For me, pastrami is heaven! This place cures and smokes their own. It is so flavorful with a nice smoky punch! I got the pastrami zombie. Of course! We added french fries. The sandwich was really good. I would only say that there wasn't enough pastrami for the price. Also, mine had way too much of their unique coleslaw. Took away from the flavor of the pastrami. Next time, I'll just ask for a little less. Still very tasty and not overly fatty. The french fries were crinkle cut and they were crunchy and well seasoned. I like their Russian dressing The parking lot is very small and it is difficult to find a spot. We drove around a few times. Success finally! The people that work there are really kind. Sorry to see all the hate on this place in other reviews -- it seems pretty good to me! It is NOT traditional New York deli-style pastrami. That's probably what puts off some of the other reviewers. It's smokier and thick-cut. Somewhere between smoked brisket and pastrami. It comes on a thick rye that also is delicious yet not a traditional deli rye. The sandwich also includes swiss cheese and coleslaw. The only decision you have to make is Russian dressing or mustard. If you carry it home, and especially if you chose the Russian dressing, the bread will be pretty sopping by the time you get home! Messy but still tastes good. (There are tables at the site, so if you want to avoid the dressing soaking into the bread so much you could eat there. There's a beer cart too!) The whole thing seems more like a homemade sandwich rather than one you bought -- and that's a good thing. And as I rode home I was thinking, some potato chips would probably go nicely with this -- and lo and behold, a little bag of Tim's chips was included! Nice touch. The price is rather high, but one sandwich can feed two if you're not superhungry. The trouble is if you don't have someone to share it with, it seems hard to store, since that bread will keep sopping up that dressing. So I decided to chow down the second half even though I was full. Wow! Big lunch. I recommend this place to anyone wanting a nice meat-cheese-slaw sandwich on rye, as long as you're not expecting a traditional New York pastrami. As others mentioned, this isn't traditional N.Y. style pastrami, I liked it. A 1/2 for $7 is borderline too expensive, especially as it's something for which there are lots of options in town. Wow, $10+ sandwiches are the new norm. Nevertheless, these folks are sandwich artists, their offerings are above anything at a chain and most carts. The pastrami, cole slaw, and Russian dressing complimented each other nicely. Unfortunately, the rye bread tasted packaged, it had a slight staleness to it. I love. Pastrami in rye. When I get rye bread I expect it to be dark with lots of caraway seeds or at least a lot of caraway flavor. This sandwich hand neither. The bread was more of a sourdough rye to me. I was really disappointed when one side of the bread was drenched in sauce making the sandwich hard to eat at my desk while working. The pastrami was good but not mind blowing like I would expect with the meat in the name. Overall a sold three I might go back but if not I at least gave it a shot. read more

This is a tough one. The pastrami was really really good, but there wasn't a ton of meat on the sandwich. It wasn't like there was only a tiny bit of meat, but I though there should have been a little more. I didn't need 4 inches of meat like in some of the delis in NY, but just a little more. The bread was also nothing special in my opinion. The Russian dressing was a nice addition and I got it on the side to dip my sandwich. $13 for the sandwich with a bag of chips included. I really wanted to try this place and I'm glad I did, but with so much food in Portland to sample, I don't know how soon I would come back to the Pastrami Zombie. A friend got the albacore sandwich and said it was really good. The girl working there was really nice. Covered picnic tables are available to eat your food. Street parking is available, but be careful to read and look out for all of the signs. read more

One of the many things I love about living in Portland is being within walking distance of great food: in one direction I have Patton Maryland and Spitz and in another I have Pastrami Zombie by Sammich. I was thrilled when Sammich relocated their Pastrami Zombie food truck to the pod at the corner of Mississippi and Skidmore this summer. The house roasted and smoked meats and no-nonsense sandwiches from owner Melissa McMillan are some of the best you'll find any where. We've been by the cart several times since it found its home in the Mississippi pod in July, both during the summer sunshine and the autumn rain, and thoroughly enjoyed it each time. Every time I go, I am always in awe of the perfection of their montreal-style pastrami in particular. It is perfectly seasoned, tender, juicy, and melts in your mouth. Layered with crunchy coleslaw and swiss cheese and smothered with a creamy housemade Russian dressing, the pastrami sandwich is what deli dreams are made of. Regular offerings at the cart include pastrami, albacore tuna, and grilled cheese sandwiches as well as a burger. The burger is another that is not to be missed, consistently named one of Portland's top burgers. A thick all natural beef patty is cooked to order (medium-rare please!) then topped with both American and Swiss cheeses, shredded iceberg lettuce, and a tangy house Sammich sauce. There are also daily specials offered at the cart that vary by the season and what's available. My hands-down favorite was a BLT offered this summer that featured thick slices of house cured bacon with slabs of local heirloom tomatoes. Juicy, smoky, crispy, and sweet flavors exploded in each and every bite, making for a sandwich to be savored and appreciated down to the very last scrumptious morsel. I look forward to having it again next summer. This time of year, you are likely to find a Reuben on the specials board. The grilled sandwich oozes with melted swiss cheese blanketing crunchy sauerkraut and the signature housemade pastrami. Pick one of these bad boys up and head over to Prost where you can enjoy a drink away from the rain with your sandwich. To top things off, Sammich has just opened its first brick-and-mortar in Portland. Offering some of the same fare as well as other Chicago Italian inspired sandwiches, I look forward to visiting there soon. In the meantime, I love our walks down to Mississippi, even in the rain. Probably the best burger I have had in the Pacific Northwest. My wife and I came here while in the area and amonst the many food carts in this pod, this one sang out to us. The customer service was remarkable and the tight menu offered limited, but provocative options. I had the daily special (a bizzare burger concoction from the name) while my wife had a regulary burger. Both were remarkable. Perfectly grilled with patties made of live. The sauces and homemade pastrami knocked it out of the park. We will be returning again and hope to see much more of this food. Not making us zombies, but fans. read more

This was the best fucken sammich I have ever had and I have had some sammiches. The balance of savory from that perfectly shaved meat, snap from the slaw and then the buttery flavor from the roll-this sammich was EVERYTHING you SHOULD expect. DEEEEELISH!!! Just had the Pastrami on rye with the house Russian and took it to the neck. The 1/2 would be plenty, HOWEVER, I chose to eat the regular sized sammich #fatlife. It comes with a little bag of Tim's Chips (yay) and a pickle spear too! As previously mentioned in another review, the meat definitely had a smokey more brisket-y flavor/texture. Not sure if the texture was due to the thicker cut....but honestly, it didn't make a difference either way. That shit was good. Parking is a little wonky, but what do you expect? Try and get into the small lot next door or you will just need to grab a spot on the street. The owner (I think) was the best. Unbelievable. This was the second time at this truck and it was amazing...I had the pastrami again and it's an amazing sandwich. You can taste the smoke on the pastrami but it's not overwhelming. I do not often eat pastrami, but when I do, I find it rather indulgent. I love how the sweetness and cool crisp of the Russian coleslaw refreshes the palette, while the savory salty fattiness of the pastrami settles in on the sour Rye. My only reason for the 4 star is the bread could have been toasted or crispy but alas, it was not. Don't plan on doing much after pounding one of these babies. After finishing our Saturday round shopping my wife suggested we call in a to-go order. The call was promptly answered having us place an order for two (2) half pastrami sandwiches each with house Russian dressing. We're advise the order would be ready in 10 minutes. The published menu price for the half-sandwhich is $5.00. It's dinner time, we're hungry, and more importantly it's our chance to support a local Milwaukie food cart. We pull up and patiently wait to pickup our meal. Several minutes pass when I decide to walk up to the truck to politely intrude on a gab fast underway. The chatty customer realizes there are others waiting for their order. The cart operator focuses on me when I announce my name and places a medium sized paper bag containing our food purchase on the counter. She then advises me that the total is $24.00. Nonplussed I hand over my card for payment I'm thinking what will go down if I challenge the order received vs the order placed. The thought of conflict weighs heavily on me so I pay the bill trusting the sandwiches will be much to our liking. The unexpected 50%+ plus cost increase has me concerned but, again I chose to pay and eat. Finally it's time to plate our sandwiches for a casual takeout dinner. As I unwrap each sandwich I notice that both sandwichs' are very light on the pastrami while being buried by an inordinate amount of sopping wet coleslaw. The pastrami is gray in appearance leading to believe it's old and hardly fresh. At this point I'm upset feeling the food is inedible and ridiculously overpriced. Frankly I haven't got anything nice add to this review. There nothing epic about Pastrami Zombies' sand which. This is my Go To truck in Portland reviewing now that I've been 5 or 6 times, overall they do sandwiches RIGHT! I've now tried the full menu along w/ a special here goes - The pastrami is out of this world, smokey, tender and tasty! My wife is a huge fan of the tuna, the avocado & arugula topping make it quite magical (she lets me have a bit on occasion). The burger is perfect for a change up from the pastrami, perfectly cooked on a soft bun, it's piled high with cheese, bacon (I add it) and lettuce with the house sauce. My quite picky girls are quite fond of the grilled cheese which is big enough for them to split. On a nice day, we'll dine out on the patio area and even grab a beer from Pollo Norte, on the not so nice days (one so far), I'll grab it to go and chow down at home. read more

I'm not even going to entertain the question over whether it was a proper Reuben. The meat wasn't pink so some deli pedant might raise a stink but blank that blank. Blankards. It was a damn good sandwich. Not something you'd wanna eat standing up. Even seated I took several minutes inspection before I would believe I wasn't wearing any of this sandwich. So awesome. I have been waiting for Pastrami Zombie to get up to Portland for MONTHS. The pastrami is not too thick or thin, so tender and the flavor is phenomenal. You get a big sandwich for the price, plus chips and a pickle and Melissa, the owner will greet anyone like a friend. I can't wait to go back and try something new. I will admit that I haven't tried anything else on the truck yet because I am a die hard Pastrami fan, but I have tried some of them at their flagship store, Sammich in Ashland, OR.
