I went to this transmission shop last Friday, after the dealership told me that my 2014 Camry needed a new transmission (they wanted $5-8k). I wanted a second opinion and the only 2 other transmission shops that were known to do good and honest work in the rockland/ramsey area had closed forever. I asked my network of friends and one of them recommended Rich (the owner) as a honest and qualified transmission repair shop. Rich diagnosed and fixed the problem in less than a half hour and i drove home with no issues. He even refused to take any payment, as he said it was an easy fix ! I only wish I could give 10 stars. I had an issue with my truck making a weird grinding noise. Thought for sure it was the transmission. Rich took it in and called me a day later to tell me it was fixed. It wasn't the transmission but he could have easily said it was and charged me thousands. He is a stand up guy and does great honest work. I'm thinking of having his love child. LOL Really though there are a lot of scams out there, Pat Barrett's is not one of them. read more

Rich diagnosed my 2008 GMC Acadia which he said all it needs is a torque converter. He said the transmission didn't need to be rebuilt. He also repaired other issues on the car which needed to be repaired. The car runs like brand new. A real honest shop which are hard to come by today. I would recommend this shop to anyone. I heard a pop in my 2011 Honda Accord and the car came to a complete stop immediately. I called for a tow and the driver said that she has been getting a lot of these calls. She suspected that it was the transaxle. I was referred to Pat Barrett Transmissions by Ideal Automotive on Kinderkamack in River Edge. I gave them a call and told him what the tow truck driver thought it might be. I spoke with Rich and he asked if the car turned on, made a grinding noise and whether the speedometer was working to which I answered yes to all three questions. He reassured me immediately that it was likely a broken rod and that it would be a simple fix. He told me upfront that they were busy this week but could get the car done within a week and he did just that. I rarely find a business nowadays that took the time to put their customer's mind at ease, complete the work within the estimated time AND was reasonably priced to boot. I did not leave feeling like I was being swindled which is important to me. There's a good reason why this place has been around for over thirty years. I'm hoping they have many more years to come of doing good business and doing right by their customers. Like a few other reviews, my car is running better than it did before. Rich diagnosed my transmission problem using a computer. Turned out my 2009 Honda CRV (165,000 miles) just needed a third gear pressure switch. The repair was $225 including fluid change. My CRV is running nicely. They are pretty busy and it took four days to get an appointment. Very nice people. read more

I brought my car in having noticed an issue with the transmission. Rich was great. It required a part that he felt the dealer wanted too much for and instead found a compatible part that was much less and was able to fix the issue at half the price. I'm giving Pat Garret Transmissions only a 4 star rating because I didn't leave my car with them yet. I was a walk-in, well i called prior, but i didn't make an appointment. I met the owner Rich and another worker, Bob and they were extremely honest and friendly off the bat! With the days of crappy customer service, these guys took the time to look at my car and suggest a few options. These guys are great! After having numerous lights come on my dashboard, I took my car to the Subaru dealership where they told me I would need a new transmission ( cost 7400). I decided to get a second opinion and I'm so glad I did. I brought my car to Pat Barrett Transmission and they diagnosed the problem and fixed it in a half day. my mechanic does not do transmissions. he did minor job and told me to have transmission checked because he saw transmission fluid before it becomes big problem. went to one shop. did not put into lift but told me the job will cost $1500 and to come back in 2 weeks. went to PB. Rich looked under but said come back when lift available. came back the following day at 8 am. Tony put it up on lift. Rich came over and waved me over to look with Tony. Rich said because car runs well, probably just loose bolt and to tighten. when tony drove it out, he was giving me back car key. i said i have to pay Rich but Tony said no charge. i went back to Rich who was on phone to say thank you. of course i will send check for the labor. they are the best. honest and qualified. read more

I was getting gas in the Delta gas station on Old Hook Road in Westwood after picking up my 4 year old daughter from school. After filling up my tank, my reverse gear stopped working. I had to made a quick decision raising 2 small kids and 2 jobs that I work, I needed my car to work. Should I invest in a new car or get this one repaired? I remembered that Pat Barrett Transmisions was a couple of blocks away and had previous work done by them in which I was very well pleased. Originally, I just needed a new computer and that solved my problem years ago. My Toyota Rav4 racked up many miles since then and finally my reverse gear went. My transmission was rebuilt for me this time around and although we had a few Nor Easter storms, my car was ready within a few days and I picked up my vehicle during the nor easter storm. I was so happy to receive the call that my car was ready during the snow storm. I only had to borrow a car for 1 day from my mom and had mine back quickly to keep my busy schedule with my 2 jobs and my kids schedules with schools. I still remember receiving the call during the snow storm telling me, your car is ready and thought you might need your awd. My car drives like new and I am quite happy. Thank you so much. My 2004 Ford Explorer started slipping. I took it to Pat Barret Transmission and they tried a sensor first as that error came up. The new sensor turned off the service engine light. However, the car still slipped. They rebuilt the transmission and did it the right way. This include new pistons and seals and sleeving the bores. They have a one year, unlimited milage warranty on their work and are trustworthy. read more
