Went downtown last week with a friend to do some last minute Christmas shopping, and of course we had to stop by Pearlz! We walked in right after they opened and got seats at the bar and next to the oyster shucker. We started with a dozen house oysters and 2 oyster shooters. For our food, my friend got the BLT Seafood Tower, which contained shrimp, crab, lettuce, carrots, tomato, bacon, hard boiled egg and green goddess dressing. It was loaded with seafood and was very fresh and tasty. I ordered the New England Clam Chowder, and it was warm, comforting and delicious! Wow! I cannot believe this place had reservations available on the same day, it's was that good. It's a small place with a bar, some high top tables and bench/table seating. You are right next to your neighbors so it's close quarters along the wall. Both of us ordered daily specials- the mixed seafood grill and pan fried monkfish with greens and white bean cassoulet. Both entrees were delicious and the sauce on each plate was sooo good. I think I would've preferred a flakier fish over the monkfish but was still yummy. We also ordered the Brussel sprouts which were nice and crunchy but needed salt and would've preferred freshly ground Parmesan vs packaged shredded cheese. Also, we got the corn fritters which I couldn't stop eating despite being gluten intolerant. The maple butter was so creamy and swwwt which was a nice contrast to the slight kick of the batter. After walking around the French Quarter, we ended up at Pearlz for dinner. While we did have a bit of a wait for our drinks, our server was attentive and friendly. He apologized for the backlog at the bar and stayed on top of it. (Their lemon drop martini was worth the wait!) I got the shrimp dinner, and the hubs got the fish and chips. A close friend visited Charleston several years ago, and highly recommended that we visit Pearlz... so much so that she gave us a $50 gift certificate to spend here. So we had no choice but to go! We came by for Happy Hour and honestly should've just stayed here through dinner. (We had a reservation for 167 Sushi Bar afterwards which turned out to be just okay - could have skipped) At first we were told it was going to be a ~45 min wait, but we noticed a free table outside and asked if we could sit there. I would've preferred sitting inside since the sidewalk was on the smaller side and there were some pesky mosquitoes out there, but since we were on a time crunch we wanted whatever was available. We ordered a couple of cocktails, a dozen raw oysters and the corn fritters. Everything was delicious! This was the meal that solidified my love for raw oysters - I was a bit iffy before this trip to SC but I'm truly a fan now. They were so fresh (not fishy!) and I easily could've shared another dozen or two. Again, my only regret was not waiting for a nicer table indoors to enjoy myself and not having a full, proper meal here instead of just happy hour / rushing off to our next meal. There were just too many restaurants to try and we should've spent more time at this one. read more

The place was super cute and I love the outside seating. They have a good menu for seafood and oysters obviously. They are a bit pricey but their cocktails are adorable. Happy hour is not great, only house wine and liquor. My friend ordered a martini with house liquor and it was absolutely terrible. She couldnt drink it. The crab dip was amazing but the break that came was absolutely charred on one end. It was also not enough bread for the drip I began using the crackers they give. Overall it was expensive for the crab dip and one cocktail. It's a cute place but I'm running back any time soon. read more

My review is for happy hour only and I absolutely loved the happy hour at Pearlz! Happy hour is anywhere at the restaurant, which makes it super easy to get a seat! Service was very prompt and the waiter was really friendly. We ordered a beer (4$), charbroiled oysters, a dozen raw oysters, and corn fritters. My least favorite dish was the corn fritters, mainly because I wasn't expecting them to be sweet and I don't love sweet stuff. But if you do, this will be perfect for you! The texture of the fritters was great. Crispy and golden on the outside and pillowy on the inside. The raw oysters tasted fresh and were so easy to slurp down. Yum! The charbroiled oysters were the real star! I would have ordered this dish 5 times if I had room! The Parmesan cheese on top and the seasoned oyster were *chefs kiss*. Lucky for me, my boyfriend let me have his last charbroiled oyster!! Don't sleep on pearlz when you're in Charleston! I want to really like this place really I do! We came for dinner and I guess expected a different experience. Pearlz offers a ton of oysters options but that's about it from what we wanted on the menu. We started with half a dozen of small oysters from Rhode Island which were delicious. My wife had the tacos, meh and I had the seafood grill which was good just way too much lobster butter around the fish and rice. The drinks were a big miss too sugary and the service was rushed, nice server just a bit overwhelmed. I doubt we will be back but it was nice to try it once. read more

Really soft hush puppies come to mind when I think of these. Eh is what I'd describe them if you ask me if you should get them. The hubs' shrimp and grits were divine though! We thought the enchilada sauce was a weird thing, but apparently it did wonders for this dish. You get the nice enchilada flavors along with boat loads of cheese. There were either 5 or 6 large pieces of shrimp altogether. A def rec! The New England lobster roll was so so. I didn't get that wowing moment I expected. The bun (as they described it) was on the soggy/not fresh side/like it was sitting out under the hot sun all day. There was just something off to me about that roll's texture. The lobster itself, even though it looked like it was full of flavor, was anything but. The only thing this sandwich had going for it was the pretty decent portion of lobster for the price I'm paying ($20.95). For some reason all the beers on the menu were outdated so our waiter had to vocally tell us the actual beers available. Hope this gets updated for future customers! Pearlz was recommended to me as THE place to order oysters in Charleston and now I know why-- it's incredible. I was a bit skeptical at first, mostly because there really are SO many other places that offer oysters, how could this one be so different? Well, it is. It may have to do with the vinegar sauce they prep it with. It may have to do with the ambiance. It also could be that on sundays, they have "Sunday funday" specials where you can enjoy some affordable beers to pair with it. Either way, Pearlz is the spot for oysters! It is a bar/seating table restaurant which is also great for families. Our server, Naomi, was an absolute gem and very cordial and attentive. My son ordered the low country fish and chips which had 2 large pieces of fish and the batter wasn't too overpowering. I got the crab cake sandwich which came with chips and some broccoli slaw. For $18, the sandwich hit the spot and you can tell the crab cake was meaty and fresh. My wife got the seafood assortment over a bed of rice. For starter, we got the house oyster dozen for $20. It was a healthy portion size that made him happy. I had trio sampler, but subbed 4 raw oysters for the clams and a side of grits that was an early seven years. Oysters are my 'happy place' food. The whole experience was fun and chill. The vibe definitely was a lot more relaxed than expected. For the record, if you cannot get into this Pearlz, there is a second location in West Ashley that has a parking lot and bigger space by what I hear. It isn't far from downtown either.
