The sandwiches are good, but it takes too long to get them even when lunchtime hasn't started. I came in earlier, ordered a Q sandwich, and spent 15 minutes, half my lunch break, waiting for it. And when I got my sandwich and said it took a long time, someone behind the counter got mad and told me they were too busy - no apology, let alone asking me what could be done to make it up to me. It's really trying to go for that cool, unique, hipster coffeehouse vibe but it's a chain that seemingly only hires hipsters. The food and coffee are fine, and it's always busy because it's the only coffeehouse on/near BU's campus. You're better off going to Tatte (Stumptown Coffee and unreal food). But the real kicker? They have about 6 2 person hightops, but for some reason, only 2 of them have two stools. I asked if they had additional stools and an employee looked at me like I was crazy asking this information and said they don't. Been here twice for hot chocolate - it's delicious here! Very easily accessible location. Only downside is it seems to be very crowded every time I go with little seating space open. Definitely wouldn't go during peak hours. Great study spot if you manage to snag a seat in the back area. read more

So far I really like the place except for some annoying college kids who feel the need to constantly bragging about their uninteresting life. I understand it's a coffee house, a place for socializing and hangout. But, honestly, do you have to make a scene to impress an aloof stranger who will not in the future care about your life? Agh, kids! Nevertheless, enough rant about some of the annoying customers, the Spanish Latte is my fave here. This coffee shop is definitely somewhere worth visiting- very pleasing aesthetic and friendly staff. Coffee was great and inexpensive for the quality. The restaurant also has cool lids that reduce straw usage which is super nice. Very family friendly and music was provided a great atmosphere for studying or just hanging out with friends. read more

The reason I like Pavement so much comes down to two primary factors: 1) the product is superior--the coffee and tea are always great, no matter which you choose, and the bagels and sandwiches are superb, 2) the atmosphere is well-executed, if a bit crowded at peak hours. I was in Australia for several months and I missed drip coffee, which is practically non-existent Down Under. The batch coffee at Pavement is succulent to describe it in a word. I have never had a problem with the baristas here, either--my cappuccinos and cortados are always done right. In terms of complaints about service: it can be slow, but this place gets absolutely swamped with students during the school year. My suggestion? Go to Pavement to chill out for an hour (the WiFi is free for 120 minutes). Personally, whether I am in a hurry or not it's worth the gamble and the occasionally flippant "hipster" service for their coffee and bagels. read more

Bagels have really been horrible recently. For $4.28, you'd at least expect to get some cream cheese. My bagel barely had any today and I was severely disappointed. You can walk to Dunkin, Brueggar's, etc. and get a bagel with 3x the cream cheese at half the price. Please fix this. read more

Great space, but often very hard to find a seat. I've only been on Sundays, so that could be it, but it's still kind of discouraging. The one time I wanted to order on a Sunday, they were out of most of the pastries by 3 p.m. Too bad I could not try anything. So I have experienced this Pavement's evolution into what it appears to be today. I have a lot of feelings that I'd like to share. I love the addition of tablet ordering. It's fast and efficient and emails me my receipt. However, this speedy beginning is met with painfully slow delivery of items ordered. Typically on a busy weekday morning they have one barista, one person doing the food orders, two people taking orders, and twenty people waiting by the food pick up window which is inconveniently located at the opposite side of the beverage pick up window. #chaos. However, I do like the improvement of table delivery by number if you decide to eat in. When will the guys at Pavement corporate (wherever that is) realize that their bagels suck. (Is it still bagel rising?) And when will they figure out that their limited selection of bagel types would be laughed at by anyone who has been to a New York Deli. Even so, I enjoy the food menu options and particularly enjoy the veggie tofu cream cheese which should be a staple at all bagel shops. But please. I'm begging you. Switch your bagel supplier to someone who has had a good bagel in their lifetime. Finally, the bevs. Really decent coffee that is made well and always served scalding. I'm also a fan of their tea options (plum cinnamon iced tea being my current favorite). With the word coffeehouse in their name, thank goodness they live up to it. Quick facts- only one hour free of painfully slow internet. Seats are random and occasionally hard to come by- but guaranteed uncomfortable. Average customer during the school year is a BU student with a laptop but the summer quiets down drastically. Prices are fair. In the winter, opt for a hot apple cider. read more

I never frequented this particular location when it was in the Bagel Rising family (RIP), so I can't fairly compare it to what it once was. The bagel with lox is still decent, but I haven't tried any other pastries. What I have done is enjoyed the coffee-only line. I rarely get food here; I want my large coffee with room and hopefully quickly, so I can get out the door. Thankfully, Pavement, knowing how tediously long it can feel to wait behind 8 bagel-and-latte orders when all you want is a cup of Joe, has established a line for those of us who want a quick in-and-out. They brew Counter Culture coffee, which is far superior to Dunks and Starbucks (sorry not sorry). I can add my half-skim-half-soy milk concoction and be on my merry way in five minutes. Be careful putting the tops on the coffee, though, folks. I somehow managed to pop the top off of my cup the other day and it spilled all over the floor and my hand. read more

Pavement Coffee is my preferred tea/bakery place on campus. I quite like that it's not a Starbucks and that they have a good loose-leaf tea selection (I'm a tea drinker, and I'm heartily sick of Starbucks bagged teas). That being said, it's not the be-all end-all of coffee places either. Pros: - great loose-leaf tea selection - they serve your food and drinks on/in real dishes to reduce waste - they have Bagel Rising bagels (super tasty!) - they offer vegan sandwiches, vegan bagel spreads, vegan cookies, chocolate, and muffins - great hipster/people watching - nice decor, great update compared to what ERC used to look like Cons: - nine times out of ten, they mess up my order somehow (cheese on my vegan sandwich, out of most ingredients for the vegan tequila sunrise sandwich, no vegan cookies left, no vegan muffins left... I've seen it all) - the line at the cash register is weird, I always accidentally enter from the wrong end, and other people do this too, so it can get quite confusing when it's busy - it's always busy; I keep seeing undergrads that take up a whole table just to check their Facebook newsfeed for the next hour - they run out of baked goods starting at 2-3pm on some days Will I come back? Definitely. But I will take my food to go because I don't even expect to find an open table. read more

Cute coffeeshop near BU. I came in to grab a coffee before going to the library, but the place was empty and the atmosphere just invited me in to sit and do my studying for a couple of hours. They offer 2 hours of free wifi and the option to pay for additional time. I can imagine this place being full with students when school starts up again, so I wouldn't come here to do serious studying. People's conversations travels through the room and I couldn't really focus on my text. It could have been one particular group that was louder than normal, but I'd keep that in mind next time. read more

The new look is definitely pleasant, and while I'm skeptical that the checkout layout and table arrangement are any more efficient than historically, they certainly feel roomier. The drinks seem about the same--espresso drinks are fine, nice iced and hot tea selection, and I haven't tried their drip again yet but it was pretty bad before, even for pre-made drip. I've bought beans here before and they were old and awful. I initially thought counter culture beans were just awful, but I had the same beans down the street at the clover food truck (now gone, sad), fresh brewed, and it was great. I also just tried a couple of their new sandwiches. The Harvest, which I ordered second, was pleasant and healthy tasting but nothing to write home about. The first sandwich I had was the Pastoral: roast herbed sweet potato, caramelized onions, apple, goat cheese and arugula on rustic bread. It was so gross I couldn't eat a second bite. I think it was that the cold sweet potato was mushy and the onions, also cold, were kind of slimy. But there was also just a weird taste to it. Lots of sweet and mushy with no contrast--nothing tart or savory really (the apple was sweet and the cheese and arugula were both mild and didn't contribute much. Really a bummer. It sounded so tasty. They were polite (though not quite friendly) when I returned it and they comped the second sandwich so that was good. So, generally some quality issues. It doesn't seem like pavement really has the management necessary for excellence, but as far as adequate coffee shops go, this one is improved. I like the coffee products they're stocking now (I was planning to buy a Clever dripper and a Hario mini mill on Amazon, so it was nice to buy them at a local coffee shop instead). read more

The vegan Tequila Sunrise is a delicious addition to the Pavement menu at the former 736 Comm Ave ERC location. The flavor and texture of the breakfast/anytime sandwich is wonderful, especially on 7 grain bread. The Harvest Root lunch sandwich is also delicious (love the beets). The Gatherer also has beets and has fantastic flavor (imagine goat cheese, honey and cranberries for contrast) but is a bit heavy making a half sandwich desirable if that were possible. Alas, it is not. The coffee shop makeover is nice, especially the coffee/tea only line (cookies and such are on offer too), but the sandwich/coffee tea line is awkward with the sandwiches delivered at the back of the store and the drinks at the front, requiring a lot of running/walking back and forth to retrieve items. read more

Being new to Boston, I found Pavement on a Top 10 list. I went there with a friend and chose the wrong location. Being across the road from Boston University is great for their business and to take away, but not so great for stopping in to sit for a coffee. We managed to get a seat outside and being a great day, it was lovely. The service was great, quick and easy and the coffee itself had a great taste and I'll be trying another location for sure. read more

Nice little college coffee shop near BU, located across the street from Marsh Chapel. I've gone here several times when I've had to kill a couple of hours in this area, and it's served me well. It feels larger, more spacious, quieter and less bustling than the Pavement on Boylston St. (granted, when I've come here it's usually been in the evenings; I assume it gets busier during the day). In any case, it's seems easier to get a table here than at the Boylston location. Stale pastries this morning: the two day old almond rolls (it s an insult to use the name "croissant" for those rolls) and a raspberry gone bad inside the stale cranberry scone gave me a serious indigestion. Add to that the so-called hot chocolate, which has zero cocoa but an oversweetened dose of brown syrup (most likely corn syrup), and the place would deserve only one star. However, the staff is friendly and the place is well kept, so I gave two stars. If you're an indiscriminate student, I suppose its OK, and plenty enjoy the space to work in. I have a dairy allergy but still enjoy a bagel sandwich. I order online because of COVID and specifically put NO CHEESE and DAIRY ALLERGY on my order. I receive my order and open it up and theres a nice layer of cheese on top. Clearly the people who work there do not pay attention or care about their customers not getting sick. When I went back and told them, I got the most attitude from employees I have ever gotten. They glared at me and handed me back my re-made sandwich with so much snark and attitude. When I started BU last year as a freshman, pavement quickly became my favorite place to grab a quick meal or coffee as well as to sit and study. I once spent 4 hours here writing a paper. When I returned this year I noticed that they had drastically changed their menus. I was willing to accept, and even be in favor of, the change as long as the new options were of the same quality as the old. Unfortunately they are not. While I really hate writing negative reviews, especially about a place like pavement, the summer switch changed them for the worse. They have far fewer vegan options - the vegan tequila sunrise was my favorite and it was eliminated from the menu along with the vegan cream cheeses I had so enjoyed. They did replace it with a tasty almond spread and they still have the vegan muffin and scone but I really miss being able to enjoy a vegan friendly cream cheese on my bagel. It seems that they also raised their prices, seeing as my iced coffee and bagel with almond spread, lettuce and tomato was over $8. I used to go to pavement because I could rely on my breakfast being cheaper and higher quality than anything I could get at Starbucks. While the quality is still high, it is not high enough to justify the price. My last comment is that it seems service has slowed a lot as well. When I went in this morning there was no line and still I had to wait 10 minutes for my bagel to be ready. While none of this will stop me from being a loyal pavement customer, the changes have made the experience far less enjoyable than it used to be and I do hope that they return to the read more

Been going here for years but finally had to write something because I can't take it anymore! The coffee is fine and the staff are all super nice but man they cannot take an order. over fifty percent of the time they get my order wrong, and for very simple orders. They give me my coffee to go when it's for here. They give it to me for here when I ask for it to go. They give me iced when I never mentioned iced; they give me hot when I say loud and clearly "iced coffee." I don't understand. It's either they aren't paid enough to care or they're too busy listening to the loud music to pay attention. Very frustrating. I feel bad writing this because, as I say, the staff are all super nice. But man it's getting annoying. read more

Coffee & Bagels: if you have ever kindly complained or ordered anything with a substitute or somehow gotten on their nerves by minding your own business and patiently waiting, beware them having tampered with your food or drink behind the obstructed counter or your back. Service: bratty passive-agressive baristas and bagel makers who stare, glare, and sneer. 1 or 2 bad apples, including managers, spoil it although it's usually at least half of the counter staff in afternoon/morning. Please don't dump your hard-earned or inherited money at Comm Ave Pavement again--certainly not with the current arrangement. I will always be a pavement, but walked in today and saw the new menu. I'm surely going to miss my tequila sunrise in the morning. Also paying 6.50 for an egg and cheese sandwich is surely a disappointment (a $2.00 increase from the original price) I'd understand if it blew the previous sandwich under the water but I wasn't impressed with the price. The Chaider (chai + cider) was pretty good, but they forgot my bagel order. When I got it, it was barely toasted and subpar.

This place sucked when it was Espresso Royale and it still sucks as Pavement. I mean, the espresso drinks and bagels are tasty, but I would expect nothing less considering it's the main focus of the establishment. It's the service that's the problem. Way slower than it should be, and they always make mistakes on my order when I go there! At first I thought, oh it must be a fluke, but can it be a fluke if it pretty much happens every time!? I've talked with others and they think the same thing. The last time I went (and it will be the LAST time), was the first time I'd gone after the Espresso Royale/Pavement makeover. They have redesigned their operations so that food and drink orders are delivered on opposite ends of the restaurant, and handled by separate people who do not coordinate. What? So I have to pick up my coffee at one end, put it down, and then walk to the other end to wait for my bagel, which might be ready at a very different time than my coffee? How does that make any sense? If you're going to make customers trek all over creation, at least time the orders right so that my coffee is not cold by the time I get my bagel. The problem was worse with me because they LOST my bagel order, so I waited for many other people to get their bagels before before I finally realized I would need to re-place my order. Also, I ordered a cup of ice water and the register man said, "We have a self-serve water over there." When I pointed out it was empty, he said he would refill it, which he didn't. So after waiting 15 minutes for my bagel (coffee was definitely cold by now), I asked if I could have a cup of ice water, which he brought to me. Got a few "sorry"s for this service but Pavement really needs to rethink their whole operations if this is how they're running things. I bet they'll stay in business no matter what because students will just continue to flock in. Regardless, figure it out, guys. Bagels and espresso drinks. Not that hard. I work at a coffee shop so I know my way around a cafe a little bit. Pavement is cute and convenient, it has a nice hipster vibe and is a chill place to get some work done but as far as coffee quality goes, this place sucks. For one whenever I order hot coffee it is acidic and sour tasting meaning it was brewed a long time ago and is no longer fresh. They advertise cold brew ice coffee meanwhile they hot brew it right in front of the customers. Their espresso drinks are pretty good but they have jacked up prices on everything, a small ice coffee for $3, bagel for $7 (place I work is comparatively $2 and $4). It is a good stop for convenience but if I want a good cup of coffee is rather travel a little to get a quality cup from where I work. read more
