This restaurant in Shawnee is in the same strip mall as the Westglen Theater, which is not among the most modern theaters in the KC area. We found the restaurant to be excellent. The dining room is elegant with comfortable tables and booths, including oval booths. The food includes healthy choices, such as whole wheat pasta in a very fine olive-oil based Italian sauce. For an Italian restaurant, this one has an unusual number of vegetarian and seafood choices. The fish section of the menu says "wild or naturally raised, delivered fresh daily." That statement is somewhat misleading. Indeed, they do have some seafood delivered each day, but you should not assume that all their seafood was delivered that day. On the day we were there, they had only one kind of fish delivered that day, and it was not on the menu, since it was planned to be served the next day. If you ask what fish came in that day, they'll tell you. Also I doubt that all the fish on the menu is "wild" caught. I am not sure what they mean by "naturally raised," but the Atlantic salmon on the menu is most likely farm raised. We very much enjoyed everything we ordered. Happy to help small businesses, including restaurants during what we all know is a very challenging time. I really enjoyed the food!!! The calamari was cooked perfectly with the right amount of flavors. The angel pasta with shrimp and the fish tacos were really good and tasty. The food portion were bigger than what I expected. We were so full that we didn't have room for the yummy dessert. Very Disappointing My first time there was last weekend - sat down after a short wait. Quickly got our menus and a drink order, Not long after that - we placed our order. After an HOUR - our food arrived - never saw the waiter in the meantime. One dish - the fish tacos, was just plain cold. Sent it back and shared the rest of our food - didn't want to wait an hour for a replacement. From the time our food arrived - until we got the check, we never saw the waiter. I had not been here for a couple of years, but Paulo and Bill has always been very good. We had dinner with another couple and had several issues. First, I had called the night before and made a reservation for 6 pm. When we arrived, there was no record of the reservation, but luckily, we were still able to be seated at our appointed time. We ordered the X rated Cosmopolitans, but the bar had run out of the liqueur to make them, so we had to make another selection. Our server was very nice, but was unable to answer any of the questions we asked about the drinks and the food without checking with others. Two of our party ordered pasta, and no bread basket was delivered, as was the custom previously. The most bothersome Issue we encountered was when an order was placed for the Fettuccine Alfredo, with the addition of shrimp for a $7 upcharge, only three shrimp were added to the entire dish. The food was all slightly more than adequate, but the overall experience was not what we were accustomed to from the years of going to this venue. Ordered dinner for carry out tonight for our anniversary. There was a nice brown bag with my name on it, all food items checked off. I paid the bill, provided them a 10% tip ( order was $100) and went home. After removing the contents of the bag we found we were missing meatballs for the spaghetti. I called them immediately and explained that we did not receive our full order even though all items had been checked as if it had been verified as complete. I was offered the choice of returning to pick them up or to receive a credit. I told the person to remove the tip while she was at it. Her response was "that's not very nice", to which I responded "well everything on order had been checked off as if it were complete, but it is not. Why do you deserve a tip exactly?" Maybe I was being mean, but seriously, all they needed to do was fill my order correctly. I drive 10 minutes each way, walked in and out while it was raining, paid the bill and tipped them for doing their job (as a team effort). I was given a credit for the meatballs, but my son had noodles and red sauce. Food was good, but come on, if you're working for tips pull you need to do your job. Next time I will make them remove each item before I pay. I suggest you do the same. read more

The food was horrible and the service was just as bad. I ordered Chicken Marsala and my friend ordered Chicken Piccata. The Marsala Sauce was burnt and the Chicken Piccata was inedible because it was so salty. When we brought it to the attention of the server, she said we were the only ones who seemed to be complaining about the food. The server kept trying to rush us, even though there were lots of available tables. The only redeeming quality were the cocktails, which saved this place from a 1-star rating. We had heard nothing but good things about this place so it was time for us to stop in for dinner. Our spur of the moment decision came early on Friday evening, so we wanted to head over before the majority of the dinner crowd. We were celebrating my wife's new job so we wanted something a little different than our typical night out. We didn't have the energy to venture out very far from where we live so this place worked out perfectly. We were sat immediately and it was probably a little before 6pm. Our waiter, Josh, was very polite and able to quickly make recommendations. I stepped out of my norm and ordered the espresso martini which was not as sweet as I expected, but that was a good thing. Stopped into Paulo and Bills for happy hour last week. We have heard the food was great, but as for the happy hour food there is a lot left to desire. We tried the bowtie pasta, flatbread, and lasagna rolls. The pasta and flatbread was pretty bland. LOVED the lasagna rolls, in hindsight we wished we just ordered several plates of this. We've been to this restaurant a couple times in the past so were super disappointed with our recent experience over the weekend. We were made to wait 15-20 minutes past our reservation time after receiving a lukewarm greeting by the front desk. The environment seemed messy and chaotic...trash on the floor, messy front desk, stacks of cardboard boxes on the counter in front of the pizza oven and a staff member standing in the middle of the restaurant rolling silverware with stacks of napkins around. Not a great first impression. It took a while for our server to stop by our table (although he was very personable during our few and brief interactions...most on this later). On to the food: the calamari and salads were ok (although we were happy to be able to find real calamari rather than the reconstituted strips that seem to be everywhere these days). However, the entrees (chicken parm and pecan salmon) were only so-so. The salmon dish came with huge, misshapen chunks of mushy carrots and the wild rice was extremely bland; the salmon was also under seasoned and came with an entirely too sweet sauce--I ate about half of this dish. The chicken parm, although generous in portion size, was just a typical, heavy rendition of this dish...nothing special. Our server literally disappeared after the salad course. We found out much later, after having to ask, that he had a personal emergency unfortunately (but was told he was ok, thank goodness); however, no one else picked up service for us even though there were numerous servers zipping busily around, completing lots of closing duties immediately around us (not great for dinner ambience). We waited at least 20 minutes after having finished our entrees and had pushed our plates aside, and finally had to flag someone down to request a dessert menu and to get the dirty dishes cleared from the table. The 'famous' brownie was over-the-top sweet with nothing else on the plate to balance that out, although TH did not seem to mind. On our way out, no one said thank you, or have a good night...nothing. I think P & Bs better days are well behind them. There are numerous other choices in Johnson County at this price point that offer a much better experience, in contrast to our recent visit. Mediocre. Smoked chicken lasagna unremarkable. Alfredo noodles unremarkable, sauce grainy AND should've been around $10 instead of $16. (How is chicken lasagna a buck cheaper than some noodles and cheese???) Very disappointed. I have been coming here for brunch for over 12 years, and every time the brunch has left me feeling like someone needs to roll this donut hole out! I over eat every time, I can't help it!! I never eat at this place unless its for BRUNCH!! There selection is great and its priced just right and I think it is the best bang for your buck in KC. $14.95 I think and that includes any drink or $3 for Mimosas and Bloody Mary's. There selection includes the breakfast staples but they do have some yummy different options including a veggie quiche and their fruit is super fresh. Their mini waffles and french toast are the cutest with their selection of berries, fresh whipped cream, butter and syrup. They are known for their Italian food which is the most disappointing on the buffet. Its cold and gummy, but back to the highlights. Don't skip the salad. I'm a serious carnivore but their shrimp salad is OMG and their house salad with dressing is quite yummy. They have carved meat station with prime rib and honey ham. And last but not least two words.... CHOCOLATE FOUNTAIN!!! (The trick is to take pineapple off the breakfast portion of the buffet to dip in chocolate) Also they have a selection of great little desserts with bread pudding and all kinds of little cakes and puddings. I don't get all the fuss is about Paulo and Bill. My date and I went on a Saturday night last fall. We got there around 8:00 pm, and there was a 20-25 minute wait. We stood for most of the wait, noticing that a lot of the guests looked like they could be our grandparents, or at least parents. Nothing wrong with that, just surprising. So, we finally get seated, in a nice, big, curved booth. My partner gave the waitress his drink order, Disaronno and coke. This totally threw her for a loop. She goes to the bartender, and the bartender didn't know what to do either. Finally, after several minutes, they find the right bottle, and bring him shot glass of Disaronno to go with the glass of Coca-Cola that was brought a few minutes earlier. I ordered the salmon dinner salad, which was nice and flavorful. My partner got the chicken fettuccine alfredo and described it as average. Now, when we orderd, we asked for bread. The server was like, "an order of garlic bread?" and we foolishly got suckered into buying a $5 appetizer that was about 4 slices of bread. The garlic bread was good, but it felt like a rip-off, especially when we were served plain bread with our meal. Plain bread is all we needed earlier, too! It felt like a cheap trick to upsell us. We weren't even using one of their coupons that is mailed with the Valpac coupon packet every month or two. read more

I was always under the assumption that Paulo and Bills was on the very expensive end of the spectrum, and thus, being the cheap skate that I am, avoided attending it. Coupons are a magical thing, that make me do things I wouldn't normally do...like go to places that I think are expensive. So Here we are. And I am pleased to say I was surprised to find excellent food, and prices that were not all that expensive, even without the buy one, get one coupon that came in the Valu Pak. The array of choices were amazing. Everything sounded good. Thankfully they offer a Combo plate, that you could select items from the soup, salad, sandwiches, and pasta menus, allowing a wider variety of sampling. The Shaved Beef was my choice, served with Fontina cheese, caramelized onions, on pressed foccacia, with a mustard/horseradish garnish, that really put some pizazz in the flavor. Meat was very tender, making this an instant favorite. Alongside was a sampling of pasta salad that had an outstanding dressing of light creamy sauce, that carried quite a little spicy kick. Unexpected but delicious. The salad that I selected had grilled chicken, apples,pears and goat cheese, with pecans that also had a spicy glazing that punched at the taste buds, Covered in a smooth and light pomegranite vinegarette..........sigh....I want another one now. Also on the table for today was Deburgo pasta. Tender morsels of beef tenderloin, with linguine in a white wine ,garlic oregano cream Big chunks of smokey mushrooms and onions. The onions were a little too predominant for me, and kind of distracted from the otherwise wonderful dish. thus keeping the 5th star from this review. Don't get me wrong, it was still a delicious dish, just had to pick around some of the onions. Service was provided but not one but two different wait staffers, making the tipping a bit akward. but was more than adequate. Even without our coupon, the price was reasonable..even a little cheaper than some of the upscale bar and grilles in the area. But check your Valu Paks..you could be in for a stellar meal at half the cost. I will be returning and soon...other items on that menu are begging to be sampled! read more

Tortellini is one of my weaknesses. Throw in some creamy sauce and bacon, and well, I don't think anything could go wrong. This dish was finger-licking good (if I were using my fingers!). Complimentary bread and balsamic vinegar/oil makes me even happier! The others at my table ordered the gnocchi and the bowtie pasta - both looked equally as appetizing! I can't say I'll be back to try either anytime soon, since I was only here for a short visit, but if I happened to be in the area again I wouldn't mind stopping by! I used to eat here all the time. I guess there are more choices now, so I forget about this place. It is located in an area that really isn't next to much else except an aging movie theatre. The food is really nice, with an emphasis on pasta, pizza and roasted meat. The interior feels a little Bellagio, but in a cozy way. An open air kitchen and outdoor seating gives it a little something extra. If you are looking for a great place for Mother's Day or Easter, this elevated buffet is one of the best in the city. Paulo and Bill's is kind-of an old stand-by for me - I've been going since the mid-1990s, way back when my husband and I started dating. It holds a special place in my heart. Once owned by the PB&J Group, Paulo underwent a change of ownership probably more than 10 years ago. Luckily for me they've kept on their menu a staple from PB&J, Paulo's Coconut Chicken Salad. And that is just the cornerstone reason why I keep coming back. I remember when this restaurant first opened, all shiny and new and in the middle of nowhere, at least the city has started creeping towards their I-435 and Midland location. Today Paulo's is a little more broken in, but in no way is it tired. The staff and owners work to keep the place in good shape. And, speaking of staff, I don't think I've ever had bad service at Paulo's. My lunch companion on Friday, March 16, commented on how many people dropped by our table to check on us - our server, the owner and a couple of other staff members. Also, the owner, while I am aware of who he is, isn't one of those pesky, annoying owners out in the dining room rubbing elbows with customers because he's a big-shot restaurateur, he's out delivering meals to his customers and making sure they have what they need to enjoy their food. I like that. We started our lunch with the fried calamari - a dish I don't normally order because I'm trying too hard to be highbrow. Luckily my companion insisted. Man, I'm glad we got it because the calamari was sweet and tender and the breading was delicate. Note to self: don't try so hard, just enjoy food. On this day I was, once again, craving the Paulo's Coconut Chicken Salad - a delicious concoction of coconut breaded fried chicken served over a bed of lettuce with tomatoes, avocado, artichoke, and hard-boiled egg and dressed with a sweet and tangy house-made honey mustard dressing. Magnifico. My dining companion was looking for something meat-less to satisfy his Lenten cravings. He ordered cheese ravioli in a spicy vodka sauce and commented several times on how good the dish was. His first trip to Paulo's = success. Pricey but they had a lot of variety and several items were unique and flavorful, so it felt worth it, though I wouldn't spend this much on a single meal very often. Read Jason T's review, dude... this isn't downtown Paris. The detail of complaint put into the peas and the percentage of crust on the appetizer's bread? Too much man. I almost gave them 5 stars just to counter your stuffy, judge-down-your-nose, what is this Top Chef or Chopped?, review. Only reasons for 4 stars instead of 5 is that it took a long time to get answers to a member's allergy questions and options were very limited. But based on the experience my boyfriend and I had - food, service,etc - I feel that it's the best review that I can give. Well, nothing left to do but to get on with the review. Shall we? We came here on a Saturday evening after discovering that Barley's had a near 40 minute wait. We decided to give Paulo & Bill a try (based on hunger and the previous yelp reviews). Luckily the wait was short and we were seated fairly quickly for a Saturday evening. Once seated it did take some time before we were able to order drinks - but I think that was more due to the fact that it was busy that night rather than anything to do with our waitress. Once we got our drinks (diet Coke for him Riesling for me); we had to wait yet again for the bread and for her to come and take our order. Once we got that out of the way...we finally settled in to eating dinner. The food, the best thing that I can say...is that while food was well cooked there was absolutely no true seasoning/flavor. I'm a fan of letting the food shine for itself...but there is something to be said for appropriate seasoning. I mean seriously, food at least some salt or something?? I think I covered the flatbread pizza I ordered in pepper and that only helped somewhat. My boyfriend felt the same way with his Mushroom ravioli. It came with 'spicy vokda sauce' and both of us agreed that the meal was quite bland. It just needed something extra. The only (maybe) highlight for me was the bread they provided at the beginning of the meal - it was mostly fresh? Thankfully, true to some of my favorite Italian places they served the bread with Balsamic Vinegar and Olive Oil. Redeemed the meal somewhat. I really wanted to like this place, but overall was disappointed. There are point where I want to try coming back, specifically because they offer gluten free pasta.
