creamy, soft, and had the perfect amount of salt. Everything was very good but perhaps not worth the price. As part of my moving away, I was blind-folded for a fruit tart taste-test, which included Pastiche, Whole Foods, and Market Basket (thanks to the contents of my original review, see above). But before I report the outcome, I think it was slightly rigged, maybe not intentionally, but I think they got Whole Foods on an off-day. Because it did NOT taste like the WF tart that I know. Words cannot describe how amazing Pastiche's fruit tarts are!! I live in Boston and I happily make the drive down every couple months to get this tart. Not only is it beautiful but the taste is out of this world. It's the perfect mix of tart and sweetness without being overly sweet. The fruits are always really fresh and crisp and the texture of the cream is a great mix of fluff and oozyness. The tart crust is sturdy enough to hold a slice together but then crumbles nicely when you take a bite. This tart is worth the price, the drive, the wait, everything! I got a slice of tiramisu ($8) and a lemon poppy scone ($3.25 I think). For the tiramisu, it wasn't a very large slice but it tasted pretty good. The texture was soft but they didn't use traditional ladyfingers, which I could tell. They use a sponge cake instead. The custard filling was very good though. The scone was tasty. I could taste the lemon flavor which was prominent with hints of the poppy seed. Nice size, little dry though. Tiramisu is tasty - perfectly balanced and nice texture. The mousse cake felt too dense. All that said, I just think this place is way too expensive. $8 for a slice when you can get a slice way cheaper elsewhere, and can get a whole cake for a similar price at Trader Joe's or Costco. Put it in perspective of being in the worst state in the country this place is pretty good. If it were in Boston it would be middle of the road just okay. Assuming you aren't going to drive to Boston then there isn't any competition in the West Virginia of NE so the only downside I can think of is parking which is nearly impossible to find. So plan on a little bit of a walk but once you get there you'll find a great selection. We tried 4 different pastries and they were all excellent. Very disappointed to discover that Pastiche has transformed into a take-out only establishment. There used to be a charming, inviting dine-in area, complete with table service for customers who wanted to enjoy their desserts and beverages in-house. Those features were part of what set Pastiche apart from other bakery cafes and gave it a true European cafe ambiance. Pastiche was a glistening diamond in the rough off the beaten path of Atwells. We were looking for a coffee later in the day and this was one of the only places open just a short walk from our abode. It's really tucked away from everything but offers a quiet escape from the hustle and bustle. They have a lot of coffee and an tea offers. Think upscale boutique Starbucks beverages to choose from. The coffee and chai was delicious. I was very please with my latte! They also have a ton of cakes and desserts. I absolutely loved my cannoli! It was so creamy and delicious. Also seemed to be very freshly made! The carrot cake was also incredible! I wish I could have tried more! This is a great spot to stop for early coffee or an after dinner dessert. Pastiche used to be a staple when my wife lived in Providence. We were back in town on this past weekend and decided to go after dinner. Was really looking forward to having some cookies and a cannoli. After going here, I was severely underwhelmed. The cookies were borderline terrible. They were dense, flat, too soft with a strange tart aftertaste. You know the cookie isn't great when I'm one and done. The cannoli was just alright. Wasn't bad but wasn't great either.
