Our 3 year old tankless water heater suddenly stopped working. We found Payless Water Heaters & Plumbing online and called them. They agreed to come out between 8am-10am the next morning. The service tech did not show up until 12:45pm. Almost 3 hours after the agreed time frame. Then he inspected the water heater and told us that the code on the unit indicated that the fan was malfunctioning and that the whole unit needed a full servicing and cleaning that would cost $500. We told him we only wanted the fan cleaned since that was the problem. He then had to call his supervisor to get permission to only clean the fan and charge us $260. We agreed. After an hour he then told us he found a broken wire. A wire that according to the tech looked like it had either been cut or was a manufacture defect. We explained we had never opened the unit and nobody cut the wire. Why would we cut the wire?? Plus the unit had been working fine for 3+ years until he suddenly found this broken wire. How could it have worked properly the entire time with a defective wire until the moment he started working on it? He said that he didn't break the wire during the cleaning although he also admitted that he should have taken a picture before he attempting to work on it. He gave us excuse after excuse. But ultimately he would have to come back the next day to call the manufacturer to diagnose the problem to determine what exact part was broken. Then he would have to come out again and charge another $500 for a 45 minute install on top of the $260 that we already paid to clean the unit that did not fix the problem. We now need to spend $1, 800 to buy a whole new unit plus labor to install because a wire suspiciously broke as soon as the Payless tech started working on it. This place is dishonest, unscrupulous, deceitful and has unethical business practices preying on unsuspecting customers who are desperate for help. Don't trust a word they say. Stay away from this company at all cost. read more

Our water heater started leaking three days ago, and we made an appointment with Payless for the first time. It was a no-show. When rechecking the automated text, whoever spoke to my dad had put 4-6 AM instead of 4-6 PM, which was the agreed-upon time. By 6 PM, we gave them a call, and they told us Oopsie, and no one is around at this time to help us. WTF! We were quite irritated at this point, debating if we should find someone else, but stuck with it since they were already on the line and most businesses were probably closed by now, not really leaving much of an option. Whoever spoke to my father at their front desk gets 0 stars for professionalism, but the guy who came to replace our water heater today, Carlos, was great. The 5 stars are just for him. He came right on time, explained things well, and was easy to talk to. I was surprised it was only one person working on this, as those things look heavy. He was able to promptly remove our leaky water heater and replace it with a new one. I did not feel like we were being taken advantage of price-wise, although water heaters are still expensive... it probably would have been more expensive elsewhere. I got a call from the company offerring a mainanence on our tankless waterheater. Since the waterheater is 6 years old I agreed. A technician came tried to do mainenace and fried the motherboard. He didn't know what to do. He broke our water heater and left us without hot water. I paid for the mainenace. The next day another technician came and blamed everyhing on a leak! Now they need to do more repairs and parts replacement charging much more ! The initial installation was also a problem. Another plumber noticed that the pipe did't have enough tilt that can cause a potential leak. Sure enough. Now I am blamed for what was installed incorrectly at the first place and now it became my problem that the technician fried the motherboard! Is it a scam to get more money? We had no problems with the unit before they started messing with it. I regret I belived them and agreed to do the work... Called in the morning for a repair due to a leaking water heater connection. I was given an appointment window of 10:30a-12:30p, later I received a call that there was a delay with the technician " he got started late" and they would need to push back my appointment time to 1p-3p. At almost 2p I get another call that the technician will not be able to arrive today. That the current customer job is" complicated". They will have to reschedule for tomorrow. Meanwhile I have a leak in my garage. I would have appreciated better communication and more transparency with the availability for repair. I felt jerked around. I would have made additional efforts early on to find another company if I was going to be rescheduled to the next day. So I called another company " Water Heaters Only" which arrived within 45 min.
