One of the default places to eat near campus for a lot of my friends. Cheap, filling and right across the street. Cash only, but portions are huge albeit greasy. I just discovered the chicken teriyaki there which is pretty good. I had no idea that they served rice before... The sandwiches are yummy and my friend is in love with the egg salad sandwiches. Service: The woman taking our order did not seem to know what it meant to be an attendant. She ignored other customers while they ordered. Both my sister and I had to ask her if we could order...She didn't call orders out or be sure to check with her. She left food on the counter till it was old and had to reheat it for customers (but she seemed annoyed?) Didn't check ticket numbers at all either. And took orders wrong! Food: Average if I could say the least. Only one cook for the whole joint. AND it took 40 minutes to get a burger and an omelette? Fries are a no-no, seems like they get frozen fries and just toss them on the grill to defrost. Owner was at the cashier...didn't say a word to me, not that friendly. OMG. So. Good. The only reason why I'm giving 4 stars is because the set up of this place is a little confusing (two entrance doors to this place, line should form from the right door flowing left to the cash register). Maybe they should put up an arrow or sign? We also followed the 3 couples in line before us and it was obviously their first time here too. Anyway, Boy got: sausage breakfast. Hash browns were perfect as well the buttery toast. He said the bacon he ordered on the side was a little fatty but yummy non the less. I got: bacon, avocado, tomato omelet. You know how every college a spot students go to? This is the place for SJSU The decor is very plain. Rustic? Quaint? There's shadow boxes with Greek letters and names decorating the place. Cash only, which is no big deal since there are many places like that in San Jose The lunch specials are amazing if you're trying to ball-on-a-budget which do change daily. First of all this place isn't your I-want-to-taste-something-delicious-for-breakfast cafe so get that mind off that almost 4 star rating. If you're health conscious, stay away from this place. If you can spare a little more than $5 for breakfast, go somewhere else and you'll have a more satisfying meal. The proportions are big but very very oily. This is another fav place of mine, I've been coming here for years. You can't go wrong coming here for breakfast or lunch. It's a popular dive with the San Jose State students and faculty. Everyday there's some kind of special going on. The food is great, portions are large, prices are fit for the SJSU students other words price is cheap good for the student who's on a budget. I've tried just about everything here. When the main cook (I won't mention his name) is behind the counter I just tell him to surprise me and he makes me what ever he wants and he hasn't missed a beat yet. The owner (I won't mention his name) and his wife got a good thing going on here, he's a really great guy along with his wife who are easy to talk to and he keeps me updated on any good gossip going around! This is a popular place with non-SJSU students and faculty some of my friends tell me about this place and are surprised when I tell them I know the owner, just last Thursday I saw a buddy I hadn't seen in years and he lives in South San Jose and were only there to eat lunch with his Mom and wife. The food here was sooo bad, we were grossed out. We were in the area and starving so quickly looked on yelp for somewhere close by to eat. Unfortunately, we wound up here. It looks like this place mostly serves young college kids and I can imagine that the portions and food is generous for a student. It is very much self service. You order your food, pay, then pick it up from the kitchen counter. The cook is rather rude and loud and impatient. My salad I ordered w/out dressing and am on a no dairy diet a few lettuces were mixed in with ranch as if they had tossed someones leftovers in. I ordered no cheese on my omelet, it still had a very cheap processed american cheese inside (think dollar store version of processed kraft cheese slices). I would not trust the quality of food, cleanliness or service from this place. Nope! I just read another review on here of someone saying that the staff spoke in spanish about messing with their food in front of them. It reminds me of my salad which had bits of lettuce with ranch on the leaves even though I ordered no dressing. I thought they had tossed someones leftovers in my salad! I hope the health department cracks down on them. Horrible place, even for college students you can do better they aren't that cheap. I used to come here a lot during my college days. What happened to this place?! It used to be raved and talked about so much. They even won awards back then. Everytime I leave this place, I keep saying "never again" and then find myself here for some reason or another. Everyone likes to come here to get a pitcher of beer after class, and just kick back, which is fine and dandy as long as I don't have to touch the food. I came here for breakfast, and ordered the "two eggs and sausage" meal that came with hashbrowns and toast. Oh. Man. I took one glance at my plate and felt sort of queasy. It is totally unhealthy, hard to find parking (if you're not on campus), and crowded during peak hours...but the food is deeelicious and the beer cheap. Yeah! This is the anti-christ of cafe pomegranate. Its greasy, has large portions, can feed a drove of college students, has a ton of french fries for those in potato famine, and you just get that college feel. Its cash only, which sucks, and you feel like a heifer after you eat your meal, but who cares. Your young, you just had class, exam, presentation, and you are hungry. The owner is always at the register and is completely nice and when I was short a dollar, told me to just pay him back later. The head cook, is sweet and completely adorable (tall dark and handsome, but beware ladies, he is gay). This place has some unexpectedly excellent French fries. You can order them well done and they'll fry it up extra nice for you, you can drench them in ketchup and hot sauce, overall an excellent side for your beer. Also what's super good here is the teriyaki chicken or beef, soak those in hot sauce and you'll have a very filling value lunch. Peanuts as been for years the "go-to" spot for San Jose State Students to grab some decently priced food as well as a pitcher or two of beer. They have a decent selection of beers on tap, as well as a somewhat large menu. The ambience is perfect for a university student trying to just grab a pitcher with a friend, with their wall decor, music, as well as their SJSU merch/decorations around the place. One minor complaint I have is that many times the bathrooms aren't in the best condition, as well as the fact the bathroom and the bathroom door probably both need to be remodeled soon. The service and staff are friendly and well mannered, which is a huge plus. So I transferred to SJSU Spring 2008 and I find it hard to believe I have neglected this place for far too long! I went here today and was so happy to find a place that was so economically friendly for the average college student's budget. I had a Philly Cheesesteak for 5.50 that came WITH fries. Awesome!!! After a failed attempt to go rafting one morning, me and my friends ended up having breakfast at this hole in the wall place near SJSU campus. My boyfriend found it on yelp and said that they were a lot of reviews PLUS it had only one dollar sign for expense. So, I decided to trust him and go for it. Boy was it a mistake. I wouldn't come back and here is why... My friend ordered two hotcakes (pancakes) with 3 stripes of oil drenched bacon. It looked gross, it tasted "boring" so he said and I would not have ordered that at all. My boyfriend got the french toast and added 2 dollars for the same 3 stripes of oil drenched bacon. His french toast was made with the same slices of white bread I got as "toast." BLAH. He liked it, but his standards of taste are low. I ordered the veggie omlettle, unsure of what was inside. To my surprise there was a lot of bell peppers, onions and slices of melted cheese in my omlette. IT WAS GROSSSSSSS. Hash browns were soggy of oil and they didn't even ask what kind of toast I wanted and just gave me white bread. I was not happy. Yeah it was cheap, cash only place. But it was not good. Look I don't mind cheap food, but it has to be at least somewhat good. I hated this place. And I'm guess all the SJSU students come here to eat and love the prices, hence all the reviews. SJSU's diamond in the rough. You're not a true Spartan if you haven't heard or eaten here. This is THE place to come for a cheap and decent meal on a college student income. Way more times than I can count my friends and I came here to eat breakfast, lunch, hang out, skip class, even drink beer!? A whaaaaat..yea you heard right. It's not a 5 star restaurant with waiters filling up your water, so don't expect it.... It is what it is. The Fairmont is a couple blocks further if you're expecting more. Peanuts is your typical college spot. A good 'ol fashion restaurant, hole in the wall type of place where hungry students come to eat some tasty food, decent portions and at remarkably dirt cheap prices. A buncha tables and chairs with students filling the room and even the occasional old school ppl chatting over coffee. Their menu has a variety of breakfast and lunch items so there's plenty to choose form. The workers were always friendly and not to mention they had two big screen tvs playing the local game or show. Not too shabby. Although there aren't any Snoopy memorabilia hanging around, I've definitely come here countless times and got my money and tummys worth. If your not in the quad at the student union or whatever hang out spot you and your friends have marked, you'll find yourself here..as my friends and I would chant when we decided to come here... I'm a first timer here so some things confused me, I figured it's pay where you order; but it's order first, they give you a ticket, grab a drink, then pay. So I had ordered the ribeye steak and two eggs and extra crispy hash. It was a special for under $9, how could you go wrong with that? Toast - I'm pretty sure they gave me wheat toast with butter only on the corners, whatever I'm big I'll accept it. Hash browns (-1) - extra crispy? more like extra not. Eggs (-1) - It's eggs, how could you mess up on sunny side up eggs? Undercooked on top, anyone ever teach you to put a lid on top of the eggs till it faintly cooks? Great for breakfast. My favorite is the sausage omelet, hash browns, and toast. All for $4ish. The hash browns are great if you aren't a snob and recognize that they are full of fat and preservatives. Same goes for the omelet and toast. These are also the reasons why the food tastes so good. Felt adventurous after a long night of drinking...so came here for the reviews and cheap food. The service here is just so so. The lady who took my order literally never said a word to me lol. It's a good thing the cashier was nice. However, the ATM is annoying as heck because it doesn't work the first time you try it and it's kinda scary not knowing if you got charged the first time or not. The bathrooms are dreadful and the restaurant is definitely dated by a few decades, which I didn't really mind. A plus is that they have a TV and beer at this place.
