Found this place during the French market and it was delightful! Mille-feuille is my favorite pastry so I was excited to see they have a caramel flavored version. It ended up being not my favorite thing I had there but it had a great ratio of cream filling to puff pastry!! This was our go to breakfast spot. I am a quiche officianado, and they did not disappoint. I had the bacon and the leek the next day. Both are delicious. The crust is flaky and buttery, and the filling is perfectly filled with flavorful ingredients. The wife loved the croissant with chocolate and loved the cappuccinos. This is the third time in a row that my pastry has been stale. I took a chance and ordered my birthday cake here--the passion fruit milk chocolate mousse. The outer sponge was inedible. Dry and over the hill. The chocolate decorations on top are stale, the fruit is well past its edible period, and the entire exterior tastes of refrigerator. The apricot gelee on top has melted and slid off. And then inside the chocolate mousse layer is less than a centimeter thick. So it's just stale pastry, a tiny bit of tasty mousse, and a melty top layer. The last two times I let them know directly that the pastry was stale, and in one case I didn't even get everything I had ordered. No one got back to me. The ham and cheese croissants have also become unreliable. Sometimes they're lovely, but sometimes they're just a flattened pile of grease. I am so sad as I have always loved their pastries. But they either need a new pastry case or to 86 what they don't sell within a day or two. I can no longer spend my money here or recommend it to others. It's a big disappoint me as a very longstanding customer who always looked forward to coming here as a special treat. read more

Patisserie Poupon remains a wonderful place: beautiful and delectable French pastries, very nice coffees (especially the ones with a little sweetness!), a pleasant and peaceful environment where you can as easily catch up with a friend as you can read a book, write in a journal, etc, all the while enjoying a delicious pastry (or a nice chicken salad or sandwich--they have some lovely brunch or lunch pre-made options too!) with a freshly made coffee. I love visiting Patisserie Poupon whenever I'm in Georgetown. My family and I discovered it when we attended Georgetown French festival. Today's service felt a little off. A gentleman walked in just before me, and though there were three ladies at the counter, none of us were greeted. That's unusual because every other visit, I've been greeted with a warm welcome. The lady who took my order seemed short and unfriendly, which was disappointing. I ordered my favorite, the almond croissant, slightly flaky and sweet with a fresh-squeezed orange juice. She told me to have a seat and said, she'll bring it to me, but moments later, she just called out, "Your orange juice is ready," from behind the counter. The croissant was good. 5 stars for the food but the service brought the experience down to a 3 today. Hopefully next time the friendliness I've experienced from Patisserie Poupon return, because that's part of what makes it such a special spot in Georgetown. read more

This is a solid little cafe in Georgetown. I've tried them a few times, and I'd say the item I've liked best is the quiche! It has such a lovely, custardy texture and doesn't skimp on the cheese. The almond and chocolate croissants aren't my favorite in DC, but they're not bad either, and the only things I've disliked so far has been their King Cake (a little bland - not as rich and buttery as I expected) and their pain aux raisins (a little too dry for me). I don't think it's the best French bakery in DC, but it's solid enough - especially for savory items - and I wouldn't hesitate to stop in for a quiche when I'm in the neighborhood. I enjoyed a wonderful almond croissant and a medium cafe Americano. Today was the first time that I had been here, and I would characterize it as Georgetown quaint. I wouldn't call it hoytie toytie, but it's certainly close. They offer a decent selection of danishes, croissants, and turnovers. Additionally they also have various lunch sandwiches and baguettes that look delicious. The service was personable and fast, although when I came this afternoon there weren't any other customers who were waiting to order. The croissant was good, and I am sure that it was prepared this morning at the same location. Great French pastries. My friend and I tried the following: - Cassis mousse - pretty good mousse but not my type of dessert - Pear tart - great texture and flavors. The bottom was perfectly flaky, crispy, and soft, and the pear (Bosc, I think) on top was soft yet also firm and refreshing. - Chausson aux pommes (French apple turnover) - pretty good but bit too sweet for me. The apple was pureed, and I think I would've preferred the texture of actual apple slices/bits. Everything tasted soft and rather mushy, so some apple slice/dice texture would make biting into the pastry a bit more exciting. - Almond croissant - delicious! Airy and light. Flakiness was almost as good as from France itself. It also wasn't too sweet. read more

I ordered a turkey on half baguette which I believe is $12 or less and a drip coffee. Lady at the register distracted, charges me $67.76 including 20% tip. I questioned the bill amount and asked to see a printed receipt as I need readers to see the screen. She acted insulted. There were no tables only standing room at the coffee bar. The cashier passed me and I asked a second time for the receipt, which then a different woman brought to me with the explanation that they reversed the extra charge, but no receipt for this. My online card shows $24.75 credit so my total for the dry not fresh bread tiny sandwich and black coffee was $43.01. The bakery is cute and popular. The shop is located in nice spot in Georgetown. Lounge chairs, tables and dining chairs are set up outside in the front of the building so you can absorb some sun rays or people watch. Tables and chairs are provided in the cafe and there is a quiet little garden space in the back of the cafe. I ordered a cortado which was on the menu. The barista didn't seem to know the difference between a cortado and a macchiato. She added a dash of steamed milk to my cup, handed it to me then asked if I wanted more milk. I was in a hurry so I just took the drink. Thankfully, the shop uses Illy coffee beans so it wasn't a terrible espresso drink. It just wasn't what I ordered or what I was in the mood for. I didn't have a terrible experience, but in the future I would likely walk a few more blocks to Compass or Georgetown Coffee for coffee. read more

After passing by this place so many times, I thought it'd be worth a try. I initially tried to go on a Monday, but unfortunately didn't realize the store wasn't open on Mondays. Our second try was therefore on a Thursday at around 2 pm. The selection of cakes was a bit disappointing/limited, as I know they have much more options earlier in the day. Regardless, I ended up going for the chocolate cake (mousse) with strawberries. We also had someone try the mango mousse, as well as a fruit tart. Each of them was SUPER delicious. The texture was super soft, and just the perfect amount of sweetness. Honestly, I don't think you can go wrong with any of the pastries/cakes here. I also noticed that they were selling sandwiches. Some people even had full on meals, though I wasn't sure where they were getting them, as they weren't listed on the chalkboard hanging menu in the front. Pros: Some of the products(quiches) are terrific and the Georgetown staff is nice Cons: their baguettes are Terrible. Trader Joe's frozen or Fresh baguette's are Both better. And rude and unhelpful customer service by home office is offensive. When I tried to make a special order of their mini eclairs, they replied "we only take orders on website and you have to order other mini pastries too. Just because you called I'm not going to make this happen for you." Crazy! And certainly not customer friendly . read more

This place is wonderful! I stayed at an air bnb walking distance from this place and I came here every morning during my stay.

I came in around 2:30 for a ham and cheese croissant and an iced latte. The girl working the counter was lovely to make conversation with and was very kind. The croissant was 10/10. If you like an Asiago bagel that's what the cheese on the top tastes like. The latte was also delectable with the perfect milk to espresso ratio (I like my lattes on the stronger side where the espresso flavor is very noticeable). The inside is clean and there is outdoor seating in the back which is more private, and out front. I liked how quiet and calm it was in there. read more

While visiting outside Washington, D.C. in October 2015, I thought to introduce my stepson "G.V." to the kouign-amann, hoping he'd appreciate my vice, and, if he didn't, that he'd give me his portion before taking too many bites. Searching the City and its suburbs for the bread/cake (call it, "KWEEN-ahmahn," but please, don't call it "pastry"), I established that Patisserie Poupon was the only place around that baked the Breton delight. It seemed we were headed to Georgetown, but not before I verified that Poupon had the stuff. Of course I called ahead. It was a lovely Saturday mid-morning, and, "...I'll just shoot over to the bakery, quick-like, and pick up something for my coffee..." had left me languishing in line outside more than one trendy shop, bookended by preposterous hipsters whose sneers revealed certainty that their self-abnegation made them better people - or, at least, better than the rest of us. I never can convince them that I know better; that the payoff for waiting is mostly just bread, and sometimes, heartbreak. On the phone, the counterman was helpful. He asked me to wait while he counted his remaining kouignoù-amann, and then, returning, he said that he had three, and did I want him to hold them for me. Did I? Did I just go back in time and to another country, where trusting helpful service is typical and the needs of the customer matter? I nodded at the phone, and said, "Yes, please." Feeling obliged to repay the counterman's kindness by picking up our order quickly, we saddled up, crossed the river from Virginia and thence to Poupon. It was as though God wanted us there. We encountered no traffic while driving into town. We parked directly across the street from the place. Entering, we found no line, just two ladies who were picking up an order, who had their money out and ready. And, once at the counter, we learned that our order had been relayed to the woman working the register, who turned, grabbed our kouignoù-amann and some items we selected on the fly, then rang us up. Elapsed time (from home): 22 minutes; Elapsed time (at the counter): 2 minutes; Stress level: 2 (only because I was anxious to bite into my breakfast). Then G.V. and I sat, listened to live chamber music and each enjoyed a kouign-amann with a nice Illy-based cortado. At approximately three inches across, Poupon's kouign-amann was smaller than I'd expected, but it was perfectly satisfying: tender, flaky, buttery dough, imbued with light caramel and sugar-spangled on top. To my dismay, G.V. liked his, and so I was forced by good manners to share. Eventually, we left, and though I won't soon return to D.C., and notwithstanding that in the seven months since my visit, 12 area establishments have joined Yelp's list of shops offering the kouign-amann, one day I'll revisit Patisserie Poupon.
