I have been going to Valerie Joseph every week since the end of Covid for hair cut, color, blow…read moredry, manicure, pedicure and occasional wax. I love the work that Henry does with my hair, and I love Julies manicure. I also occasionally gift my friends daughters with hair cut, color, and nails. I think the regular receptionist Teresa is outstanding with respect to organization and friendly and laid back atmosphere in the salon. Normally, I would give the salon five stars. The reason why I am giving the salon one star is first, the inability of the salon to handle a simple situation when my manicurist didn't come in for my gel manicure and pedicure appointment (Teresa would have simply apologized and rescheduled me) and second, how the substitute receptionist Althea basically blamed me for exacerbating this snafu. Althea said as a favor to me, someone, not a manicurist, would be able to remove my gel manicure (I had given up on the pedicure because even though I said I was willing to reschedule, come back, or wait, apparently these things weren't possible) The woman who removed the manicure was very nice, but I had unfortunately forgotten that the nails look white and scratched when gel is removed. The problem arose bc I asked if there was something opaque to cover. After she applied opaque polish, Althea was visibly upset and verbally chastised me for asking for a manicure without checking with her first. I was so taken aback, because honestly, it unfortunately didn't occur to me that a coat of opaque polish was that big a deal. I also felt terrible that the woman who helped me also seemed to be getting into some trouble for taking the time to help me out. I apologized sincerely to Althea several times, which in my mind, should have been the end of it. And, I was getting a bit aggravated bc no one had apologized to me that the services I had booked weren't available. But she reluctant to take my repeated apologies, and she also didn't seem to want to take my request for my usual following weeks appointments. I left feeling like I had ruined her schedule and her day, and that my business wasn't wanted. This makes me very sad, bc I love the salon. My mother in law has terminal cancer, and sometimes spending time at Valery Joseph is the highlight of my week. I would highly recommend this salon so long as the schedule is running smoothly and the regular receptionist Teresa is at the helm. The professionals are among the most talented in NY and very nice. I'm honestly not sure what I will do now for salon services, but I'm debating cancelling my appts if Teresa isn't there. The issue is i purchased a series of services.

I had some brown/blonde balayage that I had grown out for 2 years since I first got the color done…read morethat I wanted to cut off. The problem was that the color was still pretty high up such that I would have to cut off too much hair to get all the remaining color gone, so I needed to dye my hair back to black since my goal was to go back to my natural hair color and go short for the summer. Yvette (colorist) and Jairol (hair stylist) handled my appointment and were awesome! First off I was LATE by half an hour which I was so embarrassed by but they still took my appointment. Yvette's scalp massage during the hair washing was very relaxing! I showed Jairol example photos of the cut I was going for and he gave me advice on what he thought suited me, so my cut ended up being like a mix of the reference photos that I showed him. Before he was going to move on to blow drying my hair, I voiced my wish to go a little shorter, to which he obliged. I like that it seemed like both Yvette and Jairol took their time to do a really good job. Despite me being late, there was no sign of them rushing me out the door. Overall I felt very taken care of while I was here. Yes this is a bit of a higher end salon (I spent $370 here for cut + color + tip) but it's worth it. I personally only get a haircut like once a year so for me, it's worth the investment. I would definitely like to come back!

Instead, the colorist completely ignored my request, used her own dyes without asking, and now my hair is pulling a fire engine red -- the exact opposite of what I asked for. When I brought up how my roots weren't done correctly, she claimed my dye was expired (it wasn't), even though I've used the same box over 10 times with no issue and know how it behaves, especially at the roots. (She did not leave it on long enough) She also made an odd comment: "I'd love to make you a brunette," despite me clearly asking for red/copper -- and the fact that I'm a natural brunette. Throughout the appointment, I felt constantly dismissed and second-guessed. I even told her a previous stylist had butchered my hair, and instead of showing empathy, she defended him, saying maybe it wasn't malicious -- when I know it absolutely was. At the time, I questioned if I was asking for too much, but in hindsight, it's clear the experience felt so off because she argued with nearly everything I said. Overall, I felt gaslit, ignored, and very disappointed.

I booked an appointment online, and was required to enter a credit card number to make a deposit, and agree to the cancellation policy of being on the hook for the full cost of the service if I was a no-show. This was a first for me after nearly two decades in New York. But I showed up, as scheduled, on my appointed Saturday at around noon. Oddly, I was the only person in the salon other than the stylist, who did not seem aware of my appointment. The salon was not as light and airy as the website pictures would make it seem; it was a little worn, but nothing terrible. People had mentioned being provided with adult beverages in reviews, but I only saw a few dusty, opened bottles in a corner, and was not offered anything. But again, I had gone there to get a keratin hair treatment. The stylist did her thing in applying the treatment. I was a little suspicious that she was applying it with a spray bottle, as every other application that I've had or seem has been with a brush. I asked the question and the stylist seemed a little bit defensive. (I'm not a hair expert, but lots of people have first time jitters when working with a stylist for the first time). But the finished product was fine and I left a tip. I had a bit of a surprise when I returned home to find an email indicating that I had been a no-show for the appointment, reminding me of the cancellation policy, and offering me a chance to reschedule. I actually checked online to ensure that I had not mistakenly visited the wrong salon, as I was literally the only person there for 2 hours, before responding to advise of the error. I later reconciled with my regular hair dresser and never went back.

Went for a hair cut for myself and it wasn't great but okay. The latina hairstylist to right was polite but appeared inexperienced. Whats more important is that my daughter was with me and wanted to get her hair wash and blow dried. That first time for wash and blow dry the hairstylist yo the left by window, also latina but lighter complexioned, washed and blow dried my daughters long hair. I was given a price of 40 and tipped the stylist 5 dollars. When we went again the following week the 2nd time the stylist rudely complained to the woman by register in my presence about having to do my daughters hair and not being paid sufficiently... I thought it was so unprofessional and rude but i understood that my daughter has waist long curly (loose non coarse) hair and know that's its a lot of work. So i figured if i tipped her more than 5 dollars she would be happy but i was wrong. The woman by register apologized to her and said it was her fault that she failed to give me wrong price the first time i went with daughter. I was initially charged 40 then on this occasion, 45. I didn't want to challenge it so i paid the 45. It should be noted that washing and blow drying daughters hair was under 1 hour.... I ended up tipping stylist 10dollars thinking she was going to be happy next time we came but i was wrong. The 3 and last time i went the same hair stylist gave us a dirty look and again complained to woman by register how its hard to do the hair and complained about the length. I was shocked because i didn't see her complain about anyone else in having to do their hair... And besides i tipped her 10 dollars the week before. I also saw woman with coarse thick hair come in to get a wash and set or blow dry and although they had short hair stylist and i didnt see her complain... Their demeanor was unprofessional and unacceptable. I had also observed another patron come in to get a ambre done on her hair only to walk out when done and return in less than 15 minutes to complain how it wasn't don't correctly in the back of her hair... It was a horrible experience and i would not recommend the salon to anyone. I am happy to say that my daughters long beautiful hair now gets dine at a local salon in the same neighborhood where we are welcomed, get great service and where the prices are not changed up in us and where the owner and stylist are professional. And guess what? We only pay 40 dollars-

I'm upset I even have to write this but I think others could learn from my mistakes. I've spent the…read morelast 2 months debating posting it but I have spent THOUSANDS of dollars to try to not only fix but repair my hair from the damage from the negligence of Jan Marie. I asked for the left picture, simple brunette with a few thin highlights & got the right. My hair was dark brown (also pictured) and the inspo picture should have been achievable without bleaching my entire head (?) I left with a full head of bleached, damaged and yellow(?) hair. I barely had any unbleached hair. Completely ruined & fried after I've grown it out for YEARS to be healthy. I asked Jan Marie to fix it the next day, and when I went she asked me "so what, we aren't ready to look like the picture?" I was honestly baffled by that comment, that she truly thought she gave me what we agreed on in the picture. I needed to get through the appointment to get my hair back to brunette for my engagement in a week. Throughout the appointment it was clear she believes she did what I wanted. When I said to her that I wanted to be brunette, and that I am now blonde, her response was "your PERCEPTION is that you're blonde, but you're not blonde." "Your perception" Gaslighting me. Also the "fix" didn't fix anything, she just sloppily laid a color ontop of my hair and said "happy now?" She never once acknowledged that this is her wrongdoing and blamed it all on me that it was my fault. I felt so uncomfortable the whole time and was cordial just so I can get my hair back to a normal brunette color. I contacted the manager (Mylene) and she said that the stylist (Jan Marie) told Mylene that Jan Marie DID gave me the inspiration picture that we agreed on during my first appointment & that she should have charged me for 2 services. lol. However I showed the manager the pictures of what we agreed on vs what I got & she was apologetic and agreed this is very different from what I asked for & the pictures look nothing like what we agreed on. She gave me a full refund ($365) Less than 2 months later I have paid a different salon $200 to cut off the dead hair Jan Marie left me, over $700 to "color correct" in multiple sessions to get BACK TO MY NATURAL HAIR COLOR, over $700 already on different at home and salon treatments to try to fix this. I am left with completely damaged hair which shouldn't have been done if the job was done correctly & without negligence from Jan Marie. I will be continuing to spend thousands of dollars to get my hair to be healthy in time for my wedding.

The color is better than I pictured and the process was SO SHORT. I felt very taken care of and he was so kind and welcoming. Diana washed and conditioned my hair and was so careful and thorough! I really appreciated that she took her time and took care of my hair/scalp so wonderfully! Tesfa killed it with the curling of my hair. I was complimented ALL DAY- her hair styling absolutely floored me. Seriously, she will style you RIGHT. Thank you so much to this team and for such a wonderful experience. 11/10. Easily.

First of all, I know everybody affiliated with this Salon is excellent so I'm going to just tell you about the two typist I had today and again they are all absolutely amazing and so talented. Nicole did my coloring and she knew exactly what I needed done before I even explained in my consultation with her and she did exactly as she promised and I think she thinks even better ha ha! I came in with oxidized gold RG hair and walked out with the most delightful, neutral, beige, exactly what I wanted and it's still at the shiny gold highlights without having it highlighted, in the sun, and even in the dressing room, I noticed it under the lights so it still had that sprinkle of golden blonde as if I was at the beach, but it was beige and just nice and subdued, which is exactly what I wanted. I upgraded to the color choice that contained a whole lot of oils so that your hair will not dry. I'm so happy I did it and it's so worth it and the toner also was at the same company. I'm not sure if it's appropriate for me to post it but you could always call The salon and ask for the name of it if it's something you're interested in having done. Thomas and Ross are still there. I had so many years ago for 20 years! I'm telling you they are all amazing and you will never be disappointed! I was so happy to see Tom but Ross wasn't in today or at least not when I was there. Just wanted to say hello. I then had a haircut by Cameron and I gave him 100% weight to cut it anyway he wanted it as it was below my shoulder, dried out, frizzy, shedding, out of shape past five or six months due to an accident I had and therefore could not attend any Salon. I didn't want him to save any bad hair just to cut it all off! He found a way to keep a little bit of length down to the bottom of my neck, which was ideal for me and he layered gently any hair that was higher than neck length to take off all the damaged hair. I thought it would take three visits months apart and yet he did it all in one visit by just gently layering and of course, cutting off several inches of the bad hair, which I knew I needed done immediately today! Both stylist did an amazing job and both had the most beautiful personalities. And of course, there's the Manager, Vassilio, and I apologize and I will correct the spelling as soon as I see her again! I looked up the directory for over a half hour so I did try to get it correct! Anyway, she is lovely on the telephone and so helpful and just beautiful in person, inside out! The whole entire experience was such such a joy and I had an accident about a year ago and looked forward to this day all year long. It was one of my happiest days in a long time so thank you John Barrett Salon, and those I mentioned and the lovely people I met in passing and the people I knew from a few years back. It's a fairly long review, but I hope it could help some people make a decision and it shouldn't be difficult to know that a salon that was at Bergdorf Goodman all these years, has to be at top Salon!
