Food: 3/5 Local takeout spot Very hole-in-the-wall, mom + pop style. Lunchtime STEAL- big portions w protein, veggies, carbs + comes w soup. Veggies + soup change often depending on season/availability. Heads Up: cash only, no seating. What I Ordered: - Fried Fish Over Rice: breading got a little soggy from the walk home. well seasoned. surprise minced beef(?) + tea egg

You cannot judge this book by its cover. Pearl Garden may sound and look like your average Chinese-American takeout joint, but looks are deceiving. The old pictures up on the board showing moo goo gai pan and beef & broccoli are misleading and probably left over from the previous owners. Don't try ordering General Tso's chicken here. The menu is surprisingly short as compared to previously mentioned takeouts. It now features mainly Taiwanese specialties and they're amazingly cooked by a Chinese grandma. As I walked in, she yells from the kitchen what I would like. My Taiwanese is spotty to non-existent, so I just point to the menu items I would like. She loads up a round plastic container with rice, some meat sauce, cabbage, eggplant , a soy sauce egg and a fried chicken leg that looked like it came from an emu. The chicken was a little overcooked and underseasoned but still good. Pictures of the containers are misleading because they are not the normal 6" diameter takeout ones. They are the 8" oversize. In the other container she puts a huge fried fish fillet the size of my shoe. It would be an order of British fish & chips if you replaced the rice with fries. Then she asks if I want soup. How did she know I love soup?? I gleefully said "yes, please!" and she dips a big ladle into a huge pot on the stove to fill 2 pint containers. It turns out to be bitter melon & pork bone soup with lots of ginger that's been simmering all day. It's really tasty and included with each rice dish. Pearl Garden is just off the first exit (14th Ave) from the Whitestone Bridge and super convenient on my way home to pick up a quick dinner. Free parking is available around the corner on the side streets. It says they are closed on Mondays & Tuesdays, but I took a chance today and walked out with a huge amount of amazing food. I'm curious to see what the Taiwanese Bento Boxes will be like, especially the Railroad Bentos. Next time: Eel Rice & Jia Jiang Mein!

Delicious food with big portions. Free dessert (sweet soup) or regular soup. Friendly service, hands down.

This no frills takeout place offers authentic homemade style Taiwanese rice dishes and noodles. We ordered pork chop over rice, beef stew noodle soup and a chicken leg. The beef stew was surprisingly delicious and comes with a good amount of beef. The pork chop is seasoned well with a bit of sweetness over rice with a side of eggplant, zucchini and an egg. The side order of chicken leg was huge for only $6.

Haven't been here for months. Called on a Sunday 3:45 pm. Pick up ready within an hour. The store itself nothing changed much. No dine in. Nice little old lady still works the counter. - Bento box #8: Eel, chicken leg ( not a chicken leg, it's a piece of fried chicken cutlet), pork chop over rice. $18. Portion is smaller, chicken and pork is thin and dry. Eel was awesome as before. - Each dish comes with half quart of choice of salty soup or sweet soup ( dessert). If you want more, you pay extra $3 for half quart and $7 for one quart. - the salty soup of the day is pork and vegetable soup. Like before, it's tasty and lots of fresh ingredients. Minimal to none of MSG taste. - Sweet soup of the day is 糯米粥, sticky rice porridge. It's obviously less ingredients than before but nevertheless tasty with perfect sweetness.

this is an extremely small mom and top take-out place that serves the most delicious taiwanese home cooking! when i came by it was literally just the elderly couple taking orders, doing all the cooking, running the shop... so do be prepared to wait if you aren't calling ahead. i ordered the sea, land, sky combo bento (with eel, chicken cutlet and pork chop) and taiwanese beef over rice. both meals came with a container of soup - i believe the choices rotate but the day i came the options were sparerib soup or glutinous rice sweet soup.. i chose the sparerib soup. the soup was so good. i will be calling in and ordering just the soup in the future. each serving had turnip, carrots, one giant fishball with mince filling, and pork ribs. it tasted super fresh and homey and helped cut through the sweetness/richness of the other food. sea, land, sky bento - this was good, although i always forget i'm not that crazy about eel lol. the pork and chicken were delicious. this came with bok choy, a cake of julienned carrot ribbons and rice with some sweet minced sauce. the serving size is seriously massive and could easily feed 2 or be the only thing you eat for the day. taiwanese beef over rice - the beef was so tender and soft, it really melts in your mouth! it did have a lot of fat running through it which i'm not a huge fan of but that's a personal preference. it came with a yummy soy egg, carrots, okra, thin strips of egg, and rice. again, the quantity is massive. really good food and this is the type of business i love supporting. worth trekking out to this out of the way spot in whitestone to try.

This is a great go to place for authentic Taiwanese flavor palette on Chinese food. It does not have your typical Chinese takeout food but their specialties such as their Taiwanese bento boxes are a must try! This place is my go to place when I don't know what to eat and have some time to wait. I'd give it 5 stars if it wasn't for the long waits I have experienced. The owners are hard workers and constantly doing their best to serve everyone. Because they are always busy, you can expect the phone line to be busy and quite a wait even when you arrive at the store to pick up your food. Another con is that the owners predominantly speak mandarin and not much English. Sometimes, there is a third person who is able to speak English but it is unpredictable of when that person is present. The wait may be long and you might get impatient but the food is worth waiting for. If you don't know what to order, I'd recommend anyone to try any of the Taiwanese bento boxes. All rice boxes come with a complimentary soup! You can choose between savory or sweet. The type of soup varies every time but you can guarantee that it is very homemade and comforting and worth trying! Everything from here is a huge portion and a great value for the price you're paying for. I also suggest to be prepared to pay with cash for their a 3% surcharge for using credit cards.

On the outside, Pearl Garden looks like any other Chinese takeout restaurant. But on their menu, you will find Taiwanese dishes that make this restaurant stand out from the crowd. I heard about this place from a Taiwanese foodie friend, and have eaten from here a few times already. I love the Eel, Chicken Leg and Pork Chop Over Rice bento box because it is such a massive meal. We've tried a couple other bento boxes in the past, and they are a step above the quality you might expect from a take out place. Definitely give this place a try the next time you don't feel like cooking at home :)

Another really good meal. Pass up on the Kung Pao...hard and dry for my taste. Stick with the Taiwanese Beef Noodle Soup for sure! How it is, that they make the beef so juicy and tender is beyond me...but a must try here! Will be back to try m

It's a small place, but packed with people ordering. I checked on the menu, everything looks so delicious. Had hard to go decide what I want. Then I saw on the menu , there is combo that has Pork chop, Chicken, Eel ( they called it 海陸空, From the sea, land and sky, I don't think Chicken can fly) Anyways, it's a great deal! Only $20 ( it was $18, I added the sausage ). Also, it came with homemade soup, you want sweet soup or normal soup, your choice. Highly recommend this place, fair price and great taste and I AM Soooooo FULL!

Came back here recently. Post-COVID. Same consistently good value fare. Got the railroad bentos again. Yum. Great if you are looking for quality takeout. Call ahead if you can - they don't have call waiting so you may have to call back if you get a busy signal. #HiddenGem

Hands down and by far the best Taiwanese bento box. You can't go wring with either pork or chicken leg over rice in all of Queens. If you don't trust me or then look at all the other reviews they gave five stars. I this little mom and pop takeout is something special. Been coming here for over 10 years snd still no other is comparable. Each take out Bento comes with a homemade soup of day as well. $11 per bento is a bargain.

My eyes lit up when I saw the menu. The owners are from Tainan, Taiwan which is often consider the culinary capital of Taiwan with many iconic traditional dishes and flavors. The restaurant is spacious but it does not have many table seatings (3-5 tables?). When we came it wasn't busy so we got a spot but we did see many people coming in for their takeout orders. The oldies they play at the restaurant take me back to my childhood. The place is structured very interestingly where it's an open kitchen so you can actually easily see how they prep the food in the back. We ordered: - oyster omelette pancake - mung wort kueh (4 pieces) - danzai noodle - mixed spice platter The oyster omelette was the highlight! The bottom is crispy and they use a generous amount of oysters. It's the most authentic oyster pancake I've had in the east coast. Alot of other "Taiwanese spots" don't make it correctly. I also love the mung wort kueh (hard to find places that sell this) - it's a fun snack to take to go. It's a savory mochi bun with shredded radish as the main ingredient. The danzai noodle is an iconic dish from Tainan. Its main star consists of the one shrimp and the marinated ground braised pork. Although I would prefer the dry version but they serve the soup version here. The broth tastes very clear and clean, doesn't feel like it's dosed with salt and MSG. We got the mixed platter - an iconic street food in Tainan is 滷味 (Lou Wei) which is consist of different ingredients tossed and braised in a soy-based spice sauce. They have a nice selection of Lou Wei options and the platter we got had pork belly, duck neck, tofu skin, and lotus roots. The spicy duck neck can be intimidating for those that have never had it but it is fun to eat. There are so many items on there that I can't wait to try. For first timer, definitely get the oyster pancake and Luroufan! I can't wait to come back and try more of the traditional Taiwanese dishes. They also have frozen dumplings that you can buy to go. 50 pieces for $28-$30 is a pretty good price!

The tofu's also small, just a few small cubes. The amount of noodles is about 1/2 cup, without soup. The flavor's very, very mild, it's not like the typical Taiwanese beef noodles with big flavor. The food was good -- the fried pork chop was a nice cut, served with sides of minced pork, half a tea egg, and a couple pieces of broccoli. The flavors worked well together, but the portion size was definitely on the smaller side. I'm not a heavy eater, yet I still didn't feel like I had a full meal. For the price -- about $16 after tax -- I was glad I didn't order any extra side dishes. Of course, we expect the school to choose only the highest quality restaurants to order delivery from, and yes, it was quite good, considering that it was delivery that was lugged all the way from Flushing and ultimately had to be reheated in the microwave. Come this past weekend, we decided to plan a whole day trip to Flushing to visit Flushing Meadows Corona Park and eat some good Taiwanese and Chinese food. We search Yelp and we come across this place, OK Ryan. The restaurant is small and cozy, but packed a big bite. We had Taiwanese Beef Noodle Soup, Pork Chop lunchbox, Oyster Pancake, Pork Intestine Vermicelli, Taiwanese Sausage, and Golden Red Bean Pancake. Everything authentic and delicious. Oyster Pancake was probably the best I've had for a very long time - it was filled with oysters, not too doughy, not too saucy. Beef noodle soup had excellent depth of flavor and the meat was tender and delicious. We ordered way too much food and took a bunch of it home. Found out that the restaurant was cash or Venmo only. So I take out my phone and Venmo the bill. But wait, my Venmo app did not register OK Ryan as a new restaurant. In fact, it said I had paid this restaurant several... times.... before. Cue the freak out. Who hacked my Venmo account to buy Taiwanese food?? OK, so obviously, OK Ryan and OK Canaan are one and the same. Good for delivery, but now we know, much better in person. We'll try the real OK Canaan next time.

Let's start with the noodle. It is al dente and carry the soup really well. The braised beef made well too. The tenderness is just fine. However, I missed the big piece of meat instead of bite size chopped cube. It is easy to eat but could be more satisfying. The Shanghainese Pok Choy is a must in order to complete this dish authentically. However, it's overly chopped. I missed the couple halved Shanghainese Pok Choy placed nicely on the side. For the soup, the fave is fine and the balance of the sour and savory is just to the point. However, I wish I could have more pickled veggie that added more sourness to the soup. Again, could not finish as they were beyond the grease factor. I wanted to order the vegetable dumplings, which were reliably good, but for some reason did not appear on their automated menu system. Finally, as a Caucasian customer I always enjoy having the racist staff bring me a plastic fork instead of chopsticks. It is the final insult to a mediocre experience.
