We've been meaning to try this place for a while and finally got around to it. Everything we had was insanely- insanely - delicious. The salted egg fried chicken was as close to perfect as it gets. Both the butter bean salad and the tomato braised collards were fantastic. And don't forget the mushroom po boy- a gigantic lip-smacking delight. Was the meal 2000+ calories? Without a doubt. I'm a vegetarian and they have great vegetarian options. The mushroom po'boy is amazing. The sides change and all of the ones I've had never disappointed. I've followed and ate at this restaurant since it was delivery only, in queens, pop-ups and now their permanent restaurant. The staff are always lovely, attentive and efficient. The naked chicken seemed slightly burnt, and despite looking like large pieces, the actual chicken underneath the skin was small. The chicken itself wasn't that tasty. The dirty rice just tasted bad to me, although my friend liked it fine but complained that she expected more chicken livers in it. The cornbread was just okay. And, such high prices for small portions. The bigger problem is the layout of the restaurant. You need to order to sit down with your number, but the cashier is right next to the door. No space is allocated for the line, but then maybe these popup/hipster spots like to line up outside. The service was decidedly apathetic and lethargic. I love love love southern fried chicken and all the traditional sides. So, I'm biased. I had to mentally prepare myself for something different. We ordered the spicy and the salted egg. Also ordered the collard greens. Poutine. Cornbread. Beans. Pudding. In hindsight, it's a love it or don't (but not hate) kind of fusion experience. I personally didn't love any of it despite my trying to mitigate my own expectations. The chicken was juicy. The spicy crust was plenty oily and spicy. But the combo wasn't for me. The salted egg was interesting in that it was like a creamy crust. I guess what I love about fried chicken is the chicken skin and the batter ruined it for me. Not the fault of Peking House. I just really wanted Popeyes. Oh well. The sides were ok. I liked the cornbread and poutine the most - probably because they were most similar to just good old cornbread and poutine. Definitely worth a try and the meal will end up being a conversation piece for sure. If I come again with friends, I'd order the plain chicken. read more

More 3.5 stars. I really wanted to like Pecking House, and may yet like them but not for the reasons they expected. I got the signature chili fried chicken and, to start with the good, the chicken itself was very well done. Juicy, yet hot to the core, and the skin very crispy if not close to shatteringly crispy. Both the darks and the whites were equally well done which is not easy to execute given white meat's relative leanness. The meat pulled apart easily and was tender but not mushy inside. That seasoning and sauce, though. Funnily enough, as an Asian-American person who loves Sichuanese food, the seasoning and sauce were the absolute worst. It was way, way too sweet, to the point where the whole thing tasted like a Dorito chip if not a churro. Very disappointing given that the underlying chicken, which might as well be a corn chip at that point, was executed so well. I don't think most people eat fried chicken to feel like they're eating a bag of chips, but the flavor was pretty on point to a bag of chips or some country-fair concession. Bemusing because it clearly took the establishment so much more effort to produce fried chicken. To add to the offense, each piece of chicken was tactilely very gritty. When I rubbed and looked more closely I could see all the fine granules of white sugar between my fingers. If there were that much salt I would be able to taste it but, no, it was very clearly sugar. Sichuanese-style chili sauce is savory and balanced. This was sweet and sweet. That said, the sides with the exception of the charred turnips with miso and almond were on point. The butterbean salad was reminiscent of Taiwanese side dishes and very well balanced between earthiness, acidity, a little bit of sugar, and herbaciousness. The cornbread was plain awesome and very wholesome with full large grains of corn mixed in. The charred turnips were fine but slightly unctuous; there should've been more acid to balance out the earthiness and nuttiness and, without it, it tasted like an earthy/nutty poutine. I'd come back for the naked fried chicken, though. That may be the thing to get here. read more

With all the good reviews and an interesting menu, I thought this was worth a try. My first attempt was the Ma Po Tofu sloppy Joe, just because it sounded so good. I was disappointed - without the Szechuan pepper or soft tofu, it really lacked flavor and texture. Hard tofu might make structural sense, but along with a slice of avocado, it really did not work. So since the chicken is top of their list, I did not give up and tried the fried chicken, one with hot chili and the other with salted egg. The chicken was way over-cooked, over-salted and unsatisfying. Yes it had a nice crust and a good crunch, but the salted egg sauce was too skimpy to make any impact, and while the chili was spicy, it didn't have much else going for it with everything so over-cooked. The breast meat was still dry and stringy. The bean salad on the side was the best thing, and the mac and cheese cornbread was mostly just cornbread. At this price, I would go across the street for Sweet Chicks. read more
