He introduced me to pasties in his hometown in Southern California, and I fell in love. I have been a patron of the Pasty Shack ever since I moved to the East Sacramento neighborhood in 1996. Some others complain that the pasties are dry, tasteless, and just not good. Well, I disagree! My favorite, the original Cornish pasty, is packed full of flavor and is always a treat when I am hankering for something savory. Also, their specialty pasties, such as the Mexican pasty, or their delicious Chili dogs (I know, not a pasty) makes for a wonderful twist on the original recipe. I went to Sac State and have fond memories of getting these. I now live in the Bay Area but buy a few of these to bake myself at home every time I'm up in Sacto. Man, I love pasties, they are great! Finally got to try this place and couldn't help myself and got one of each. (Bavarian - top beef chunks, Cornish - top ground beef, Chicken, Vegetables, and Mexican (Thursdays ONLY). Fridays they have Chile Verdes...assuming it will be good also because their Mexican version is delicious! I had a bite from my boyfriends and he gobbled it all up before I could take another bite. I could pass of the vegetables, a true pasty should be flaky pastry and meat. Owner is super friendly, I couldn't help but love the locality of the store and the homemade dough that I could tell they use a good butter for the dough. I would come back and buy some to take home for the freezer next time. It is slightly pricey, but I think its pretty filling and "healthier" than any other fast food crap out there. I paid $32 for 5 pasties but their huge, i couldn't even hold one in my hand. It took two! BTW, park at the Rite Aid and walk over. I'm from Butte Montana. Once a week (or more), we could count on the humble pasty as being for dinner. So naturally, I have quite a taste for them. Unfortunatly, the only way I was able to get them in NorCal, was to make them in my kitchen. You can imagine how happy I was to discover that a business in Sacramento did nothing but make them. Admitedly, I hesitated in going, due to another buisiness in town serving them via the microwave (which makes the outside shell rubbery or paste-like). I was pleased to see that they used an oven. And while it's not made "Butte-style" (made in accordance with Michigan traditions, which is why they do not serve any gravy I imagine), it's close and cheap enough to satisfy my occasional home-food cravings. read more

this is a little "Hole in the wall" place on "J" Street near the University. I've been coming in here for years. Pasties are a cornish pie typiclaly filled with steak onion and potatoes. I grew up on these in the upper midwest, and these here aer authentic. Whenever I'm up in Sacramento I make a stop here and pick up a couple to take home for our dinner, and a couple to freeze for later. this is better than Fast Food. read more

Oh Pasty Shack...I love the Pasty Shack. I have had every pasty they sell, except for the veggie pasty. if you want to be vegitarian, eat a salad! Pasties are all about the meat and the crust, and the Pasty shack does them right. They are right next to Club 2 Me and, keep pretty much the same hours on the weekends. On the weekends also, they have specialty pasties, like the Chile Verde (by far the best one, beating out the Bavarian) and the Mexican. Both are great twists to a traditional food. read more

Came here after a very drunken night at 2me. Our friend really wanted to get a pasty. I had no idea what it was but we all had fun speaking in a british accent all the way home. Once we got back to our friends home we all devoured the pasty... a friend did mention the meat looked green, which we didn't mind since we were all highly intoxicated. Tried my first pasty here last week with a ex coworker. I wish I had found out about this place before I quit my job. The pasty I got was so delicious. Looked like a huge empanada. We decided to split it and let me tell you, I wish we bought our own. We were still hungry, it was really good with some hot sauce also. I've been here twice and the first time I wasn't impressed as my pasty fell to pieces, but the second time it was quite authentic. Being of Cornish blood, and having a grandmother who makes quite possibly the most authentic Cornish pasties, I'm hard to please. There is only one such kind of authentic pasty, and that is your authentic Cornish steak pasty. Anything with any other flavors in such chili, is not a real pasty and I refuse to buy one. Of course, I'm not reviewing those pasties, just the good old Cornish steak kind. These are a little on the expensive side, and my advice is not to plan to sit down here as there are only a few tables, but they've got them readily prepared and they take just a few minutes to heat up so you can come in and get one to go. read more

Food was average, maybe a little below due to the fact that the pasties were dry, and admittedly sitting in a hot box waiting for customers to arrive. I drop it down to two stars due to a pet peeve of mine: no fountain drinks. Dollar for a can of soda or a bottle of water. That isn't totally unreasonable, but I tend to be quite thirsty and feeling like I need to ration out my drink ruins a meal for me. read more

Tried again last night, ordered a chicken pasty it had one piece of chicken the size of a dice , had another meat I think beef not a lot but more than the chicken , filling was a little bland but the flavor wasn't bad , and the pastry was good, now the aftermath stomach was and still is upset and this morning I've got the the runs , so much for giving them another chance I won't do that again. The food was excellent! Since moving to NorCal 10 years ago, I've been on the hunt for a place that serves pasty, and one that doesn't need to be covered in gravy. I have finally found it! This is a cute, small shop and the day I went, the gentleman who served us was very kind. Me and my friend both got the regular beef pasty and it was a perfect meal. The crust was flaky and the insides were tender and moist. Not once did I wish I had HP sauce or gravy to pour over it. And unlike other pasty's I've had, the crust held together. The inside had huge chunks of beef and potatoes. The filling is definitely home made. They had a dessert pasty that day - apple turnover. It was fairly good. The filling tasted alright and the crust definitely was homemade, but there was a faint canned filling taste. I'm thinking the inside of the turnover was canned apple pie filling. But still, it was pretty good. All in all, good service, excellent food and I'm definitely coming back. Finally, my long search for a pasty place is over! read more

The food's pretty good most of the time (consistent quality). The atmosphere isn't the best and this "hole in the wall" eatery is cramped. The ingredients aren't anything special, but on the upside you don't need to spend a fortune to eat here either. There's a certain nostalgic feeling that you get when you have a pasty and it somehow keeps me coming back. Oh my...oh my. Has this place gone the way of many restaurants who feel that their clientele will return despite the sinking quality of the food? Today, was a long-awaited return after living away from Sacramento for some time. It was a true disappointment. My son and I stopped by and bought two pasties each -- to go, you know, one for lunch and one for another time. After having warned him that they might be over $5 now, I was shocked to see that some varieties were over $6. Ok, thought I, remembering the lovely pastry of a couple of years ago. When the server put my two lukewarm pasties in a bag (there was a time when you could barely fit two steaming pasties into a bag, let alone fold down the end several times!), I looked at her, and she pronounced my total to be over $12. Yikes! And they always used to put a fork and napkin in the bag. Gone are those days. The chicken pasty consumed at lunchtime was shocking! A few pieces of stringy chicken, a couple of veggies including three lima beans (who wants lima beans in a pasty?), and nothing you could call 'sauce' inside the slightly salty, drier than sand creation. The pastry wasn't even a redeeming feature, as it had been in the past. Curious about the Cornish pasty that I had purchased for dinner, I lifted the bag, took off the foil wrapping, and opened the top of the pastry, expecting to see a juicy, appetizing bit of beef and potatoes. I was, instead, greeted with a 'piece' of meat that turned out to be 5-6 cubes stuck together, old dried up cubes of potato... need I say more? I am having trouble going on, especially after having read some of the glowing reviews, as well as the ones that referred to the delicious pasties bought after a long night of drinking. Two things come to mind -- maybe they do taste good after you're plastered, and the other is that one reviewer must have started drinking really early -- they close at 7 on the dot. Grateful that the pasties are no longer the size they used to be -- it would have been twice as disappointing. We're giving this East Sac spot a miss for a very long time to come. The Bavarian is awesome, but my favorite has to be the corned beef and cabbage pasty for Saint Patrick's Day. we even had their breakfast pasty that are available by special order for our company meeting. I picked up a couple of Pasties for supper tonight. I like to bake them fresh in my oven and serve piping hot. Just a personal preference to bake them up myself even though those pasties served already baked are also delicious. OMG, the crust was flakey, the contents of the pasties were abundant and yummy, and my spouse couldn't stop raving about dinner tonight! The Pasty Shack is nothing less than an absolute gem. I remember when my dad first brought me a pasty and an ice cold root beer for lunch back in high school. The crust was crispy and flakey but the insides are warm and tender. I've been hooked on both the Cornish Pasty and the Chicken Pasty ever since then. Whenever I'm in the area I try to swing by this place and support it. It's the definition of "hole in the wall place." Small and humble, I'm pretty sure it's been run by the same guy for all these years and he's very kind. I believe there are 10 or so different pasties that you can choose from, some of which are a "pasty of the day" or "pasty of the week" type deal. Honestly you can't go wrong with any of them. Pasties are supreme comfort food that keeps you satisfied and will make your stomach do a happy dance. If you're in the area you have to swing by for a fresh pasty or take some frozen ones home to bake in your own oven. Service is quick and easy and you won't be disappointed by the flavor. read more

Not impressed. We got a Chicken one, Bavarian, and a Cornish. The Chicken one was boring and lacked in flavor. The Cornish one had a big chunk of beef in it that they meant to cut up but they didn't pay attention. And finally the Bavarian which was decent! So, they sell a small side of gravy that is a must on these pastys. Besides the Bavarian one, the others are dry. I'm not going to go outa my way to come back here, but if I was in the area I would try the Chile Verde one. But that would only be if you show up on the day that they sell the Chile verde. So, if you wanna pay over $7 for a dry boring pasty, make sure you get a side of gravy. read more

This was a waste of $6.50. Walked in on a Saturday afternoon and no one was in here, just a 17 year old kid behind the counter who obviously did not want to be there. We ordered the Cornish Beef Pasty. It smelled wonderful, it looked wonderful. I took my first bite and it just went down hill from there. The meat was soft, but so dry. I grew up eating pasties from the upper peninsula of Michigan and was happy to stumble upon a place here in Sac that sold them. I was greeted warmly by a gentleman behind the counter. I didn't realize it but I was there minutes before closing. No annoyed look on the mans face though so that was nice. I ended up leaving with two of the cornish I believe. I wanted to try a Bavarian but they were out of baked but did offer me an uncooked version to cook at home. I passed. No complaining from me though I was seriously in there at closing. Comparing these to the ones I grew up eating they did seem a little small but I thought they were cooked and seasoned like the "should" be. They're pasties...they're not meant to have sour creams, yogurts, gravies or cheeses. They were very filling and had a generous amount of meat and potatoes. Also, the actual pasty shell was perfection. Not bland at all. Overall I'd come here again, especially on a cold winter day when I don't feel like cooking! read more
